I’m practicing restraint, and I’m going to unleash holiday cheer in a slow monitored stream. Baby Steps. But only for the next two weeks, and then I’m not promising anything. I won’t tell you that I stood in front of a six-foot Santa at Costco today and pictured what he’d look like strapped to my roof. Oh wait, I just did. Starbucks unleashed their red cups, so I think it’s only fair that I set free one holiday photo from the shackles of my bursting heart.
Psst. I found my kids’ special ornaments for this year, and I love them. They make me want to do a holiday jig. Or at least a festive herkie like that little ornament there on the left.
I am in good company though. Brett took Lainey to Lowe’s last night to pick up a sprinkler part–a 20-minute job–and finally called me an hour later. “Oh my God, you’ve got to see this place. It’s like Christmas blew up in here. You’re going to love it.” He went on to describe the trees and the inflatable snowmen and the lights that blinked to the tune of “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” and all I could think was, “My God, what seven years of marriage will do to you.” He’s been Christmastized, and I love it. He even hinted around, waiting for my approval, that he really, really wanted to buy a new piece for our snow village.
“You know,” I said, “if you would have given me a snow village piece instead of an engagement ring, I totally would have said yes and you could have saved some money.”
Moving on.
I won a bet the other day, so I got to pick what we did for the evening. No brainer: beach sunset. Happy little things naturally unroll.
The family on the blanket next to us brought a boom box and played Frank Sinatra. I should have told them how happy it made me. I forgot.
Dash ate sand. Like handfuls of it.
*****
And other little things enjoyed this week:
Post sunset ice cream shop.
*****
Their magnetic connection through crib bars when he wakes up from a nap.
*****
Blue Q socks. (Blue Q is returning as a sponsor this holiday season, and they’ve stocked their shop with new socks like these. I love them. And listen. The stressful experience of the annual family Christmas photo would not have gone near as smoothly this year had I not used Blue Q’s Control Your Family Breath Spray. Lifesaver, I tell ya.) They’re so pretty, I don’t want to put shoes on. Stuff the stockings with stockings this year. They have socks with fun naughty sayings too.
*****
After ballet pretzels.
She likes her snacks in little bags, and she’s very possessive of the snack bag. Pirate’s booty ranks higher than pretzels, pretzels rank higher than popcorn. But the most prized snack bag award goes to the almighty Saltine.
*****
Baby Son.
Yep. Eight months in, and I cannot not smile when I say “baby son.” With his Chicklet teeth. First holidays are the best, and–why yes, we have some rad plaid and bow ties set aside for the coming weeks.
*****
Water trumps all baby toys.
And a little video of a dog and her girl (pardon my shaky filming hands).

Midweek hugs to this special little online community.
Find some happy around you. Enjoy it. Pass it on.

The Video! I die.
I love your posts always but the video today….best ever!!
Love the mid-week burst of happiness that your posts bring! We do the ornament thing too – each of us left home with a box full of treasured ornaments when we moved into our own homes. My kids already know which ornaments are THEIRS and why each one is put on our tree.
That has got to be the most agreeable dog I’ve ever seen!!! Big puffy heart!
And please let your Christmas freak flag fly- I say game on!
I loved your video.
I love how the puppy just plays along with Nella. What great memories they are making together!
The comment about brett and not needing a engagement ring made me chuckle. Where did you get that cozy coupe ornament?!?! My son is 2.5 and is so obsessed over his, too. I got a caramel brulee latte and also love the red cups. Hark and happy beggining of holiday season!!!! 🙂
O.M.G. That video. I die.
Okay the picture of Dash touching the water..ahhhh! And the video of Nella! Good for you for capturing moments that are so fleeting!😍
So sweet!! Love that little video!
Latte is the best dog in the world!! Those videos always bring me to tears. Thanks for sharing your joys, Kelle! Big hugs back at you. 🙂
I LOVEEEEEEEEE this post. ok… and especially the video. it makes me excited (and full of hope!) for my future. we have a 7 pound little puppy who is great with kids. i can’t wait to have a baby for the puppy to bond with. this is precious. 🙂 loved it. happy wednesday to all.
I need that cozy coupe ornament! Adorable!
That video…oh my gosh they have the sweetest relationship ever! Can you tell me (or does anybody else know) what kind of dog that is? I’ve never seen a dog do sweet and calm before…lovvvve <3!
WOW! love this post. the pic of nella and dash through the crib bars…priceless! and the video…love it! latte definitely wins the most-patient-dog-EVER award!!
Okay that video makes me so happy!! So, so sweet and dear. However, I have to say your dog’s ears look fake!! How can ears ever look that darn cute on an animal??? He/she could be a stuffed robot masquerading as a real dog. :o) Seriously cute video. Absolutely felt the love (and patience) between the two. PRECIOUS.
I wanted to tell you that the first runner with DS finished the NYC marathon on Sunday. As a marathon runner, who has run NY, I can tell you that I cried for sheer happiness for this man and his running partner. It had nothing to do with the fact that he had DS. I cried because he is a runner who had a dream to finish a marathon and did it. I hope you heard about him. Remarkable. Thank you, too, for helping this 50-year old momma of three teenage girls learn to see the remarkable in everyone!
All the pictures were great, as usual, but I absolutely LOVED the video! What kind of dog is Latte? Those ears!! I’ve been on the lookout for a new dog after I had to have my Gracie “put to sleep,” but I’m struggling with the breed of dog I want.
LOVED that video! Thanks for sharing it and brightening my rainy evening! Simply adorable…
After a long and somewhat frustrating day in my Kindergarten Inclusion classroom your post and especially the video reminded me why I really do love what I do and get up every day to keep doing it. You most definitely spread some happy my way today and the video was icing on the cake!
Thanks for this pick-me-up! Really needed this mid-week hug!
Loved the video. A smile maker on a cold, snowy Minnesota night.
Precious video. Sweet dog and his sweet girl.
And I love the water pictures!
A treat to visit.
I never realized Latte’s ears were like that! Absolutely hilarious.
Dash’s picture of him trying to touch the water!! Reminds me when my 5 yr old son was that small!! ohhh beautiful moments.
So beautiful! I’m not a dog person, but I totally could be with that cute little dog. he’s like a toy! And he’s so patient and Nella looks like she has a little buddy with her. Beautiful photos as always. I also loved the one of Dash pulling your hair, mysterious!
Keep up the beautiful blog posts. I get super excited when you post :)!
That is seriously one of the cutest little vidoes ever!
I love your holiday cheer so don’t hold back or apologize. Wondering if you would be willing to put together your favorite gifts for kids? I remember last year you talking about less is more and buying a few high quality gifts. We try to do the same thing and I love your ideas. And I’m sure I”m not the only one wondering where you find such great ornaments.
This post made me smile from beginning to end. LOVED the video, especially when she kissed the dog! Too sweet.
OMGosh, seriously, that video, stole my heart from the beginning to the end and I had to play it again. So incredibly cute that girl and her dog. LOVED it!
I cannot believe how much Nella has grown. She is so adorable, all of your kids are. Thanks for sharing.
Love those ornaments! Especially Dash’s… because that will make him laugh as he grows up. 🙂
What kind of puppy is Latte?
1. What a sweet video!
2. I LOVE that photo of you and Dash at the beach. Again, LOVE.
3. He is in his cutest stage yet, by far. Every time I see him I just want to jump through the screen for a cuddle. What a sweetie. <3
Latte’s ears, Nella prancing around like a little fairy elf, Lainey’s sweetness and shyness, Dash and his eyes of wonder and beautiful face…all special and precious…thanks for sharing them with us!
That’s got to be the cutest video I’ve ever seen. Made me so happy
Such a cute video!! I love the beach pictures–I’m a sucker for sunsets over the ocean 🙂
Can you be our videographer;)? Cool ornaments. Love how you’re on it. So festive. So sentimental:-)
Ah… you inspire me to breath and enjoy my kids more.
Granted, I just posted the following on Facebook: “Shouldn’t God just bless us with an amazingly well-behaved child on their birthday so we remember how excited we were the day they were born”
(my big girl turned five today and was VERY sassy while doing so)
Love your blog, Kelle. Love it when it is happy, festive, sad, pondering and deep-in-thought.
Thanks. From this community.
That video is the most precious thing ever. Latte chilling on the bed while Nella reads is killing me. So cute.
Ah that video was just beyond adorable!!
So I picked up our first peppermint mochas in the festive red cups last for my husband and I. I also strung up yet another strand of twinkly lights today. The holiday season is upon us and I could not be any more thrilled about it!!! Share on sister!!!
When you write about your baby son I totally get it and am so looking forward to having my baby boy in my arms in February! We have two girls (5 and 2 today) and seeing and reading about sweet little Dash just make me even more excited for what the future with our boy holds!!!
Now go buy that 6 foot tall Santa for your roof!
Aww, I love Latte so much! What a good doggie!

I’ve loved reading your blog and especially your book! I was actually I student who was trying to do a piece from Bloom for a prose piece in a UIL Academic competition and my director email you about some verification issues. Thanks so much for sharing your story. I’ve loved “watching your Nella grow” through your posts. If you wouldn’t mind, please check out my story of my friend who’s also rocking an extra chromosome! Thanks!

I have had such a cruddy week. Reading this post and watching this video made it all the yuck just slide away. Thank you for reminding me of what is important.
p.s. LOVE that song!!
Kelle Hampton! You capture love in all your words and music and videos and pictures so beautifully. So perfectly, humanly beautiful, in way that we all adore you, but relate to you, as if, you were our best friend. Thank you for sharing. This particular video, captures, super amazing love with Nella and Latte, and can’t we all just do that, so easily everyday? I am going to try! Keep on!
The Cozy Coupe ornament!!!!! Spill, girl 🙂
That video was so cute! Love it. I’m so jealous that you can still do beach things…here in WI, done for quite a while. 40’s today. I do like Fall, but this came too harsh and fast for my taste! Remember when you had a “playlist” at the bottom of your blog? Do you still have that, a current one? I found the best music on that thing! I’m totally out of the music scene so anything there was new to me! Thanks!
That little video is so cute. Nothing like a young kid and a little dog…precious. Thank you for sharing.
A chilly fall hug from Tejas tonight,
Melissa
PS – The moon is just a slice tonight, but oh so pretty.
Kelle,
I am sure that you have seen this already but if not it is the most amazing video that everyone needs to watch to enjoy and even shed a few tears as I did. I just had to share and I hope you enjoy it. http://www.godvine.com/You-Need-to-Hear-What-a-Little-Girl-Says-About-Her-Brother-With-Down-Syndrome-4188.html
Kelle, the snack bag thing must be a three-year-old thing. Mine does it too. Our fave is goldfish. Love the video. And the fact that I am not the only Mama who has her yearly ornaments picked out early. Love those memories.

Thank you,
Bec, from Australia.
Wow – your dog is SO good with her! I’m sure mine would have jumped out of the stroller/car in a matter of seconds! But Latte? Nope. Patience of a queen I tell ya.
Beautiful pictures, as always! Love the sink pictures!
Oh, every year I look forward to your holiday cheer! Bring it on! This girl even listened to Christmas music while reading your post- it just goes together so well. Like milk and cookies. 🙂
I love the word “christmastized”! I love making up words too… and yes,,, Brett is so there!
Kelle, Please tell me where you found that car ornament, I’m not going to be on the hunt for my own little man! What a treasure!

That video made my night!!!!!
Oh My Gosh.
That video.
That DOG!
She is one of the cutest puppies I have ever laid eyes on in my entire life.
I will fall asleep with a smile on my face tonight. THANK YOU! 🙂
The video of Nella and her dog is priceless! 🙂
Kelle….
My Dad is adamantly opposed to Christmas before Thanksgiving. He is such a Grinch. {Smirk, smirk!!} This, of course, only encourages us. We listen to Christmas music around here earlier and earlier every year!! But, hey!! Hallmark Channel has already been playing Christmas-themed films!! This reminds me. It is 9AM my time, on November eighth, and I am going to play me some Christmas music!! Oh. If you are a Bruce Springsteen fanatic. I highly recommend any YouTube version of “Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town”!! Yeah. I turned my Down syndrome brother into a fanatic!! He sings it word-for-word, and even does an amazing Clarence Clemons impersonation!! ;-D
I love, love, love your childrens’ ornaments!! 😉
–Raelyn
Friday happiness complete.
I couldn’t comment on your most recent post, but Gripe water was the best thing for our child that had colic. 🙂
O please, how do I share that video on Facebook….it is beyond PRECIOUS!
Been reading since the beginning here in Ct. Could not not comment on that video. I think that is the cutest thing that I have seen on my computer in quite some time. 2 sweeties…Nella and Latte. And the ears on that pup just sent me over the edge. Hugs to both!
Oh, how I’ve missed coming here….to JUST here.
Loved every itty bitty bit of this!
Babies in bathtubs…need I say more?
Oh my, this video. It will be my go-to piece when I’m feeling blue.
That video is so cute I can’t find enough superlatives !!
I too need to know where you found their ornaments! I have THE hardest time finding just the right one!
The sweet little kiss that Nella plants on Latte has painted a lasting picture in my heart. Very sweet….
Kelle, I love your blog! I started reading a few months ago but wanted to start at the beginning of the road. I have laughed and cried with you and your family! I adore your pictures and astounding words! I too have a little (will be 9 yrs old December 10th) boy who has Down Syndrome. We live not too far from you in Miami. It would be one of my wishes or an item on my Bucket List to be able to meet you and your wonderful family one day, as I think Nella and Peter would wind up being best of friends! Did I mention he also loves little girls, babies and dogs!
I love love love the video of Nella in “a Girl with her Dog”! Peter loves to see all the pictures when I am reading your blog! You are such an inspiration! Thank you for sharing your lives with us all!
