My Baby’s Got GILLS!

April 1, 2008 By Kelle

So, my little fish had her first swim lesson today…and she LOVED IT!!! It’s our goal to have her swimming by 18 months, and yes it’s possible. Brett taught both of the boys to swim before 2, and my pediatrician had her three kids all swimming at 18 months. We’ve been practicing getting wet in the bath/shower to desensitize any fears of water, but today was the big one. We went completely under THREE times! I’ve been told the best thing you can do is get them under and praise them, praise them, praise them. So that’s what we did. I told her “Ready?! We’re gunna’ go under!!!” and then I blew on her face and slowly put her all the way under, right back up and then watched her little eyes look to me for a reaction. I cheered, clapped, and wow-whee’ed like crazy!…and her I-think-I-might-cry face turned right into a big smile!!! We splashed, kicked, played motor boat and then tried the going under thing two more times. She NEVER cried! I figured three’s good for starters. I’m so proud of my little NEMO!! She did this ON HER OWN….dunked her head right in, and then popped up with a dripping face and a big smile!
This is a post-dunk shot…hence the wet hair.

I love you, little Water Baby!

smiling at weekee wachee. good memories.

I like her expression in the last one…kinda cocky – like, “yeah. I’m a swimmer. you know it. I can swim.”

I spy 6 teeth, she grew 2 new ones on the bottom. Nothing cuter than baby teefs or cherries on baby girl’s clothes.

I thinking learning to swim young is so important. Especially when you live in Florida! I wanted to get bug in lessons right now but the youngest our local place will teach is four months so it is coming up soon.

    Lainey is a doll.
