Right now.

August 9, 2010 By Kelle

Last night, at the closing of a busy-but-good weekend full of celebrations and sun-soaking and a long Sunday chasing crabs and watching high tide gradually pull back on our pretty little Isle, I soaked the littlest in a tub of warm suds.

Photobucket

A relaxing appropriate end to the weekend. We rinsed off tiny grains of sand that snuck home with us, lathered buttermilk wash onto the feathery tuft on top of her head and watched as she continued to flip onto her tummy despite the many times I repositioned her on her back. Girl wants to go, go, go…swimming, splashing and slipping her way around the tub.

Photobucket

Photobucket

And after all that slipping and flipping, we slid her into soft jammies and she was soon fast asleep next to her sister whose tired tanned body was already breathing slow and peaceful in the big bed. My tired little girls. With perfect reason to be tired. It was a long, beautiful weekend.

With many celebrations. Beginning with our friend Ellie’s birthday…whose bright and sunshiney personality was met with sunny skies for her fabulous pool bash. Lainey loved tie-dying her own shirt and hanging with the big girls.

Photobucket

Photobucket

We party hopped (with a short stop home to change) from Ellie’s to the beach where we celebrated Cash & Rocco’s baptism. These boys grew in their mama in synch with my girl…and for that they will always be special. Many a times, their mama and I stood belly to belly so that our littles could hear each other’s hearts beating and baby love seeped from belly to belly. So much love. So it was…a bunch of grateful hearts stood barefoot next to the gulf this weekend hugging babies and thanking all things holy for the gift of life.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

And for celebrating life? We go all out, baby. We dress all up. Because we don’t take celebrating life lightly.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Apparently, neither does God. He saved the good sky for us that night.

Photobucket

And we drank it in, running along the shore, dippin’ in the pool, making up for all those times we told ourselves we’re gonna hit the beach more often. It was good…very good.

Photobucket

Photobucket

And finally, the grand finale came yesterday when we ran, like a long lost friend, to the Isles of Capri. Oh, Friend, how we’ve missed you.

Photobucket

Photobucket

For all the times we’ve been here…for all the times we’ve pulled up and unpacked pails and shovels, beach blankets and bathing suits…set up camp in front of the tiki bar and watched as the tides change…it’s different every time. The skies are different, the creatures and life that emerge from their shelters on the beach for some photos…there’s always something new.

Photobucket

Photobucket

But it’s always, always beautiful.

Yesterday, Brett’s mama joined us along with his sister and her kids visiting from Chicago which, of course, made it far more fun for the boys. They were out of sight most of the day, kayaking, exploring, crab-hunting…

Photobucket

And although in a perfect world, our family would all live on the same street where cousins and brothers and sisters would run from one house to the next, we welcome them when they come and watch with grateful hearts as love abounds.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Yesterday, the bright skies melted from their usual squint-eyed brilliance to a calmer pastel and, while not gray or gloomy, their mild stillness provided the perfect balance for beach bliss.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

And the mild conditions called the crabs out of their sandy burrows by the hundreds.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

I love to watch the daddy’s face when he’s here. Because it’s always happy. He talks about this place like a fifth child.

Photobucket

I kinda like it too.

And finally…near sunset, the gray clouds came with cool rains that chased us inside the tiki hut where we huddled and danced to Rod’s guitar across the wood plank floors that house all our memories.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

And now, as I sit here looking back at all these pictures and remembering the way the skies looked, the way my girl smiled as she clapped and danced at our favorite place, the way the sand and sun tamed the little one into a sleepy trance…

Photobucket

…the way we laughed and drenched ourselves in friends and littles and life’s celebrations…I am indeed certain that there is something to be said about the power of reflection. About taking a moment to think back whether through words or pictures or closing your eyes and smiling on the plane on the way home from a fabulous getaway. But there is something about the beauty of the past, whether it was yesterday or many yesterdays ago, that fuels us to drink more out of the future. And that’s why I do this. Make note of it…what you love right now…because what you love tomorrow will be even better because of it.

Loving right now.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

…and looking forward to a million more right nows.

Long time reader – first time commenter … I have always LOVED your descriptions of the Isle of Capri and your favorite little spot there … and never realized that my family and I visited that same exact spot last Summer! When I saw your picture in this post of the front of the Fish House I all of a sudden recognized it … we had a FABULOUS dinner there, it’s where my son had his first seafood dinner! It was an absolutely beautiful evening, filled with family, wonderful food, and great local music. I’m so glad I finally made the connection to where it is! Thank you for sharing, and keep up the great work, I love your blog ๐Ÿ™‚

I started reading this blog in January after Nella was born and i can’t believe how much Lainey has grown up in that time, like you said in your previous post she looks like a real little girl now.

I love reading your Isle of Capri posts, when I’m ‘all grown up’ and settled with a family and children of my own (4 of them; two boys and two girls, i totally have this all planned out) I’m going to find my own Isle of Capri where I can gather with friends and make incredible memories.

Tomorrow I go back to teaching after a summer off with my new little guy, but today we took some time to enjoy our beach here in Charleston, SC. Can’t even begin to choose a favorite part of this post. ALL of it just makes me feel so warm and fuzzy (not kidding at all)… It also makes me want to leave this desk and run, not walk, straight home to my little boy. Though there are no beaches here in Colorado, we do have a mighty fine sandbox with fine, white sand… perfect for diggin’ in those toes. Might not be Florida, but it will be our little bit of heaven this evening.

The photos of Lainey dancing were my favorite! Watching littles dance has got to be one of the best feelings in the world.

I remember watching my first little niece Emma dance around the living room for the first time. Jamie would sing to her shake your bootie, show em’ how you shake your bootie and she would shake that thing that her mama gave her so hard with the biggest smile one her little one year old face. It was priceless!

Love that last one of Nella, too. It reminds me of our little CoCo and how one baby is just never enough!!

Your writing enchants me and takes me to the world you write about. I felt like I was on the beach having fun with friends, with the peaceful feeling of just being surrounded by loved ones. That’s amazing.

Nella and lainey are so big. My cousin keeps amazing me at how big she’s grown, considering I was alive when she was born it’s so weird to see her turn 6- with all this perosnality and her own opinions. Seeing lainey posing and laughing and dancing…it shows how much she’s turning into her own little person. Nella will have the same creative kind personality. You can always see that in the eyes, and nella has the most gorgeous eyes.

I’m going to be celebrating life this week, too! My best friend is turning 18 and I’ve been along her the whole way hoping to make her day perfect for her. Celebrating someone is so amazing- letting them KNOW we’re glad they’re here with us is even better.

    Have a great week!

It seems loving the right now is an attitude as much as it is whatever is happening in life for those who embrace it…although you sure are creating some lovable moments with your precious family and friends in beautiful settings. Thank you so much for sharing!!

We were away on a beach getaway this weekend to Chincoteague, Va, and went to a local carnival where I saw a precious little girl about my daughter’s age (4ish) with almond eyes, and she was loving life and so beautiful as some teenagers were so darn proud to be taking her on rides and she was chatting them up. I don’t think I would ever even noticed that special little soul if it weren’t for your blog and her followers. She was beautiful and happy and loved and about to get on a carousel…I thought of you and yours in that happy little encounter.

Holy baby dolls! You’ve got a ton in your house as I do mine! My 2 yr old has to sleep with them ALL in her toddler bed. And she knows if one is missing. There is no lights out unless they are all there.

I totally l.o.v.e. that pic of Nella with the dolls. And I totally laughed out loud!!

I swear, your kids are some of the most beautiful kids I have ever seen, girl!!

Ah, I am smiling a big curled up expression. And I’m not crying…thank goodness…your writing makes me well in emotion thinking about my own family. And it is those memories that fuel us. My favorite nieces are in town (12 & 14) for another stint of Annapolis summer fun; and even though they are almost as big as me, I still remember their moments as babies and little girls. And my love for them made me want to have yet my own little girl. And I was blessed enough to have my own girl (thanks God!). And we will create another year of memories that carve grooves in my mind and my heart. I cannot wait.

    Have a wonderful week.

Nella is such a Florida girl–you get her near water and her arms and legs start churning. And Lainey’s incessant chatter is my favorite music right now…to hear her get excited and say “Poppa..Poppa…Poppa…” while she it lining up her message is like a prelude to a symphony. Home now, and your post made my morning! Love u all…Happy Birthday Austyn!

I have to tell you a funny story. More actually, a funny dream. I was at a club with 3 or 4 other people in the club at one time, 2 of them being members of the Backstreet Boys (Nick and AJ). We were all hanging out, chatting, and your 2 girls came in and I was playing with Nella and Lainey and the BSB boys were hanging out with us too. The, Joey Tribiani (yup, from Friends) came in in a huff and told us that he’s babysitting the girls and they took off to find me.

I’m 8 months pregnant – that is my excuse for this crazy dream!! ๐Ÿ™‚

There is a cute little store in my town, and every time Im there I honestly think of you–and they have that outfit there. When I first saw it, I instantly thought of how this was an outfit that I would see on one of your girls in pictures. And I also thought that Im a little jealous to not have a baby girl to put in it ๐Ÿ™‚ But anyway, how interesting that I dont even know you, but I feel like I do. Another beautiful post Kelle! I love all the pictures as always! That one of Nella with the babies is too adorable.

Funny, I just posted about a fabulous weekend on my blog too (and it involves a doll as well!;)

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and hopefully the next trip we make to Florida will include a visit to the Isle of Capri!

Again many thanks for bringing me back to what is most important which is our sweet Babies!!! My Husband and I struggled for 4 years through Infertility. My 1st was conceived via IVF & my 2nd was a total surprise!! We had just completed all our routine tests to begin our 2nd IVF to try to conceive again when I realized I was late and what do you know I got the best surprise ever!!! At times I let my crazy work life and home chores get in the way of just getting down to the floor and playing with my Boys but ever since I found your blog I make sure to put work & home chores second to my Beautiful Miracles. So THANK YOU!!!

    Hi Kelle,

I love, love love your blog! Your precious babies are beautiful as are you and your photographs bring tears to my eyes. Thank you for bringing insight and perspective to parenting and the view and feelings of daily life as a mom, it makes my day.

I am a special educator and appreciate the story of your amazing Nella. She is one lucky girl to have a great mom and dad and big sister as you all. Each day is an adventure, always enjoy the journey. I’m still enjoying my journey… I have an amazing 11 yr. old son and twin daughters who are 8.

Thank you for making my day each time I read your blog.

Kelle – it’s official, the next time we go to Ft. Meyers Beach, I am headed down to the Isle of Capri! We were in Ft. Meyers in May but didn’t get to go to the Isle. The way you talk about it and the pictures just make me want to experience it FOR REAL!

Love the last picture of Nella with all the babies . . .babies in too big diapers! Funny, my little has put all of her baby dolls in diapers too! ๐Ÿ™‚
