In the sun, I move quickly. Energized by its warmth and promise of outdoor activities, I sense the needle of my capability monitor creeping upward, and I often misjudge where it stops, convincing myself that an extra dose of Vitamin D means Do More. On a hot day we change our clothes once, twice, maybe three times, trading t-shirts for tank tops, tank tops for bathing suits, bathing suits for t-shirts. My mind reels erratically–as it has instinctively done since I was young–thinking of all the things we can do. We can run in the sprinkler. We can walk to the lake. We can trace our bodies with sidewalk chalk. And maybe we can do them all at the same time, like one of those one-man bands, blowing a harmonica, beating his drum and banging his cymbals all at once. I like that the sun is a good friend where we live–that it motivates and empowers me.
But–yes, but–the see-saw must shift its balance from time to time and, for this reason, I crave the calm that a good snow day brings. I miss the way my mind and body settled when, waking up to the swirl and whirl of a good blizzard, I knew there was nothing I could do but relax. Lainey loves to play storm. “Let’s pretend a storm is coming,” she says, and we run under the coffee table, covering ourselves with blankets, mimicking the sound of whistling wind and crowding our bodies closer. Her eyes get big and I, in turn, pretend to get excited. And there’s something…I don’t know…cozy about it all.
I say this not to complain about our bare feet and hatless heads in February, but to preface the good welcome of yesterday’s rain. An entire day of gray skies, slick reflective pavement and the calming hum of steady rain, whispering Do Less.
We did less. And it was good.
Rain accumulation on our screen.
A quick escape for first year well visit and thankful to have just that…a well baby.
Busy bee tries to swipe everything from Dr. Foley.
She does “So Big” about a 100 times a day, her “baby shows off” weapon of choice for new friends.
…perhaps my favorite picture of her ever:
And returning home for more rain…
…and our only Do Less disclaimer was that we baked. A tiny kid-sized cherry pie. We left the dirty dishes though…to abide by the whole Do Less rules, of course.
My mom always used the leftover pie crust to roll out, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and bake 15 minutes for cinnamon crust…divinity with a cold glass of milk, I must say.
And, in keeping with the coziness of a good rain post, our new sponsor, Blanket My Baby, has an incredible collection of baby blankets and bedding to choose from. Lainey has always had her favorite puppy blanket, and I’ve been looking for a small one to become Nella’s favorite. We may have it here with her new Lovey Blanket. (look under handmade blankets for super cute prints for boys too!) Use Coupon Code “ENJOY10” for 10% off your entire order.
It’s raining again this morning, and there’s an old movie with thick British accents calling my name. A Do Less weekend.
Happy Weekend!

I love “do less” weekends! Instead of all your rain, we had a ton of snow! So we all cuddled up, stayed in our p.j.’s all day and made a big pot of soup! Movies on the screen were playing while we slept, played games and watched!

kelle- my favorite part of pie has ALWAYS been that left over crust, too. my mom makes it the same way w/ cinnamon & sugar and yes, even at 36, she still bakes them for me when she has left-overs : ) My mom was one of 15 kids and she says that my grandma made those for the kids when they had no fruit/filling fior a real pie and they loved it just the same.
hooray for a healthy baby!

Oh “Do Less” weekends are fantastic! Sadly it has been so cold here lately we have had many “do less” days. I cannot wait for Spring! I LOVE the blanket!
JGeary says
4:11am – what are you doing up!?!? Well, I was up too, with a crazy one year old who wanted to chat and smooch, etc. I have not done cinnamon crust but have you tried a ‘pig tail’ where you mash together and roll out the left over crust and then coat it with butter, cinnamon and sugar and roll it across into a long roll and then curl it up into the shape of a pigtail. D-licious! I have been looking to upgrade to a 50d or 60d – hopefully soon. My G11 is not cutting it anymore after seeing your stunning pictures. Enjoy your ‘do less’ weekend with a SOOOO-O big here from my little ones to yours!
Kelley says
I adore days like that, especially after a busy week! Sometimes I plan a lot and leave one day on the end of that string that has nothing…and that becomes PJ day. We love it and we don’t waste it!!!
Rik says
Rain renews…nature and our nature. It calls us to the interior…resting, reflecting, remembering to enjoy an old movie, to hear the hum of the refrigerator, to be forced to find fun in the shadows. It looks like you did! And crust bits were always my favorite. Our nella is getting “so big.”. But she still melts in my arms and I hope she always will! She “shined” our lives! She brings a rainbow from the rain.
Kimberly {YeP, they are all mine} says
I love the rain when I can stay home to watch it through the window – one of my favorite kind of days 😉

Beautiful. That is exactly how the blizzards and rainy days make me feel too… cozy down and enjoy HOME. LOVE your photography of the rain, and particularly the one with all the ripples… perfect. And YAY! for Nella’s “well child” report! Whoohoo! She’s a beauty! Enjoy your rainy, Do Less weekend! Sounds like bliss to me!

I had enough with my do less couple of months with blizzards, bitter cold, winter storms. I am craving the erratic warm sunny days!
Your blog is being my sunshine lately. 😉

So adorable. You have to love those do less weekends. We will also be indulging, but it is a little forced because we were all sick. Oh well you take what you can!
Jenny says
Nella is sunshine, even if you don’t have it outside. What a doll she is, and “so big” too!
Our do nothing weekend involves leaving the dishes and laundry for another day. We’ll be outside all day today with friends and family in the snow going down the sled run (ala “luge) my husband builds each winter in our steep backyard. It’s cold, but balanced with trips inside for hot chocolate and soup it’s PERFECT!.
Have a great weekend!

I love all of those photos, but especially the rain ones. With all the stigma rain usually carries with it in people’s minds, it’s refreshing to be reminded of the beauty and calm that rain brings with it. We do the same with our left over pie crust! It’s my littles favorite. Your fav picture of Nella, too cute she looks so much Lainey in that one. Yes, Do Less-good call.
Mrs. Mazzei says
It’s nice to wake up to find a post by you…I must sheepishly admit that I often check to see if you’ve put up a new post before I go to bed, and often you have- so there have been a couple of occasions where I have met you in my dreams. Nothing weird, we just hang out with your girls and I imagine it is much like when your girlfriends come over…chatting, laughing, being. 🙂
Soaking up some of this CA sunshine lately, and I must I always welcome the rain (we’re forecasted to get some next week). It helps balance me, and like you- have a “do less” day. Plus, I love how after the rain our hills turn a beautiful shade of green! I think a lot of people under-appreciate a good rain day, forgetting that it’s necessary to rejuvenate life (nature’s, and our own).
Happy weekend to you, Kelle…and as always thank you for the inspiration you bring through your photography (I am trying to take more pictures and blog more as well).
Xoxo,
Erin

Nothing wrong with a little rain, cherry pie and a well baby! We are actually getting sunshine today and it may even get up to about 50 degrees! Hoping the snow melts once & for all. I am sure the neighborhood will emerge from the winter months of cold & snow and meet up in each others yards to ooh and ahh at how much everyone has grown while cooped up. Have a fun weekend. xo

I love “Do Less” days and long for more. The pictures of Nella at her one year check-up are beautiful. I will definitely have to check out those blankets. Growing up in South Florida, I’d never experienced the magic of a snow day until my new SC town got buried for a few days last month! It was pure bliss! Sledding, coffee drinking, snow-exploring bliss! I grew up with hurricane days, of course, but there’s something nice about an unexpected day off where you don’t have to board up windows 🙂
Melody says
I love Nella’s teeth in the last picture! I’m a native Floridian and miss the “Sun Showers”- where the sun shines and it’s raining.

Here in Western Oregon, it rains so much and so many days a year I’ve forgotten that “do less when it rains” feeling. But I still love a good rainstorm, even though they’re common. Rain speaks to me. I’m so glad we’re stationed in a rainy state for this tour!

I love this post. I love that cozy ‘do less’ feeling. We live in the Seattle area so we have A LOT of those days. Being from Missouri I always loved rainy days that meant we are going to stay inside, sip coffee, watch movies and just chill…. but living here I have had to shift my thinking because if we ‘did less’ every rainy day… we would never do anything!!! I love the rain but I look forward to the day when we move back closer to home and we have fewer of them so we can really enjoy them again.

I love Do Less days! We’ve had a lot of snow so it’s been super cozy here. Just playing together and watching movies. I can’t wait until spring brings rain though. I miss the rain. It’s soothing and relaxing. I love Nella’s SO big!! It’s so cute (and a great baby show off:0). Thank you for a much needed relaxing read!
Stef says
Nella is such a happy, healthy looking baby! I can’t get over her infectious smile! I find myself smiling back at her pictures when I see them – then I realize, she can’t actually SEE me smiling at her 😉
We’re in the opposite boat you’re in, weather wise. But we live in Washington State – so we’re a little bit over the cloudy, rainy weather. Even though we haven’t had THAT much rain over the past few weeks, its just that we miss the sun. We’re from California, so I guess there’s a learning process that goes along with all this moving from state-to-state 🙂
I’m still enjoying finding ways to love and appreciate this weather – mostly because I refuse to have children who grow up gripping about weather patterns. Its all good.

We’ve been having those kind of days lately also. Though our rain has now been replaced by cold. And the cold also makes me want to “Do Less”. Hope you have a great Do Less weekend.

“Let yourself be in the emotion, go through it, give in to it, experience it. You begin to go toward the emotion, rather than just experiencing the emotion coming toward you. A relationship, a dance begins to develop. Then the most powerful energies become absolutely workable rather than taking you over, because there is nothing to take over if you are not putting up any resistance…the music and the dance take place at the same time. That is the lion’s roar.” ~Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche

So glad Nella had a wonderful check up! Such a healty, vibrant girl, and she IS “so big”! Love the do nothing pictures, reading books snuggled under a blanket and watching the rain through the door. And I think I spied a cloth diaper again 😉
We’ve had a few too many “do less” days around here between sickies, numerous cold snowy days, and magical Christmas elves who popped back in for a five year old birthday surprise and all the glorious mess that accompanies celebrating another year of life with our sweet “little” boy. Forget the slippage phase, we’ve dipped way down into full on “grab a shovel, it’s time to dig out” phase. So that’s our today. It’s a balmy 44 outside, so we have window blinds open, pretending spring is on it’s way and cleaning like we wanna find the floor so we can dance. 🙂 And we will dance, and play for a bit, to celebrate a job well done before moving to the next room and do it all again. 🙂 Enjoy your do nothing day!

Ah, and we are having a weekend of “do more”. 45 today and 49 tomorrow (sadly, these are very warm days). Blue skies beaconing to come outside and to romp in the sun and the wind and the dirt. We spent 2 hard hours at the playground and now I need the nap as much as Alex does. Ah, but the silence has my sewing machine whispering sweet nothings to come and play. So I must because that’s where I find my zen.
And we have a disaster of glitter in the kitchen and living room from Valentines, but on the note of do less…it just glimmers in the sunlight.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend. And I’ll have to try your mom’s trick for remaining scraps.

Come live in Vancouver – you could have lots of “do less” days here! 🙂 But, we’re all-good with it! A true Vancouverite grows an umbrella out the end of their arm, every year from about October to April….And – then in the remaining months, we don’t need it as an appendage – but, keep a couple behind the front door – just in case – so that every time we leave the house, we can be prepared! Rain is good – it keeps everything green – and a lady’s complexion beautiful! :)……..
I do love all the ‘rain stuff’ you found to capture with your camera. I rarely think to take pictures of puddles – and – rain on my rear-view mirror – and umbrellas – even cute ones – because, well – they’re all a constant – nuthin’ picture-worthy there! I can see that I was wrong – I’ll have to try some shots of my own….
Love your pictures of your girls – and Nella’s “so big” picture – oh.my.gosh! How cute is she?? Little Miss Personality Babe! So happy that you received a “well-baby” check-up….

Kelle-
Your “the see-saw must shift its balance from time to time” comment jumped off the screen for me…When I was 5 years-old I sat on the “high side” of a see-saw at recess & when the whistle blew to line up the kid on the other side jumped off. I crashed to the ground, breaking my leg as the see-saw came down on it. The see-saw must and will shift from time to time and occassionaly it shifts with such unexpected force that our lives are changed. Your family experienced a major shift just over a year ago and although as scary as your new reality must have been at first, I don’t think you would change any of it. Shift embraced.

Amazing. I used this new post as a reward for myself only after I cleaned up my room and put on my running clothes (I DO NOT LIKE RUNNING BUT I am TRYING!). On my way to my room to read this, I noticed that it’s pelting rain outside.
Ugh.
After reading this, I know I can do it….one quick lap around the lake, and then a hot bath and a cup of coffee.
Thanks!

Your posts remind me that the part of motherhood that I have always dreamed of is not just missing in my life, it’s just not quite there yet. I want to do so much with my kids (daughter recently 2 and son 7 months), but I find myself in a tornado of stress very frequently – too frequently. I know that I could do better in this stage and that I often don’t know the extent of my childrens’ abilities because we all get bogged down by the day-to-day. But I also know that they’re still babies! All the activities I have planned and looked forward to will still come. When my daughter is just a bit older, she will talk to me and tell me about what she’d like to do. I can’t wait! Thanks for the reminders of what is to come:-)

OK, so we know YOUR favorite Nella photo. I suggest a blog vote for all of OUR favorite Nella photo. All commenters who happen choose the most popular one get to donate to Nella’s DS fundraiser as our prize. OK, so it’s not the way most contests work, but as parents, we need to get used to thinking outside the box, at least enough to stay a step ahead of our sweeties :-). Pie looks great… Must be Michigan cherries!

Not sure how it’s possible but Nella just gets more and more adorable! Glad she is “well” – nothing better than healthy babies!

I’ll second that!

Our mom used to do that with the left over pie crust too!! Good memories.
Your pictures of Nella always make me want to look back through all the pictures of my little sister…Raelynn. She also has Down Syndrome. She is our family’s caboose…#6 of 6. Our family wouldn’t be complete without her. She brings much joy to our lives.

OMG gorgeous photos. And what a cute well baby!!

You described that storm feeling so well! I grew up a CA girl, so when I now wake up in DC with snow on the ground and my 3 year old shrieking, “Snow!”, it still seems surreal. I love that first ‘do less’ day. Though, I’ll admit that I get anxious for it to melt after a day or two. Hard to shed those warm climate roots! Those well-child visit pics of Nella are so adorable! They remind me of the happy mood I feel when my favorite kiddos come in for their visits. And that pic of Lainey where she is sort of looking off into the distance? Dude, the mood of that picture just nails it. 🙂

Love your new header!
LOVE THE picture of Nella..playful and sweet.
I ‘practiced’ being present today when playing with my son. I was amazed at how relaxed I was when I truly shut off the to do’s that had been running through my head. We giggled…his awesome true giggle, and mine. Do Less really can mean so much more!
Michele says
I’m new to your blog and this might be my first time to comment. I love the idea of a ‘do less’ weekend. We could all benefit from a little do less! I’ve always thrown away my leftover pie crust until now. Thanks for sharing about the cinnamon sugar trick. I’ll try it next time I bake a pie. Sounds yum!

I cannot believe how big baby-girl Nella is getting!

Well, we are doing less by no choice thanks to Influenza A stopping by for a visit. :o( 3 Rxes for Tamiflu at $40 a pack! And today is our first sunshine day in a while and I would have loved to have soaked some vitamin D up! Oh well, always next week!
Love today’s pictures! They are so soft and sweet.
:o)

Oh my goodness! My daughter lives for her little blanket. She calls it a “B”, takes it everywhere and searches for it when she needs comfort. I love the little lovies (although we have multiples and switch them out so they don’t wear out or get a distinct smell 🙂 )
Fresh Mommy says
What a delightful do less weekend indeed! I’m definitely NOT doing less as I’m away from home, and my kids, for work… but most certainly had a fill of doing less last week while we were all buried in our home (in Michigan) and sick 🙁 The upside? LOTS of cuddle time.
Love your littles!

My mom used to also make cinnamon sugar treats with the left over pie dough. It was so yummy to eat warm from the oven, while you waited for the pie to finish baking. My boys are not as in love with them as I was, but they do love a good apple pie.

We LOVE “So Big”. My daughter’s speech therapist taught us “So Big” when she was a baby and it was her favorite thing!!! Sometimes those well baby visits can just make your day.

Kelle,
Since being led to your blog (insert “work of art”) a few weeks ago, I have spent hours pouring over your words and photos.
Your story about Nella’s birth really moved me, and though our experiences are vastly different (though similar in the “suprise” at birth), I can relate to your words on so many levels.
I read, I laugh, sometimes I cry, I think a lot and I sit with my mouth agape at the beauty of your shots, the fabulous shoes that you wear and how you and your sweet girlies always looks like your fresh from a stylist! 🙂
I will be back… not in a creepy, stalkery way, but in a blog-following, can’t wait to read what’s next sort of way! 🙂
Thanks for sharing your life and talent!
Kristi

My grandmother always did that with leftover pie crust as well – and we always called them “bones”. Matter of fact, it’s a good day for those bones here in the northeast!

“baby shows off” weapon of choice…great words. My kids each have one they brandish whenever someone comes over.
Do Less is my everyday mantra. Maybe that’s why my house looks like this…I’d better go do something.
Love the blog!

Kelle, the rain pictures are gorgeous! Love those. I love how a rainy day can slow down the pace of life and give the air a certain calm. I love how you take advantage of all the “seasons”! I woke up with the blahs today, but after reading this, I want to go conquer the world. You always pep me up like that! 🙂
PS. A friend shared with me your easy pork carnitas recipe. I’ve been cooking them all night in the crock pot. I just shredded the meat and sampled them. HEAVEN. 🙂 Thank you!

We are having “opposite day” to your weather up here in Ohio. It is 50 degrees today…a heat wave. We went to the Krohn conservatory to see all the spring flowers and then to our favorite park high above the Ohio River where the boys could run, climb across a small frozen pond, cross a bridge and enjoy the view all without having to wear a coat.
Happy weekending susan Great pics!

I am constantly surrounded by british accents and bad weather – and find it very easy to ‘do less’ with my 2 little ladies.
However my films of choice tend to be full of american accents, cowboys and sunshine…. I guess we all like the escapism of the different!

Your third photo–rain splashing–is possibly one of my favorite non-kid photos of yours ever. Awesome.
Glad you’re having what some would call a snow day. We still have 2 1/2 feet on the ground which I love, but also looking forward to barefeet and swimsuits.

I do not know you at all.. but I think you are so beautiful. Your spirit.. your soul is so there. I thank you for your post – they bring a perspective to my life that I think I need at times.
Way to go on the do less weekend.

Cracker Pie is what my mom always called the leftover pie crust that we put cinnamon sugar on and baked. The perfect snack for a Do Less sort of weekend!
Sister Sara says
In our house growing up the left over pie crust baked with cinnamon and sugar was “Johnny Crust.” Mom is not sure why we called it that, except that her mother always called it too!
It is my all time favorite treat!!

mmm, the rain. something especially calming&comforting about it – allowing us to celebrate the change both with our bright boots&umbrellas, and with our snugglyblanketcoveredselves pressing noses to the paned glass.

I’ve never been a pie person (cake-girl all the way!) but one of my favorite memories from childhood is watching my mom roll out pie dough… knowing that any scraps would be covered with sugar & cinnamon and baked up special for my brother & I to enjoy.
Love the pic of Nella & the doc and such a fab “so big” from her bag of tricks!

Hello,
Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Thomas Mittower and I am on a quest to provide equestrian therapy to special needs kids in a rural area of Central California. My theory is every baby and toddler needs a blanket or two or three and if people find out they can support equestrian therapy for even one special needs child and get a blanket they want for their child at the same time it is a win/win.
What I am looking for here is a link to the website: http://www.buybabyblanketsnow.com and I am willing to reciprocate a link back to you.
If I have your interest but you are not convinced, there is more information about this quest at http://www.buybabyblanketsnow.com/equestrian-center.
Thank you for your time and I hope to hear back from you soon.
