Home has had a double meaning this week, defining both going home and coming home–the former nostalgic and inspiring; the latter–well, the same, I guess. Knowing last night was our last among such a different landscape–one that had me slayed and hesitant to give up–I obsessively drank it in. I took two walks on the snowy trail behind my cousin’s house yesterday, each with a different child.

My cousin Joann, who might as well just be a sister.
I watched more attentively as the sky changed from a cold white to an elusive periwinkle come dusk.
I made note of how cozy it was to fall asleep between my girls, under the warmth of an electric blanket, lulled to sleep by wind that whistled outside a frosty window. And I breathed in the contentment of knowing just past our bedroom door was a hallway that led to family. Little cousins, big cousins. That has been the best part of all of this.
The girls offered their help with Cousin Brooklyn’s homework. Brooklyn even let Lainey write in some answers…because it was just a “rough draft.”
I lived in Michigan for twenty-four years and never realized that snow-dusted pines or the silhouette of a bare-boned tree against icy blue sky was so breathtaking. I don’t know if it’s being away for so long, growing up, or gaining more photographic perspective, but Good Lord, I could not shut up about just how picturesque my home state is.
I took a gazillion photos, practically hopping out of the back seat while the car was still moving to catch a barn in the snow, a bird in the snow, a vibrant-colored anything against the cold white snow. A little something I learned: I dig snow photography. So much, I made my cousin’s girls brave the wind one afternoon for a sister shoot.
And I was shocked at just how much my sun babies loved the change in pace. They never complained about the cold–not once.

I love when sisters hold hands, unprompted.
Lainey and I made a snow bunny yesterday, my snow specialty.

He now resides in my cousin’s garage freezer.
Followed by hot cocoa.
Favorite moments?
Thinking so many times to myself, “Lainey will never ever forget this trip.” I imagined how she will describe it years from now–how it carved little grooves in her memory of the importance of family, the thrill of adventure, the inspiration of new places and experiences.
Giving the girls nightly baths in the big tub and all the cousin girls coming in to the bathroom to circle the tub and talk while they soaked.
A true Michigan welcome of grilled venison tenderloin dinner.
Cousin time.

Thank you, Lisa, for coming up to see us! xoxo
Following trails of snow tracks and listening as Lainey hypothesized on all the things it could be. She concluded it was “a scary kitty.”
Watching the budding walker. She’s been walking for a while, but this trip she really walked. Like determinedly. Falling down and getting right back up. And she likes to wear glasses while she does it. They’re courage glasses.
Getting to attend my little cousin’s cheer practice and watching my girls adoringly take it in.
Seeing Lainey stop and drop a snow angel like it was her job.
Cocoa mustaches.
Anything red in the snow. Barns, walls, scarves. They’ve got a thing going there, that red and white combo.
And finally, I am loving coming home. A different one that might not have bewitching tree skeletons in the snow or icy blue night skies or evergreen trails that beg for walks with blankets and mittens and hats, but still nostalgic and inspiring–warm and energetic. As our plane descended into Fort Myers tonight, I began gathering our coats and hats with which we boarded and tucking them away in our carry-on. The vast blue Gulf slowly came into view, its waters magically catching the light from the late afternoon sun. I was again inspired with new perspective. How wonderful it is to live by the sea.
It was strange walking in tonight, the tree still lit, toys we forgot about lined against bedroom walls, the familiar scent of “our home” drawing me in. It took being gone so long to come back and realize our home has a scent–a welcoming, cozy signature scent that is ours.
I woke up in the middle of the night last night with the stomach flu–so bad, I was certain we’d have to change our flight. But I knew it was time to come home, and I was ready. After the most trying flight of my life (girls were great, I was a hot mess), I can’t tell you what a relief it was to walk in our home tonight and feel the comfort of our own space and the promise of what it holds for this year.
I am ready to embrace new creativity and the productive storm that follows a good needed rest. I am so inspired by this past week–just the fuel I need.
Wherever home may be, there are so many ways to appreciate it.

Wow! Beauty runs in your family. Look at those beautiful girls!
LOVED keeping up with your pictures on Instagram!! So jealous of the snow. And it makes my heart happy that Nella’s walking full force now 🙂
<3 the cute snow bunnie 😀
Oh, Kelle … these photos are incredible. You have such an amazing way of capturing those small moments that most would miss. Your trip away looks fabulous and the girls, as always, are just beautiful. <3
Your photo’s are stunning! The pictures of your cousins, amazing! The snow bunnie is so cute, we live in Eastern NC, and I miss seeing snow like we had as a kid in MD.
Too cute!!Love the pic of Nella sporting the hat and stellar leg warmers with a silly grin!!! Enjoy some of the warm Florida ocean air for me – Philadelphia’s been freezing this week!!!

YAY Nella for walking! That’s amazing! (and LOVE the wintery pictures…much more like what we see here in Vermont!)
I loved the pictures of your girls!! Especially the one with Nella sleeping and Lainey holding her hand, those are one of those moments that just take your breath away when you are a mom! Thanks for making me remember! Happy New Year!
You make me want to appreciate the snow I see 24/7 :).
Divine pictures and … Nella is walking?!? How exciting :).
You have a beautiful family. Great pictures. I am loving Bella in the glasses, so adorable
Oh, I love it! I’m the Michigan, Flint girl and I felt so at home looking at those photos. I grew up spending the summer at a cabin not too far from where you were. The snow looked perfect! We were in Flint for Christmas, but no snow. I’m so happy for you snow-bound time back home. Thanks for the warm fuzzies!! 🙂
I love how much snow you guys have got, that’s great. Your wee girl looks darling in those first photos as well. Excellent post as always Kelle.
Your cousin’s girls are beautiful! You captured them so well. Nella is amazing, and I LOVE those walking pictures. Lainey is a perfect snow bunny like her mom. Your pictures from this trip were some of your best I’ve seen on here. Your heart was most def. in it:).
Gorgeous photos…so glad you got to go to Michigan to be with your family…yay for Nella walking!!
That last picture of one of your cousins is A-mazing! And the ones of Nella walking are frame-worthy. Looks like an amazing trip!
Welcome home Kelle! Sounds like you had a wonderful time
I am so glad you had such a wonderful time : )
Your family looks supremely awesome.
Lainey is a kick @&$ snow angel maker. Oh my.
I looks like you had an amazing time. I grew up in Northern Ontario and these photos actually made me miss the snow.
Love those shots of nella walking. And the chocolate mustache… 🙂
Love the pictures of your cousins girls. They are gorgeous. I’m so glad you had a great time at home and a safe trip back home. 😉
LOVE the black & white photo you took at the “sisters shoot.” Breathtaking!! So glad you had a wonderful trip. Hope you feel better soon!
There was barely any snow when we went to the top of the mitten last week, and I am so grateful that you shared so many shots of it. I am missing my Michigan winter right now.
Also, a friend shared this link with me and (after sharing it with my mom, who brought a handsome man into this world with his own magical extra chromosome), I am immediately passing it on to you. Made me think of your photo shoot out in California. I know you will appreciate this.
http://thedailywh.at/2012/01/05/this-is-just-great-of-the-day/
you capture everything so beautifully. Its strange to picture that world up north as we watch palm trees sway, but then again, lately our weather has been prepping me for our trip to MI. I almost sent you an email today- some of the local ds moms are coming over to my house for just some play time and mommy talk, but I figured you were still up north. You are more then welcome to join us if you are up for it, but I don’t blame you for wanting to stay home after a trip away.
What an amazing trip Kelle! But I am sure Brett was so happy to have his girls back.
The picture of Nella walking and smiling is priceless. 🙂
Looking forward to another year of your creative energy!
your zest for life keeps me inspired…thank you and a Happy New Year to you
Truer words I haven’t read Kelle. I’m sure Lainey will remember it always, what a wonderful gift from your inlaws. Sometimes “experiences” are far better presents than things. Coming home is one of my favourite things, the scent, the familiar things, my own comfy bed.Having just spent a month at home on holiday, we both realised we could easily spend another month here easily. Sorry to hear about you being unwell, hope you get better real quick.
Kelle, you got me with this one. I left my beautiful snowy small town last night and sat exhausted in the window seat as we circled around the city I’ve chosen to live in, 3,000 miles away. I’m sitting here alone in my house now, waiting for friends to come and pick me up and take me climbing and out for a drink….but I’m a mess, Kelle, a hot mess..although I’m not sure I’m the definition of ‘hot’ right now….anyway, knowing I’m not the only girl who lives (happily) out of her climate is really helpful. I hear you, sister.
Much love
Lina
I am so happy for you that you were given the gift to travel home. I have been looking forward to your posts all week. Even though I live in MN, I tend to take what you have for granted. It was beautiful to see the winter wonderland through your eyes. Things that are commonplace for us hold a whole different meaning and value for you, and made me appreciate them in a new way. Thank you for opening my eyes to my every day goodness. Hope you are feeling better soon, and fall back peacefully into your routines at home. Oh, and your cousin’s girls? Stunningly beautiful. What a lucky Mama. Hugs!
snow photography is awesome!! love the pics! so glad your kids enjoyed the snow so much!!
I have so enjoyed this snow series!! Love seeing those happy girls of yours!
Cant get enough of Nella’s smile, just Beautiful!
I cannot get over how pretty those three girls are. WOW! Talk about some beautiful eyes. I am so glad you all got to have a snowy time!
Beautiful photos! I recently moved to LA, and going home to cold weather for the first time this year was weird…but unfortunately there wasn’t any snow! Hopefully there will be some next year when I go home for Christmas =] Love the cozy cabin photos!
http://www.existation.com
There is no place like home. Thanks for sharing. Gorgeous photo shoot…modeling should be their future.
I absolutely adore all of the photos in this post- it looks like you had a great time with your family. SO happy to see pictures of Nella walking- go girl, go! 🙂
I just pre-ordered my copy of Bloom & I’m so excited to get it!! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! 🙂
Glad that you are feeling better and that you are loving being home. It is always so refreshing to come home after an adventure, it really makes you appreciate the comfort of your space!
I’m originally from Ohio, and we went home for Christmas last year. I miss the snow more than I thought I would. We live in Va Beach now, and the girls keep asking when it’s going to snow! We had a freak snow storm last year. Seeing your pictures really makes me miss home.
Beautiful photos… my husband talks about the UP all the time. His family had a cabin there when he was a child. This makes me want to plan a surprise trip up there for him.
you all had such a great time. the hubby & i loved michigan … we were there in Sept 2011. such a beautiful state. went all over the mitten. enjoyed the pasties. they are to die for … so different. the people were so friendly. the views & pics i got were amazing. mackinac island was great. got a great view from out campground there of the bridge & a sunset. greenfield village/ford museum was fun & interesting. sure hope you are feeling better really soon. (:
Hope you recover quickly from the stomach flu! It’s a yucky one going around this year and it can take a few days to be back to “normal.”
What amazing pictures (as usual). You make me miss the snow – – and I HATE cold weather and snow – LOL! Your last few posts inspired me… to buy a scarf and matching ear muffs. You look awesome in hats, by the way. It’s not wearing winter hats I dislike – it’s suffering through staticy hat-hair after taking one off 😛 Tomorrow I’ll be tearing through my still-packed-from-the-last-move boxes to find my old fur cap.
Great post – beautiful photos! I’m glad you had such a great time! I live in Canada and all year, I feel such gratitude that we have 4 distinct seasons in our area (near Ottawa). I do my best to soak in each one for their respective beauties. Thank you for sharing your delight in winter and for renewing my gratitude for this season…
Great post.
I went “home” to Colorado and enjoyed a slow pace with family, watched my kids play with their cousin, my cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. It was magical and the only time since leaving six years ago that I actually thought, “I could move back here.”
Then we came HOME, to Oregon. And, I can;t imagine living anywhere else.
Aren’t we blessed to be able to enjoy and feel at home in different ways.
That is why I call my blog, “home is…what you make it”…
Sigh. Warmth to my soul.
I live in Northern Canada, and it’s always nice to read something like this to get new perspective on the snow and cold, frost and ice. It was just what I needed today.
Thank you.
(and your pictures are crazy gorgeous. Wow!!)
xoxo
Andrea
OMGoodness, I thought you were absolutely beautiful from the moment I started following your blog……Then came your cousins! WOW!!!! Your entire family is beautiful! Those girls look like models! So happy you had such a wonderful visit with your family~~But I do have to admit, “There’s No Place Like Home~~There’s No Place Like Home!” Hope you are feeling better sweet Momma.”
Picture of Lainey and Nella holding hands in the car is priceless!
Makes me want a sister for my daughter:)
feel better.. make a snow bunny picture album… for the girls…
Soooo sorry you had the flu bug, and the fact you made it through a flight with 2 kids by yourself while sportin’ that flu? Aaaahmaaazing. I completely agree with you about being away from the snow. We just moved from MI this year. I feel we left a very depressed, cold state behind. I haven’t missed it yet – but I agree the beauty of snow when it first falls, the clean hots of the boys sledding together. One day, I’ll take them back.
The Midwest is the best!!! In two weeks I’ll be home in Wisconsin and I’m freakin’ excited. There better be snow too… 🙂 Snow photography is amazing, I miss the snow lots and lots! So happy you had an amazing time! xx
OH man!! I hope that you’re feeling all better!!
hahaha…what happened to the middle of my last comment? the clean hots? wtf?? there was a lot more to that last part, but I can’t stop laughing long enough to retype it now. lmbo
one of my favorite posts ever. love your roots and where you have bloomed 🙂
goregous photos, as always!
feel better! hope the girls stay healthy!
have a great weekend back at “home”!
That picture of the lake. It makes a person feel. So lovely. You’ve made me homesick, and happy to be in my home all at the same time. Thanks 🙂
Amazingly beautiful photos! MUST get my kids up north one of these winters. Happy New Year, Kelle!
I was saying how Gaylord is probably a lot prettier than the Burton (aka Burtucky) Courtland Center area. But anyhoo..
Ahhh… I am on the brink on going “home” (9 days but who is counting?!?) and can’t wait for all of those feelings- both the ones for being there and the ones I will feel when I get back (Australia to Boston/Florida then back to Australia). I get so homesick for the US but know I will have those same feelings when my visit is up and it is time to head back… Thanks for this post. It was lovely!
Gorgeousness all around… great pix & clearly there is an abundance of the beauty gene in your family! And check out Miss Nella with the walking… you go girl! Such a wonderful “I’m almost two now watch me go” early birthday present. Take care of you & hope you feel better soon.
xo
Kate
i love your pictures oh so much. your cousin’s girls are BEAUTIFUL! 🙂
Beautiful!!!!! Beautiful pictures,Beautiful scenery, beautiful pictures, your beautiful girls, beautiful you, beautiful vaction, beautiful vibrant colors and beautiful memories!!! You are so inspiring!!!
LOVE THIS! Looks so beautiful!!! Sounds beautiful.
Absolutely love that third picture of Lainey just grinning away with her colorful little scarf on…So darn cute! Glad you had a wonderful time in Michigan. No snow in S.E. Michigan yet. Still waiting for the first measurable one to hit down here. Since we’re moving (locally) in a couple of weeks, I hope it will hold off a bit longer. Loved your snow photos, though, and hope you feel better soon! 🙂
loved “wherever home may be, there are so many ways to enjoy it.”
thanks for sharing the beauty you find EVERYWHERE!
Oh my God, the more you talk about this trip, the more I really really feel I need a vacation. A trip to a little cabin somewhere. Maybe not far away (because there are some pretty cool cabin get aways in Missouri) but I just need to be gone from here for awhile. You’ve inspired me to find a place we can go.
p.s. Nella walking? Slays my heart. ::tears::
It is so important to love where you live and live where you love. Thanks for the reminder!
Kelle, I can relate to this post so much. I’ve often asked myself how home is defined. We’ve moved 9 times in our 9 years of marriage, 3 different states and India all in the bag. Half of my childhood I lived in WA state and the other half in Alabama. Home is so relevant. I loved how you talked about seeing your home state through your eyes now and it being even more beautiful than you remembered…I totally get that. Loved it, thank you.
Seeing the photos from this trip warmed my heart. There is just something about moving far away to really make you appreciate your homestate. And when you do go home, I think you love all those little bits that you once took for granted.
Thanks for sharing the snow. Though most winters I don’t miss snow, I think if we moved back I might gain a deeper appreciation for it.
From a fellow midwestern transplant,
Sarah
Holy Gorgeous Girls!
And Nella in the Courage Glasses….oh, oh, oh! I did a laugh-cry out loud! I love her, Kelle. I really love her.
Welcome home, and so sorry you had to fly sick! Thank goodness you have a good scent to come home to. We live in a valley where a pulp & paper mill are the main industry. Oh, and there’s an eco (compost) station somewhere around here, too. So needless to say, when we come home after being away, our house sometimes smells like poop.
Much love to you and your snow/sun bunnies,
Kelly
Really!! I thought it couldn’t get any better than the shot of your girls holding hands,… and then came the pics of Nella in glasses! AMAZING!! Such wonderful memories for all of you! Lainey looks absolutely lovely in the snow, and Nella looks like she was born for it! Awesome news about her walking, cannot wait till my little girl can pull up!
Thanks for sharing your lovely family, cousins and all! Fun!
Love the cute pictures of Nella walking! You have shown me how much more I need to appreciate living in this snow-covered state! Minnesota FINALLY has a little snow on the ground, and before it melts with our highs of 50 lately (!?!) I think I need to get out there with my camera!
Love all the pictures. Love Lainey’s photos in the snow. Beautiful cousin sisters. What fun this visit must have been. I can’t begin to tell you how important cousins are. I lost my best friend and cousin last year to H1N1. So glad that you have yours tomake memories with. The one picture of Nella walking made me laugh outloud.
Snow is beautiful but so is sand. I was telling family about how you go to the beach in the winter and how much fun that would be.
Happy New Year.
There are too many fabulous photos to comment on….but for starters, that B&W photo of your cousin’s daughter was GORGEOUS, N walking around, L & N admiring cheer practice….just GORGEOUS. such beautiful memories….
Ugh….bless your heart! You flew home with the stomach flu?! You’re more of a woman than I’ll ever be, not sure if I could do that. So glad you had a wonderful trip. Absolutely love the picture of you with your cousins around the bath tub. And your cousin’s daughters are gorgeous, beautiful photo shoot! Now rest mama…feel better!
GORGEOUS post. I can’t handle the cold and generally have no desire to leave the sun, but this post makes me want to slap on some red lip stick and scarves and RUN to the snow. :o)
I caught the flu this week too — hope you feel better!
Seriously. You’re lucky you’re so smoking hot yourself, or else a girl could get a complex… I’m in MN near Minneapolis, and we have NO snow this year. It’s bizarro, and I agree with you that a little snow on the ground is OK. I got new skates from Santa and have yet to try them out!!?!?!!!
Thanks for sharing so much!
Amy
When I read that part about not realizing how picturesque your home state is, I found myself nodding in vehement agreement!
We recently moved overseas for hubby’s work to Singapore and I cannot begin to describe how amazing home is when we go back!
I think it’s something about looking at it through and ‘outsiders’ eyes. The perspective gained from being removed from something for a time is amazing.
I always need to be reminded that, “Wherever home may be, there are so many ways to appreciate it.” I moved to the desert from NY 10 years ago…I think I’ll always be trying to adjust! We just got back from a 2 week trip to NY and again…adjusting!! I envy your perspective!
I SO enjoy reading your blog. You are an inspiration on many levels. I agree that time away from your original home helps you see it in a whole new light. I suppose that is part of growing up. The desire to get out and see the world and then discovering there was beauty where you once were.
Thank you for all you put into your blog. I look forward to to reading new posts and find inspiration all the time. I even was inspired to create my own campfire for my kids last week after falling in love with yours. Oh and I know how you love a good bargain…did you find that sweater coat on sale at Anthropologie? I got mine for $25….unheard of and a total steal. Here’s hoping you did to. Happy New Year!
My Mystical Photography The word photography comes from two ancient Greek words: photo, for “light,” and graph, for “drawing.” “Drawing with light” is a way of describing photography. When a photograph is made, light or some other form of radiant energy, such as X rays, is used to record a picture of an object or scene on a light-sensitive surface.
So funny you mention not appreciating the beauty of your home state in winter. I have lived in CO for 22 years (since high school) and just this past summer became awake to the beauty of the mountains. Now I can’t get enough of them. Sitting on the porch and staring, photographing them, talking about them. Someone told me it’s a midlife thing. Hahaha!
Thanks for the beautiful post!
oh, this post made me tear-up a little. i guess i’m more homesick than i thought. *sigh*
so glad you got to be home… and now home.
Can’t believe you took a flight while recovering from stomach flu. It’s one of the top five worst nightmares of mine. You are my hero. Oh my lands. I hope you are feeling better.
this post was breath-taking and inspiring–so many wonderful things, no comment could possibly do it justice. but please know that you always inspire me with your words, pictures, and perspective. i hope you never stop writing.
soo glad you had such an amazing trip–and that no matter whether you’re in florida or michigan, you always happen to be home. life is so sweet.
There’s no place like home- home. Such great pictures. Living in the mountains, my best pictures are when there’s a snowy backdrop;) Love your blog!
Love reading your posts & seeing all the breathtaking photos you take! You have true talent!
Gorgeous photos! Welcome home, there and here 🙂
What beautiful pictures of Michigan, and your gorgeous family! I love living in Michigan (Grand Rapids, except for 8 yrs in Haslett), but this time of year, with so little sunshine, can get a little hard come February. So thank you for reminding me to appreciate more than usual the coziness inside, and the stark beauty outside. I forget to really see from time to time.
It’s wonderful getting to see more of your fantastic country. Your home state looks a lot like my country and I had no idea!
You all look so happy in all the pics and seeing so much family simply must have been awesome 🙂
I do hope you’re better from that stomach flu – that’s horrible really.
Have a totally wonderful weekend, now, with husband and daughters!!!!
I read this post in Google Reader on my phone and a few photos didn’t pull up. I had to come mere to see the photo I was really wanting to see – you girls holding hands. Adorable!! Of all the jaw dropping photos, that’s the one I wanted to see.
Beautiful post. It is so nice to love where you live and love where you are from. It is the same for me.
Kelle how do you do it, You always inspire and make me well up! Loved this post. LOVED! X
This post actually made me cry with the sheer beauty of it.
And I’m English.
Reading this just makes my heart swell. I’m so glad y’all had fun, and buckets of it!
Welcome home. Every single thing about this post made me smile. (Except the flu thing. That made me sad.) Your cousin has beautiful girls, LOVE those shots, and what a gift to them! And love Lainey in the snow. And LOVE LOVE LOVE little miss walking Nella!
I too miss all the things you do about home.
My favorite picture – Nella standing smiling and looking so proud (walking pictures).
Picture that made me cringe – Nella in her carseat. The chest strap, the one that would actually hold her back on impact is way too low.
I laughed out loud at some of your pictures. Those girls of yours are so cute. I will try to enjoy our Ohio snow more and forget about the 9 years we lived in Florida. Come next snowfall I am off to look for anything red to photograph.
What lovely sentiments and I smile when my 14 year old shouts “Mom! Come here and look at Nella’s picture!” (She is adorable.)
Glad to know you had a chance to come back to the Midwest, there is something special about snuggling together under blankets this time of year.
Looking forward to reading about your next creative projects and as always, enjoying your blog immensely.
Happy New Year Kelle!
beautiful trip, beautiful memories
Welcome home. There’s nothing like it in the world. I’ve had this obsession lately w the whole skeleton tree against the sky too. I stop the car, hop out and snap away. It’s crazy. I always used to hate the sight of a bare tree in winter……perspectives certainly change. xoxoxo
Pictures are amazing! The ones of your cousin’s girls in the snow…perfection, beautiful young ladies. Happy New Year!
Oh wow! what a beautiful inspiring post… I am so glad you could go home and come home, family is always an amazing fuel!
and Nella is walking!!! really walking, that brought a huge smile to my face, she is growing 🙂
Congrats on doing such an amazing job with your girls
So, so beautiful! And yay for Nella walking! 🙂
How much fun is that?? and your extended family is as beautiful as yours.
Inspirational..
Just from your stories & the beautiful pictures, I can tell what a wonderul, majestic time you had being home with your family. Heck…it made me feel all warm & cozy inside just looking at all your pics! Glad you & the girls made it home safely. 🙂
I loved these last posts. My husband and I grew up on Mackinac Island and miss our family, friends, and home so much (we now live in VA). MI is one of God’s greatest gifts and we yearn to return and raise our children there daily. If you are there again, you have to hit the Island…your pics would do it justice, I’m sure 🙂 Hope you feel better soon!

So much Joy in your post Kelle. Love all the girls sitting round the bath tub, love Nella walking and Lainey against the snowy backdrop. We had a thick covering of snow this time last year but it’s been much milder this year so our chirtmas was missing that brand of magic.
Enjoy being home x x x
Wonderful images and thanks for sharing them with your readers, all of your pictures tell their own story. Welcome to 2012. Richard
Beautiful photos throughout! So glad your girlies got to take in all of the beauty of the snow. We don’t have any yet in this part of South Dakota–so weird that it’s January and I went for a run OUTSIDE this morning and it wasn’t frigid! Hope you’re feeling better, Kelle!
I can just imagine the look on Nella’s face at cheer practice seeing the pyramind. Nothing short of wow, I bet! Pics of the girls make me smile so hard. And the bath photo is priceless. Just family. And comfort.
Happy 2012. I hope it’s all you dream it’ll be.
Kelle, so glad you are home safe and I hope you are felling better!
I’m sure by know you think I’m a certified stalker, but I’m not. The proof is in the fact that I know that lake, your cousins, their girls and those cheerleaders you captured and I didn’t once hunt you down to meet you :o)
I have been following your blog for over and year and am so grateful to you for sharing your feelings, creativity, positive energy and your family. You are an inspiration.
Happy New Year!
This is an amazing and inspiring post. Love the snow pictures! Your cousins are beautiful!!! Makes me want to take a road trip this weekend!
Me and my husband have lived in Central Florida all of our lives and have never experienced the kind of snow in your pics. It makes me want to take our kids on a snow-cation next year and soak it all in. Thanks for sharing your snow days with us and the teenage girls in the snow are stunning!
Sounds like you all had a great trip. Love all the snow pictures. I’m glad you and the girls made it back safe to Fl.
The b&w picture of one of your cousins girls laying in the snow is one of the most stunning photos I’ve ever seen. And is it weird that even though I don’t know you and your family personally, the pictures of Nella walking brought tears to my eyes. That precious little girl is such an inspiration. A college roommate of mine recently had a baby girl with DS. Watching Nella grow and learn makes me positively sure that my friends little girl is going to do the same. Thanks for always reminding us to enjoy the small things. Hope you feel better soon!
It looks like you and your girls had a fabulous, memorable trip! Beautiful photos, as always!

What a terrible batch of photos…but hey, if you want to share these poor quality shots, be my guest. HOLY CRAP, WOMAN!!!!! You should be a professional photographer! Wait, you are…HOLY CRAP, WOMAN! You should write a book! Wait, you are… HOLY CRAP, WOMAN! Secretly, I’d love to hate you but I don’t. I love you. Still praying you have fat ankles, though, just a teensy bit. And Nella walking? Brilliant. Lainey guessing it’s “a scary kitty”…love the distinction. Not scared, scary. And those photos of your cousins’ girls? As my mom would say, “Those girls should be in the pictures.” I believe she’s referring to the big screen. xo
I hope you start feeling better. I am glad you’re at your “by the sea home” safely and can recover there.
I have loved these last few posts! The pictures are amazing just as the words always are. Going home is so special. Reminds me of a post I did last year. (http://foreveryoungs-arika.blogspot.com/2011/01/magic.html) It was a magical Christmas and one that I will always remember! Thank you so much for letting us tag along on your trip home through pictures! Wishing you and your family an amazing 2012!
Once again….your photos are stunning. Your cousins girls ~ beautiful ~ and I love all the colors they have on.
The pic of Nella with the hat on and smiling big….priceless.
The pics of Lainey with her hat and coat, so cute.
And you look beautiful, as always.
I’m glad you got the time with your family and friends….and glad you’re home safely. xo
Snow bunnies for my babies…now on my “things to do when it snows” list 🙂
I am so jealous that just a few hours north of here there is so much snow. My kids have been sitting in their new sleds from Santa, in the house watching out the windows and waiting! You have given me a new perspective for my own home state. I live here, but I have wanderlust for sure. I always say my heart is in NYC, and that’s where I always wish I was. It was nice while reading these posts to make me aware that there is beauty here that I take for granted. So thank you for that.
Kelle, I am new mom. I absolutely adore my beautiful baby boy, but transitioning into motherhood has not always been easy.
Your life and your blog inspire and motivate me in a way that I can’t even describe. Sleepless night after sleepless night, I often want to just curl up on the sofa with my son and be a couch potato for the whole day (sometimes I do!).
When I read your blog, it motivates me to get up and seize the day. Something as simple as getting a shower or doing the dishes can be so hard with a new baby. When I read your blog, I am inspired to push myself to do those simple things that I struggle with. I look forward to all of your posts. Thank you for sharing your life and your beautiful family with us all.
I LOVED this post. Especially because I feel the same way about heading home to my family during the holidays. It is a grounding for me that I look forward to all year. It always reminds me of what is important in life and rejuvenates me like nothing else every will be able to.
what a beautifully written post! I too am from Michigan (the upper penninsula, Ontonagon) and there is just NOTHING like it! Michigan is HOME to me too. My parents still live there. and until recently 5 out of 7 of still live there!
gorgeous photos and memories!
love,
tara
I am from the Midwest, but now live in Arizona. We spend two weeks every summer in Michigan. Now I’m planning a winter visit!
Love those pictures of Nella walking – they totally made my morning! And again, my son is enthralled with her.
I’ve been in a creative funk lately. Word elude me, and your site – this post in particular – is just what I needed. The three minutes it took me to read your words was my little vacation. THANK YOU. You inspire me more than I can articulate.

After a good trip, I LOVE home too. There is something so magical about trips, and something entirely different, magical about home.
seriously LOVE the photos of nella walking and checking out her feet like OH YEAH that’s right! the one where lainey is in the background, hand on hip like a little momma… LOVE IT!! so cute!
Holy gorgeous sister!! Seriously wow Kelle!
Your photos are stunning as always
Beautiful post!
Love your blog, your voice, your pictures and stories and so happy you share your world, but could I suggest you consider next time that your stomach bug could do a lot of damage to someone who is immunosupressed and flying with you on the plane?
Kelle, it’s been a while since I’ve left a comment but I still read your blog as soon as you publish a post. Two years ago after you had Nella I took time to read your blog from the beginning to the latest post and I emailed you about it too. You gave me some good photography tips and now all this time later I’m still such a huge fan. I was excited for your trip to MI cause I knew you’d come back with awesome stories and beautiful photos. Thanks for being so inspiring. you rock!!!

Your cousins are stunning! What a great photo!!
Ok, I must know where those fabulous legwarmers came from that Nella is wearing…Hopefully somewhere that I can score a pair for my little peanut out here in Colorado!
Thank you for sharing your family and your incredible pictures…I can only hope to capture the amazing moments of my daughter that you manage to snap of both of yours!
What an incredible trip…Your photos are absolutely breathtaking–as is your family. I love how your younger cousins also dig the red lipstick too, and it looks like your girls will never forget their experience. Thanks for sharing!
Welcome home! Glad you had a great time here in the Mitt! I just wish we had snow south of Grand Rapids…its brown and bare right now! And downright warm…a stinking shame!
looks like great family time! how fun!
I thought I would share this article incase you had not already seen it

L-O-V-E, love that pic of your girls holding hands in the car. A view I get occasionally in the rear view from my own girls. It is the sweetest! And that pic of Nella walking, glasses in hand. And Lainey’s snow angels! You have a great eye…A-mazing photos!
Your cousins girls are gorgeous! I love this post….and I hope you’re feeling better!
Loved the picture of Nella smiling face w/her little hat on. She makes me smile everytime. Lainey’s precious snow bunny and snow angels looked like fun. Your previous post describing the crunch of snow under your boots sent me into a full blown trip down memory lane. I didn’t realize I missed that sound until you mentioned it. (OK, I miss the sound of the snow, the dead silence and random snow plows run past my house in IL. But I do not miss the cold and possibility of falling down on my behind that goes with it. Happy to be back in my home state of California.)
So glad you had a fabulous trip and that you shared it with us all.
Happy New Years!
Gorgeous photographs, as always.
You are an inspiration for many reasons- but today I find you even more amazing because… you traveled with two kids and the stomach flu. You had me at ‘I woke in the middle of the night with the stomach flu.’ The stomach flu is something I just can’t handle. That you flew with the flu and lived to blog about it, well, there should definitely be a badge for that.
May the flu have flown and may you recover peacefully in the comfort of home.
Walking Nella! Those pictures were my favorites.
Looks like such a fun trip! Janice and Joanne are my mom’s cousins too. I haven’t seen pics of the girls in years and my goodness, they are stunning!! I also love Nella’s courage glasses 🙂 Happy travels!
Those are gorgeous sister photos! Their mom is so lucky to have those shots.
Oh my gosh, the lil one is just adorable when she walks! Something you and Lainey can do as she gets a little older is research something together. I treasure the memory of my mom and I at the beach in her home country of Ireland and investigating all the shells, researching their names and learning so much together as we collected them!
home is the best. i agree. this christmas was great going home and coming home. i loved this post!
Kelle:
I just love your blog. I just started my own for my paintings, it is called “The Painted Lady” at http://www.bethhenson.com, if you ever have time check it out! Your photos are so inspirational to me, as well as your writing. CANNOT WAIT for your book; I have pre-ordered~!
The photo of Nella standing by herself, grinning widely w/ the cute hat on her head literally took my breath away! Your girls and family are just beautiful.
Your babies are so gorgeous! Such amazing smiles. 🙂
And wow, your cousins look like naturals in front of the camera. Incredible photography.
Kelly, thank you. Your perspective and insights truly make me a better parent. Just the fuel I need. 🙂
Oh, this just brought tears to my eyes. I grew up in Michigan too and haven’t been back in many years. Beautiful photos. Glad you had a wonderful time. – Amy

I love that too…coming back to Home Sweet Home. The first thing I do when I come though the door is inhale deeply though my nose. I know I’ve arrived!
Photos of Nella walking make my heart sing. And in glasses and leg warmers? Rock on!!!
kelle, your blog rocks my world. i love and soak up every single AmAzInG photo you post…oh how I wish you were my next door neighbor girl…i would like to be a bonus grandmama to your girls and hang out in my jammies with you and go to the sea together and watch you parent…but you brighten my days in ways you can’t even imagine! p.s., do you use photoshop? i just got CS5 and am freaked out by how hard it is? i have a blog too and always did my editing with basic elements. i thought i HAD to have the big kahuna, but now have buyers remorse! if you hve it, how did you learn it? xo beth
kelle dear? I was just wondering…do you edit all your photos before you post? they are simply THE BEST…trying to learn photoshop here in MN….xo beth
Home. However many and wherever they are, the best is coming home.
Love the appreciation exploding from this post.
I totally know your cousin Tessa. She shops at the jewelry store I work at. Shes gorgeous. Small world huh?
