Oilin’ Up: Natural Remedies for the Win

September 2, 2014 By Kelle

This post is sponsored by Jessica Litster, doTERRA Wellness Advocate.

A while ago, I shared about using doTERRA essential oils–something that’s become part of our home and wellness routine, one I’m loving learning more about.

I’m happy to reintroduce Jessica Litster, a doTERRA wellness advocate, who’s well-versed in essential oils and the ways they can help you live a healthier, calmer life. Jessica teaches people to take care of their health with a more holistic approach, incorporating natural remedies when possible. Essential oils have been used throughout history for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits and are effective against bacteria and viruses as well as combating ailments from congestion, headaches, anxiety and sore throat to earaches, heartburn and teething.

We started using doTERRA oils over a year ago, starting with simple immunity protection (rubbing On Guard oil on my kids’ feet–they love it!) and calming routines (lavender and eucalyptus oil in a diffuser). Our essential oil collection has slowly grown, and I now use oils in my beauty routine and carry them in my purse for quick remedies or to whip out and offer a friend when they complain of an ailment. I’ve passed out a few drops of peppermint oil to ease a headache and have given on-the-spot mini massages with some Deep Blue, and always love the response. It’s a great feel-good present you can give your friends.

 photo print1_zpsb2c03f09.jpg

After using some store bought oils, I can also attest to the fact that all essential oils are not created equal. doTERRA’s oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) and are guaranteed to be pure, natural, and free of synthetic compounds or contaminates. All of doTERRA’s oils go through rigorous testing to ensure extract composition and activity. Our oils last a very long time (a little goes a long way!).

There are a variety of essential oil kits to suit the needs of your family, and when you purchase a kit, you automatically become a wellness advocate which just means you are a wholesale member and receive the wholesale discount on anything you purchase (I became a wholesale member after the first oils I purchased–love getting the discount!).

My favorite way of using doTERRA oils is in our diffuser. It diffuses oils into the environment, and everybody benefits. I use Citrus Blend for an invigorating pick-me-up, Serenity and Balance for calm and stress relief and Lavender and Eucalyptus at bedtime, especially when the kids aren’t feeling well. My kids love our essential oil foot rub ritual as well–a few drops of oil on the bottoms of their feet and massaged in, in the morning and before bed.

 photo print3_zps0f0a9d82.jpg

And now for the fun part.

Since Essie and Sherwin Williams haven’t hired me yet for my dream job of naming their nail polish and paint colors, I decided this post was my lucky break. I’m going to give some aliases to doTerra oils to simplify their effectiveness, thereby making it much easier for me to know what to grab when needs arise.

It’s 6:00, dinner’s not ready, kids are losing it, kitchen’s a mess and you just pulled out a form from the backpack that says there’s a project due tomorrow. Cue dog peeing on the floor.

You’re thinking serenity oil?

 photo print2_zps48f02214.jpg

But wait. Serenity oil runs into a phone booth and comes out a caped superhero I like to call…

 photo print5_zps1f7d2277.jpg

Okay, here’s another one. Ready? The night the music teacher passes out recorders. And your kid brings one home. And plays it.  Hot Cross Buns. Eleven billion times.
Gotta headache? Peppermint oil has an alter ego.

 photo print4_zpse6bedf71.jpg

Rub a little in your temples and breathe in. (Then, if you’re really smart, break the recorder in half.)

See, that was fun.

Even more fun? A giveaway.

Jessica is giving away one Family Physician Oil Kit–stocked with 10 essential oils (Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Oregano, Frankincense, Deep Blue®, Breathe, DigestZen®, and On Guard) to get you started or to build the collection you already have. It’s the essential oil muthaload.

You can view terms and conditions below and enter by leaving a comment. If you already use doTERRA oils, tell us the three oils you use most (mine? Serenity, On Guard and InTune Focus blend). And if you don’t use essential oils, tell us an area in which you’re interested in finding some natural remedies–headaches, stress, house cleaning, staying on task, acne–you name it, there’s an oil for it. All of them? Yes please.

I asked Jessica to answer too–her three favorite oils?

On Guard- This is the protective blend. I use it preventatively to keep my kiddos and me protected from germs! It’s also the first oil I turn to at the first sign that we may be coming down with something. It kicks it so fast!

Balance- The grounding blend. I use this all day every day. It is for stress and anxiety and calms me down so quickly. I don’t leave my house without it!

Frankincense- The slogan with this oil is, “When in doubt, use Frankincense”. It is a powerful oil. It is amazing for hair, skin, and nails as well as bumps and bruises and cuts. It is also amazing for brain health and brain function. It adds a boost to any other oils you are using, so I layer it with other oils I am using!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

If you have any essential oil questions, fire them Jessica’s way: e-mail her at simpleoilsolutions@yahoo.com or check out her business site HERE. She’s an expert. And if you’re looking to make some extra income, she can tell you about opportunities within doTERRA (she’s a stay-at-home mom, building a career from home).  You can also join her Facebook group or follow her on Instagram  @simpleoilsolutions for more information.

I have been interested in trying the oils since reading your original post a while back! With a newborn, I am even more interested in the natural remedies versus using medicine for every ailment. I am interested in oils that can help with calming, teething, and stress reliever/headaches. I work full time and am working towards my doctorate in counseling on top of being a new mom so the stress is adding up quickly!

Essential Oils are a big part of our daily lives. I started learning about them after my son was diagnosed with Autism. Staples at home are lavender, frankincense, eucalyptus and vetiver.
My only problem with MLM companies is their claim that they are certified therapeutic grade. Who is certifying them? From my research no governmental agency or generally accepted organization “grades” or “certifies” essentil oils. There is no formally approved grading standard used consistently throughout the essential oil industry. What makes DoTerra better than any other essential oil? Would love to try their brand but they are far too pricey in comparison to others.

I am intrigued by what essential oils can do for people in their pursuit of wellness. I have fibromyalgia, and conventional medical practice has been to denigrate those who have it and to then throw narcotics at the problem. I refuse to take narcotics, so I have been investigating natural means (essential oils) to deal with the pain and fatigue. I am not there yet, but hope to start using essential oils in the very near future. I also have a son who suffers from occasional migraines and would love an alternative to the morphine shots he gets to relieve him of his symptoms!

I am not familiar with the Doterra oils. I do have a 9 year old son who has very bad allergies. He will get dark circles under his eyes and a horrible cough. He also sleeps like a maniac and could use a natural way to calm him down. He gets very bad anxiety. I suffer from migraines and extreme back pain. If the oils can help us, I’m in. My 3 favorite oils are
Elevation: it makes me so happy and gives me energy to keep going on Mondays;) and everyday. I basically use it as “my perfume”
Lavender: I love this calming smell and put it on every night for great sleep. I layer it with Balance, and there is NO waking up 100x a night!
OnGuard: It smells like Christmas to me! and I have not been sick once since I’ve been using it.

I have a fifteen month old at home and just began looking into essential oils. I would love to use the most natural, chemical-free options available for his precious little body. So far all we have tried was a bit of lavender at night with a foot massage before bed and I am LOVING it! He has been sleeping wonderfully and the few minutes we spend doing it are a sweet way to end our day together. I would love to find oils to use in the future for his fevers and to put on his scrapes to both clean and soothe. Thanks for the great blog post!

    Three I use the most:
Lavender : in the diffuser for calm/stress relief, rubbed on cuts, burns, blemishes for healing, and in room sprays!
Peppermint: I use a little of this mixed in some coconut oil with eucalyptus for sore feet & muscles! Ahhh, so good.
Lemon: my favorite! in coconut oil for lotion; cleaners, room sprays & diffuser for a lovely clean scent! SO GOOD.

Frankincense- my 15 month old is a master at falling down and bruises so easily! Typically I apply breastmilk but it isn’t working as well anymore.
Breathe- I have a 15 month old boy. Enough said!
DigestZen®- tummy issues run wild in our home. My husband has a terrible stomach and so do I, thus our deal sweet child also does. We have tried everything from over the counter meds to homeopathic meds to chiropractic help and NOTHING can help his gas issues!

I have a friend who gifted me a roller of peppermint oil long ago for headaches, which I sadly lost, and I do recall that it really did help. So those are the two I am most interested in, but would love to learn about the rest! I consider myself a scent-a-holic so anything that smells good would be fun for me.

    Lavender to calm mosquito bites.
Past tense headache roller …. Every day!
    Lemon oil in my water.
    Citrus bliss in the diffuser.
Serenity in the car helps my barf-prone dude with car sickness.
    Meleluca on a sore tooth.
Aroma touch to rub my hubby’s shoulders after a stressful day at work.

And more seriously … On guard. I have a debilitating neuromuscular disease called myasthenia gravis. I have to take immunosupressant drugs (yuck!!) so I rely on on guard to keep me and my family healthy.
Frankinsence. With the MG I noted above, I had my thymus removed, which also had a thymoma tumor. With it’s cancer-fighting properties, I rub frankinsence on my chest every day and look forward to my oncology visit every 6 months when they say, “no reoccurrence.”

I love doterra! Our supply could use a refresh!!

Then came my super crunchy granola friend who loaded up me up with the works! Clary sage oil, lavender, peppermint and another one I can’t remember. Something balance I think? While it didn’t put me into labor per say, I did enjoy my husband giving the baby bump a good rub down and oh man, those lavender baths were heavenly- especially after giving birth!

I use OnGuard in my diffuser during cold/flu season. I also use DigestZen since I’ve had my gall bladder removed and it’s fantastic (helps with nausea, too). Last, but not least, I put the InTune on my son when he’s a little, shall we say, out of his freaking mind hyper. I LOVE THESE OILS…and I’ve tried A LOT of different kinds. These are tops to me.

My first introduction to doTerra oils was when my Son had strep. He couldn’t keep the meds down and I really dislike giving him the antibiotic anyway. A friend recommended Oregano oil and then also On Guard. My favor is Lavender!

I have teenagers who could definitely benefit from anything to help with their skin. I have teenagers therefore “i” could benefit from anything to help with stress and lastly with the kids and two adults anything to help keep us all a little healthier (less dr.visits) would be beneficial as well. Thanks for the opportunity to help with any and or all of the above. 🙂

I have never used oils before, but have certainly been interested. I have been tempted to buy just from a department store, but now see that maybe they are not made the best? I get migraines frequently that I just cannot function through (loss of sight, immeasurable pounding near the temples or behind my eyes) and I’ve tried plenty of pharmaceuticals with no sure solution. Perhaps a look into a natural remedy could be the solution, I’m unsure but more than willing to try.
I also suffer from adult acne that flairs up randomly and of course at the most inopportune times (day before a wedding or vacation…)
My husband and I also work full time jobs leaving us with stress and anxiety over them, coming home to a calm relaxing home could do wonders that I never thought could be resolved with oils!
Please think of me as someone to help!

Breathe – our daughter is an allergy sufferer. She swears by this. A little in her diffuser each night, and some for her to breathe in on bad days works like a charm!

Lavender – I use this in our bedroom diffuser each and every time I sleep (I work shift work – so this definitely helps me with sleeping during the day!)

Deep Blue – I suffer from tension headaches and migraines. I love love love deep blue to massage into my neck!

I am engaged and spending time with my soon-to-be new extended family, who SWEAR by essential oils. My soon-to-be stepkiddos were visiting her this summer and came home from her ranch smelling of all sorts of amazing, calming things, and I’d love to give them a try. I’m most interested in anything that will help keep my new parent back to school stress levels down, as well as anything that will help all of us sleep better!

I have really been wanting to try essential oils…but as a college student just can’t afford it. I suffer from severe anxiety as well as migraines and a stomach ulcer. So basically anything that could help those is what I’m dreaming of.

My roommate last year did give me some lavender to help me sleep when my anxiety caused a bought of insomnia (which is does every now and then). It actually did help soothe me and I became accustomed to the scent of bedtime.

I use Lemon – EVERY DAY – I use it for freshening up the garbage disposal (oo gets so stinky in there), but I also love to drop it in my yogurt to make a delicious and smooth creamy vanilla lemon yogurt.

I love the citrus smells – so one of my favorite oils to diffuse is the Wild Orange. It helps with my mood, but also surprisingly helps with nausea from my more traditional treatment of Lyme.

The third – Peppermint – I love it for a “quick picker upper” and a “headache reliever.”

I really want to try some oils! My two main reasons are for my daughters allergies/asthma and for sore swollen joints (me)…any suggestions on what might work?! Thanks!

Would very interested in learing more about the oils. Especially calming & stress relief for me & my husband. Also, breathing easier for my 4 yr little boy with asthma and sleep apnea.

I need an oil to help me focus. Immune boosting for my kids would also be great.

I’ve always been interested in trying oils. Always looking for more natural ways to help with aches and pains, migraines, and when I feel a cold coming on.

I have just started reading up on essential oils! I have been looking for natural ways to reduce my biggest little love’s anxiety. Also, now that the kiddos are back in school…I want to bathe them all in OnGuard. Fingers crossed!

I am just beginning my journey with oils. So far I love them from shortening the cold season to taking away a headache. I would love to increase my collection.

oh this would be amazing, and incredible timing. I came THIS close to buying the family phys kit when someone I follow on IG was doing a promo, but opted out because I just couldn’t fit it in this month’s budget. And how perfect, just in time for winter flu & cold season!

I’ve never used oils but I have been stalking the doterra site for about a year!! I need them! But my budget tells me it’s more of a want than a need. With the 3rd baby due in feb this is now a must need!!

the post is so funny, loved the sense of humor induced in the details. Also the usage of the essential oils are imbibed within such funny real life incidents, that is really interesting and touching.

Thanks for the tip on frakense. I’ll check out do Terra. I’ve made a wide variety of my own oils now looking for some for a horse fly bite gone wrong.
