Spring Wardrobe Must Haves

April 5, 2019 By Kelle

While we experience close to constant sunshine here in Florida, I still tend to follow seasonal trends for fashion. That means I get unnecessarily excited when I hear people talk about sandal weather and short sleeves. It’s the Michigan in me, I guess. So when a friend recently told me she needed some new clothes for spring, wanted to revamp her entire wardrobe and asked for help, I got really excited, over achieved and made an entire blog post of my favorite must haves for the new season. I’m not officially calling this a capsule wardrobe because I’d add a few more things to make it complete, but if I were going away for two weeks this spring, this is definitely what I’d pack.

I’m trying on a few of these outfits to show you how they can be put together and linking a huge list of options at the end. None of these will break your budget, and I included several of my favorite Target picks right now in the mix (including that polka dot Who What Wear maxi skirt, a $12 graphic tee and two pairs of sunglasses under $20!).

Look at all the possibilities!

Let’s start with jumpsuits and rompers because I’m feeling very passionate about them right now. It’s a one-and-done outfit, and there are so many cute options available. I have a really long torso, so I used to think jumpsuits and rompers didn’t work for me, but my attraction to them won in the end. It turns out there are so many that work, and as long as I try them on to make sure they’re wedgie approved, we’re good. Current favorite: DENIM. I linked this Free People one at the end of this post. It’s so comfortable! I may end up cutting the sleeves and rolling them up when we get to boob sweat temps here, but for now the longer sleeves don’t bother me. I wear it with nude clogs to make my legs look longer, but you could totally wear sneakers for a more casual look, or heels to dress it up. There’s a Wrangler denim romper linked at the end as well which I wish I would have seen first–I like the little bit of elastic in the waist.

While we’re on jumpsuits and rompers, this Nordstrom one is another fun one. It’s a nice lightweight fabric but still forgiving. I’ll probably add a belt in the middle instead of the tie.

My main go-to for every day though is a graphic tee + maxi/midi skirt. I love wearing skirts and dresses, and adding the graphic tee keeps it super casual. This skirt is from Target’s Who What Wear line last year, and I wear it all the time.

I love pairing sneakers with skirts lately too, and there are so many cute retro sneakers right now that I have to abstain from clicking.

Another graphic tee/maxi combo with a current Who What Wear skirt (at Target now)…

As far as dresses, I like casual flowy dresses and buy most of mine from Free People because they fit perfectly and they work great for that beachy Florida vibe. This one has a nice heavy gauzy feel; and you can and wad it up, throw it in a suitcase, wear it wrinkled, and it would still work.

Finally, to even out the funky and colorful, I love keeping a classic pair of skinny jeans in rotation and a nice button-up shirt. I wear all my button-up shirts tied in the front because I think it creates a flattering waistline, so I always make sure the shirt is long enough to unbutton the last two buttons and tie it without having it ride up too high.

To complete the spring look, accessories include a panama hat, two different styles of sunglasses and two pairs of earrings–one classic and one fun statement.

And the round-up of all these styles

2 Maxi Skirts
Who What Wear Polka Dot Skirt (the one I’m wearing, under $30!)
Pleated H&M Skirt
Patterned Maxi Skirt
Embroidered Yellow Midi Skirt
Floral Maxi Skirt (with suspenders!)

Graphic Tees
Merci Tee ($12.99 at Target!)
Mama Bird Ringer Tee
Billy Joel Tee
The Beatles Tee
Madewell Retro Sister Ringer Tee
Bando Vacation Tee

Button Down Shirt
Cloth & Stone Classic White (I found mine at Marshalls last year for a fraction of the price)
J.Crew White Linen
J.Crew Mustard Stripe Short Sleeve

Jeans
J.Crew High Rise – These are my current favorite jeans. I look for high rise, button fly and a raw hem in jeans, and these check off all three

Overalls – I’ve tried on so many overalls, and these are my favorite. I like that they’re more fitted in the legs to give it a more tailored look.

Jumpsuits & Rompers
Free People Denim Romper
Wrangler Denim Romper
Red Levi’s Jumpsuit
Floral Jumpsuit
Pink Collared Romper

Retro Tennis Shoes
Retro Nike
Rainbow Boden Sneakers – I get so many compliments every time I wear these. Comfy and super fun!
Gola Rainbow Stripe Sneakers
Madewell Tretorn Sneakers

Big Buckle Birkenstocks – pretty much all I wear when we are up in Michigan

Heeled Nude Clogs – so great for making your legs look longer!

Edgy Booties
Super Edgy Gah! I love these Givenchy knock-offs–which is a good thing because the real ones are $1395
Middle Edgy
A little Edgy

Flowy Dress
Free People Bali Dress – I stitched up the cleavage area so it’s not so low cut. Took me 5 minutes and it lines up perfectly so you can close it as high as you want with a little needle and thread.
Free People Midi Dress – I have this, and it’s so comfy!
Madewell Wrap Dress
Topshop Maxi Dress – would look so cute with red sandals!

Accessories
Black Panama Hat – I am super picky about hats. I want a stiff brim (as opposed to floppy) that isn’t too big and a crown that isn’t too cowboyish. This is my go-to hat, and it’s super affordable.
Gold Aviator Sunglasses – classic rockstar sunglasses
Round Ombre Penny Lane Sunglasses – fun retro vibe
Vivi & Bette Mustard Pom Pom Earrings (I’ve been wearing these with everything lately–adds such an element of fun to any outfit)
Tortoise Hoop Earrings – Simple, classic, goes with everything

Now go forth and enjoy your weekend! HAPPY FRIDAY!

Serious question and why I don’t really own any jumpsuits. How hard are they to pee in? I had one jumpsuit that had a button in the back that I couldn’t really reach and had to have someone help me everytime I wen to the bathroom. Only wore once!

Ha! It’s tricky at first, but I’m so used to wearing them it’s not that big of a deal now. Just probably wouldn’t wear it on an airplane.
