*The sponsors I work with provide fun opportunities to share things we love, and I enjoy these occasions to talk about both products we’ve always used and new things we’ve discovered in a way that fits with how I write and share on this blog–and hopefully feels fun for you to read as well. These partnerships help support our family and the time and work that goes into writing this blog–time and work that, thankfully, I truly enjoy. This partnership was especially fun and easy to support because Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board simply asked, “Want to join our Friday Night Pizza Party?” I mentioned the opportunity to Brett and he smiled. “Seriously? We LOVE Friday night pizza parties. You said yes, right?”
Making pizza at home with our family is one of our favorite things to do, and Friday nights set the perfect tone for a party. The best homemade pizzas include–yep, you got it–Wisconsin Cheese.
Also, Happy Almost Halloween!
For this pizza party, we invited our friends Vinny and Wylie to join us because they are the experts of pizza–Vinny’s family used to run a pizzeria in Brooklyn–and because, well, we like them. I set my standards high for this pizza. I wanted to attempt the Chicago deep dish, something I’ve never done from scratch. I grew up taking the Amtrak into Chicago and never visited without hitting up either Giordano’s, Gino’s or Uno’s.

(from our Chicago visit in 2012)
It was time we recreated this cheesy wonder of the world in our own home.
Deep Dish is serious business though, and you don’t approach it lightly. Our friend Vinny knows pizza like the back of his hand, but he’s an Italian New York boy, so I gave him what he’s good at–sauce, cheese and toppings–and I took over the responsibility of the Chicago deep dish crust. I researched that mother like I was writing a thesis on it, and the recipe I chose turned out to be nothing short of perfection. I followed Sally’s Baking Addiction deep dish crust recipe to a T which uses flour, salt, sugar, yeast, warm water, butter and cornmeal. The secret of a deep dish crust which resembles a pie crust more than a pizza crust is three things: cornmeal, sugar (it’s a little sweeter than regular pizza dough) and laminating butter into the dough.
So I pre-made the deep dish dough, set the table for company and then watched as my friends arrived and took over our kitchen LIKE A BOSS. Friday night just got real.
The dough recipe I followed rolled out beautifully to make two deep dish pizzas. We lined the bottom of two 9-inch tall cake pans, lightly oiled, with the dough and brushed it with an olive oil mixture with fresh garlic and Italian spices.
You can add whatever toppings you’d like to a deep dish pizza. We sauteed red peppers, cooked sausage and added pepperoni.
I thought a good homemade pizza sauce would be pretty complicated but was pleasantly surprised to see how easy it was. Vinny says you don’t need to add much to a good can of crushed tomatoes and not only that you can add it right to the can; don’t dirty another dish. He also says don’t cook pizza sauce because the tomatoes will taste old if you double cook them. We topped off a can of crushed tomatoes with fresh basil and oregano, a heaping tablespoon of sugar (I like a sweeter sauce for deep sauce), a swig of olive oil, and salt and pepper. Stir together and that’s it!
The other secret of deep dish pizza is you reverse the toppings–do not pour sauce directly on crust. It’s CHEESE FIRST. I’m sure Wisconsin Cheese would agree with this life motto–cheese first.
Then toppings.
And finally sauce.
Repeat those layers, fold in the dough that overlaps the pan and then shave some fresh Wisconsin Parmesan on the top. Bake at 500° for around 40 minutes depending on your oven, but keep checking until crust looks golden, cheese is fully melted and consistency is to your liking. Important: let it set for at least 10 minutes.
We made some regular dough for the kids so they could make their own mini pizzas, have fun with the dough and watch Vinny throw it in the air.
The kids loved theirs…
And ours? Sweet Mother of Melted Cheese. Best pizza ever. Even Vinny–the king of pizza–was raving, taking pictures of it, texting it to family.
And now comes Brett’s favorite part. He used to work in a pizza parlor when he was in his 20’s and for years has been raving about the cool pizza cutter he used to use that stretched across the entire diameter of the pizza–talked about it so much that my mom finally found one and gave it to him for Christmas last year. He loves every opportunity to whip it out.
And I love any opportunity to be with friends, eat pizza and enjoy a Friday night together. Success! Mad success.

Yuuuuuuuum. I love pizza so much. I’m a pepperoni kind of girl, but my absolute favorite is one that a local pizza place that closed down used to make. It had alfredo sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, green peppers, and banana peppers.
Wow! My mouth is watering! I’m usually a thinner, soft crust pizza kind of girl but I have never had an authentic deep dish pizza! I have got to try this soon! Yum.
This is the best thing I’ve seen in a long time! Thank you!
Wow, that looks great!!
We love making our own pizza, and the hubs likes to make a wheat/cornmeal crust variation. With fall upon us, I’m looking for wonderful Friday night recipes, and this idea fits the bill!
Cheers,
Caryl
Yum! I love any kind of pizza but this looks fabulous!
My favorite pizza is a style that can only be found locally (as in, my town). It’s called the ‘tavern’; it’s thickness is somewhere between a regular and deep dish, and it has marinara and american cheese on it (among other cheeses I think). It is THE BEST pizza outside of NYC (we’re Upstaters) 😉 and we own it. Although emulated, never duplicated!
I like a thin crust veggie pizza, with mushrooms, olives, peppers and onions.
love me some pepporoni and sausage OR barbeque chicken – YUM
I love me some New York style pepperoni pizza!!!
Some of my friends are “pizza purists” and only enjoy standard cheese and pepperoni for their toppings but I will put anything on pizza.
Pineapple and ham are my favorite but anchovies come in at a close second. I wish more people would give poor old anchovies a chance, they make an amazing topping!
Love deep dish Hawaiian pizza!
I put ricotta cheese, caramelized onions and an assortment of veggies on my pizza. It is always amazing. Pizza is my favorite food so as long as there is sauce and cheese I am good to go!
Love Chicken Alfredo pizza

Margarita pizza is our favorite to make at home!
Sicilian pizza is a favorite at our house.
Straight up cheese pizza – we switch between a cast iron pan pizza and thin crust. Thanks!
I used to make only homemade pizza for pizza night, but I’ve gotten lazy since moving. Maybe this will inspire me to try again!
Love Friday pizza nights!
New York style is my favorite.
My favorite kind of pizza is a veggie and chicken pizza.

We love pizza night! I have never tried Chicago Pan pizza at home, but you’ve inspired me to give it a whirl.
I worked at Connie’s Pizza (another Chicago pizza staple I would recommend) and have never thought to make deep dish at home. Thanks for the idea.
Also, i’m not sure how eager Brett would be for you to write about “whipping it out” but since I don’t know him personally I could be wrong. ????
we do friday night pizza each week and coincidentally did homemade last night as well. not as fancy or yummy looking as yours, though. nice job! my fave is pineapple and canadian bacon.
How timely that I just read a “Pizza is the most addictive food EVER” article this week…
NY style. Sals in Mam’k.
your pizza looked delicious – personally I like a thin crust with cheese and vegetables
LOVE making homemade pizza on the barbecue. Have never attempted homemade deep dish but would LOVE to!
We love grilled pizza. Similarly, the key to the dough is cornmeal.
Oh my goodness, that looks soo delicious!! I love pizza loaded with sausage, peppers, and spinach!Yum!
I can’t resist a deep-dish spinach pizza with lots and lots of cheese!
Super yummy!!
I would like someone to deliver this to my house right this second. YUM! I will make sure my cheese is made in Wisconsin the next time I buy some! : )
If it’s from Pizza Hut, super supreme. If made at home, whatever ingredients we have on hand! Yum!!!
Pineapple and onion, extra sauce!
Uno’s is good, but you missed out if you never had Lou Malnatis!
I’m about to up my game from the usual favorite- english muffin pizza!
Chicken, mushrooms and smoked gouda with white sauce.
I think I need to make this next Friday. Thanks for the inspiration!
My kids and I love pizza day. They put everything they like on their pizza…
I love NY style pizza, which is easy to find living in the south. Also, if you are in Binghamton, NY, you need to try Cortese Pizza. Lately, I have been craving any pizza as long as I can dip it into blue cheese.
I went to college in Chicago and would LOVE to be able to re-create the amazing pizza from Chicago at my home in Michigan!
LOVE Chicago pizza but have never made myself! Will have to try.
I love Chicago style deep dish from BJ’s. Hawaiian is my fave! Perfect balance of salty and sweet!

Deep dish is my favorite pizza to eat and make, especially in my deep dish baking stone!
Yum!
Pizza looks delicious! I’ve never tried making deep dish but my mom always used to make homemade pizza on Friday nights. I always say I should make it more often when I do, because it’s so good!
You make me hungry for pizza!
My favorite favorite pizza is by this local place. They do a honey siracha drizzle and it’s DEVINE! But pizza is pizza and I don’t discriminate 🙂
My favorite pizza is not very exciting – I like plain cheese pizza!
Would love to win. !!! And that looks delicious
Looks delicious!
We do pizza night every Friday! My husband makes the dough and sauce from scratch and our boys pick out the toppings. His BBQ chicken pizza is the best!
I’ve got to say one of my favorite pizzas comes from a local pizza place in my area- it’s Thai-inspired- fresh cucumbers, curry chicken and sweet red chili sauce are some of the delicious ingredients!
we love a good thin crust margarita, but a deep dish sounds delish!
I love a place in manhattan called Company, or CO. It’s the best ever!!!
My favorite type of pizza is Hawaiian with garlic sauce instead of marinara sauce. Oh, and crumbled bacon all over it.. with tomatoes 🙂
Love me some pizza! We love homemade pizza in our house. My favorite is green pepper, onion, black olive, pepperoni, and mushrooms, extra cheese!
We do a lot of homemade pizza around here, but never deep dish. Might be time to up my pizza game!
I love vegetable pizza!
My favorite kind of pizza is olive, artichoke, and pineapple pizza!
That Deep Dish looks AMAZING. Never had Deep Dish since I’ve never left Alabama – but holy moley! I love any kind of pizza – but love making mini-pizzas with canned biscuits & lots of cheese!
We love pizza night. I thought I had a pretty good pizza sauce, but I might have to listen to Vinny and not double cook it!
Um, yum! Thanks for sharing this deep dish pizza and giveaway!
Being a Chicago girl myself, you nailed it with Giordano’s, Gino’s and Uno’s. Thx for the chance to win!
After making pizza at home, my family now won’t eat takeout pizza! Glad to have a new variation on my staple crust recipe.
Sounds like a fun tradition!
I could eat pizza everyday. LOVE it!!
Every. Single. Type!! All around my family’s favorite meal 🙂
My pizza would have lots of cheese, sauce, banana peppers, red onion and cherry tomatoes!
My favorite pizza is olive oil with garlic on the crust (no sauce), artichoke hearts and brie cheese …. we have ‘make your own pizza nights’ often and that is MY go to. The kids stick with traditional red sauce, pepperoni and cheese, some leave out the pepperoni 🙂
I will have to try this dough recipe, sounds like heaven .. and Uno’s I love Uno’s!!
Yum, looks so good! My favorite is either a simple pepperoni pizza or prosciutto, arugula & fig.
My husband is originally from the Latrobe area in Pennsylvania. Every time we go to visit his Grandma we have to stop a little pizza place called Joijoi’s. It’s his all time favorite pizza and it’s square with a sweeter crust, yummy!
Yum!
Oh this is so happening. Soon.
We love to make homemade pizza! Tons of veggies for me.
I like a good beef and mushroom pizza. Simple but yummy every time!
Hot, bubbly & chewy – or deep dish chicago style 🙂
We love Friday Night Pizza Parties! The pizza looks amazing!
My kids (6,4 and 1) love making pizza! We probably have it at least twice a month. We use the America’s Test Kitchen recipe for New York thin crust and it’s delicious. I love your idea of mixing the sauce in the can. Totally going to try that next time!
The pizza looks amazing! Other than going to Chicago, we prefer to make our pizza at home.
I like Grandma pie. Made in Jersey!
I love pizza but have never been able to make it at home…the crust always comes out soggy. But, I will try again.
I’m a purist when it comes to pizza – cheese only!
My favorite pizza is homemade pizza – thin crust. Toppings very each time depending on our mood. Close second is Spinnocoli pizza from Pizzeria Uno on State Street in Madison, WI (but alas we haven’t been in WI in about 20 years). I’ve had Spinnocoli Pizza at other Uno’s but they don’t live up to the Spinnocoli Pizza eaten on State Street.
I love all pizza! I’ve seen recipes to make a deep dish in a cast iron skillet, but this looks even more amazing… like an actual pizza pie! My favorite is super thin, crispy crust with lots of mushrooms and olives on top.
I’d give a lot for a Giordano’s pizza right now!
We lived in Chicago for ten years and love Chicago deep dish! Mushrooms and spinach are my favorite toppings.
My favorite kind of pizza is stuffed spinach or thick crust with all the veggies–mushrooms, green peppers, olives, onions, tomatoes
I love a pizza loaded with everything.
yum!
I love any pizza, but homemade is the best.
That pizza looks amazing! I would love to try it and toss in some sausage and mushrooms.
So fun! My daughter would love doing this!!
We make pizza at home once a week, but have never tried deep dish at home. I’m inspired! I love Hawaiian Pizza!
love the idea of family pizza night. Ready to start planning ours!
That looks delicious! Makes me want pizza for lunch.
My mom recently passed and while going through her belongings yesterday, my siblings and I found her old deep dish pizza pan. It’s older than I am and we all have the best memories of her making us this AMAZING pizza. Even after my older siblings left the house, we would still come together with their spouses and children for pizza nights. Amid all of the sadness yesterday, we stopped to just talk and laugh about all of those good memories with that pan and the hundreds of pizzas it held.
Afterwards, we decided to have ‘joint custody’ of the pan and pass it between the three of us. We’re even planning to start up those pizza nights again, with all three of our families coming together. It’s amazing how something so simple as a pan and a pizza has made us feel so much better during this time.
And thank you for sharing your night (and the giveaway). It makes me happy to think of other families making such wonderful memories.
Awesome! Would love to win!
mmmm, deep dish.
I tend to be so simple with my pizzas; I prefer a thick crust, sauce, and cheese … you just can’t beat that unless it is double cheese! A local place used to serve pizza that included ricotta on it and that was my obsession for years but it’s not a common topping option at a lot of places, oddly enough. If you have the chance, try it.
The favorite pizza at our house is Pizza Genovese… pesto, eggplant, goat cheese & arugula! But all pizzas are welcome!
Nothing like a family pizza party where the kids get to throw their dough and make their own. It is so fun in our house, plus than I get to make my favorite, veggie with pineapple.
Being from Illinois I love me some Chicago style pizza !!!
After trying Chicago deep dish over a decade ago, I decided THAT was the way to eat pizza. But then just this spring my husband and I were in NYC for our 15th anniversary and WOW! The New York style slice at Majestic Pizza was phenomenal. I can’t choose! 🙂 However, I would say my favorite toppings are either a veggie pizza or bacon and onion. 🙂
This looks great! I love pizza nights!
Great post… can’t wait to try the recipe… whether I win or not! 🙂
I like NY style pizza best, but I haven’t met a pizza I didn’t like!
Great inspiration! I need to try this. I still love a simple Hawaiian pizza: ham and pineapple
Making pizza at home is one of our favorite weekly traditions, since our 3 year old son, James can help! Veggies and extra cheese are our go-to toppings.
YUM! Love Gino’s!
We love making pizza and I love my wide pizza slicer like Brett’s. I have never made deep dish though and want to try!
This looks amazing!
When our boys lived at home, we always had Pizza Night each Friday. I think we all looked forward to that tradition. We all loved vegetable pizza.
Two favorites: Spinach Alfredo (so yum!) and Meat Lover’s (load ’em up!)
We suspect our youngest may have a dairy allergy and we have testing set-up next month so I need to get on this before our worst fears are concerned and we start having a major cheese shortage in our home.
That pizza cutter is amazing! Love Pepperoni. Can’t beat a classic.
We love getting together with friends & taking turns cooking, that we decided to build houses next door to one another 🙂
We love pizza! Going to have to attempt some deep dish!
You had me at “free pizza”!
Also, that has to be some of the best homemade pizza I’ve ever seen. None of my homemade pizzas come out looking nearly that good… in fact they usually look pretty disastrous (but they always taste alright)!
I have been on a perpetual quest to find the best pizza in every town I’ve lived in since leaving Chicago in the 80’s. Nothing compares with the real thing.
I love ALL pizza. Yum!
Does it get better than pizza?
Can’t wait to try this dough recipe for a deep dish pizza. My kids will probably hate the chunky tomato sauce, but I will love it!
YUM!!!!!
Fun giveaway
I’m from Connecticut so we’re fans of a good thing crust pizza, but that deep dish looks amazing!
I’ve never tried deep dish but let me tell you when I try the other kind and roll it out (especially my Blue Apron meals that have pizza), its quite comical. The two of us stretch the dough out in the rectangular pan and I take wooden clothespins and pin the dough to the pan rim all around so I can at least get the toppings on. Then I take the pins off and throw it in the oven as quickly as I can.
We love pizza nights but I’ve never had a deep dish pizza! We usually order out.
I love pepperoni with no tomato chunks in the sauce!
Pizza is our favorite…Would love to try homemade. I get tired of always going out – a pizza party is exactly what our family needs right now.
I would have to say that my favorite is mushroom and cheese
I love Chicago-style pizza as well 🙂 I’ve never considered making my own… until now!
My family loves making pizza at home. I buy the balls of dough and then we get creative and try all sorts of new things. Our latest favorite is alfredo chicken pizza! Yummy!!
I love deep dish pizza. I found the trick of corn meal years ago and it makes the best pizza. I used the recipe that came with my bread maker (french bread), then added the corn meal at the end.
It was so good and filling. My kids nicked named it “heartburn pizza”. Thier seal approval.
would love to be included in the giveaway.
We make pizza once a week at least. I love artichokes on pizza!
