There is an unspoken point system in our home, a scoreboard clearly divided with Brett’s name on one side, mine on the other, and a slew of tally marks under each. Our imaginary records keep track of random things–who our kids prefer, whose behaviors they’re adopting, who they look like–and the final score gives us nothing but a victorious grin and the satisfaction of “I won.” It’s harmless, really–a fun spousal competition that grants us a little leverage. Like “Move over, she likes my pancakes better.”
Brett won a lot of points for the first couple years of Lainey’s life because we heard a lot of “Oh, she looks like her daddy” followed of course by his cavalier smile and a mark on his side of the scoreboard. But this year, things have shifted. I brought home the following photos from Michigan last week–that’s me around Lainey’s age–and as I handed them to Brett, I timed my humble response appropriately. Five seconds of watching his wide-eyed affirmation that yes, that’s Lainey with brown hair–and then…”Booyah.” One point for me, thank you.

Mom, the ribbon under the collar? Brilliant. Well done.
I had some catching up to do though as Brett’s been shamelessly raking in points lately. Like when he overheard Lainey asking me last week “Mommy, why do you always leave the car so messy?” And then he hoarded a point when he whooped a “Yeah, Daddy’s Girl!” after she said Isle of Capri is her favorite place, which is just unfair because it’s everyone’s favorite place.
But that’s fine. You wanna play that way? I can play. I now get a point for every time Nella wants me when she’s hungry which is, yes, totally biased because Brett has no boobs, but we’re playing dirty now. If he can count the lame truth that Lainey once pointed to a Coors Light logo and said “Daddy’s beer” as a point for him, then certainly I’m claiming one for the fact that Nella always reaches for the yellow sidewalk chalk first…and yellow’s my favorite color.
Lainey tries on six things at once and throws the five discarded outfits into haphazard piles on her bedroom floor–clearly a victory for me, but Nella likes to eat slowly, enjoying each bite and taking breaks in between them–an undeniable point for Brett.
Then there’s things we share. Our babies like the beach, the hot sun and the thrill of fearlessly facing gulf waves.
They are both carefree. They love being home. And recently, after Lainey drew a picture and proudly presented it to me with, “It’s a keepsake, Mama. Save it forever,” I knew it was a point for both of us. Because we’re both sentimental savers, evident by boxes full of meaningful tokens from our past lined up under our bed.
The thing is, it is wonderfully satisfying to see yourself in your kids whether it’s your crooked smile or the way you like peanut butter and honey on toast. As our girls slowly grow out of footy pajamas, sippy cups and choosing their favorite colors based on ours, I know we will watch them chisel their own unique identities. They’ll gradually stray from things that make them so much like us and pride themselves on the things that make them different. And we will applaud them.
We’ll still keep score though the tallies may be few and far between, and we will swoon with pride when they resemble us, choose us, mimic us, follow us. But we will celebrate them regardless.
Because, in the end, there’s still a champion.
It’s unanimous. We won.

Red Sunset, post storm–Vanderbilt Beach, Thursday night

Love it all!!! I think about this type thing a lot…she is him, she is me, she is herself…all wrapped up in one beautiful package (well, 2 of them since I have 2 girls:) Happy Weekend! love the new header
Gorgeous. I feel the same way!
I mean “we” have two girls! ha:)
The red sunset is amazing! Haven’t seen anything quite like that one.
My husband and I do a friendly point system too…but ours is more based on if our kid is well behaved under our exclusive care. Like if he does something pretty awesome…obviously that is a direct reflection of how amazing I am. So, it would be a point for me 😉 hehe
Such a beautiful way to look at all the things you love 🙂
Beautiful post and pictures!
how sweet! I love that you guys do this all in fuN! your girls are both so beautiful and so are you and your husband! LOVE your blog so VERY MUCH! it’s my daily dose of “HAPPY”!!!

p.s. I saw this little cutie and I wanted to adopt her and I thought of you and how maybe you could help get the word out for people to donate to make sure she finds a forever family! not sure if you can do that on your blog or not?!
isn’t she a doll???!
tara
Within the first dozen comments – point for ME!!! hahaha, just kidding 😉
Oh, I love it! It’s so true. We do that too. We compare them to us and to each other and revel in the ways that we’re all the same and praise each little unique that seemingly came from nowhere…something all their own. I love watching them grow.
Amazing post 🙂
Have a wonderful weekend!
While I always love the pictures of your girls (and you were a cutie, too), that last photo is gorgeous. Something we never see here on the left coast.
http://itiswhatitisorisit.net/
So who gets the point for eating sand?!
We totally do the same thing….and I am currently “losing”, but that is ok since you have clarified I can play dirty. It is on!!! Going to the gulf for the first time next weekend, Corpus Christi, and for this California girl, I am ecstatic to share it with my kids. Can’t wait to see a sunset….
OK..the picture of Nella with the sand in her mouth (unless it was a real sugary donut) would make alot of the mother’s I know have a heart attack. I, for some badass reason, love that she eats sand & dirt & leaves & chalk & she’s still alive..hell, thriving. I really wish everyone would lighten up where the kids are concerned & just let them be…they know how to have a great time. Mushing cool mud through their fingers, getting tickled by worms, letting melting ice cream drip down their chins & wiping their sticky little hands on pristine outfits. Oh, the fun they are having!
Love Love Love it! We do this too. Of course, no matter what my hubby says I am always winning!!
Love the red sunset. 🙂 Have a good weekend.
I love the way our kiddos resemble me one day and Dad the next – in looks and in actions. Amazing thing to watch evolve. Love the red sunset. Have a fun weekend. xo
your scorecard is SO much sweeter than the one G and i share. ours is a little Edith and Archie Bunker and the moment. who did the laundry v. who put it away. who cleaned the bathroom v. who wiped down the toilet seats before the in-laws came over for dinner. who fixed dinner v. who cleared dishes, with the tie breaker point going to who cleaned the kitchen. this demands a rematch over who emptied the dishwasher, which always leads to another nail-biting conclusion of who put the dishes into the dishwasher to begin with.
all of it is a cycle, of course, and like your scorecard, even this Edith and Archie find they’re equally matched in points on both sides. and in the end, that’s when you know you’ve chosen the perfect mate. and that’s the point we all can strike long and lean on our own scorecard.
here’s to high batting averages, match points, birdies, hole-in-ones, 3-pointers at the buzzer, and kickass victory laps.
big love, groovy girl.
That sunset is amazing!!
Well done 🙂
Love it. Laughed out loud as I read it. Honestly, your blog is so inspiring. I love it. And I would love to see you on TV! Fingers crossed that your show idea works out!
You both have won with those beautiful baby girls. Nellas hairlooks so pretty , its getting so long !
Im off to celebrate my sons 2nd birthday , thats a victory !!!
cant wait for laineys party.
love and blessings the doughtys
Love the new header, with the splash of color!
Fun little giveaway on my blog…perfect for anyone!
What a sweet post. Your girls are so adorable!
I love the photo of Nella eating sand :). It is a good follow up to your “instincts” article! There are so many books and research and advice out there. But, if it took books and research, and advice to successfully love and raise a child, so many of us wouldn’t be here today!
WOW, what a sunset – I’ve never seen anything like it! Gorgeous.
Hehe, I like the score keeping, so much fun 🙂
Our boy looks so much like his father I guess I can never keep up with the number of people who has pointed that out, the passed 5-6 years…
Lovely photos with fab colours, love them!
Thanks!
I think it’s time to tell you just how much I enjoy your blog. When it shows up in my Google Reader I get so excited and can’t wait to read what you have written. I love the emotion, the simple joy, the writing style, the photographs, everything. Thanks for being so open and honest and for inspiring me to enjoy the small things!
Love this!! Our kiddos are so much of us, but so much of themselves also. I love seeing how they mimic us and can’t wait for the swift change that I’m sure will come once they start to find themselves! On a side note, I love how carefree you are about giving your kids messy things to eat, I’ve seen it in past posts as well. I need to learn to be more like that, but all I can think about is the laundry and mess that I’m going to have to clean up (my mom can clearly put a mark under her name for that one)!!
Very, very sweet.
What a cute idea, keeping tallies! I would totally lose because my son looks like his dad and my dad. He has darker skin than me and brown eyes, but dude… it’s early too. He’s only 7 months 🙂 What a sweet post! & I’m dying to visit Isles of Capri, it seems so idyllic! xx
Haha! That picture of Nella eating the sand is, hands down, my favorite pic of her yet! What a stinkin’ cutie! My now 6 year old daughter did that every time we went to the beach when she was a baby.
And I actually thought Lainey looked like you before you posted the pics of yourself as a little girl!
PS-Stayed up way too late last night reading my Mamarazzi book! LOVE IT! Thanks for such a great recommendation!
So cute Kellie. I giggled the whole time reading this post. I can totally see this unfolding in front of me even though I don’t know you and Brett in person!! Your girls are adorable.
p.s my husbands name is Bret too, but only with 1 T,and he proudly tells everyone that 🙂
Nothing better than seeing a little of yourself in your babies. I secretly keep a tally in my head- and I am SO winning. Oh, and the pic of Nella eating sand…my mom always said “a little dirt won’t hurt” and I agree.
First of all, beautiful! Secondly, Nella eating sand- gotta love finding sand in the diapers days after going to the beach 🙂
That sounds just like me and my husband. Our first daughter is undeniably just like him, and he’s always scooping up the points on her account. Even using it against me sometimes. Like if she’s throwing a fit he’ll say “Ohh, now you’re acting like your mom.” Point for him..again. But our second daughter is mommies girl, prefering me over anyone. And yes, I also use the whole she wants me when she’s hungry to score points. Hey, you gotta win somehow!
PS: How are you feeling? Did your anti-sickness chants work?
Oh I so love you and your family. This is my favorite post ever!!!!
The picture of you when you were little was a huge flashback for me! I had that bag in the background; blue with primary color stripes. In my kindergarten picture I wore a blue collard shirt like that, with a blue corduroy jumper with a BLUE ribbon under the collar.
We,too, have that point system. Everyone knows my daughter has my eyes, but it still gets me when a random person says she has her father’s 😛
Awesome – love it 🙂 Also love the pics, esp Nella eating sand – we are taking our little guy to the beach at the end of May, he will be 13mo, and it will be his first trip to the beach!! CAN’T WAIT 🙂
Lovely, lovely shots !!!
It is amazing how being a mum changes our lives. Thanks for sharing your experiences !!! … ^___^
Oh my goodness, I laughed so hard about the “Daddy’s beer” line. When we redid our kitchen, my daughter loved to show off the details to visitors and would proudly open the cabinet door that housed the trash and the recycling bins and exclaim loudly while pointing to the recyling, “That’s for DADDY’S BEER!”
Thanks for the chuckle on this fine morning. Now go score some points!! =)
the red sunset makes me swoon. i cannot imagine a storm on the ocean.. must have been amazing.
So glad to know me and my husband aren’t the only ones that keep a score. Though he’d never admit it. ;o)
That was a beautiful post today. It brought a tear of truth to my eyes. It is sad that they grow up and leave but it is also the best gift they can give us as parents when they achieve success, and start their own life and identity. I love to watch them make their own choices, it makes me so proud. Thanks!
Kelle, we are totally score keepers too. Harmless fun, but I’ll be damned if I don’t like being ahead of the game. I also need to add that one of the first things I noticed in that picture of you as a 4 year old…is that fabulous Pepsi bag. All of those bags. I need them! After I noticed your striking resemblance to your oldest pretty girl of course. 🙂
My husband and I do this all the time as well, “keep score”. 🙂 I love what you wrote about it all. Lovely.
beautiful post and so funny but what i really need to talk about?? the killer 80s backpacks and handbags. fantastico. i had the bows at the neck as well, you were the height of fashion.
Love it all! “Daddy beer” – too funny. You were such a cute little girl; no wonder you grew up to be such a beautiful woman~ Love from the Blog Mama~
Ha. My husband and I do similar things, too. Our daughter throws major tantrums like my husband did when he was little. So he gets one major point for that, but I love saying that “she didn’t get it from me!” (I was a pouter which is much quieter, and a whole less embarrassing out in public!)
Oh, and yes, Lainey looks like you WAY more than Brett! 🙂
We also do the ‘thats from you’ when its something not so great – love the tally count, its a fun spousal game!
All of your posts are beautiful but this one is just breath-taking (the pictures AND the writing). I can’t wait to be a mom 🙂
So sweet. I’m pretty sure my parents did the same thing when we were growing up 🙂
I am in LOVE with this post. I just read it to my husband (who my daughter looks like) and my mom (who I look nothing like.)
I don’t think you BOTH won, I think you ALL won. 🙂
well, THAT’S funny because I always thought Lainey looked exactly like you…but after seeing you as a little girl in the pictures, I think she looks a lot like her daddy-lol!
My husband and I do the same thing and now with number 2 on the way we can’t wait to play the fun “game” all over again! Oh and Lainey is for sure a blonde headed mini you, so cute! Love this post, but then again I love all of them! Have a great weekend with your beautiful little family!
Oh, I gotta tell you – I’m so excited…!!!
I’ll never forget your post on dancing in the rain when it rains unexpectedly, so…. tonight I got my chance!
I was out jogging 8 PM in the rain. It had started suddenly but I didn’t let that discourage me.
After jogging I realized that I have to dance, right in front of our house.
Marvellous!
I’ll do it again this summer and drag The Boy with me <3
Thanks again and again and again for being wonderful Kelle with all that apetite for life 🙂
Have a grand saturday!
just bumped into another mama at the park (Coronado) who had a huge camera slung around her neck and I had to ask, “Do you know Kelle Hampton?” wouldn’t you know…! So exciting to see others touched in the way I have been! 🙂 that last picture is amazing! 🙂 Love this whole post!
Love the new header! I do the same – every time someone say on of the kids looks like me or him etc. So funny – I think he is winning based on the amount of “wow he looks like his daddy” comments we get now about our 7 week old baby boy. Of course the ones from his mom don’t count -every grandbaby looks just like them even when they don’t 🙂 Ha ha.
I love the red sunset picture – beautiful.
Awwww- GREAT post. It brings tears to my eyes:).
Have a lovely weekend!!
xoxo,
Blair
MMMmuah! Love it, this was a fabulous post fo rme to read today!
Thank you….we experience the EXACT same thing in our home!
Love to you and Happy Weekend!
Leona~
I love all the photos!
Beautiful.
Precious…I’ve always thought Lainey looked like a blond version of you! Your girls are LOVELY!
So true, “we won”! Love that! I also love Lainey’s swimsuit – as green is my fav color!!
Amazing sunset and amazing white shirt with red ribbon tie – I had the same one and it was awesome. ;0)
The shot of Nella eating sand is simple precious! I love that you captured it in a photo. I envy the lovely weather that south Florida brings. I am just sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for our own spring to arrive. (It might be here today…dang the Pacific Northwest) Anyhow, have a great weekend!
This just confirms that my little family and your little family would be fast friends… Coors Light is my beer of choice also. Heh.
haha, we do the same thing.
I watched that sunset from Wiggins Beach!! Wish I had gone to Vanderbilt but I try changing it up now and then…
Lainey does look just like you with blone hair! Cute pics 🙂
oooh thank you for that last picture. so eeirly perfect. i think all babies look like their daddy. thank heavens mine switched over to my side too. well at least one:)
I love your little competition – a little competition never hurt anyone:0) Is that Nella eating sand? Fun times!
What a great and well-written post! I love it!
Beautiful girls! Love that all. I can so see my hubby in all three of our kids, in different ways. The little one looks like him, the middle one has athletic abilities (that are SO not mine!) and the oldest shares his love of airplanes. I see me in my oldest’s looks, and all of their sense of humor…. Thanks for sharing it all. You have a gift for words.
Oh my. So beautiful. I love these thoughts so much. 🙂 And the conclusion. And the red sunset. =) And the new header.
This must be one of the best parts of being a parent, watching you and Brett blend in Lainey and Nella, and then the surprises of what their individual character will be.
I’ve been thinking of your mothers day babble post all week. How I wish I could say the same, but my mother is the complete opposite, she loves very conditionally and judgmentally, and always seeks praise for her role as our mother.
Most of the time I get over it, I mean she’s not abusive, and she thinks she as our mother has a right to treat us the way she does. But I have others in my life who love me unconditionally. But there is a sadness around mothers day when you hear about other mother/ daughter relationships and realising what I miss out on.
Your mom sounds lovely, and how proud you must be of her legacy in you.
That’s gorgeous but it made me sad.
I am the opposite: I keep noticing all of my very worst traits reflected in my daughter & it makes me so upset. I wish I could be more patient: I see her start to throw a tantrum as soon as she has difficulty doing something. I wish I could stop yelling at her & reason with her instead: I see her yelling at the cat.
Maybe you never do these things. Maybe you are able to be more glass half full about it. I’m sure with my 3 years of basically full-time mothering I must have passed on some good traits too…
“It’s a keepsake Mama. Save it forever.” Swoon.
What a beautiful and honest post. Love it and your great photography.
Really wonderful post, thank you for sharing. As a fellow mother of two beautiful girls I know what you mean … we win every second of every day, don’t we? Sigh … such lucky mama’s we are!
Girl, you must be in my head. I am always looking at my boys and seeing everything they are that is from someone else. Grandpa’s hands. Daddy’ feet. Mommy’s dimples. Brother’s nose. You get it…
And I have always thought Lainey looks just like you, but with blonde hair. And those pics confirm it. I think I have seen pics on your site of her holding her mouth just like that second picture of you.
Thanks for sharing this. So glad someone else spends their time thinking about the things I think about. 🙂
And that little Nella eating sand….. she is just the greatest! Love it! She makes my day!
truth be told, I’ve always thought lainey was your mini-me. Those pics just prove that you do in fact get a talley for that. Cute post. Love the point syste!
So I just “discovered” your blog. It is beautiful in every way. It makes me wish I knew you in person.
Beautiful!
Brooke Annessa
http://www.theannessafamily.blogspot.com
Holy cow…that sunset is breathtaking…it looks like a beach ball being thrown up in the sky. Sweet post! I never give my husband credit of our girls looking like him, because clearly they are my clones! : )
The ribbon under the collar shirt? Vintage 80s! My mom had me rockin’ the ribbon, too. And knickers with striped stockings. Oh, and can’t forget legwarmers!
Great post, as always.
Ok, I’ll admit, the last words: “We won” brought tears to my eyes. You are amazing & I am thankful to you for sharing your beautiful family with me!
I know it is not just me, but I am speaking for myself!
Love it!!
OK, so Nella baby grubbin’ on some sand…gotta be his side, right? gorgeous photos, as always.
<3 this post!!! My heart swells when strangers tell me my daughter looks like me because I see her daddy in every inch of her. Either way I’m just happy she’s mine (ours!).
What a sweet post! I couldn’t help but to smile at the photo of Nella eating the sand! Too cute!
Love this post! Does not surprise me in the least that your favorite color is yellow!
Nella, don’t eat the sand.
Oh, you’ve got me all tearing up again. My boy is so much like his dad in so many ways – talkative, impressed with himself (in a good way:), funny, and high energy. And yet he’s also so like me – independent, spirited, musical, and connects easily with people. Everyone says he looks like my hubs since I have dark hair and light eyes and he has light hair and dark eyes like his dad’s. BUT, my baby photos and his? So similar – just different color eyes. And he looks absolutely nothing like his dad’s baby photos. So there. It’s ok though… Ryan can have the “he looks just like you” comments… but we both know he really looks like me. 🙂 Strange how at 15 months this is so meaningful to us, and yet, you’re right… there will come a day when we celebrate his differences far more than we do our similarities. What a sad and beautiful joy in watching them grow out of us (in a sense) and into themselves.
Love the shot of little Nella crunching away on sand. Priceless!
It’s so true, everything you said! My three babies came to us through the 1970’s, so they are far from babies now, but I clearly remember thinking that one was like me, one was like him (mostly, of course), and the third was…just herself. Now…all of the identifications we made long ago have completely reversed, even the third one…SHE is me on steroids…better, smarter, more diplomatic, and I think, a better mom than I was…and that is a trip, because I thought I was pretty darn good.
I’ve always wondered, by the way, whether you had blonde hair as a child, because I see you in every picture of Lainey.
I can remember when my husband would say about our first child(our girl) why does she always want you? My dad said don’t worry it all evens out in the end. But I would smile and relish in it. Then the pendalum would swing, bitter sweet. Dad was right. She is 12 now God love her! It’s still fun to snicker about it though when they choose you.
Loved this post 🙂 It reminds me of something my grandma says…”Babies always look like their father because God knows a mother will love their child no matter who they look like.”
Our kids mostly favor my husband in the looks department but that’s ok. He was raised in a foster home and I know he spent most of his life looking into the eyes of grown ups he looked nothing like. He wears a proud smile when someone says one of our kids looks like him. And of course the kids, especially our boys think that’s pretty cool since they want to be just like him in every way. It’s really sweet 🙂
Have a great Sunday, friend.
XOXO,
Angie from Ohio
P.S. I loved the pictures of you!! SO cute 🙂
I giggled through this whole post – LOVE it 🙂 Although I’ll admit when our daughter does something ridiculously silly my husband and I usually look at each other and just say, “She gets that from you.”
ROFL!!! LOVE IT!
AWESOME! We don’t keep points at our house, but we get to do the “dance”!! Love it!
Absolutely brillant post!
I have recently found your blog. I am a special education teacher and am learning from your insight!
Funnily enough I have been noticing how much Lainey is looking more and more like you lately. There are a couple of shots in the last post where she looks like a blond version of you. I love the pictures of your girls. Such cutie pies.
Natasha. x
Love this post….
LAINEY LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE YOU!!! 🙂
I laughed when I read about Lainey saying “daddy’s beer” haha!
Everyone needs a little friendly competition, am I right? 🙂 Enjoyed this post!
I loved this post……so fun and Lainey is totally a blonde YOU!! And the profile picture of Nella eating her ice-cream…..her eyes, THOSE EYES!!
And I love knowing most every detail of my kids’ little bodies and personalities, too.
Hahahaha! “Boobs”…..such a funny word!
:)Kelly
I love that parenting game… In MY head, I almost always “win” 😉
LOVE the photo of Nella eating the sand. LOVE.
Precious! Love Nella eating the ice cream cone!! You go big girl!!! Lainey is really a little girl…no more baby left there. Can’t wait to see her bday party post!! Happy Weekend!
Ha! I get a tally because Kelle Hampton eats PB & honey toast and that’s what I have almost every morning (…and sometimes night). We call it “Bit ‘O Honey Toast.
I love your girls, your writing, your pictures, and your creativity!! I also love the fact that you are still breast feeding! So many mothers don’t try or give up, but it is the most amazing connection! Keep it up!
My girlfriend Karen just told me today to write on the back of Alex’s drawings A) her age and B) what she was drew/painted/etc. Karen recently went through scores of boxes and discovered that she couldn’t place the age or the child or what they were creating; and that alone made her so very sad.
Point noted starting today.
Love seeing reflections of you in Lainey. So cool. And yes, you both win big time.
-Jennifer from Annapolis
Glad I’m not the only one whose daughter eats buckets full of sand.
Commenting on the picture of Nella eating sand: For the record, I used to eat it too. 🙂
Kelle, I have read your blog for awhile and when I read this article in the Dallas Morning News, I thought you might want to read it! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! I adore your blog and love reading about your sweet girls!! Anyways, hope you enjoy!
http://www.dallasnews.com/news/community-news/dallas/headlines/20110515-east-dallas-couple-with-down-syndrome-discovers-joys-challenges-of-marriage.ece
loved this post!
i must admit, as i read the first sentence, i thought you were going to talk about keeping score, like, who-does-more—oh, right, that’s what leeor and i do (;
i like your version of keeping score! we do it too, but it feels more subtle; like it’s so obvious that avi looks more like me and lilit like her daddy, but upon closer exam, they both have bits of the less dominantly featured parent in there, too, you know? and i love the mix the best.
love the summer header. can’t wait to hear about how your girl enters age 4!
Oh kelle, I have been away from a computer for a while and the first thing I do is upload photos, videos of my own little one and loved ones and then i do a little facebooking to post more pictures and the last thing that is has now become a ritual is putting in ‘Enjoying the Small Things’ the search bar. I’ve been so far away that I was suprised how Nella has grown as well Lainey. Earlier, someone I was in touch with just had a miscarriage and it’s so clear how precious time is and how precious our little ones are.
I’m glad to be ending my night with wonderful posts. Thank you Kelle
-Victoria
Gorgeous childhood photos of you Kelle!
I love your blog. This has to be one of the BEST posts so far. Perfectly executed. Like the triple decker chocolate cake with little curls of impossibly thin chocolate on top. Awesome.
Love this…and so true. Our baby boy undeniably looks just like my husband, but personality? I won that point hands down.
Thanks for putting things in my heart into words.
I’m in tears…. at work. My husband and I just had this discussion last week over a carton of ice cream. I love chocolate, he only eats vanilla. I came home with a carton of neapolitan from a grocery trip with my son and got a “what is this” from my husband as all three of us race to put away the groceries (its one of our little games). My almost 3 year old likes “pink” and he spotted it first at the store and explained to his daddy that “brown is for mommy, white is for you and pink is for me”. He was so excited to have his own little section sandwiched between our likes. We all win!
Kelle!
Did you see that you were one of the favorite Mommy bloggers on Studio 5? Hooray!
http://studio5.ksl.com/index.php?nid=71&sid=15479996
Love it! You did both win! I have constantly heard how our first is a do over of her daddy. And now they have started with the 2nd love of my life too. “She is just a little billy”. Well no….they cant both be total redo’s of daddy! Maybe I need to pull out my baby pictures huh?
BTW, we have that same green bathing suit for our big girl. Love it!
Just so you know…. I’ve always thought she looks like her mama!
I’m so glad Lindsey isn’t the only kid eating sand – and that before you wiped it away from Nella you stopped to take a picture. I also got giddy when I saw Lainey’s bathing suit – target? I’m telling you it’s so silly how excited I get when I see our girls wearing the same clothes. Actually – when I see any kid wearing the same clothes as mine. Even when it’s clothes my kids wore that I passed on to a friend. It’s like the outfit itself becomes a celebrity when someone posts a picture of their kid wearing it. I digress. Great post. Happy Monday.
Nicely said! There’s nothing wrong with a bit of friendly competition 😉
Oh, good googly, I love this post! Glad to know we aren’t the only ones playing the “He’s so me/He’s so you” Game 🙂
I started off already lagging behind, as my son AND my husband have wieners, but with the small dude’s love of busting a funky dance move and ability to eat incredible amounts of macaroni, I’m clearly catching up 🙂
we have this same “argument” … people are constantly saying that the kids look like one of us or the other … but seriously? we could have totally passed as siblings when we were younger. so. there.
gah.
plus also … i always say they get their best traits from me. especially when he isn’t there to roll his eyes.
easygoing? me.
happy? me.
crabbies? him.
smiles? me.
blonde hair? both.
gigantic tonsils? him.
Aw, I like that! 🙂
I love this post!!!
Your children are just delightful.
Beautiful post!
Oh, no! That sand shot! A mouthful of sand. I can’t get over it.
Love it. And hey, what’s wrong with a little friendly competition?
That’s funny though, the way you guys do that. It’s cute. But It think you’re both winners. You have two beautiful daughters. I think that qualifies for the blue ribbon.
It is so beautiful to see ourselves reflected in our children…like a mirror thast helps us see more brightly 🙂
Careful what you wish for… My brother and I have played the “who’s the best/favorite kid” for years. I win because I have the first grandchild. He wins because he has the only granddaughter. I win because I call Mom at least once every 2-3 days, plus email. He wins because he lives 1600 miles closer.
We told Mom about it a few years ago and she thought it was the funniest thing ever. Now she coaches us – “This would give you more points than your brother.” LOL
Yeah hey, I’d say everybody wins.
I can’t wait to have my own little. I have dreams about it. I can’t wait, I can’t wait, I can’t wait!
Until then, more photos of yours, please!

Yes, you won! Eventually when our girls are teens we’ll look back and start tallying points for the other person. 🙂
Is Brett crazy?! (jk, lol) I have always thought that Lainey looks exactly like you! (oh, and I should know because I’ve been reading your blog for a whole year and a half now. lololol)
I enjoy your blog so much!

Kelle–
The one of you in the hat… I swear I have that same dress and I wore it on my 5th birthday, although it can’t be the EXACT same dress because my mom made it for me to wear to my own party! Gotta love the fashions of those times!
Loved this post! And yes, she really is starting to look like you! Love it!
Happy Birthday to Lainey!
Love,
Angela
I love this post. It should be a children’s book. Thank you, once again, for letting us have a window into your life. I truly love reading your blog. 🙂

I love the pencil in your hand in you childhood photo – you were starting early!! Yellow is my favorite color too. Wanted to tell you that my son, Mark(age 3) is smitten with your Nella. He smiles and giggles and laughs everytime he sees her picture – it’s so cute. Have a wonderful day – thanks for helping me to enjoy the small things especially that extra chromosome. Blessings – Maureen
It’s so true, there are so many times where I see myself in my little boy and think, “I totally understand dude.” I love those moments.
The picture of Nella eating sand cracks me up, my son did that more times that I can even remember when he was around that age. That is one thing I’ll never understand! 🙂
Happy Birthday, dear Lainey!
Love,
Kathleen (and Jack!) in Chicago
Kelle you have made me laugh, have chills and a few tears well up as I read this post! I LOVE it and can totally relate to it. And the pictures, love them, as always! Your girls are SO precious! I often feel like I see my own two girls as I look at yours…sister-hood, it is such an amazing wonderful thing!
What a beautiful post!
I’m new to your blog. I love it. All of it. Your beautiful prose reminds me why I love being a mother when sometimes I need reminding. Your photos make me want to capture every moment, and run out and buy a DSLR camera 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration.
Oh! And I meant to say… in the first pic of her after her newborn photos she looks just like a young Julia Roberts. Beautiful!
