Rain

February 12, 2011 By Kelle

In the sun, I move quickly. Energized by its warmth and promise of outdoor activities, I sense the needle of my capability monitor creeping upward, and I often misjudge where it stops, convincing myself that an extra dose of Vitamin D means Do More. On a hot day we change our clothes once, twice, maybe three times, trading t-shirts for tank tops, tank tops for bathing suits, bathing suits for t-shirts. My mind reels erratically–as it has instinctively done since I was young–thinking of all the things we can do. We can run in the sprinkler. We can walk to the lake. We can trace our bodies with sidewalk chalk. And maybe we can do them all at the same time, like one of those one-man bands, blowing a harmonica, beating his drum and banging his cymbals all at once. I like that the sun is a good friend where we live–that it motivates and empowers me.

But–yes, but–the see-saw must shift its balance from time to time and, for this reason, I crave the calm that a good snow day brings. I miss the way my mind and body settled when, waking up to the swirl and whirl of a good blizzard, I knew there was nothing I could do but relax. Lainey loves to play storm. “Let’s pretend a storm is coming,” she says, and we run under the coffee table, covering ourselves with blankets, mimicking the sound of whistling wind and crowding our bodies closer. Her eyes get big and I, in turn, pretend to get excited. And there’s something…I don’t know…cozy about it all.

I say this not to complain about our bare feet and hatless heads in February, but to preface the good welcome of yesterday’s rain. An entire day of gray skies, slick reflective pavement and the calming hum of steady rain, whispering Do Less.

We did less. And it was good.

…and our only Do Less disclaimer was that we baked. A tiny kid-sized cherry pie. We left the dirty dishes though…to abide by the whole Do Less rules, of course.

My mom always used the leftover pie crust to roll out, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and bake 15 minutes for cinnamon crust…divinity with a cold glass of milk, I must say.

And, in keeping with the coziness of a good rain post, our new sponsor, Blanket My Baby, has an incredible collection of baby blankets and bedding to choose from. Lainey has always had her favorite puppy blanket, and I’ve been looking for a small one to become Nella’s favorite. We may have it here with her new Lovey Blanket. (look under handmade blankets for super cute prints for boys too!) Use Coupon Code “ENJOY10” for 10% off your entire order.

It’s raining again this morning, and there’s an old movie with thick British accents calling my name. A Do Less weekend.

I love “do less” weekends! Instead of all your rain, we had a ton of snow! So we all cuddled up, stayed in our p.j.’s all day and made a big pot of soup! Movies on the screen were playing while we slept, played games and watched!

kelle- my favorite part of pie has ALWAYS been that left over crust, too. my mom makes it the same way w/ cinnamon & sugar and yes, even at 36, she still bakes them for me when she has left-overs : ) My mom was one of 15 kids and she says that my grandma made those for the kids when they had no fruit/filling fior a real pie and they loved it just the same.
    hooray for a healthy baby!

4:11am – what are you doing up!?!? Well, I was up too, with a crazy one year old who wanted to chat and smooch, etc. I have not done cinnamon crust but have you tried a ‘pig tail’ where you mash together and roll out the left over crust and then coat it with butter, cinnamon and sugar and roll it across into a long roll and then curl it up into the shape of a pigtail. D-licious! I have been looking to upgrade to a 50d or 60d – hopefully soon. My G11 is not cutting it anymore after seeing your stunning pictures. Enjoy your ‘do less’ weekend with a SOOOO-O big here from my little ones to yours!

Rain renews…nature and our nature. It calls us to the interior…resting, reflecting, remembering to enjoy an old movie, to hear the hum of the refrigerator, to be forced to find fun in the shadows. It looks like you did! And crust bits were always my favorite. Our nella is getting “so big.”. But she still melts in my arms and I hope she always will! She “shined” our lives! She brings a rainbow from the rain.

Our do nothing weekend involves leaving the dishes and laundry for another day. We’ll be outside all day today with friends and family in the snow going down the sled run (ala “luge) my husband builds each winter in our steep backyard. It’s cold, but balanced with trips inside for hot chocolate and soup it’s PERFECT!.

It’s nice to wake up to find a post by you…I must sheepishly admit that I often check to see if you’ve put up a new post before I go to bed, and often you have- so there have been a couple of occasions where I have met you in my dreams. Nothing weird, we just hang out with your girls and I imagine it is much like when your girlfriends come over…chatting, laughing, being. 🙂

Soaking up some of this CA sunshine lately, and I must I always welcome the rain (we’re forecasted to get some next week). It helps balance me, and like you- have a “do less” day. Plus, I love how after the rain our hills turn a beautiful shade of green! I think a lot of people under-appreciate a good rain day, forgetting that it’s necessary to rejuvenate life (nature’s, and our own).

Happy weekend to you, Kelle…and as always thank you for the inspiration you bring through your photography (I am trying to take more pictures and blog more as well).

Growing up in South Florida, I’d never experienced the magic of a snow day until my new SC town got buried for a few days last month! It was pure bliss! Sledding, coffee drinking, snow-exploring bliss! I grew up with hurricane days, of course, but there’s something nice about an unexpected day off where you don’t have to board up windows 🙂

I love this post. I love that cozy ‘do less’ feeling. We live in the Seattle area so we have A LOT of those days. Being from Missouri I always loved rainy days that meant we are going to stay inside, sip coffee, watch movies and just chill…. but living here I have had to shift my thinking because if we ‘did less’ every rainy day… we would never do anything!!! I love the rain but I look forward to the day when we move back closer to home and we have fewer of them so we can really enjoy them again.

Nella is such a happy, healthy looking baby! I can’t get over her infectious smile! I find myself smiling back at her pictures when I see them – then I realize, she can’t actually SEE me smiling at her 😉

We’re in the opposite boat you’re in, weather wise. But we live in Washington State – so we’re a little bit over the cloudy, rainy weather. Even though we haven’t had THAT much rain over the past few weeks, its just that we miss the sun. We’re from California, so I guess there’s a learning process that goes along with all this moving from state-to-state 🙂

So glad Nella had a wonderful check up! Such a healty, vibrant girl, and she IS “so big”! Love the do nothing pictures, reading books snuggled under a blanket and watching the rain through the door. And I think I spied a cloth diaper again 😉

We’ve had a few too many “do less” days around here between sickies, numerous cold snowy days, and magical Christmas elves who popped back in for a five year old birthday surprise and all the glorious mess that accompanies celebrating another year of life with our sweet “little” boy. Forget the slippage phase, we’ve dipped way down into full on “grab a shovel, it’s time to dig out” phase. So that’s our today. It’s a balmy 44 outside, so we have window blinds open, pretending spring is on it’s way and cleaning like we wanna find the floor so we can dance. 🙂 And we will dance, and play for a bit, to celebrate a job well done before moving to the next room and do it all again. 🙂 Enjoy your do nothing day!

Ah, and we are having a weekend of “do more”. 45 today and 49 tomorrow (sadly, these are very warm days). Blue skies beaconing to come outside and to romp in the sun and the wind and the dirt. We spent 2 hard hours at the playground and now I need the nap as much as Alex does. Ah, but the silence has my sewing machine whispering sweet nothings to come and play. So I must because that’s where I find my zen.

And we have a disaster of glitter in the kitchen and living room from Valentines, but on the note of do less…it just glimmers in the sunlight.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. And I’ll have to try your mom’s trick for remaining scraps.

Come live in Vancouver – you could have lots of “do less” days here! 🙂 But, we’re all-good with it! A true Vancouverite grows an umbrella out the end of their arm, every year from about October to April….And – then in the remaining months, we don’t need it as an appendage – but, keep a couple behind the front door – just in case – so that every time we leave the house, we can be prepared! Rain is good – it keeps everything green – and a lady’s complexion beautiful! :)……..

I do love all the ‘rain stuff’ you found to capture with your camera. I rarely think to take pictures of puddles – and – rain on my rear-view mirror – and umbrellas – even cute ones – because, well – they’re all a constant – nuthin’ picture-worthy there! I can see that I was wrong – I’ll have to try some shots of my own….

Love your pictures of your girls – and Nella’s “so big” picture – oh.my.gosh! How cute is she?? Little Miss Personality Babe! So happy that you received a “well-baby” check-up….

    Kelle-

Your “the see-saw must shift its balance from time to time” comment jumped off the screen for me…When I was 5 years-old I sat on the “high side” of a see-saw at recess & when the whistle blew to line up the kid on the other side jumped off. I crashed to the ground, breaking my leg as the see-saw came down on it. The see-saw must and will shift from time to time and occassionaly it shifts with such unexpected force that our lives are changed. Your family experienced a major shift just over a year ago and although as scary as your new reality must have been at first, I don’t think you would change any of it. Shift embraced.

Your posts remind me that the part of motherhood that I have always dreamed of is not just missing in my life, it’s just not quite there yet. I want to do so much with my kids (daughter recently 2 and son 7 months), but I find myself in a tornado of stress very frequently – too frequently. I know that I could do better in this stage and that I often don’t know the extent of my childrens’ abilities because we all get bogged down by the day-to-day. But I also know that they’re still babies! All the activities I have planned and looked forward to will still come. When my daughter is just a bit older, she will talk to me and tell me about what she’d like to do. I can’t wait! Thanks for the reminders of what is to come:-)

I love that first ‘do less’ day. Though, I’ll admit that I get anxious for it to melt after a day or two. Hard to shed those warm climate roots! Those well-child visit pics of Nella are so adorable! My mom ALWAYS made cinnamon crust with the leftover pie dough too!! Lainey is looking SO grown up! Her face is changing into more of like a big girl instead of a little kid face. So cute!

    xoxo God bless!

We are having “opposite day” to your weather up here in Ohio. It is 50 degrees today…a heat wave. We went to the Krohn conservatory to see all the spring flowers and then to our favorite park high above the Ohio River where the boys could run, climb across a small frozen pond, cross a bridge and enjoy the view all without having to wear a coat.
    Happy weekending susan Great pics!

I am constantly surrounded by british accents and bad weather – and find it very easy to ‘do less’ with my 2 little ladies.

However my films of choice tend to be full of american accents, cowboys and sunshine…. I guess we all like the escapism of the different!

Your third photo–rain splashing–is possibly one of my favorite non-kid photos of yours ever. Awesome.

Glad you’re having what some would call a snow day. We still have 2 1/2 feet on the ground which I love, but also looking forward to barefeet and swimsuits.

Cracker Pie is what my mom always called the leftover pie crust that we put cinnamon sugar on and baked. The perfect snack for a Do Less sort of weekend!

In our house growing up the left over pie crust baked with cinnamon and sugar was “Johnny Crust.” Mom is not sure why we called it that, except that her mother always called it too!
It is my all time favorite treat!!

mmm, the rain. something especially calming&comforting about it – allowing us to celebrate the change both with our bright boots&umbrellas, and with our snugglyblanketcoveredselves pressing noses to the paned glass.

big sigh. big smile. gotta love the Do Less end of the spectrum!

I’ve never been a pie person (cake-girl all the way!) but one of my favorite memories from childhood is watching my mom roll out pie dough… knowing that any scraps would be covered with sugar & cinnamon and baked up special for my brother & I to enjoy.
Love the pic of Nella & the doc and such a fab “so big” from her bag of tricks!

When Eric from Blanket my Baby informed us that our Pat-a-Cake Baby Starling Lovey blanket was going to be featured on your blog, I zoomed over to check it out! All I can say is that I was “stuck” for several hours crying and laughing and loving every beautiful photograph. There is nothing more moving for me than to see our products being loved by real babies 🙂 You captured that well.

    Hello,
Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Thomas Mittower and I am on a quest to provide equestrian therapy to special needs kids in a rural area of Central California. My theory is every baby and toddler needs a blanket or two or three and if people find out they can support equestrian therapy for even one special needs child and get a blanket they want for their child at the same time it is a win/win.
What I am looking for here is a link to the website: http://www.buybabyblanketsnow.com and I am willing to reciprocate a link back to you.
If I have your interest but you are not convinced, there is more information about this quest at http://www.buybabyblanketsnow.com/equestrian-center.
Thank you for your time and I hope to hear back from you soon.
    Most Sincerely,

    Thomas Mittower
