You Have Arrived

December 17, 2010 By Kelle

About this time yesterday morning, I was driving along a stretch of valley rolled out between the staggered snowy peaks that pave the way to Park City. It was breathtaking in a this-can’t-be real kind of way, and mountain sirens called me from every precipice. I wanted to take pictures of all of it. To stop at every red barn sugared with snow, every grazing horse in a cold white field, every hidden waterfall that mysteriously hung from an invisible source along the face of icy mountain.

Photobucket

Photobucket

As our elevation creeped higher, we joked that mountain air has a little something extra. Because we were light-headed with awe. Apparently, I’m not the only one who thinks this, because someone’s makin’ money off the t-shirts that agree.

Photobucket

So, we drove.

Photobucket

High on life and mountain air. Until, after 40 minutes of pointing and gasping (seriously, at one point there were clouds of steam waltzing across the surface of an icy lake and this mess of mountains around it. It was INSANE), we drove up the steep incline of Main Street in Park City Utah.

Photobucket

It was so entirely Rockwellesque. Like we were living inside one of those ceramic Christmas villages or tapping on the glass inside a virtual snowglobe. I twisted the steering wheel, sidling up against an icy curb in a crappy parallel park job outside the cafe where we were supposed to meet a friend, and then we heard it.

The voice of the rental car’s navigation system. It was choppy and robotic, but do you know what she said?

You. Have. Arrived.

Bitch knows what she’s talkin’ about.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Dude, even the fire hydrants are picturesque.

Photobucket

Seriously, I want to make out with Park City. I want to lie on a bear skin rug with that town and have a moment. Figuratively, of course.

We met Heather, a beautiful mama of six chidren. We are bonded by the small connection of daughters who have Down syndrome, but more so by the much grander connection of sharing a passion for life and people and basking in the good. I knew she lived in Salt Lake, so when the Utah opportunity arose, well…the rest was history.

Photobucket

She is lovely, and so is her daughter Mia who tagged along and kept Nella entertained.

Photobucket

And it’s always funny how, like life, this “big thing” that could define us just settles, and life rises to the top. We talked a little about the moment we found out, how we told the neighbors, who was there for us, what we fear, what we look forward to, but then we moved on to the bulk of life. Like how much we love the baby stage and big families and Christmas morning, the funny thing our husbands say, and how hilarious it was that I fell asleep on the plane feeding Nella and woke up to find she had long been finished and my boob had been hanging out for God knows how long.

I loved meeting Heather. And I loved adding another notch on my ever-growing experience belt that confirms what I have come to deeply know…that the world is full of people who are very different from each other…but who are alike in so many more ways.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

As we followed Heather back through the mountains toward the airport, I learned we are alike in one more way…our passion for capturing a picturesque moment. We passed a big white barn, tucked in a vast white valley. I wanted to stop and grab my camera, but we were following her and I didn’t have time to honk and stop her. Alas, Heather had the intuition. She called me as we passed just to see if I saw it too…that big white picturesque barn.

Photobucket

Photobucket

And yes, Nella loved the snow. And never complained once about the cold.

Photobucket
I have no idea what’s up with my hat. It kept sliding up my head, and it looks like a bowl.

Photobucket

And thank you to my dad’s friend, Pat, who found Nella a winter coat in the nick of time for 70 cents at a thrift store.

So, there you have it.
Utah is beautiful, but it was time to come home.

So I said goodbye to the mountains, craning my neck past the guy next to me on the plane to get my last hit.

Photobucket

This morning, amid the mess of a suitcase heaped with dirty laundry and a bedroom begging for a four-hour cleaning blitz, I heard another voice, spoken quietly within me.

You. Have. Arrived.
Home. To messes and to-do lists, but to where I belong. And to my girl who I missed so much.

Photobucket

Photobucket

And I had to smile when, past the play-doh mess on Lainey’s table this morning, I caught a glimpse of Utah at home.

Photobucket

Yes, we have arrived.

And winner of the Heal My Sole giveaway bucket is Comment #580, Sarah Pomranka: Come to Colorado. We do all that stuff; fireside lattes, mountain-fresh powder, holy-fourteen-thousand-feet mountains goodness. Utah has some lovely spots and all, but I’m partial to CO. Prolly cause I live here. 🙂

Sarah, please e-mail your contact info to: kellehamptonblog@comcast.net

Enjoy your weekend.

Love that big white barn! I took a picture of it when I was there in July. Of course instead of a wreath, it had a giiiiiant, barn-sized American flag blowing in the wind. So glorious.

Girl, how do you do it. I knew you didn’t get home until 1 this mroning…and I know how you have to “decompress” so Brett was in my earnest prayers…and now, a big, fat post!!! Well, you made my afternoon break at work delicious! I loved hearing that Lainey whispered to you, upon discovering your return, “Is Nella home too?” Yes, the wanderers have returned. The Poppa prayed for you every mile of the way…and it was 77 cents for that coat–and a special find at a Florida thrift shop!!!

I’m relatively new to your blog and wanted to take a second to say THANK YOU for your positive attitude and your inspiring words and pictures. I am pregnant with my first (also a little girl) and can’t WAIT to start snapping away after she is born.

Question for you — It seems as though you take your camera everywhere…Do you have a camera bag that you recommend or do you just keep it around your neck? Do you typically keep the 50mm/1.4 lens on for everyday purposes??

Thank you again – Your girls are LOVELY.

I might be a little partial but this just might be your best post yet. Hahaha. It’s a little surreal to see pictures of US together on your blog. This post makes me want to rewind life for a minute and do this all over again. I’m amazed you were able to capture that amazing ski lift picture from the car while driving. You’ve got mad skills, girlfriend! Brett is lucky to be able to experience life with you by his side. It’ reminds me of the magic of still being a child. You notice all of the little things that so many of us seem to over look. The beauty in the fire hydrant. The crunch in the snow under your feet. That you just drove UNDER a ski lift. The beauty of your surroundings. It doesn’t matter where you are, what season it is, or who you are with, you make it the best!

And I know EXACTLY the barn you are photographing – I used to live in Provo and made our fair share of trips to Park City while there.

That was so cool and I’m so glad you met one another and jealous that Heather got to meet the famous Nella! And how lucky of you to meet Heather’s ADORABLE family!

We have fallen in love with the beauty of Utah recently too. A few years after we moved to our new city, we started taking road trips a lot and keep returning to Utah each year (sometimes 3 or 4 times a year). It’s great. We went to Park City for the first time a couple of years ago and loved it. In the middle of the week we were there, we walked down the same street that some of your photos were taken on and it started to snow. It was beautiful. We even have some pics in some of the same exact spots that you do. Too funny! I thought the same thing that you did about the Rockwell vibe. I’m glad to see you and sweet Nella had a great time. My husband and I moved to Burnaby, BC back in 2007. Burnaby is a subdivision of the Greater Vancouver Area in British Columbia. I still think that living in surrounding mountains was comparable to living in God’s hands. There were mountains everywhere one looked. Simply beautiful and amazing!

Those photos are to die for! I miss my mountains and my snow SO much. It’s no park city, but they’re MINE and the desert just doesn’t compare. Especially at this time of year. There is so much power and rad history in those mountains, don’t you think? I love imagining how many thousands of people have stood on my mountain (MT. Humphrey, in Flagstaff. I now live in sweltering Phoenix) and have felt that power; and of how much our collective power is worth because of those experiences.

I am convinced that Park City is one of the most incredible places in this world. I have family that lives there and I cherish it every time I get the chance to visit. Its great in the summer, too, great weather, great concerts, great food, etc etc. So glad you got to enjoy it with Miss Nella!!

I am totally hooked on your blog…which is odd in a way as I am a 59 year old retired special education teacher and not too successful author of children’s books. However, you are obvious a unique mom, an esquisite writer, and a special, special person. I have come believe you were truly put on this earth to be exactly where you are now, doing all the marvelous things that you are doing. We live in Austin, Texas. I lived most of my life in British Columbia, Canada (west coast). That is where my two dear grandbabies are……2 months and 17 months old….it is so very hard to live so far away. Well, that is really about it…stay happy…never lose your quality to see the magic in the sweetest, simpliest things in life. We all have your back!! 😉 Carol

I freaking love Utah! I went to college in Idaho and loved being out west. It is so beautiful. You are such a wonderful person, and are an inspiration to me. My own little one with Down syndrome is 5 now, and I still sometimes struggle with things, but you express what I feel perfectly. Thank you for putting your feelings to words and pictures. And, if you’re ever in Indianapolis, look me up! My Mia would love to meet you and your kiddos!

I’m glad that the Utah snow and mountains were amazing for you and nella, and that coming home has just as much the same effect. I’m sure lainey missed you and nella very much.

I love the pictures of nella in the red hat and stripped shirt. I love seeing a picture where her face is screwed up in amusement, it’s absolutely freakin adorable.

And you would have totally looked at me funny and that would have been fine.. and then I scrolled down and saw Lainey’s hat which was even funnier because my son just got the same type hat (but ours is a blue bunny) from his grandparents when we were in Salt Lake! Hey Sunshine…love the screen name! As to “bitch”–it’s not an adjective. It can be an annoying verb as in, “bitch about something.” It is generally a noun, almost a proper noun. While Kelle will tell you I am her Vulgarity Police, our culture and the culture of the young employ some of these terms colloquially without any intended insult. If you noticed, she used it about herself. A bitch is a female dog, and having two or them, I can attest to an attitude and temperament that distinguishes and even endears them. So, I wouldn’t call it an affront to education to use the word…just a word that for many, draws an image that communicates. But hey, Kelle will tell you, I’m in your corner when it comes to any words my mom wouldn’t use…and that’s a long list! Sunshine, I still love it!

sunshine…I’m not trying to be “bitchy” but just find it ironic that you used the word “educated” in your criticism, because this educator thinks it is worse to use “ur” and “luvs” than bitch. Also, if you are are trying to teach your 12 year old through the blog and her writing, you can talk about a writer’s voice. In all sincerity, I applaud you for not wanting your child familiar with that word. I remember being in the 8th grade, reading Catcher in the Rye and had no idea what a “goddamnit” was. I hope my kids will not know that word at 13.

Did not mean to start a war over my critical comment on your blog. It just seems like a world full of reasons to protect our children. They can’t play outside for fear of abductions, Internet is full of snipers waiting to snatch them up or corrupt their brain, and when you live in a society where anything goes, you know you’d better be standing as a watchman on the wall. When my daughter found your blog we cried together over your heartwarming story about Nella’s birth. We don’t bookmark too many blogs but yours was special and I felt as though you were safe. I don’t use any form of foul language around my children and I am educated to know that “bitch” doesn’t quite fit in the foul language category yet am educated also to note that the word has been abused in our society and it seems like other words could be used in it’s place lest it becomes common place. I know that one day she’ll be introduced to all things in spite of my protection. She’ll categorize all of those introductions and will have a choice at that time to choose her own path. May God continue to richly bless your family. Your daughters are beautiful and we enjoy your blog. Cynthia (sunshine)

Sunshine— I think it’s great that you want to protect your children. I’m not a mom yet, but I know that when I am, my kids won’t be those 8, 10, and even 13-year-olds you see today with unlimited access to the internet, Facebook, cell phones, web cams, etc. And hopefully they won’t hate me for it!

That said, as wholesome as Kelle is, she’s still an adult—writing for an adult audience. And sometimes when adults get together, they swear or drink or do things they otherwise wouldn’t do in front of children. It’s tough with the internet though. In real life, you can see when a child walks into the room and know to temper your behavior. With a blog, you never know if the person reading your post is 5 or 55.

In the end, the responsibility falls on the parent. By all means, continue to let your children read Kelle’s beautiful words and be inspired by her photographs. But perhaps read the posts yourself before sharing them with your kids—that way, in the 1% of cases where she writes something that you don’t think is appropriate for children, you don’t have to share it with them. But that’s just my 2 cents.

Kelle, please don’t censor yourself, and keep these amazing posts coming!

Just caught up on your blog from the past week or two and I’m pretty sure I cried through MOST of it! I totally get you! My littlest will be one on January 12th and like you I keep thinking of all of the “this time last year’s” and reminiscing of my big belly and how we were making hospital preparations. Now she’s here and life is just…good. So good. I discovered your blog when my girl was just a few weeks old and I feel like our babies have grown together this year! What an AMAZING and FAST year it has been! Also, I totally get the way you felt at Lainey’s ballet recital. My oldest just had her Christmas recital last week and I laughed, I cried, I was SOOOO proud! I too wanted to stand up and say SHE’S MINE by the way! As if everyone else in the room was as fixated on her as I was! I’ve watched the video 100 times and lauged and cried some more! Love your blog. I live in the Tampa area and I’ve wondered before what I would say if our paths ever crossed. Haha, like would I be starstruck, because that’s a little creepy. Or would I be like, I totally know you…because that’s a little creepy too! Anyway, I’m feeling inspired so I’d better go act on inspiration! Happy Holidays!

AWESOME, awesome, awesome! We are moving to the snow in a few weeks and I am so excited. It’s sure to be magical for the kids. Can’t wait to go sledding and chase it with hot coco.

So glad that I came across your blog so many months ago. I read the book “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years” after you raved about it and it too changed my life.

I’m taking the bull by the horns and writing a better story. The adventure awaits. : )

Happy weekend to you. Hugs to all.

I just found your blog via your daughters’ nursery on Apartment Therapy and thought I’d comment. I read many of your entries, your birth story for your second daughter, and admired your pictures. Everything about this site is beautiful, including you and your daughters (and your photography of course). I think I’ll look around your blog some more and admire the photography. 🙂

I’m not usually a commenter but wanted to thank you for reminding me about what a beautiful place I grew up in. I skied those slopes every weekend with my crew, it was our “mall” hang out. I rode past that white barn every day on the school bus on the way to Treasure Mountain Middle School. I can practically smell Utah by your perfect pictures of it. I can’t wait until February for my much needed and long anticipated return! It’s been a long 7 years. Thanks 🙂

To SUNSHINE, et al – just my two cents , is all but i dont think it’s a war at all and i think we are all jsut sharing ideas and views here. BUT, I do feel that this is mostly a blog designed for adults and Kelle IS a big girl, as Poppa rik says she tells him, i see on his comment here. (NOT that I am saying vulgarity is ued here usually or anything like that). And we are all big boys and girls. And,hey, I have seen in the past, COMMENTS posted here that actually include the “F” word and hey, maybe it isn’t a word that I use or many use, and maybe the word bitch is not a word some use, but I don’t let it bother me. I would only be bothered if anyone ever commented (and I havent seen it yet) but IF someone commented something hateful or racist or nasty against a group of people. And those are the things I worry more about my grandkids being exposed to, I guess. But the f word and ‘bitch’ don’t really concern me. (NOT that I want my grandkids hearing that, but they are 2 yrs old. SOrry, but I think many 12 yr-olds have probably heard the word Bitch whether we admit it or know it, and whether we really like it. And no, we dont have to use it all the time in our homes, around our kids). Just sharing here. KELLE< I just about died laughing at “bitch knows what she’s talking about”.

How fun that you got to meet up with Heather in Park City! She has the cutest family! I live just a few blocks from her. Looks like you had a fun time! Park City is beautiful and Sundance just happens to be my favorite place in Utah. I love the little restaurant you ate in. You are right, you can’t beat “picture window or fireside.” Come back in the summer! It doesn’t disappoint then either. Gorgeous and great little hikes to waterfalls! Your pictures really did capture it perfectly and make me appreciate where we live even more.
I have been a follower of your blog since I read Nella’s birth story. I have to say, your blog and your words helped make everything all better and still do. You are real and I love it! My daughter has DS and just turned 2 Thursday. If you ever make it back to Salt Lake, I’d love to meet you and famous Nella and Lanie in person! Thanks again for your words and amazing photographs! Glad you made it back home safe!
