Enjoying the Friday Things

July 31, 2010 By Kelle

Photobucket

Blue skies and breezy palms that hang outside the windshield like a perfect snowglobe wonderland. Her arched back that stretches up from her toys in search of my voice. Fabulous heels with jeans…on a Friday…just because. A pool full of boys that scream and holler and laugh and push each other off the big tube that floats like an island from shallow to deep, deep to shallow. And the little tube just for me because my feet begged me to take them for a dip, and I obliged. A killer $5 clearance tee from Marshalls that’s soft and hugs in all the right places. Afternoon baths with citrus ginger bubbles and my little companion who swaddles into soft terrycloth post suds like perfection. Hot orange peel tea, steeped for two and a half minutes, sipped slowly in the sun. The soft milky skin of pudgy feet. The deep stare of chameleon eyes that beg me to know more about her. Clearing the heap of clothes mess off the dresser to reveal rich wood and pretty treasures beneath…like winter’s snow finally melting to unveil lush grass below. Witnessing a rare bottle feeding, sister style–rough and gentle at the same time. The magic of the little sprite sleeping. Maryjanes. And behold…the first time in a year…a hair cut. A real one–not the kindergarten Fiskars job I give myself every couple months. A babysitter and a quiet drive. A head massage and the half-asleep trance I fall into to the accompaniment of *snip*snip*snip*. And the best? Sleek glossy ends that fall softly against my shoulder. Ends that don’t look like a cat chewed on them. Bliss, Baby.

(Ask for Nidia at Naples’ L’Image. She’s never let me down.)

And Lainey spent much of the day with Grandma Colleen today, so the bunny and I quietly sank into Lover’s Land where time melts like cotton candy…time that is spent nursing and cooing and photographing her trillion expressions so that I don’t forget a one. I watch her like a movie, drinking her in sip by sip. She is delicious.

These funny faces send Lainey into fits of belly-shaking toddler laughter. “Baby ‘ella so funny,” she says.

Dessert, I tell you. Spooning-the-last-drips-of-goodness-from-the-bottom-of-the-bowl delightful.

Happy Weekend.

I am so very touched by your thoughts since you are not contrived or fake – you are just Kelle – unique in every way. You provide inspirational honesty. I am including a poem from my childhood that I am afraid will be forgotten. I am sharing my love of these sweet little words with you so hopefully you will find what was given to me many years ago in the Garden of Shut-Eye Town.

    THE SUGAR-PLUM TREE

    by: Eugene Field (1850-1895)

Have you ever heard of the Sugar-Plum Tree?
Tis’ a marvel of great renown!
It blooms on the shore of the Lollipop sea
    In the garden of Shut-Eye Town;
The fruit that it bears is so wondrously sweet
(As those who have tasted it say)
That good little children have only to eat
Of that fruit to be happy next day.

When you’ve got to the tree, you would have a hard time
    To capture the fruit which I sing;
The tree is so tall that no person could climb
To the boughs where the sugar-plums swing!
But up in that tree sits a chocolate cat,
And a gingerbread dog prowls below–
And this is the way you contrive to get at
    Those sugar-plums tempting you so:

You say but the word to that gingerbread dog
And he barks with such terrible zest
That the chocolate cat is at once all agog,
    As her swelling proportions attest.
And the chocolate cat goes cavorting around
From this leafy limb unto that,
And the sugar-plums tumble, of course, to the ground–
    Hurrah for that chocolate cat!

There are marshmallows, gumdrops, and peppermint canes,
With stripings of scarlet or gold,
And you carry away of the treasure that rains
As much as your apron can hold!

So come, little child, cuddle closer to me
In your dainty white nightcap and gown,
And I ‘ll rock you away to that Sugar-Plum Tree
In the garden of Shut-Eye Town.

“The Sugar-Plum Tree” is reprinted from Poems of Childhood. Eugene Field. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1904.

And I see a comment from someone in Rochester, MI…where I live and love life! Can’t wait to see you, and babysit for you…selfishly wanting you to leave me alone to enjoy the girls! And boys if they are around! Have a wonder filled weekend–I know you will!

I visit your blog every day…several times on some days – disappointed when you haven’t added something new – but also realistic about and thankful for your time that you already share so willingly with me. I want to go back in time and stop to enjoy my now-adult children with the intention you have with your sweet ones. I want to capture the moments on my camera that you are doing, so that now, when their faces are busy with children and jobs, I could revisit the magical times you are capturing. How in the world did you know at such a young age, just how important these moments are? How did you know just how fleeting they are? Fortunately, there are grand children and another chance to let the cleaning go while I cook with them – while I play in ways I didn’t know back then! Thanks so much for the joy you share.

Took my camera to the splash pad today to capture my son running in and out of the water… I love capturing these little things that you’ve taught me to photograph. No more grip and grin photos here – there’s much more life to them. I’m working on getting that light and clear focus that you have, but it’s fun learning, especially with two perfect little muses.

I have been going through some mommy blues lately and reading your posts just makes me cry and I just wonder how you do it, how do u find happiness in the smallest things when I complain about the smallest things? You are my inspiration for finding little things to be happy about especially our littles. They make any bad day seem not too shabby. Love, Love your blog. You are an amazing woman! May God bless you and your family. It’s not easy finding inspiration close by but I found it just a click away…your blog. I love how her biggest smiles force those gorgeous eyes to close and curl up even larger than her mouth; as if the eyes took a double-dog dare from the mouth to outshine the other. And the scarf shots…pirate to princess as you moved it around. Adorable.

Kudos to you on the vintage looking collage. Cool. It’s wonderful to see your photography and your design concepts emerge every day. Your magic extends beyond your lens.

LOVE the pic of Nella up on her arms with the sock monkey. My youngest son, Lucas, is just a few weeks younger – he will be 6 months next week and I LOVE their facial expressions and how they get that giggle that makes your heart just swell.

How do you decide what pictures to print/keep? Do you store them all on DVD’s? I know I have a godzillion saved on my computer because I just can’t part with most of them – I can’t imagine how many you have since they are all worth saving..but maybe that’s the key. You probably just take one good shot of a pose and I take 20 trying to get a great one, lol.

I too am a photographer, a passion I have never been formally trained in aside from classes I took in college. I’ve slowly been building up clients, hoping to branch out into a photography business.
I stumbled upon your blog and love it, you share your heart in a very open and approachable way that makes reading your blog very insightful.
Nella is precious, and I cried after reading her birth story. There is no love like the love of a mother and child, aside from the Love of the One of made us.

She is positively gorgeous and it makes my heart happy to know that she has a wonderful Momma drinking in all that delightfulness.

If it didn’t sound so creepy, I would buy a ticket to Florida just so I could snuggle Nella for about ten minutes. She is so darn gorgeous….being a mother is definitely the best thing in the world. I don’t care what I have as long as I have my little monkeys! Love the pictures….love the story! Thank you for letting me be a part of your life through this blog!

Hi there! I thank God for your life because whenever I needed to be inspired I just go to your page. Everything about you, your family and your life seems wonderfully put together. I speak blessings upon you and may you continue to bless others around you. Nella too is a constant reminder of God’s love. She’s such a wonderful wonderful gift from our Him.

Summergibbs, 10 minutes would only create a bond that would make leaving more painful…believe me, I know. When I am with them, I just want to be more in their lives…but I guess that is what grandparenting is all about…knowing we have to leave before they are all done, so we cherish every moment we have to imprint their tiny hearts with our too-big love!

Both of your girls are so beautiful and full of life! I especially enjoyed these pictures of Nella with her adorable head scarf! She is just breathtaking! My husband and I are expecting in February, adding a 3rd to our brood. I hope we are as blessed as you have been! Thank you for sharing!

Oh! And a question! Where do you find all of those darling leggings/socks for Nella? They are the sweetest!

    Kelle,
I just came across your blog at the recommendation of my friend and colleague. These pictures are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. Thank you for sharing your story, your life with us.

With grandbabygirls, 5 months old and 3 months old, I devour anything and everything about Nella–I do believe they will all someday be cyberfriends!

My grandbabygirls have these very babylegs that Nella is wearing, made by my daughter, from women’s kneesox from Target! $1.40 a pair (yay! on sale!) and 5-10 minutes of sewing time.

I can’t WAIT to see Lidia this week. My hair hasn’t seen real shears since my baby shower 6 months ago. Thanks for the rec. I recently moved back to Naples (i was born and raised here) and it’s hard to find the right stylist. Do you recommend her for brows too? 🙂 thanks!! Awesome shots of your bunny.
