In summer, we make lists. We make lists of all the things we will do and whether or not we will actually do them, the process of making these lists and talking about them is exciting. Like watching a trailer for a really good movie. The Hamptons Summer. It has a really good soundtrack and one of those sexy deep voice-overs that says “Coming to a Theater Near You.” There are colors and sunshine and clouds that stand out against vibrant skies so amazingly, just talking about it makes me crazy.
So, this morning Brett and I did one of our dreamy previews. Where we sipped coffee and leaned on the counter in our pajamas and said things like…Let’s have more barbecues. Let’s light more tiki torches at night. Let’s take the kids to Clam Pass. Let’s buy a slip-n-slide. Let’s have people over and make mojitos and let kids play in the pool past their bed time.
And I can feel it. That swirling of childhood wonder that brews within and gets stirred up now and then to release a storm of happiness. Like strange winds that sweep onto dry, barren grounds and slowly begin to stir up sand and pebbles until giant dust clouds are swirling and something has awakened.
That’s what summer does. Inspires me. To relive childhood happinesses and somehow strive to create some magical land of happy days and colorful memories for my kids.
My summer memories as a kid: Cousins. Lots of them. We grew up with our cousins and spent just about every weekend with my mom’s twin sister’s kids. We made our own Olympics once. With events like trampoline jumping and cartwheeling. We even hand made gold medals that hung on ribbons around our neck. We stretched garbage bags across our back lawn, nailed them down to the ground and slopped dish soap and hose water on them to create the coolest homemade slip n’ slide ever. And we slipped across it on our stomachs like otters, skidding into the grass at the end to a painful stop. We took trips to Tawas where we ran along Lake Huron searching for Petoskey stones and green beach glass and spent afternoons up at the Rock Shop.
Just writing about it does something to me. Ignites that spark that dwells within where all the seemingly mundane things our parents did for us as a kid stitch together to represent something bigger. This amazing summer tapestry. And I want to do it for mine. I want to make magical summers for my girls.
So, the list goes on.
Blow bubbles in the summer heat…Check.
Wear swishy skirts and go for barefoot walks in the neighborhood…Check.

And, have you checked out that book? Totally wonderful. My copy is tattered and worn and the page that fell out today has these happies typed on its yellowed paper: onion soup & sour cream dip; liking others, accepting others, laughing with others; melon baskets; adjustable pop beads; small sun-drenched houses overlooking a bay; lemon sherbet; rummage sales; a rousing rendition of the “Hallelujah Chorus”; ship’s clocks; being an archeologist in your own back yard. Yup. I like this book.
Lainey and I had a mama date today. She’s been needing one. So have I. She likes to yell “BE KY-ET!” now if people are talking too loud and it’s disturbing whatever toddler activity she’s doing. And she doesn’t exactly say it nicely. Her face contorts and she points a finger and the voice that comes out is very loud and Baby Jane-ish. We’re working on it. In the meantime, there’s mornings like today when she’s soft and quiet and her hair gets wet in the sea and her bangs pull back and what’s left is this face…this baby face that makes me think for just a minute, she’s really little again.
We had a morning beach date. Just her and I. Scrounged up the beach toys and toted them along brick paved paths that led to blue seas that thankfully aren’t scattered with tar balls or oily pelicans.
Our beaches are beautiful, strewn with brightly-patterned umbrellas and canopied with open skies that are so blue, they look painted.
My favorite today? This little huddle of senior citizens out in the gulf. They all wore cute beach hats and floated on fanoodles and I could hear them laughing from my towel. Like they meet here once a week or something. For a party in the water. And I think that’s exactly what I want to be when I grow up.
And by favorite, I meant second favorite because my favorite today was most definitely watching my summer sprite splash about in her sunny yellow suit.
Oh, my Florida girl. A day at the beach is just another day…how cool is that? We watched as tiny silvery fish darted in schools under the shallow pool that rippled in the sun. Blah-blahs, Lainey calls them.
I waded in the water with her in my rolled-up jeans. Got them completely soaked so that my wet cuffs felt like heavy weights above my ankles, but it didn’t matter. It felt so….summer. Salty and sandy and sunny.
And she was so happy, my summer girl.
And it might sound really cheesy-poetic and over-flowery in a Kelle kind of way to say she frolicked like a sprite in the sea, but Dude…she frolicked like a sprite in the sea.
And our new summer rule is that all sea-frolicking must follow with mint chip at the corner beach store.
And then, when the sun is hot and our backs are sticky and the heavy wet cuffs of my jeans have been generously coated with coarse sand, we retreat back home for indoor summer pleasures.
Like stripping the sheets off my bed and climbing on the white pillow top for lounging and loving with my girls. I love my bed.
It’s grand and ornate and has swooping silky canopies that gather over thick wooden posts. Its wood is rich and its headboard is detailed. You’d think I’d take pictures there all the time. The thing is, my bedroom’s never clean. My pretty nightstands are towered with books and baby wipes and dried up markers without caps. And the tassled toss pillows that tuck against the beautiful mattelasse I had to have are usually buried under wrinkled clothes that may or may not ever make it to drawers. But, I’m spending more and more time in there and enjoying it…even if I have to kick a few piles of crap to get to my bed. The girls love this bed and we’ve spent many a morning, many an evening cuddled into pretzel-y positions with our babies, whispering sweet nothings in their ears.
And we do great airplanes from the foundation of our little-bit-firm-but-little-bit-soft mattress.
It is the perfect place to hide on a summer afternoon. To open the sliders next to our bed during a June rain and listen to a chorus of bullfrogs. To sidle up next to little bodies and kiss tiny feet, hold tiny fingers, wisp away blonde strands from cherub cheeks and tell stories of summer adventures. Like barbecues. And trips to Clam Pass. Lighting tiki torches and diving into pool waters for late night swims.

We found her sleeping with all these baby dolls around her, one snuggled on her chest just like she sees mama sleeping with Sisterbear.
So far, we have one delicious June.
And I’m loving my little Junebugs.
Oh…and loving this clip. Wanting to reenact every scene right down to that shower ‘hawk.
And a shout-out to Karen at Michigan’s DNRE. I’m wavin’. And I see you.

o ur girls are just so beautiful! I love following your story! I SO love that pic of Nella at the end! she’s growing so fast!
Beauty photos and kick ass video clip. That was hilarious.
Kelle, I can’t believe I’m second. There is nothing like a day at the beach. Just recently me 29 year old, told me how she loved our vacations by the ocean. As usual i am loving the pictures of your little ones.

Thanks, I needed to smile.

I love your new additions of letting the girls stay up for late night swims, more BBQs and tiki torches! Sounds like a wonderful June! I wish some Florida sun would come warm up our Connecticut cold. Summer can’t seem to start this year 🙁 !! I’m rushing my CT (lack of) summer along so I can get to my relocating-to-Naples-in-August fall!!
I watched the video 3 times, and Moses my 9 month old love it. And then I declared it my favorite and posted it to my FB!
I feel so much the same way! As the school year winds down and the nights get later and later I get more and more excited about what is to come 🙂 Special, magical, summer days! LOVE this!
Oh, and PS I totally have a copy of 14,000 things to be happy about. I think it was published in 1993 or 94 and I went right to the Hallmark store and bought a copy.
Being happy is the way to be : )
Oh! and I wish California beaches looked like that!
these are beautiful pictures! thank you for sharing them! i love keeping up with your story!!!
I love the picture of Lainey sleeping with the baby on her!!!
Nella is growing sooo fast!
We are having a FABULOUS June as well…it was 9 weeks yesterday since I had my first surgery and yesterday I got released from my 2nd one I had May 2nd, so I am sooo enjoying mommyhood again :o) I had been so excited for the break in April(I have 5 kiddos), but by the time 4 weeks rolled around, I was missing the daily life of being a stay at home mommy!!!
Enjoy the rest of June!!!
I love your blog. I read it often (whenever you have a new post) and it always makes me happy. Thank you for always sharing.
BTW~ I am TOTALLY a summer list maker. I do it every year as well and it makes me giddy.
Our favorite beach…
And our favorite thing to do during the summer.
We will have to try the mint chocolate chip finale next time!

and kissing those sweet babies!
Reading your blog and seeing those photos of the white sand and turquoise water makes me wish I was on the East Coast again for the summer. Summers on Cape Cod! I miss it! To be a kid again…
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
My son just finished school today and of course we are going to be in the pool at night and watch movies past their bedtime. I love summer. You also reminded me of my summers back then as a child.
P.s. Saw your husband at wal-mart this afternoon.
Gaby
I want to live where you live. Looks GORGEOUS!
And…if possible…your girls get cuter every day. That last picture of Nella makes me grin from ear to ear.
Can you send some of that sun to Oregon. It is still raining here and I can’t wait for summer.
Summer here is baseball games for my son. Softball games for my daughter. Eating sunflower seeds by the handful and then realizing you can’t feel your tongue, lips or the cheek you stored them in. 🙂 So many other summer fun stuff … that can’t start until the rain stops.
And Kelle as always your writing and pictures are amazing. 🙂
Keep on Rockin …
S~
Yep, summer lists. Love ’em!
Very fun post!! My little 2 1/2 yr old caught a glimpse of the photo of nella with her dollies on the bed….she perked up and said, “Mommy, I want that one”, I pointed to the doll up above,….she said, “No, that one” and pointed right at Nella!!!!
How cute!!!!
I guess I better get into baby making mode 😉
Yeah for Florida girls! All our sandy toes, pruney hands, and sea salt smelling hair. I {heart} you old citizen picture reminds me of my grandparents wading their retirement away in the Gulf.
Thanks for making me smile…
Amy
great pix and just watched the video. AWESOME total awesomeness
How much do I wish we lived by the beach after reading this post?!?! Here in Phoenix, we have the heat, but no ocean to escape to! 🙁
But regardless, we have an awsome summer planned, and because I have the advantage of working at a school I am literally counting down the days until my summer vacation starts! (Much like a 10 year, but whatever)
Great pics today, glad you got to spend mommy and daughter time with Lainey!

I want to be those people when I grow up too. But honestly, I want to be at the beach right.now. Considering I am way over here in Missouri, I don’t think that will happen anytime soon. You inspired me to take my camera to the pool tomorrow to capture some of my own little man frolicking, though! Thanks!
Oh. And that photo of Nella at the end…deeelish!
YAY bubbles!!!
🙂
I just want to climb right into those beach pics–Gorgeous. and the ones of the girls hanging out in bed, sleeping, playing and that last one of Nella—oh my gosh, just made me cry. your girls are beautiful and the happiness just radiates!!!! thank you as always for sharing your life and your loves!
I love your blog. I check everyday to see if you have a new entry. Our littles are almost the same age but mine are both boys…Love love love the outfits and your pics they are just amazing!!
You wouldn’t believe how much my heart leaps when I log into blogger and you have a new post 🙂
You have such a beautiful life. Thank you for sharing!
I heart your blog. I really like these lists you make. My husband and I were talking about it last night and decided to start making lists ourselves. Just fun things we want to do, fun places we want to take our little brood and new stuff we’d like to try, as a family.
thanks for all the grand ideas!
LOVE this post 🙂 Thanks for brightening up my day 🙂
everything about this post is beautiful beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m just echoing everyone else in say it, but this post, as always, was so beautiful – and your daughters are so beautiful, as well! Glad I’m not the only one who makes summer lists, even if I don’t end up doing half the things on them… who curls up in the middle of the winter with a pen to nibble on and a pad of paper, and closes my eyes to imagine before putting down things like s’mores, catching fireflies, stopping at our local A & W’s where they still brew root beer on-site, and spending rainy afternoons in bed with my one year old. Your description of summers with your cousins brought back wonderful memories of my own summers with my own cousin (who is still as close to me as a sister), making up all sorts of our own sweet, innocent, and educational fun.
Thanks for all the writing you do, you truly are an inspiration!
HAHA! That clips was fantastic! LOVE THAT!
~Wave from West Michigan~ (Hmm…from someone who use to work for the DNRE…but no place cool like Lake Michigan or Huron)
the beautiful is gorgeous…how far a drive is it from your home? I think Lainey could use a smaller size bathing suit, her undies look like they are about to fall off any minute. And she still has her binkie…wow!
OMGoodness! I love your blog and I love your girls! It always makes my day to see your blog title bolded in my blog reader list! You really inspire me to be a better, more involved, more fun mother!!!
I’m loving that last pic. of Nella. Ugh- she is so precious. And I have to confess, every time I hear talk of the oil spill I feel sad and worried for the Isle of Capri, like it’s my own to worry about, even though I’ve never been there….
-McCall
look at all that COLOUR! (yes, we add u’s to words up here in Canada)
Love these sunny day pictures!
The one of Lainey digging with the green pail in it is my fav. You just can’t force colour like that!
And Nella’s smile?! too cute!
looks like you are just a plowin’ through that Summer list girl!
The first thing on mine was -buy a great bathing suit from Popina and hope it fits…well guess what? Just got it today and its rockin!
Love from your Northern Neighbour!
p.s. Staying up past bed time should be a rule in the Summer. I get giddy thinking about my childhood Summers as well 🙂
What Fun! I just have to say, there’s nothing more “summer” than finding Petoskey stones in Michigan in the summer! Can’t wait to take my little one on that journey!
Oh, no I forgot to write this in my previous comment….
In making my son’s 1yr scrapbook I tried writing something beautiful like you do about breastfeeding my little guy, I was proud and a little embarrassed. My husband read it and didn’t say anything…so I asked him what he thought and he said, ” I don’t know what it feels like to breastfeed, I don’t understand the bond, but the way you wrote it sounds romantic!” Ah, ha,ha!! I deleted it, I gave up and moved on! It’s not as easy as you’d think to write so beautifully, I wish I had it in me! There’s so much I have to express but can’t seem to put it in words! Brandy
Lainey looked so cute in her suit frolicking in the sand and surf. OMGosh that last picture however of Nella just captured my heart. Oh what beautiful summer memories you will make and how lucky are we that you decided to share them with us. Can’t wait to hear how your summer goes.
Loved that last pic of Nella smiling! Also crackin’ up at that movie clip. I love to rock out to songs like that. LOL!
LOVE those seniors with their matching hats. That was GREAT!
Those one on one times are so important. It seems it gets harder to find time for that…glad your doing that with Lainey. So sweet. I loved your special date.
Way back when I first came across your blog, I was suffering from depression and I saw your book “14,000 things to be Happy About”. I got on amazon.com right then and ordered it. Now I am on medication, am a completely different person, and my book has its own little shelf in my guest bathroom. I love you and your blog : )
Senior Beach Day!
That picture made my heart ache, in the best sort of way.
Once again Kelle, thanks for sharing your sunshine – be that it’s physical or literal or even a wacky You Tube video.
Lainey is just precious and I love the soggy bathing suit as she frolicked. I added slip n’ slide to my list last week, seeing that we have the perfect slight downhill pitch that makes the ride exciting…but the question is where to ditch? Mulch or to the edge of the sidewalk? Sort of reminds me of great sledding as a kid – where to ditch? before you hit the street or take the risk and cross over the street.
That video is rocking and now I will have “pocket of sunshine” running through my head for probably the next three days. No issues though!
Enjoying the everyday from Annapolis…
Thanks again. Sending you smiles.
-Jennifer (Tallcurlygirly)
Oh, how fun to play on the beach! I have played on the beach but was young and don’t remember.
I am glad your girls get to enjoy it!!
Thanks for sharing
I love reading your posts. They make me think of childhood and good times. Lainey is definitely a sprite, and I bet when she was born, the fairies snuck in and sprinkled her with their magic dust. I can just imagine them flitting around her and smiling at her beauty. You have the most gorgeous photos and every time you post one of Nella smiling, it makes me giggle and brightens my mood. And I could SO kiss that little baby tummy, yum!
You are an incredible mother and those girls are extremely lucky.
Love your Junebugs! What happy memories your girls will have!
And of course, I have a special place in my heart for summers “up north” searching for Petoskey stones. That what Michigan summers are all about!
Have a great weekend!
My 4yo son, Beckett climbed up beside me as I was coming to the end of this post, right about where Lainey was sleeping with all of her babies. He said “that’s a lot of babies!” Then he saw the sweet pictures of Nella. Beckett said “Thats a pretty baby Momma! she’s not a doll like up there (Lainey’s dolls), she’s PRETTIER than a doll!!” He’s convinced she lives nearby and he needs to meet her so he can kiss on her. At 4 his perception of Wisconsin to Florida is a little skewed, LOL
When you said that summer as a kid was one thing for you, cousins, I got a huge smile because it is the exact thing for me! I immediately wrote my own blog entry and quoted you, just to let you know. I need to go make a summer to do list now!
And Nella has the most beautiful smile! It’s contagious!
Kelle, I never comment because there’s so many I’m sure it would get lost in the shuffle…but I’ve been following (er, stalking) for a few months now and today was the day for the first comment. To THANK YOU because reading these types of posts makes this failure of a housewife embrace her disheveled home. With a little one hanging from each leg, and a lofty goal of a photography career hanging over my head, all my time is sucked. The house suffers. Thankfully I have an supportive husband who kicks the “piles of crap” to the side with me 🙂 I was never this person before and I hope to gain some better control in the future, but in the meantime thanks for helping me to embrace the imperfection. xo
I was just thinking, “I wish there was a new Kelle post.” And as I’m reading it (yay, wishes!), husby walks in and says, “Hey, it’s Nella’s Momma.”
so beautiful, as always.
Love.
Your posts make me want to move to Florida yesterday.
The phot with Lainey bent over on the beach with the bright blue sky is just amazing.
A beautiful post! LOVE seeing pictures of Lainey and Nella smiling…
Summer list update C: Smile at every person I see for one day, check! Wine and cheese tasting event, check! Trip to The Museum of Modern Art, check! Girl’s night out, check! Trip to The Hamptons, check! Have a barbecue in a park, check!
“This is my living faith, an active faith, a faith of verbs: to question, explore, experiment, experience, walk, run, dance, play, eat, love, learn, dare, taste, touch, smell, listen, speak, write, read, draw, provoke, emote, scream, sin, repent, cry, kneel, pray, bow, rise, stand, look, laugh, cajole, create, confront, confound, walk back, walk forward, circle, hide, and seek.” -Terry Tempest Williams
How cool to read that you’ve been to Tawas … that’s where I grew up! I live an amazing, blessed life in Illinois now with my husband & 2 girls (25 mo. apart, already 7 & 9), but we still make it a point to get to the beaches of Tawas at least once a summer! Hope you also remember ice cream cones at Marion’s Dairy Bar … they’re still open and as busy as ever during the summer! Thank you for sharing your family, your stories, your beautiful photographs, and your gift of words with the web-world. God bless your family. Julie
What am I doing in Canada? It snowed here last week. Yes SNOWED and today the rain clouds are giving us a balmy 10 degrees celsius.
I look at your life with the vivid colors, and blue everywhere! Up here blue is rare and water that you can actually swim in is a novelty. You make me want to move or at the very least take my kidlets on a vacation! Don’t get me wrong- there is a rustic mountain/prairie beauty up here but I am always inspired and refreshed by your words.
Your blog is an Oasis. I started reading it for Nella’s story but I kept reading because not only are your anecdotes to your gals and life positive, But your life just shows me how unique each existence is. A whole new world of discovery lies in your blogdem and I love the new perspectives.
Thanks for that:)
There’s nothing else to say but…I LOVE YOUR BLOG! Seriously, I look forward to every single post you write. I was scrolling through my dashboard, crossing my fingers, and hoping that there’d be a little of that Kelle magic, just waiting to be read. And then I saw this post. And I literally yelled to my mom, “Kelle Hampton wrote a new post!” I love seeing and reading the beauty you have and are creating. You rock. You inspire me every single day. I am so glad that you’re blogging. Thanks for being so real and open and incredible.
Just another blogger in this big, beautiful world,
–Hannah
Hey Brandy,
Not sure if you’ll see this, but don’t give up! You say you felt a bit proud, so even if you just write for yourself it’s a nice thing to do. You’ll find the little scrap one day decades after breast feeding is over and be so glad you did.
The things we want to say are so much more important than the words we choose to say them.
Yeah!!! Just about to go to bed (late) and thought, oh well I’ll just check.. and this was here! So I pushed the boat out, cracked open a can of caffeine free diet coke and now I can go to bed spirits raised, and faith in managing to make my own summer list come true reinforced!
What could be nicer than being able to walk from your house to the beach? I guess being able to walk to a beach where the weather is so gorgeous! You are lucky, but I never begrudge you any of that because I know that you know it, and appreciate it, and celebrate it! And that it is the really big things that make you happiest.
I think that is maybe why when we all read your posts we go away feeling love for you and feeling more positive about our own situations even if they are not so good at the moment. That and the fact that you clearly have such a determination to enjoy life that I think we sense that you would always try and make the best of things and improve your life wherever you were in it. And maybe you make some of us think we can do the same…
By the way, that water looks so clear and perfect. As for the tar balls, well they clearly reckoned without ‘the Kelle Hampton effect’ on Florida tourism…
Also, when I read this post it suddenly reminded me of something I got for my nieces recently which I think you would like – it is small and light so I’d be happy to send it to your PO box if it is ready. If it is not going to be ready for a while I could give you the name and see if you can get it in America?? I’ll check back here when I can or check the contact page.
Crikey, I’m even later to bed now.
ps apparently ‘A tidy desk is the sign of an empty mind’…maybe the same for houses?!
Oh that senior photo is the best. We’ll be in the sea together, you and me.
I have been wondering if you’d mention the oil mess down there. I am happy you aren’t having to see it even though we will all be living with it for a long time. Those waters sure are blue. Dang, it’s beautiful.
Love Lainey in bed with her babes. And, I so know what you mean when you say you saw her as a baby for a moment. I have those all the time. Oh, our first borns!
And then there’s the second borns. They’re pretty great too.
xo
Oh how the paci pic melts me.
My favorite memory of summer as a kid – flashlight tag with the other neighborhood kids. The chigger and mosquito bites afterward were not fun, but man, did we have a BLAST those summer evenings.
I’m a list maker too – and I find myself having the same conversations with my husband as to what we should do more of. We don’t always accomplish everything that we endeavor to do, but we manage to scratch a couple things off the list here and there.
Love the pic of Lainey asleep with all her dolls. It reminds me of my son asleep with his books strewn all around him. I was (and still am) an avid reader and I’m so happy that he loves books so much already!
And Nella – that last pic is priceless.
Thanks for another fantastic post!
Your pictures are so beautiful! I love your golden girl on the beach! My heart jumped when I saw the corner ice cream store…I used to go there as a kid! My grandparents used to have a condo in Naples and we would visit them and walk to the beach, and I think we used to sun and play somewhere near where you were!
It has been years since I have been there…and now I hope to take my babies!
Thank you for your summer time inspiration!
Rebecca
Oh I wish a trip to the beach here was just another day at the beach. I haven’t been to one in forever. It’s on my summer list for sure!
Just let me say, summer sure looks good on your girls. True blue Florida girls!
AH! Kelle, I can’t stop watching this youtube video. It’s so funny.
That last picture of Nella smiling…it’s the best! I love to spend time with my little ones individually. It’s such a special treat for both of us. My Henry calls them “mommy days.”
**Oh, we love airplane rides too! Great minds must think alike because I posted two photos of my Charlie getting an airplane ride today…**
Great post Kelle, thank you!
your blog is like reading the best book ever, only lucky me, it never ends!! at least, it better not!
hope you have lots more wonderful summer adventures…
Mint chocolate chip ALWAYS tastes better in the summer 🙂
That Nella is such a pretty little doll. That last picture made me smile.
Happy June!
Love Lainey’s saggy little swimsuit bottoms…
and her mint chocolate chip icecream with blue bows in her hair.
I love your bed. It is so beautiful and flow-ey.
I love baby Nella playing airplane and your feet against hers.
And her smile. It always brightens my day. Love it!
(By the way, I’m gonna get that book… been looking for it at Half Priced Books, but guess I need to make a trip to Barnes and Noble.)
Ohh…summer fun! The ice blue ocean and beach and of course mint chip ice cream…sounds like heaven to me! 😉 Love the pics of your little lovelies! They are precious! Happy Summer, Kelle!
~Deanna
Beautiful post! Loving every picture and longing for our summer to arrive.
Loving your lists and loving being part of our life….annd watching your kids grow…
All i have to say is another beautiful post. and i was at work today and waited on a family with a daughter with DS and she was older, but just watching how the family reacted together made me think of you lainey, nella, and your family and how special you all are. I sense the special connection you have with your childre.
Honestly, at work i watch parents with their children and how they yell, and belittle this children by calling them wierd and annoying and think “o my good kelle hampton would never treat her children this way”. honestly i really think that, and it’s also scary at some points thinking i base other adults behaviors off of your parenting, but then i sit for a minute and realize what a rock star of a parent you are and how your children will grow to appreciate you instead of resent you in life. You Kelle are an aweseome role model as not only a parent an on-looker of a wanting to be stay at home mom. 🙂 have a great weekend with your babies
Kelle, your beaches are beautiful!!
I love that Brett is taking photos – yay Brett! One of my darling’s few flaws is that he almost never thinks to take photos himself, I always have to remind him. And for some reason, that has the same effect on me as getting flowers after you mentioned you’d like some… lol!
And I really love the last pic of Nella – she’s a sweet soul!
Donna from NZ
Kelle, i would do anything for your life.. words are never enough.

Love the tunes, and the Easy A clip, and you and your family’s shining faces! Your blog is my happy place!
Hello – are you sure you don’t secretly work for the Florida tourist board? Seriously every time I read your blog it makes me want to pack up ad go there! My spent alot of time there as a child and I want my children to experience the same!! Ohhh but it’s so so far away from here! Oh well. I love the bed shots – my kids love it when I change the bed too…they love crawling under the fresh new sheets as I shake the duvet in. These are the things…the simple pleasures!

I have been following your blog since the birth of Nella. I have cried with you and smiled and laughed. I work with special needs children in mainstream school and recently had the privilege of working with a child with Downs who brightened my day every day.
I have just been diagnosed with breast cancer and started chemo this week. Your blog is a highlight in my day. Please continue to love your children and treasure every moment with them – you are an awesome Momma. You have so many more days of sunshine to come
Anne (from England )
Gorgeous post Kelle…it took me all the way back to my childhood growing up in Australia – I think we could go head to head with you guys for beautiful beaches!
The girls, as always, divine. You are a lucky mummy….and they are lucky, lucky girls to have such a wonderful mummy. -x-
Oh wow, in that last picture Nella looks like her sister’s clone!!
Kelle, I always read your posts with a smile on my face. I can’t help it, looking at Lainey and Nella’s sweet faces, and your beautiful photos of what my family calls “doing life”.
But when I get to one of Nella full-on grinning, like the last image in this post … without fail, seeing that sweet happy face, I start to laugh right along with her. That smile is so utterly contagious. What a special girl!
Love from Maine! ♥
OK, Thank you Kelle, you’ve inspired me to have this very conversation with my husband – make a wonderful list of things to do this summer…we’ve been stressed to the gills and I think this very thing will get us a little bit closer again…also, I think YOU need to write a book of 15,000 things to be happy about 🙂
Your beach pictures always blow me away! Do you have “go to” settings that you use when you are taking photos on the beach when the sun is at full force??
I’m lovin’ Lainey’s one-size-too-big swimsuit that falls of one shoulder and has a little saggy-butt!

i love this post! those beach pictures make me SO happy! and mint choc chip ice cream is my FAVOURTIE!
and i love lainey sleeping on your big beautiful bed with her dollys… PRECIOUS!
xo
You are raising a loving, caring momma just like you – Lainey snuggled in with her babies proves it! And I can’t get enough of Nella’s smiles – Kate now has 2 lower teeth so we have left toothless grin land and are in lower bunny grins! Just as cute but it shows she is growing up and I want her to be my babe forever!
Thanks for the book suggestion. Going to spend next week waiting for it to arrive at my office.
Gonna leave it casually on my desk, in hopes to inspire more positivity and happy thinking around here!
All of your pretty photos inspired me to walk to the grocery store yesterday and buy myself pink Gerbera daisies yesterday. Just walking in this morning to my office was a treat.
Life should be uplifting.
Continue to inspire!
We live in Michigan right now, for about another month. I grew up here and love love love Tawas. Some of my best memories are taking trips there. My husband and I take our kids there now. It is totally something I’m gonna miss when we move to TN.
Have a great summer!
Barbara
Ohhh, this post gets me excited for our Florida vacation!! We start our drive down on Sunday…leaving from Ohio. I’m looking forward to seeing my three sprites ‘frolicking in the sea’ 🙂 And watching them make those summer memories with their cousins since we will be making the trip with my brother, sis-in-law and their four kids 🙂 Yes, Kelle Hampton, I sooo ‘get’ you and it makes my day! Thanks again for being so terrific!
Oh how your post makes me wish I lived near the ocean! I suppose the trade off is the rolling VA mountains and quiet lakes… but I’m ready for the beach now!!
Thank you for “taking” me on your beach outing… I had a great time just reading about it :o)
Kelle! Is that beach Marco Island?! We have a condo there – been going since I was a child! We will be there in November! Would LOVE to say hi, if it is?! PS. I got my Popina Swimwear with your discount – got the suit yesterday! Thanks for emailing me back!
i love that your child-like excitement about summer is totally addictive and inspiring. i wish i could have the time that you have with your girls! it’s hard as a working mom to do but the precious moments i spend with my 3 year old boy for the next 3 or 4 months will be things made for scrapbooks!! We have a little girl on the way and i want to enjoy every moment of my “only child” for the time that we have. You inspire me to do that!
THANK YOU!!!
love it! love your beaches….can’t wait for our trip to FL in 14 days (yes, counting them!) where are you in that beach date w/Lainey? i want to visit that beach! lol it is so BEAUTIFUL!! oh..and Lainey sleeping w/her babies, I love it too! my Arianna has the bitty baby and the zapf baby that are both laying there w/her! <3 them, wish our girls could meet, they’d be 2 peas in a pod! oh…and your bed…you had me literally LOL! So happy to read a new post this am! thank you Kelly…(even tho you have NO idea who i am! lol I enjoy your blog!) ~ Christy
How I love your blog! Your writing is just beautiful and the pictures are perfect!
I LOVE the pic of Lainey will her babies all around her. I have a similar pic of my daughter, Lily, when she was around Lainey’s age. Except Lily is SURROUNDED with stuffed animals. She has always had a thing for stuffed animals … couldn’t care less for baby dolls (which is hard for me to understand – I loved my babies as a little kid!).
Oh, and I’m loving your hubby’s Gator hat!!! Goooo Gators! Everyone in my family went to UF … we are HUGE Gator fans. :o) Can’t wait to see how Tebow does in the NFL!
Enjoy your summer day in Florida! (We haven’t hit summer quite yet in N. Virginia .. just a few more weeks until school is out!)
That beach is to DIE for!!! My grandparents used to winter on Marco Island and I think a Florida Beach in the Gulf is like no other.
I live on the Long Island Sound and our beach is just utter crap compared to what you have, you lucky girl!
What a wonderful day with your babies – as always! Have a great weekend 🙂
I love your blog!!!!
I read it every day and oh my, your bed is gorgeous!
I have to tell you, we have a 4-year-old and a 10-month-old…and we call our baby “Sisterbear”, too.
(((HUGS))
It is often in the times when my 3 yr old’s hair is wet and clinging to her face that I see her baby face again for a moment…I suppose all of us moms have those moments and will probably continue to till they’re 25. Or beyond 🙂
I was wondering if your beaches were affected. I hope they stay clean. Love the senior citizens party- I hope to have a big group of friends to “party” with when I’m gray 🙂
Funny video, haven’t heard of that movie.
i absolutely LOVE your blog. Im a new reader. Your girls are precious. I have a 2.5 year old little girl. I am 100% head over heels in love with her and many of the things you do with your girls, we do together too. Color and get messy with chalk. play airplane in the bed. my nightstand resembles yours. Your photos are amazing.
Thank you for making me smile each morning.
Found this quote today on one of the blogs I follow and thought it fit perfectly here with these scruptious pictures of summer fun!!!
“Realize that life, not stuff, is what matters. Objects are just objects — if you lose them, if they get stolen or destroyed … it’s not a big deal. They’re just objects — not your life. Your life is the series of moments that is steaming through your consciousness right now, and how you use those moments and what you fill them with is what truly matters, not what you fill your home with. At the end of this short journey, you’ll look back and remember your experiences, the people you loved and who loved you back, the things you did and didn’t do. Not the stuff you had.”

Love the posts and pictures! Thanks for always brightening my day! Your sister does a great job of that too! PS, I’m wavin back.
OMG Lainey’s Droopy swim drawers have got to be the cutest thing ever.
I love your blog, I read it all the time. Your girls are so beautiful (as is there moomy) and your pictures are awesome.

14000 Things to Be Happy About is one of my FAVORITE books. I’ve had my copy for 15 years, and I refer to it daily! Did you know there’s a new one? 14000 NEW Things…must obtain a copy of that one asap!
As usual, your photos are gorgeous, just like your family. And oh, to live near the beach!
Happy Summer!
ooh my.. Now I am wishing I lived in Florida again.. With a pool & beach nearby.. It seems like the perfect way to spend summer with your kids. After living in the north for many many years, I’m not quite sure I could adjust to the heat again though..
And I LOVE your bed!! Heaven!
Like everyone else, I have been following your blog for months thanks to a friend who told me about you! You’re inspiring! We have also made a summer ‘to do’ list since we live in the St. Louis, MO area there’s so much to do we’ve never taken advantage of it all!
You rock and thanks for sharing!
My God those pictures of saggy swim bottoms just crack me up!
You are inspiring. Lady, you know how to light a spark in people! Oh, and P.s. Didn’t know anyone who loves the same book as me! really, who doesn’t love “rolling in the hay” and “eggs benedict”.. Love your blog.. keep it up 🙂
Oh yes! Please sign me up for Kelle Hampton summer camp!!!! So-much-fun… just how summer should be.
Today is my Quinn’s 4th birthday. Check out my blog post if you can – kwqr.blogspot.com .
Time does fly, but we are lovin’ up every minute of it.
Kate
So pretty! I want to go to the beach!!!
love tawas…and petoskey stones – but in the years i spent growing up, my summers were spent on douglas lake, just 15 miles south of mackinaw…and never once did i find a petoskey stone on the beach 🙁 but the hours and hours of searching the shores of the straits….priceless memories!
WOW! Inspiring!
You are so lucky Kelle! Your kids are beautiful, and so are you! It must be so nice to have the beach nearby, here we have to travel to southern-europe contries to get what you have just outside your door 🙂 Hope you have a nice summer, enjoy yourself with your beautiful kids and husband! Lost of hugs from Norway
Check out these monster bubbles!! Love the post.

I love reading your Blog. Everytime I read your new posts, I am always so inspired and filled with joy. You manage to put into words (and pictures) the beauty of life & motherhood. It’s always a treat to read your blog.
Yeay for summer!

Not sure if you have ever heard of Story People, but today’s story TOTALLY reminded me of you! You are soooo inspiring.
Here’s the Story of the Day:
carries a lot of suitcases but all of them are empty because she’s expecting to completely fill them with life by the end of this trip & then she’ll come home & sort everything out & do it all again
Oh and I meant to say….that last picture of Nella…smiling, makes me ask, can I have her please!!!! OH what sweetness!!!!!!!!
I’m spending my summer at the beach vicariously through your blog! You have a charmed life and a beautiful family!
Confession– i was at a used bookstore and saw “14000 things to be happy about” for one dollar- thought of you and snatched it right up!
So I didn’t have time to read any of the other comments but I just have to say this…Lainey and Latte could sooooooooo re make the coppertone water babies label. Your girls are beautiful and so are your pictures and words. My 3 year old son comes running to the computer when I am on it and asks are you looking at “my gill?” aka his girl haha he thinks Lainey and where she lives looks like an awesome place to hang out. He enjoys looking at the blog as much as I love reading it! I love it!
you.are.gorgeous <3
Also, your family 🙂
Love all of your beach pics, but the very last one of Nella, priceless. She is exuding love, good job, mama.. isn’t it a great feeling 🙂
I just started a new blog about raising my two young boys, very inspired by your site and greatful a friend led me to you.
i have to tell you i just LOVE the music on your blog. i just used it for music while i worked 😉
you are my ipod
Wow, your Lainey and my Audrey could be BFFs. Our newest phrase is, ‘Ex-CUSE me, PEEEAAASSSS hush it!’ So polite yet so sassy. And every.single.doll that we have in this house is naked. I buy all of these adorable clothes for her Bitty Baby and she remains naked just like Lainey’s. Aren’t they too funny?
Well, here’s my confession! After reading this post….I drove out, and I bought my own mint chip cone. Yes, I ate the whole thing and I loved every bite.
Good LORD I love your photography! Reading this blog is so much fun!
xox

I just don’t think I could love you anymore, and I don’t even know you in real life!
Your posts are so poetic and filled with wonder and imagination. Like reading a book, makes me feel all sunny and loving inside.
You’re such a blessing.
my faves: be kyet
the descriptions of your nightstands
and the fab little video clip
Love the clip, love the pictures! This post inspired two things for me. First, THANK YOU so much for giving me the theme of JUNEBUGS for my daughter’s 1st birthday party!!!!!! I couldn’t believe I was doing ladybugs like everybody else, but the little bug I designed for the invitations could very well be a June Bug and she was born June 16th – so PERFECT!! It was bothering me even before I saw the episode on Tori & Dean! 😉 Secondly, I might have overdone it a TAD in some people’s opinion, but tonight my 3yo son and I laid on the back porch and watched airplanes and stars til….11:00. :-/ But you know what, he had so much to tell me and I’m the Mom and how many nights are there going to be like that? It’s his Friday night too! 😉 So thank you!!
can i just say that the video cracked me up!
the rest of your post put a smile on my face and that is why i come here. ♥
anonymous this is a happy blog?leave the paci and bathing suit alone okay? if you don’t have anything nice to say.. blah, blah,,jeez..lighten up…
You capture the beauty and wonder of summer in every word, every photo…so inspiring. You are truly a light in this blog world, bringing lots of joy and reminding us what life SHOULD be about.
Just thought you should know. 🙂
Looks like you guys had a great “date”!!! And your bed looks AMAZING!!!! Its like anything you dream of there could be possible. Can’t wait to see more of your list get crossed off!
Yes, I’d like to place an order for about 25 happy, smiling faces of Lainey & Nella – Just wallet size, please. I can then put them up everywhere – bathroom mirror, fridge, doors, car, desk, and have them smiling at me all day! Just name your price, mama! Or I suppose poster size will work, too. OH, and I do need those ASAP!!
Ohmigosh, Lainey asleep among the dolls – how precious!
My childhood holds similar magic that I want to share with my kiddos. We used to walk down to the nearby beach and catch jellyfish, pick tall reeds and wave them around like flags or wands, go to evening bonfires. At home we would spend hours in the woods creating “rooms” in the clearings, making up all sorts of stories.
There were 5 of us kids – one of them my twin brother – and we created “star search” and made posters and put on plays for friends and family. My dad would drive around with all us hanging out of the trunk of his celica – can’t do that nowadays! We would get doughboys, old-fashioned sodas, and long-jump on the beach. *sigh* Childhood has its own smell.
I want your bed!
Last minute comment…but we need a little butt fertilizer to beef up those cheeks, she’s got a saggy suit there, but adorable! So glad you continue to choose joy, to look at life through the brightest lens, to stock the ingredients of happiness in your pantry. June is lush in Michigan…clouds and showers each weekend it seems, but there is no spoiling a weekend, just because it’s a weekend. I had the awesome privilege of presiding at the memorial celebration of the oldest Ziegfeld Follies Girl today–106 rich and radiant years of living with the expectation the best was yet to be! Ahhh, that is the secret–savor today but anticipate tomorrow! Loving you here, there and everywhere between!
You take very delightful photos. I like your little girl in the yellow swim suit, and the senior citizens in the water. Teresa sent me over here from her blog.
I already read this post, but today when I opened your blog to check it tunes started playin where tunes have not played before! Wheee! Are these new or have the other 2 puters I normally use just not picked up on the player…? Hmmmm… Anyway I now have a new favorite song and I thought you should know! 😀
Thanks!! I needed somethin new. (Everybody-Ingrid M.)
Happy Saturday!

I’m a new blog reader. I can’t remember exactly how I stumbled across your blog, but I fell in love right away. Your little girls are beautiful!! I love your pictures and how real you are in your writing. Thanks for letting me lurk into your life 🙂
ps. I live in Vancouver BC and I`m so totally jealous of your beaches and pools!
Wow.
Your writing style is great and your photos are AMAZING. Amazing.
I am a new follower of your blog and I can’t wait to read more!

I adore your photos! Your babies are precious! We have a super sweet June going on here too! Be blessed!
hi kelle – i wanted to let you know about my sister-in-laws etsy site.. she makes the BEST blankies and loveys in the world. I truly believe that nella needs a lovey. she’s on esty, search for bubbies blankies. i also agree how awesome it is that lainey doesn’t know that a day at the beach is as amazing as it is, and i love to see nella’s beautiful smile. i have just now been able to capture that beautiful smile that is zachary’s – i hope that our extra chromosome beauties will be able to meet some day. j
Our June so far has been very gloomy, in more ways than one.
First, the weather. It’s typical “June Gloom” out here in southern CA…with cold, overcast mornings that really don’t heat up too much in the afternoon. It will start getting sunny towards the end of the month…and then we are ON until the beginning of October with the heat! Looking forward to it! It’s also been gloomy around here due to my losing our newest little one at 11 weeks gestation. We are all so sad over here. It happened on June 8th. This is the first time we have lost a baby, after having had 8 children. I’ve been so sad, but coming over to your blog helps to lift my spirits. Life is just so beautiful. It is full of joys and sorrows. The joys are made even more joyful because we have experienced the sorrows. I realize that, and I know we are going to be okay in time. This little one will be missed terribly, but our family will be okay. We will have more joys in the future. We will celebrate everyday together. We will be thankful… and enjoy the small things in life that make life so precious =)
Kelle~ What beach are you at in the pictures you posted? We love the Gulf Coast and are sad to think we may have to change our vacation location this year because of the oil spill~ Ft. Walton may not be able to avoid the oil…& we crave the white sand and emerald colored water as in your pictures. Glad your beaches are still beautiful!! Do you mind sharing what the name of the beach is that you pictured? Thanks!!! Love from Ohio
Thank you for sharing. I have started a blog which has been inspired by you. Living in the moment, not for the moment, celebrating the beauty of life. I am so blessed to realize there are others like me who are amazed by the little things, who see joy in others, and who days of just sitting back and saying “man am i lucky”. Kelle you are an inspiration. Thank you
I don’t remember how I stumbled upon your blog but ever sense I’ve been working my way through all your old entries. I’m 21 and just finishing up school art school in Portland and I live far away from my grandparents who raised me, sometimes the emptiness of being so far away from them can be crippling.
I just want you to know how much I find comfort in your words of family and love, your courage and honesty. As a girl who never experienced the conventional love of a mother and father due to abuse and absence I have dreams of a nest of love.
Unfourtantly due to health issues I recently found out I may not be able to have my own children. It is a pain that has sunken my heart these past few days. I hope though to adopt and hope to rain as much buckets of love on them as you do on your beautiful gifts.
Thank you so much.
Ahh, I’m horribly addicted to reading about you and your beautiful family – so I thought the only reponsible thing to do was tell all my friends about you, so they can be horribly addicted to you as well!
Not sure if you’re into these things, but I’ve given you the ‘You Blow My Mind’ Blog award: http://bmidontcare.blogspot.com/2010/06/catch-up-time.html
An amazing summer tapestry — what a great way to describe that potpourri of memories.
Kudos to you for recreating those wonderful, simple summer memories for your kids!!
The beach looks so beautiful…at least you have the water when it’s hot! Here in the land locked Texas panhandle…we just stay inside!!! 🙂 Your girls are soo cute and I just love Nella’s infectious smile!! Thanks for inspiring me to have a great summer!!!
Hello:)
I am a girl from Norway who read your blog. I think it is a great blog, and also with many nice pictures. Creds two you!
You also have very beautiful kids and I completely melt when I see them.
Greetings from Norway Lise:)
I keep checking for a new entry. My husband jokes that I want to be your friend. Live 3 hours from Naples, and thinking a visit to Isle of Capri might have to be on our summer list. Love your writing, pictures, joy of life! I have 3 kiddos, and am constantly taking pictures of the joy in my life. Love it!
You need to add berry picking to your list. I just took my littles this weekend and they LOVED it! There’s nothing better than sweet berry juice running down their little hands as the pluck the rip fruit from the bushes and pop them into their mouths. Blueberries and Blackberries are in season right now. Go to http://www.pickyourown.org to find a farm near you.
there is so much happy in this world isn’t there?
I love randomly reading the comments on here almost as much as the blog. You stir up such a sweet sense of humanity among so many. I wrote tonight in my blog (which I do for my family) about how I need to get over needing to have the neatest house and gave you and your father (in one of his comments where he said he wishes his living room had one of the kids’ toys in it) part of the credit for my inspiration. I have had several aha moments about it lately, but among the inspirations is definitely YOU! I called it Getting over the House and Enjoying the Home! Thank you for helping me do that.
🙂 Sarah from Fredericksburg, Va
loooove those pictures of your sweetheart on the beach! made me excited for our first family vaca coming up in a week. yaaaaaaay!
I have been reading for a few months now and am convinced that we would be fast friends. For real! You have a stunningingly (is that a word?) beautiful family.
L.O.L. that clip was hilarious!! i’m sure we’ve all been there before!
thanks again for your inspiration! i’ve never heard of that book. there are so many great books out there but i always make excuses that i never have time to read. that is something i need to add to my list. read more books.
i just ordered a copy as well as the wishlist and 8,279 words of wisdom :o)
thanks again chica…for your beautiful and inspiring words and photos. i’m enjoying my beautiful story as well as reading about yours.
oh and thank you for all of the awesome music you play, we def have the same taste in music.
xo
Hurray for a Lanie doll! 😉
Fun photos, I love your blog.
Your pictures make me so excited for beach days. Soon! Loving the “airplaine” pictures. My son loves that too.
That last picture of Nella is just perfection.

I love your blog!!! It inspires me to do more… have more fun! Question: do you just lather the girls in sunscreen every morning. I have had the same wrist length smimsuit on my baby all year trying to keep her skin from the sun, but it looks like yours do just fine.
Dear Sandy Sally,
I come here when I need to see beauty. I come here when I need sweet words, beautiful music and something to make me smile… and you know, I always get what I came for.
Thank you.
Love,
The Prairie Hen In NE
Love Nella’s smile!!! She’s such a cutie! We need some baby love in our Wordless Wednesdays on http://www.alwayshappylife.com!
Hi Kelle! Wow, I so love your blog. . .don’t know exactly if it is your writing or your wonderful pictures that draw me here. . . or maybe it is your sweet little ones that tug at my heart wanting for more. Thank you for making my day so many times! Love, love, love your blog!!! 🙂
LOVE this post… I wish I can live your life even for just one day. Such an inspiration!
I read your posts and marvel at your photos… but I’ve never posted. But today, as I was going back as looking at the posts I’ve missed I see in the second-to-last photo that your husband is wearing a Gators hat – and now, I love your family just a little bit more. Go Gators!! :o)
Ahhh, to know my bedroom is a mirror image….the piles of “crap” that have to be shifted around…..at least I’m learning to enjoy life in the meantime everything is disorderly. It’s not an easy change. But time with my “little” is worth it.
