Glady’s Apron

June 3, 2008 By Kelle

to my jo-jo…
i wear her apron today. the fact that you gave it to me makes me feel so loved. i think of her when i wear it…and of you…and of what it must feel like to live without a mother whom you loved so much. i wish i knew you better ten years ago on this day. i would have held your hand. i would have cried with you. and i wish i could have known her…the woman who gave me my friend. i think i’ll make a cake tonight. yes, i will make a cake. and i will wear glady’s apron when i make it. i love you.

Tears streaming down my face right now. Thank you. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for loving my mom even though you were never able to meet her. She would have SO loved you. Send me a pic of the cake you make. She would have been so proud of the cake you made for Lainey’s birthday. Someday we’ll have to sit and go thru pics of all her wedding cakes together. I haven’t looked at them in a long time. And the pic of you in the apron is divine. So loving you right now.

I wonder how many cakes that apron saw created, how many times it wiped flour from her face, how many times it heard her sigh with relief when she untied the apron–done for the day. Kelle, twirl around the kitchen a couple times…be glad, no, be gladdy…no, be gladdier than you were before. Aprons connect us with another day, a day we need to remember when kitchens were the command centers of homes and families and their wearers ruled their worlds with spatula sceptres.

Kelle, thanks for posting such a beautiful tribute and for being such a great friend to my sister-in-love. (sister-in-law sounds too legal.) Love you, Jo!
