happy birthday, my sweet little blog (and a present…for you)

December 8, 2008 By Kelle

i started this sweet little blog exactly one year ago.

…and as i blow out the imaginary candles on enjoying the small things’ sweet little cake (carrot with cream cheese frosting), i’m thinking…

…that as cliche as it sounds, having this blog has changed me in so many ways.

when i was in seventh grade, i wanted to be a columnist for the chicago tribune so much that i made a fake chicago tribune letterhead with my name on it and (illegally) reproduced it. then i spent $12 i didn’t have on a mug from the chicago tribune store and used it every day…i still have it. i felt like a journalist.

and i am one in my own little world. documenting our lives and capturing all this love i feel for the big world and the people in it with little words and pictures. and by doing so, i have found that…

…i love life so much more.

in a year, i have been challenged, through writing and photographing, to paint the good. and then when i paint good, i see more good. and then there’s more to paint. and more to see. and it’s this great big beautiful cycle of…well, enjoying the small things.

and when i look back and read over all the stories, all the love and all the growth i’ve made this year, i’m so glad i do this. this blogging thing.

and this unspeakable gift of motherhood? it’s an honor. a dream. and not documenting it…capturing every moment…bottling it up to save forever…would be irresponsible.

so thank you, little blog, for all the joy you’ve brought me and for providing me the canvas to paint our world. what a beautiful world it is.

you’ve challenged me to see the world in new ways and to capture what i see.

you’re my treasured notebook of all the good. all the little things that fill our lives with so much joy. and all the moments that, sewn together, make up this wonderful gift of life.

and to all those that listen to what i have to say: thank you. this blog has brought me closer to those of you i love so far away and has introduced me to new friends i haven’t (yet) met. your comments make me smile. your words inspire me.

so, happy birthday, little blog. happy birthday to you.

and a little giveaway. a little thank-you for reading.

leave a comment…and tell me five blessed little things you’re enjoying, and i’ll randomly draw a comment and ship you a little hand-painted treasure for your tree.
well, two.
this one:

and one for your family like this one:

mine tonight:
my chicago tribune mug. the security in holding brett’s hand. neighborhood christmas lights. the blessed solitude of waking up before everyone else. showering at night and sliding into clean sheets.

see, that was easy.

oh, one more. loving someone so much, it hurts.

…enjoying the birthday things.

I am teary over this post. I am so happy to be part of your community. And, we will meet. I predict sooner than later.

I could list many, of course, but here are the first five that pop into my noggin’.

    1. The joy on Margot’s face tonight as she pieced together several steps into walking. She’s off.

    2. Nursing her in the morning. Andy’s making coffee, it’s dark outside and just us in bed. And a 75-pound dog whose tail is thumping on the comforter.

    3. The new baseboard in my house!

    4. My girlfriends. How’d I get so dang lucky?

    5. Knowing that even though I have been too busy and felt a bit disconnected from my relationship for a few weeks, all it took was a walk and an afternoon cuddling on the sofa and I was in love all over again with my man who is just the swellest guy around.

    My five things . . .

A husband who loves all of me all the time no matter what . . . who enjoys my company and would rather have a night in with me than a night out with any one else . . . whose hugs are the cure to anything . .

A son whose heart is sewn to mine . . who I love more than all the other things put together . . . whose laugh can make me cry and whose cry can make me laugh . . . who has his whole life ahead of him . . . and I get to be a spectator of who knows what . .

Parents, In-laws, siblings, cousins, grandparetnts and family in general that love us and make us who we are . . . who are always there when we need them . . . who are weird and funky and definitely not normal . . . but perfect anyway . .

Friends . . oh the best friends in the world . . who listen to me . . cry with me . . . laugh with me . . are supportive . . and just plain ole wonderful, amazing, fantastic women whom I love deeply

The little things too . . . morning coffee, a warm worn old sweatshirt, cute-butt jeans, comfy shoes, my camera, pretty jewelry, when my hair behaves, an opportunity to shave my legs (ha), reading a good book, watching sunset, living in this beautiful part of the world . . . . and much more . . .

    2. Having a beautiful and successful daughter who is a wonderful wife and mother and a loving and successful son who lives entirely too far away for me.
    3. Our beautiful Ms. Madeline who came into our lives and hearts in May. She is everything we ever could have hoped for . . and more. .
    4. Our gift of faith and love given to us by our 89 and 82 year old mothers who are still so much a part of our lives.
    5. Still being able to be a small part of my “adopted” daughter’s life thru pictures and beautiful words each morning.

    Hi Kelle,

This is Lena, the New Yorker, again. I love this post so here are five little things that I enjoy:

-seeing pure joy on my daughters faces when I walk into their room after they wake up
    – their laughter when I kiss them in their bellies
    – curling up with my husband on a couch under a blanket while watching a movie and having a glass of milk with a chocolate chip muffin
    – spending time with my Mom and sister and knowing how lucky I am to have them
    – holding my husband’s hand and still feeing my heart flutter

By the way: I loved your tradition of listing little things that you enjoy very much and decided to implement a similar tradition in our family – so now every night when we go to bed, my husband and I name one little thing that we are thankful for that day!

Happy Birthday to your blog – I love reading it!

I love reading your blog…I love seeing how another mother loves her child so much. What a blessing!

The 5 things I am thankful for:

~ My husbands strong devotion and our 6 1/2 years together.

~ My ‘almost twins’ that are 3 months apart and the love that I never knew could be so strong before them.

~ Blogging, sometimes I wonder if I could make it through the tough times without my blog! I love being able to share my adorable AG and EE and our family adventures!

~ The support of our parents as a couple that had infertility troubles and decided to adopt.

~ And finally the friends we have made in our current town. Strong friendships are such a blessing and as a married couple we didn’t have those until the last year and a half!

I could go on and on, but you asked for five. I would love to win your ornaments, they are beautiful! Thank you for the chance! Merry Christmas

Ohhhh.. I really enjoyed this post! I VERY MUCH look forward to when I have children and can experience all the love you ladies talk about. šŸ™‚

    Five things I appreciate:

    – My wonderful extended family. I can’t wait to see them all during Christmas. I don’t get to spend nearly enough time with them.

    – Craftiness! Over the past year I have jumped head first into many crafty things: card making, knitting, etc. I am loving it so much!

    – The whole of blogging. I did not know such a world existed until this year! How did I not know about this for so long?! I have been toying with the idea of start a blog (for quite a while now)… but I think several comments on this post just helped me make up my mind! šŸ™‚

    – My great, long-time bf. He knows me so well and provides me with so much support in all that I do.

    – My health. I enjoy the challenge of eating heatlhy and simply love that feeling you get when leaving the gym after a hard workout.

Those ornaments are so cute! HHhmm…..Perhaps that will be my next crafty endevour….. šŸ™‚

Reading/looking at In Style magazine, one page at a time, glass of wine, girly movie in the background, alone at home. (extremly rare).

Laughing through tears with my brother.

Reading Christmas cards written to my brother, from my class. Active duty Navy.

Having someone in your life who always chases “the lonelies” away–one who celebrates the details of your being and provides a glad reunion every time you meet.

Having children who are uniquely gifted, fiercely independent and yet create a party every time they gather together.

Having grandchildren who fill your heart with warm, dripping love and make of your life a stage of perpetual grand theatre.

Having an acutely sensitive emotional hard-wiring that both celebrates the highest and happiest moments but also feels the sweet music of the sad sorrows that give resonance to this journey.

Having a faith that is a “real-igion” that anchors the soul in the storms of life, whispers to you that Another loves and knows you completely and looks ahead with you, saying “The Best is Yet to Be!”

I too was directed to your blog from my sisters Tammy and April. I love it and being an emotional person it makes me tear up every day! Here are five things!

    1. My parents who still spoil me even though I am 24 years old and still living with them and attending graduate school.

    2. Getting engaged on Friday Dec. 5th, to the best guy ever, after waiting 8 years! And it was well worth the wait! I look forward to wedding planning and getting married!

    3. My nieces and nephews who let me spoil them and allow me to act like a kid again!

    4. My sisters who keep me grounded and make me feel whole.

    5. My puppy Cooper who I can cry to and tell things too because he doesnt judge me and he licks my tears away and cuddles up against me when I am sad

    Poppa’s Lily Song:

    The moon in the sky is saying Hi to a pretty little face;
The moon in the sky is saying Hi
    to precious Lily Grace.

(In spite of PoppaRik’s soft vocal efforts, gentle rocking, a cozy blanket and a cooperating moon–Lily fiercely refused closing those big beautiful eyes. Sleep was not in her plans when there was a party nearby)

To Dad: My song’s better. Just sayin’.

To Kelly: The judges have reached their verdict and you shall represent one comment and Lily shall represent another.

To Dig: One of your comments stands for Bug. And yes, you are coming. And yes, I thought of that too. And yes, we WILL click…because I have the “If” book, and the “If Book game” immediately trumps all awkwardness or non-click-tatiousness. More to come on that. Seriously…I’m looking at dates after first of the year. Will check on house availability. Jen, you in? We’re plannin’ this thing. We will talk, laugh, drink wine, watch kids, and truly get to know one another for the beauty that lies within.

To all of you beautiful commenters that came out of the woods: I am honored you read this stuff and inspired by your words. Congratulations to new engagements, husbands being home from the war, having family that fills your soul and to everyone who enjoys the small things with me. I love having all these souls to connect with and to be reminded that, amid the headlines…there is so much good in the world. Will draw comment tonight!

Hi. I stumbled across your blog a few weeks ago and it has truly blessed me. I am trying very hard to soak in this Christmas season and everyday life in general, partly b/c your blog reminded me to do it!

    1. Today is our first beautiful mountain snow!
    2. My husband who makes me laugh and works so hard to take care of us.
    3. My baby, who always surprises me and wakes up with kisses for mama.
    4. Reading to Heidi for as long as she wants, listening to her laugh with delight when I pull out one of her favorites.
    5. Trips to the swimming pool (even in winter) and experiencing the water together–teaching her to kick while she lays her head back on my shoulder and points to the pipes in ceiling.

Thanks for this beautiful blog–you are amazingly talented and I always look forward to what you’re going to come up with next!

Beautiful post Kelle. You inspire me in SO many ways! Some things I love and enjoy:

    1. My son. I love that we have created this perfectly, beautifully finished human being. Waking up in the morning and peering over his crib to see a smiling little face brings more joy to my life than I can even put into words.
    2. My husband. He loves me unconditionally, post pregnancy hormones and all:-)
    3. Cold, crisp mornings and a cup of hot tea (with two splenda, a dash of milk and a squirt of honey).
    4. Pepperoni pizza.
    5. All the photo Christmas cards that are arriving in the mail. Love them.

    Five more:

The chance for a second cup of coffee by the Tree and fire before leaving for work.

A Christmas card from a friend you haven’t heard from in a long, long time.

Laughter on the phone from your daughter who finds little particles of joy that lead her through the shadows to a brighter day.

A song that you can sing along to…or at least dance to.

Work you feel makes a difference in life. Today, I will spend time with a young mother, who remains filled with hope and happiness, with daughters at home who need her to be with them, but instead, she fights for her life against a disease determined to take her away.

    Hey K –

Happy Birthday to you and your blog! I love it – and you!

I have thought about celebrating the first year of my blog (which won’t be until next May) and I had to smile when I read what you wrote. My blog has changed my life, too. I just love how it helps me share the lives of others, get inspired about quilting, rubberstamping, and oh so much more. And it has helped me learn about myself more. So if I may say….
What I love and am thankful for…
1 – My daughters, Beth (Joe) and Becky (Scott) and their loving husbands…..
2 – The grandson that is due in April.
    3 – My family, my friends…..
4 – Sophie – my dog – Chloe and Bob my cats.
5 – All Gods blessings. Sometimes I don’t look at it that way, but I am blessed and I am thankful for what I have….and for the struggles along the way – because those struggles (that I hated at the time) made me who I am today.
Thank you, Kelle, for being YOU. You are a cherished part of my life. I love you and yours…….
    Merry Christmas

P.S. – I would love to order an ornament for my tree from you….with “My Little Part of Heaven” on it. It would be a great keepsake that I would cherish forever, symbolic of the growth within me thanks to BlogLand.

My daughter Ally, I miss her everyday she is away at school, but could burst with pride at everything she is doing and all that she has accomplished.

My son Zac, I am so glad that my when my daughter was 8 yrs old I we decided she shouldn’t be an only child and decided to have another child…Zac he makes me laugh everyday.

Strong women in my life, my mom, my sisters and my friends, more than I could have every imagined.

A good husband and great dad, a hard worker who always puts our family first.

Having worked in one of the best professions ever, having been included in the best days ever of most peoples lives…bring new life into the world. Working for one of the finest women I know.
