Happy Bookends

April 4, 2010 By Kelle

My heart is happy.
Because my day has commenced and closed with little moments of goodness like two equally delicious bookends, propping up a smattering of middle chapters that happen to include similar goodness. A Goodness Sandwich, if you will.

Beginning with hot coffee hugged in the perfect mug as we leisurely readied for our day that included…

Our Neighborhood Easter Party

Photobucket

Photobucket

Full of sugary pastels and best-dressed littles holding baskets on the outside and anticipation for egg hunting and candy finding on the inside.

Photobucket

Lainey herded us along all morning, trying to get our butts out the door because she was so excited to see the Easter Bunny. Of course, one sighting of him transformed her innocent excitement to horror movie-like terror. As soon as she saw him through the glass panes of the door, she ran like hell to her daddy.

Photobucket

…and only lifted her head off his shoulder for a glance if she had the door as a barrier.

Photobucket

She kept her hands over her eyes believing that whole If-I-can’t-see-him-maybe-he-can’t-see-me thing. Kids are so funny.

Photobucket

And when, and only when, she was thorougly ensured that the Bunny had left the building, she agreed to venture outside for my favorite part. What is it about egg hunts that make me so freaking high on life?

Photobucket

Maybe it’s the way she works hard to hide her smile. Like she’s way too cool to let you know she’s totally enjoying it all. No, she forces seriousness, tediousness, total focus as she scours the dewy grass for jewel tone hints. But, even through the straight face, the intently masked shy smile, the finger-in-her-mouth concentration, you can see it. …Bliss. And I can’t hide the fact that it just gets me. Her. Spring. Little kids in ruffled dresses and perfectly-parted braids happy squealing and mad-dashing to fill their baskets.

Photobucket

Photobucket

And the little bunny who slept through it all.

Photobucket

She wasn’t quite so frightened of the Easter Bunny so proper introductions were made.

Big Bunny, Little Bunny. Little Bunny, Big Bunny.

Photobucket

And they became fast friends…even though, after I put a baby in his arms for a picture, the Big Bunny looked at me through those giant mesh eyes like he didn’t know what the heck he was doing. I just saw two strange eyes peeking through those huge mesh holes, our gazes met and it was really awkward. I wanted to say, “I see you in there” and I think he wanted to say something maybe along the lines of “I don’t hold babies,” but there were throngs of children around him and if we shared a conversation and the kids heard a recognizable man’s voice squeaking out of the tiny fur hole in the giant bunny costume, I guess the jig is kinda up.
Moral of the story: Giant Costumes for Grown-Ups are kind of freaky.

Photobucket

Needless to say, our morning was perfectly festive. Followed by an intermission of inhaling every breath of heavenly goodness these eight pounds and fifteen ounces of magic gifts me with.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Brett is known for his series of nicknames for his kids. He takes nickname-giving a very serious sport indeed, pondering his choices, making sure they “fit,” sometimes altering them a bit until they are perfect and organically worn-in. Lainey’s “Baby Bee” took a whole year of cultivating (and shortening from Binkywinky to Binkywinks to Binky to Binks to finally, just “Bee”) not to mention the handful of other names she was referred to in the process.

With that said, I’ve been wondering what Nella will be called. She’s all of two months and I’ve been waiting to hear mention of a nickname, but haven’t wanted to badger or pressure the arrival of such name without it happening naturally just the way Daddy likes to do it.
Well, this week, it’s happened. It’s been dropped several times now and, although it’s subject to change I’m sure, she has a Daddy-given name.

He calls her…
Little Present.

Photobucket

…and every time I hear him whisper it to her, it makes me want to cry. What a present she is.

Photobucket
Spring = Bonnet Wearing. Because I love bonnets so very much.

And the last chapters of our day arrived with a beautiful evening with friends sipping plastic cups of beer poolside…

Photobucket

…and an outdoor movie. Lainey was thrilled to drag her pillow outside and curl up under the stars with a blanket, a bag of popcorn and some tiki torch glow for some Saturday night perfection.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

…while Nella slept through the entire thing.

Photobucket

And somewhere between tying my wet hair into a sloppy ponytail this morning to make it out the door on time to satisfy a begging toddler waiting to see the Easter Bunny to settling into patio chairs under the stars to watch my girls experience the cozy joy of watching a movie outside, it arrived again–that feeling of perfect contentment. Because, no matter what stresses lie on our plate, what challenges we face ahead, what unpleasant feelings we temporarily harbor, the Bigger Picture of what really matters? It’s perfect and beautiful and unscathed.

And our conclusion today? After the last chapter, we closed with our pre-bed Easter Eve ritual…putting out the Easter Bunny’s food–because, apparently, despite the fact the mesh-eyed giant terror traumatized her a bit this morning, she’s over it and is okay with the fact that he’s comin’ to our house tonight.

Lainey chose celery and water and scripted my note to him, verbatim, as follows:

Easter Bunny, Come to my house.
At nine.
Hello.
Bring me a basket and chocolate.
Please. I love you. Love, Lainey

Photobucket

Tomorrow brings good things.
Have a wonderful Easter.

And a total tangent, but many have asked about the absence of the hospital bracelet. It fell off. Just fell off while I was running out the door one day. I didn’t get to cut it myself or have a moment when it happened. I looked down and saw it lying there and thought maybe I’d cry or fall apart but, nope. Just tucked it in the pocket of a diaper bag and moved on. Because life moves on and we’re all okay.

Loved hearing about Lainey and her reaction to the Easter Bunny. My daughter (who’s a little older than you(!) was petrified of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny – all of ’em…. I’m really glad the tooth fairy never woke her up, during her nocturnal offerings! Thank-you for sharing your day with us!…Rosemary

I love the traditions in your family, and the way your pictures truly tell a story. You have inspired me and so many readers to pick up a camera and not sweat the things that don’t matter, and to love the things that do.

PS, I have a pretty big obsession with bonnets myself, I can’t stop buying them:)

I love to read this ongoing story of your life before I go to bed at night. For some reason it gives me a sense of peace and you just have a way of lulling me into dreamland with your majestic pictures and words about life.

*sigh* …. goodbye 2 tons of bricks that have been sitting on my shoulders all day long. I may pick you back up tomorrow and I may not.. but for now.. I am just content. To be who I am, where I am, how I am..

Thank you Kelle for the breath of fresh air and new perspective that you give me. Thank you for the complimentary pair of rose colored *Special Edition* Kelle Hampton glasses that I am reminded to put on whenever life turns back into.. well… real life. =) What did I ever do before I owned a pair of these glasses??? I dont remember.. I think I’d like to keep it that way!

    God Bless you sweet girl.

Kelle~ I love this post so much! I love Easter and little girls in dresses and lace and bonnets too! I’m so sad that my little girl (7 1/2 now!) won’t let me dress her up anymore. In fact, just today I went to get her an Easter dress and I had a hard time even getting her to wear a dressy blouse and skirt!! But, when she was Lainey’s age, I had her in lace socks and bonnets and frilly dresses ALL the time. Thank you for your honesty and for sharing your beautiful family. I have loved your blog so much and can relate to much to much of your life. ((HUGS)) and Happy Easter!

Kelle, I am incredibly envious of the neighborhood you live in! I hope someday when I have my own children that I will be lucky enough to live in a community that is as tight-knit as yours seems to be. Another person who posted above me said something about the rose-colored glasses they have found since beginning to read your blog and I couldn’t agree more. I had found myself so downtrodden lately with my own struggles in life but since I’ve begun reading your blog I have been completely inspired to find my own pair of rose-colored glasses and begin enjoying the little things in life. Thank you for being that inspiration! Keep on writing and sharing pictures of your beautiful family!! =) -Tracey

So happy to see spring and Easter and all of the hope and joy that comes with it so beautifully portrayed.
The sleeveless dresses and flip-flops make me miss FL just a little bit. My daughter had her first swim lesson today. In an indoor pool. Ah well…afterward the three of us were all wearing our jackets for a 3 hour walk around the city even though it was a clear, sunny day here!
Easter to look forward to tomorrow. If it’s nice we may go watch the egg hunt in Golden Gate Park. Ada is too little to join but even still it seems fun to watch.
    Happy Easter and Happy Spring!

    Whew. Ok, done.

LOVE the new banner…just perfect. And I don’t what it is…I swear I can’t put my finger on it, about LL burying her face in your shoulder, and your sweet mama smile saying, “I know you’re scared, but it’s really pretty stinkin’ cute that you’re scared of the Easter bunny,” totally made me tear up.

Took me right back to my days as a toddler teacher…when they’d bring in Santa or the Easter Bunny, and those littles, who I swear to god I loved on like they were my own, would (like 6 at a time mind you) cling to me for dear life…and it’s all you can do to love them back, keep ’em safe, and just laugh.

    Happy Easter Hamptons,

    Kelle,

It truly is a blessing to be able to come and read about your journey with your beautiful girls. Almost 5 years ago, I was lucky enough to meet my best friend’s little sister Kaitlyn, who has Down Syndrome as well, and it has transformed me just seeing her growing up, though I don’t get to see her nearly as much as I would like to. Your husband is exactly right for calling Nella “Little Present.” That is exactly what she is, and my, is she gorgeous. Lainey too. You are wonderful for giving the rest of the world a snapshot of your everyday life with your little family. Every time I get the chance to read this I love you and the girls just a little bit more. Thank you so much 🙂

I LOVE Nella’s nickname. Not only because she is a present (I always refer to Morgan as “a gift” to our family) but because the biggest thing Morgan has taught me is to live in the present. I spent so much time that first year worrying about the future and unknowns with her. It was such a waste of time. I missed out on what was happening at that time, not completely but still, too much energy was spent on it. I’ve learned to not do that anymore. I focus on today, the present, with her because it’s the known and it makes the journey a happy one for me.

P.S. Thanks for reminding me that I have some of those cute bunny ears too. Gotta go find where we put them. Happy Easter:)

And thanks for dropping by my blog to say hi! It made my day!!!

Happy Easter!!! My own very brave, social and outgoing three and half year old looked completely stricken when asked to sit on the Easter Bunny’s lap this year. Two other moms of toddlers asked her to show their sons how to do it and I guess she felt the pressure…like the quintessential good sport she is, she sat on his lap with some serious “deer-in-the-headlights” eyes. It simultaneously broke my heart and made me roar with laughter…

I absolutely love your new banner…and wish that all of our neighborhoods were as neighborly as yours. You know this, but I will again tell you: you are beyond blessed. Enjoy your special Sunday! Families are such blessings! <3 Beth

I wish my neighborhood would do things like that. Heck if my neighbors even smiled at one another it would be like the skies open up and angels singing, and we’d need to call the church to report a miracle has occurred. Our neighbors are more the “write nasty notes to each other” kind. Oh well. You make me think twice about wanting another boy, I think I may need to have a girl! And my son will be 3 months on the 9th and he is already almost 12 lbs!! You are so lucky to get to have your tiny baby just a little bit longer!

Easter isn’t celebrated in quite the same way in the middle east…but while I wouldn’t trade the experience we are having now for the world, i do miss all those neighborhood things we used to do for Easter and for “just because” weekends. thanks for letting me live this fun day through your post.

I love the new header…and when I saw it, I was reminded of a little phrase my Catholic friends taught me years ago. When something unexpected happened…something you first saw as not a good thing…they always said “Offer it up!” They meant, “Give it to God” because He knows how to seemingly sprinkle it with His mystery and magic and give it back to you as a blessing. So when I saw my sweet Nella’s feet held high in the sky in her fathers hands…I remembered again, “We offered her up!” And she is just blessing now…blessing, blessing, blessing! The neighborhood event looked wonderful…and to all those commenters who wish they lived there, the wonderful things are because of a few wonderful people who make them happen…and those people can be us in our neighborhoods. Little things like surprising a neighbor with an Easter Basket who may not have had one in years…I cannot wait for your call this morning to tell me what happened with Easter’s arrival. I must agree with Lainey’s little fears…a giant rabbit can be scarey…us dads almost enjoy that, because it makes our arms a strong fortress that we hope you never leave. Feel mine around you, sweet one, for I still hold you there. Happy Easter…He is Risen and lifts us too!

Happy Easter! We just came back from Disney and one of the first things I did was come to your blog and read the happy posts and updates. It might seem funny to say this but I thought of you when we were in “It’s A Small World” . . . there’s the “Holland” area with ducks and a boy and girl wearing wooden clog shoes and every time we went by (we rode it at least three times) my son would quack, quack with the ducks and I sent a little happy thought of Nella your way. It IS a small world after all . . . it’s a world of laughter and a world of tears, a world of LOVE and a world of fears and I can’t remember the rest, but it’s always been my favorite ride. I found it ironic and funny . . . I think I could see the Eiffel tower from Holland. 🙂 Disney really is where dreams come true, right?

Hope you and your family is having a very Hoppy Day!!!

Adorable post!!!! One of my favorites:) You just blow me away with your words, Kelle! I mean to say, as in completely talk to myself as I’m reading this blog and say to myself, “Are you kidding me??? How can she say something so totally awesome like THAT???!!” . . and what you write makes perfect sense and I never have to say to myself, “Now, that’s a little deep! What the heck is she trying to say?”. I loved the way you describe Lainey’s shyness, but yet excitement combined. That is my six year old son to a “T”!!!! But, of course, I never knew how to describe it and you did it just perfect!!! I want to live in your neighborhood, too. I love what your Poppa wrote about your neighborhood;) That it is the people who make it and ANY neighborhood can be that cool! Thanks Poppa:) HAPPY EASTER!!!:)

Well, I’m 69th or 70th, depending if someone beats me to the post button. We still don’t have any kiddies, but thankfully my niece and nephew visited Friday, and I held TWO easter egg hunts for them! It was a blast watching my little red-headed nephew zip here and there with excitement. He is the epitome of joy and delight and discovery. I even hid some high for my 16 year old nephew. In my opinion, you are never too old… Gorgeous little smock on Lainey! How cute that she was scared by the bunny, but your little bunny, your little present, just gets more and more beautiful every day!!!

A frightening diagnosis, a marriage, a move, loss of a job…it’s impossible to think at first how this all will be possible…Eventually, what moves it all forward is the subterranean ebb and flow of being alive among the living…And onward full-tilt we go, pitched and wrecked and absurdly resolute, driven in spite of everything to make good on a new shore. To be hopeful, to embrace one possibility after another–that is surely the basic instinct…Crying out: High tide! Time to move out into the glorious debris. i think it was the giant bunny dancing in the mall the other day that did it.
and i have to tell you … when i was at the natural baby care store yesterday scouring the world for some cute baby boy clothing (seriously … it’s hard work.) i came across the most beautiful baby girl onesie that simply said -bunny- i wanted to scoop it up and send it to you.

What a delicious Easter you are having so far!:)
You made me laugh with the Big Bad Bunny story, kids are hilariously unpredictable, aren’t they?

My hubby has a similiar knack of cultivating nicknames…Mine is currently “Cakes”. It started as Baby, then Baby-Cakes and then finally just Cakes. People often think my name is Kate when he calls me it (its not, it’s Allison!!)
Our daughter, Grace is/was Baby G, BG, sometimes “Ali-G-in-the-house” with faux rap accent and now its usually just GG(gigi). She’s 6years old.
Our 1 year old son,Will, so far has been refered to consistently as “Mootz” and I’ll be honest, I’m not loving it so far but I know its still a work in progress, lol.
Hearts and hugs to and yours on this holiday.

Looks like you and I had the same food for Easter – a happiness sandwich 🙂 Thanks for sharing all of the precious moments with us – Nella is getting more and more gorgeous by the day! Package should be on the way for the girls within the next couple of days.

    Happy happy Easter Kelle!

Kelle, you always have such amazing posts and pictures to go with those amazing posts, I enjoy reading your blog very much so. My daughter wasent too fond of the fury white rabbit this year either (she is 2) but she loved her easter egg hunt! Lainey looks beautiful in her dress and easter bunny ears, and Nella is just perfect, “little present” fits her perfectly. She is such a beautiful gift. I love how your community has such great things to offer, no outdoor movie nights or block party’s here =( Im so sorry your bracelet fell off 🙁 Ive kept both of mine and put them in each of my kids scrap books.

Ive noticed your having to delete user comments quite a bit still, and I just wanted to say I think thats so sad that someone would write something on this beautiful blog that would even need to be deleted 🙁 (((hugs)))

P.S. Love the new header picture! beautiful!!

I’m 25 (soon to be 26) and I still smile when my dad calls me my nick name. I have two (depending on the season); Sun Bunny and Snow Bunny. I know that Lainey and Nella will cherish their nick names as much as I do later on in life.

It looks like y’all had a fun Easter Weekend. I wish I lived in y’all’s neighborhood, it looks like so much fun!

What a beautiful Easter weekend to have! Lainey sounds like my niece when it comes to hiding that smile. 😉

I love how you shared the nick names given by daddy… I can envision it in my mind and it brings tears to my eyes… My husband does a lot of sweet things with our son that has that effect on me as well. 🙂

He too has MANY nick names that I’m sure will narrow down to one some day. 🙂

As for the bracelet, it happened when it was time to happen for you. 🙂 Sounds like it was a perfect way for you… Lots of love, and Happy Easter! <3

Kelle, about the nicks, I still call my one and only dght, Jamie Patricia now 23 yrs old, my “Baby-girl”, also another nick I called her is “Willus”, like in “what are you talking about ‘Willus'” ?, lol You might be too young for that show, but Jamie, when she was lil would be chit chatting away none stop, and I would often have to say, slow down Willus and tell me again what you’re talking ’bout !….lol and even now when she says something silly or odd, or that she did not quite think out and I question it, I call her ‘Willus’ !…*winks*…Deborah, the Canadian Nurse…

I wanted to let you know that I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now. You have a beautiful family. My son, Graham, 2, was just diagnosed with a genetic syndrome in February. The tip of his 18th choromosome is missing. He has a number of challenges, but he brings us so much joy. He’s perfect just the way he is!! Suffice it to say, I know what you’re going through. I find a lot of your posts hit close to home. It’s such a roller coaster. I look around at the stacks of medical reports and think, “Is this really our life?” Yet I see him and feel so blessed. Hugs!

“Let’s go see Santa” is like a threat in our house. Gracee was probably 3ish when she met him (well kinda met him) for the first time. She got all dressed up in her little Santa dress complete with hat..ran into the mall, took one look and SCREAMED bloody murder..which set off a few other little ones…she then ran to her daddy and would not take her face out of his chest until she heard the engine of the car starting! When we go to the mall she can still tell you where Santa’s house was setup, that is how much it scared her!
I love the picture of Nella looking into the camera…she has very wise old soul eyes…she is shedding her newborn look..she is just breathtaking. And your picture at the end with her little feet touching the clouds but she is still safe in daddy’s hands is just about as spirtual as it gets..your photos are changing, they are so moving and you almost don’t need words to see the story in them..me likey!

    Loving:

    1. Lainey’s note to the Easter Bunny. The greatest note of all time I am certain.

    2. My favorite header of yours ever.

    3. I too think the Easter Bunny is freaky and that one in partic. Your description of the mesh eye holes while holding Nella had me laughing. Remind me to tell you about the time I was molested by a giant Osprey mascot at a Missoula baseball game…swear. While I was throwing out the first pitch in the middle of the field. Not even exaggerating a teeny bit.

    4. The love you have for the place that is your HOME. It doesn’t have deciduous trees or snowy Christmases but you’ve carved out a little slice of perfection in a coastal community down south. Good job, friend.

    5. Nella’s perfect little symmetrical face. Oh that sage face!

There is so much color to you and the people in your life….and it’s so bright. You just exude goodness, I can tell, and we’ve never met. Your children are beautiful. I lost my shit a little bit when Nella entered the world. Not because it’s sad…but the sight of your face in the photo where you held her for the first time. You wondered if you smiled…I’m a huge fan of *trying* to capture the moment. That photo is like like no other which moved me the way that one did. Kelly….I’m a big fan : )

I feel like you and I have similar stories in what we went through. The feelings you expressed in Nella’s birth story was exactly how I felt when Lilly was born. It’s been really difficult for me over these past few weeks, and your blog has helped me look for the beauty in all that we’re going through. Thank you! You have made mention so many times in these posts of writing a book and I am sure you meant it and all, but part of me wants to say to the “2010 Kelle” that it WILL HAPPEN, you are REALLY going to have a book, and thousands of people will pre-order it and be so happy for all you have done since Nella’s birth! “2012 Kelle” is pretty awesome and I think is just going to become more awesome along with that beautiful family of yours!
