When all goes well during the week, my midway point will have the kitchen looking like this…
It hardly ever happens, but tonight, the planets have aligned. There are candles. And the countertops are so clean and reflective, I can apply my lipgloss in them. And instead of day-old Shepherds Pie, it smells like Capri Fig Frangiapani.
Oh, there’s so much I could blurt out here on this little space of mine. So much enjoyment of life and all these little thoughts I’ve had here and there that I wish I could have the time to pencil them down at any given moment in one of my beautiful journals. And then those birds. Those damn birds that were singing so loudly in the middle of the night, I swear there was some aviary audition for Chorus Line in the woods. I’m all for enjoying the small things but last night I wanted to chuck something out there to make them go to sleep. Seriously.
Summer continues to unravel with all its color and splendor and this week, the “release” of all my friends from their teaching demands means for the next three months, we can huddle together whenever we want for morning coffee and waffles, waterpark afternoons, library breaks and pool dates.
Today, they gathered at our house and we mamas talked and laughed and made fun of Stephanie’s razor burn while the littles jumped into blue ripples of refreshment and showed off their swimmin’ styles.
Lainey kept waitin’ for her friends all morning, so excited they were coming. “My lotsa lotsa friends comin’,” she said.
And these three?
They’re pure trouble when their mischievous minds collide. Today, it was Q-tips. About a hundred of them, scattered across the wood floor. I like a little trouble. Keeps it interesting.
And then there’s this mess of love that happens when the mamas relax on the floor while the kids are wrecking havoc on toys and books and piles of snacks that have placed for them on little tables. We all swap babies and lay kisses and catch up. It’s just lovely.
And about a hundred billion times, it gets brought up that So-and-so’s just getting so big and Where does time go and My, it seems like just yesterday they were born. I just love the people of my Village.
****************************************************************
And, what I’m loving about summer right now…
When, mid-afternoon, the sky splits thunder and the clouds grow dark and cold rains come in to cool the sidewalks. And I drink it all in from the quilted chair by the window where I feed Nella who’s so sleepy all she needs is a two-minute snack pack and the accompanying cozy rains to lull her into an afternoon nap.
And evening post-rain walks where the big sister pushes the little sister…
…and sometimes doesn’t make it very far before she kinda loses it in front of the neighbors, dropping to the cement, kicking off her boots and yelling at Latte who has jumped out of the stroller to take a poop in someone else’s yard. Love it when that happens.
And Hibiscus in full bloom…
My little cue-ball whose tiny head bobs beautifully from behind her new adventure…the exersaucer.
(And to those who have asked, physical therapy is going SO good!)
Watching my three-year-old enjoy summer like never before. When did it happen? When did she become a girl? A lanky little willow who marches to the beat of her own drum, says “No, Thank You,” reminds me to take my vitamins, loves to pour her own milk and still opens the door after her nap, finds me with her eyes and then runs with everything she has to jump into my arms and burrow into my neck. Oh, I love her.
Swoon.
One of my favorite summer memories was visiting my grandma’s farmhouse as a kid. It was quaint and rustic with a walk-around porch that stretched around its perimeter where an old rusted porch swing hung. My grandma taught me how to shuck corn on that swing and we’d spend hours peeling off husks, throwing the scraps to the ground and marveling at the satisfaction of the golden kernels that were hidden underneath.
Actually, I just made that story up. I never shucked a single corn with my grandma and she sure as hell didn’t live in a farmhouse. Made for a great summer story though. Oh, she did have a porch swing.
The real truth is, I like the word “shucked” and I wanted to throw it around a bit. While I might not have shucked a lot as a kid, I thought Lainey might enjoy some good summer corn shucking sans porch swing. And she did. Stretched out in our driveway, and how was that I put it? Oh yes…throwing scraps to the ground and marveling at the satisfaction of the golden kernels hidden underneath.
A summer without corn is like a wedding without dancing.
And don’t get me started on watermelon.
My girl ate three pieces this afternoon and if watching her tear it apart, its pink sticky juice trickling everywhere, isnt’ enjoying the small things, then I don’t know what is. Well, maybe shucking corn with your grandma. Or listening to a bird choir in the middle of the night.
Regardless, it was so very summer and ought to be repeated thrice weekly if you ask me.
I keep scrolling back up to look at those…love how very summer they are. Now, if I could just find the perfect shade of nail polish to match that watermelon, then we could just take that summer list of mine, ball it up and pitch it because my summer quests would peak out right there.
And, this is slightly off topic but something I’ve been meaning to say for quite some time. And it goes something like this…
Thank you.
Thank you every one of you for your comments, your e-mails, your support, your readership, the beautiful kind things you have said and done and for finding it worthwhile to celebrate the amazing beautiful things of life with us. This blog has opened up a lot of great opportunities for me but it’s still just the place I go to put it all down…all this wonderfulness of life. And sometimes I forget that “Down syndrome” is what kind of propeled all this because, in my mind, it’s such a tiny part of our life now. Because it doesn’t change the bigger things of life. It doesn’t change any bit of the happiness we have as a family…or our future together. And celebrating all that we love here on this blog and being supported by such an amazing community of people has played a magnificent role in changing me as a person…allowing me to live through this as beautifully as possible. And I’ll never forget that so much healing came from the very beginning when lovely “strangers” reminded me that it’s all okay.
So, thank you for that. Thank you for loving life and so vibrantly embracing it all with me. It inspires me.
And, I guess that’s all.
Oh, that and the fact that it’s magic outside right now. Rumbling thunder and a purple sky that keeps igniting with light…and there’s a movie humming in the background, I can hear the pop-pop-pop of Orville Redenbacher in the microwave, the biggest little is curled up on the couch and the littlest little is all jammied up and humming sweet sing-songey coos, attempting to put herself to sleep. She needs a mama.
So, goodnight.

Thank you for reminding me that rain=summer. I have forgotten as we have had tonnes and tonnes of it. But tonight after reading this, me and my birthday girl headed out in the rain to run and jump in puddles. Love it!
And can you believe Nella is in an exersaucer? where has the time gone?

Thanks, Jess! xoxo Miss you!

I’m a frequent reader but I don’t often comment. I can so easily relate to all of your posts…but especially this one. I’m also a teacher, and I find bird choirs mostly annoying, but I actually did used to shuck corn on my grandma’s porch (no quaint porch swing, though)! My daughter is also 3 and when there are thunder storms her and I get blankets and sit on our front porch to watch the lightning and jump when it feels like the thunder is going right through our bodies.
All that to say that the thing about your blog is that it is so universal – we all have the little things to enjoy. Like watermelon, “exersaucing” babies, and even melt downs on the sidewalk complete with gumboots. Thank you for reminding us of that with your inspiring words and flawless photos!
Mrs. Cline says
Oh, stop it with Nella’s cute little sticking-up hair pictures. I just want to squeeze her.
Meghan says
Wow. That photo of the lightning is amazing. (Of course the photos of your kids are too, but that’s a given.)

When I am old and incontinent, I shall eat watermelon…and those who see the puddles on the pavement beneath me shall assume it is…the watermelon. You had me with “thrice.” Nella’s hair looks like what happens when kids put their hands on that sphere thing in the science lab and their hair shoots straight up. But Nella’s does it just because she is so magical! I cannot wait to visit in July and see all her new changes. Until then, may your pool be filled with lotsa, lotsa friends, your sky aglow with bolts of summer lightning, your arms overflowing with bundles of babies and your heart overflowing with sheer, unbridled bliss. And learn to hear the music in those birds in the woods, they sing because they cannot contain their joy! I love you!

And oh, we have come so far from weeping in the corridor, from wondering if we would ever find our way back, from feeling like our canvas sail was torn and were doomed to the shallows. We’re trimmin’ the sails and catchin’ the wind (and yes, in this metaphor, Nella and Lainey both wear big, puffy, protective life jackets.)

No, Kelle. Thank YOU. Thank you for allowing me to see this world the way it’s meant to be seen. Thank you for inspiring me to love just a little bit harder. And thank you for helping me to smile and embrace the blobs of ketchup that end up on brand new clothes, for showing me it’s okay for Michaela to put her mouth on the dirty garden hose while attemping a refreshing sip of water (even though I am freaking over it inside–I let her enjoy it for that moment.) You have literally showed me how to enjoy the small things. And for that I am so eternally grateful.

Love your blog, Kelle. You are simply awesome and as an expectant mom, I am learning from you.
As an Iowan, I happen to know a lot about sweet corn. Here’s a tip for spreading butter on your freshly steamd stalk…butter a piece of bread, then rub it on your corn…it’s easy and Lainey will find it cool!

Such a summer filled post.
What more could a summer be? Watermelon, corn, friends, swimming. You’ve got summer down, girl!
Summer is a season that comes straight from the heart, I think. It allows you to do all these things with family and friends and just enjoy life. That’s so amazing to me.
Lainey is such a princess. She’s so cute, I can just tell she’s going to grow up to be beautiful like her mama. And nella? Growing like a bean stalk! She’s so big, and her wide eyes just take in the world around her. You’ve got the best littles, Kelle. Have a great summer with them.

Here in central florida the thunder can go on for hours. Today, I think it thundered for 5 hours straight and only rained a little bit. My girlfriend and I had plans to hang out with the kids tonight in our pool/spa and catch up while are hubby’s were busy with work. We were totally grumbling about how the stupid weather ruined our plans. Later when your blog posted we laughed at how you loved the thing we were just cursing. LOL. This time last year my middle daughter (5yrs) was diagnosed with epilepsy (after 6 months or so of going crazy wondering what was “wrong”- I could drive myself crazy with regret over those 6 months if I let it). Anyway, I remember feeling such fear at hearing the words petit mal seizures, and waded through real grief at the realization that she would need daily medication. I grieved for the daughter she was, because I thought then that this somehow altered her, that it somehow made her different than she was born to be. I remember feeling that she was not whole anymore. I am almost ashamed to say that out loud today, because she is whole. She is not less than. In those first weeks of being overwhelmed with the craziness of doctor visits, testings, medications, etc. I couldn’t imagine letting the weight of it all slide from my shoulders, but here it is a year later and we are moving ahead. However, there are still days plagued with doubt, and days when she struggles with dark moods swings that leave me asking unanswerable questions like, “Is this because of the seizures? Would she still be this same girl if she didn’t have the epilepsy?” What I can say about today, though, is that I no longer carry the weight of all that heart squeezing fear. And, through it all I am realizing that I am gaining so much strength and compassion. My mama’s heart beats with a fierce love for my girls, and that is all that truly matters- the love.

Loving this summerlicious post! For me summer is sweet corn fresh from the garden, shucking it along the way back to the house to the waiting pot of boiling water. Summers on my aunt & uncle’s farm in Iowa were kid heaven!
Also loving the chaos of a full house… kids & moms & mischief throughout. The q-tip extravaganza cracked me up… at my house it was the kleenex box… a brand spankin’ new one I had just put in our room. Round the corner yesterday to find the 4 year old in a laundry basket filled with kleenex as the 2 year old danced around pulling the next layer out of the box & draping it over his brother as they both giggled like nutters. How could I possibly get mad at that?!?
And, oh yes, THANK YOU for sharing your writing talents & beautiful images & honest thoughts with all of us. You really have changed so much of how I see my every-day world.
Rock on Mama!

With silver queen corn at 10 ears for a dollar in rural Ohio, I did my fair share of shucking growing up! And competing with my cousins to see who could spit their watermelon seeds the farthest from the porch swing. And catching fireflies. And when I moved to FL I traded to the summer storms. They almost make the heat worth it π
Thanks for the great summer posts. I feel warm despite the wind and fog that come with summers here in the city by the bay.

It is China Glaze “Light My Tiki.” But the reason I am sharing is… I fell in LOVE with this summer color once it was on my toes and fingers. My husband was teasing me that I have a million different versions of this “summer color.” And I replied and said, “Yeah, but this one is just SOOO WATERMELON!” It seriously looks like a Watermelon Jolly Rancher. Anyways… I don’t know if it’s the exact shade you are looking for or not (and I see you already have a stock-pile of suggested nail polish colors to go through already) but just wanted to share since my husband and I just had the conversation about it looking like watermelon!
I have to say… you are my BIGGEST inspiration right now. I’ve always had a secret love for writing and photography, and I am just now starting to dabble in it with my new Canon! I TOTALLY relate to your Photography FAQs on your blog. I have always been obsessed with taking pictures, but now that my husband bought me my new camera… the picture snapping has gotten even worse and I LOVE it! I LOVE how beautiful you, your family, and your girls are! When I see you have a new post, I get this feeling… like my favorite “best-selling” author has finally released a new one! Your posts MAKE my day. I know you hear very similar words from nearly every single one of your readers… but seriously. I mean it. π Thank you for inspiring, writing, and photographing. You are AMAZING! I SO wish I could meet you and TALK to you! I feel like I know you somehow! Oh! Ps. I think your beautiful Nella and my handsome Breck were born just a day or so apart! Breck was born January 24, 2010! I love this age don’t you!? Anyways… enjoy all of your summer savories! Love, Amber

My first year in Switzerland is coming to a close. Through this year, I have mourned my country, my Florida, my friends, my family, my childhood dreams.. Most people say, ohhh, but you’re soo lucky to live in EUROPE, wow! I know, I know. but it is a matter of the life I imagined has changed. I wanted to stay in FL, live close to my mom. Have pool parties. But oh well, I am enjoying the small things. Trying at least. Somehow along the way, I found your blog and it has helped me tremendously to embrace and celebrate too, so thank you!
It is summer in Switzerland too. And even here in this foreign country of cheese and chocolate, watermelon and corn have found their way into my garden. And the best part??? The corn flew across thousands of miles, from my homeland, across the ocean, only to land on my grill!! It is a small thing, but woman, I am enjoying it!!!
Oh, and our pool just opened. Life is good.

Your words just take my breathe away Kelle. I often read a sentence, close my eyes, and REALLY REALLY think about the beauty in them. They are so inspiring, so beautiful. I feel like you have taken many of my thoughts and turned them into something magnificent.
And your pictures, oh your pictures. Absolutely stunning! Nella and Lainey are two of the most gorgeous children I’ve ever seen! Practically edible! π

friend..you come to pa sometime and i shall teach you to shuck corn like nobodies gramma! We have fields of it growing in our backyard (and i will say probably the best you will ever eat). we eat it… we take pictures in it….we steal ears to feed the cows that have been coveting it from the other side of the fence…and then in the fall we use the dried cornstalk to decorate for halloween. and i swear we eat a watermelon a day in the summer! throw some black raspberries in and you have our summer menu…i love summer!
you are one blessed lady..and it shows that you know it! love the pictures of your family and friends..and how much you love them shows in your pictures..i like that.

I have just come across your blog through a link from a friend who read your birth story. I must admit I sat at my desk sobbing, not as much for you and what you have been through, but for myself and my special angel because you put into words what I experienced myself. I totally related to all that you have been through and still face everyday, not least of which the concious effort not to sink into the negatives of the situation, not for yourself and your own feelings but for what your child will face in her life and what your older child will face in hers, my oldest is “normal” in the stereotypical society we live, turning 4 this year and my angel who will be 1year tomorrow has unexplained cerebral palsy. The only difference between your story and mine was Gabby’s diagnosis at 3 months instead of birth. Congratulations and well done on being the mother you are and will still be, forever! Thank you for allowing me to face my own emotions and I really must add, you are a fantastic photographer!

OH YEAH…….Everything IS OK!
Life is SOOOO good and the more we realize it,and NOT get wrapped up in the “stuff” (material things) and trying to “keep up with the Joneses” and just savoring what we HAVE and learning to be grateful for THAT………then we can truly say we are Enjoying the Small things! My parents raised 8 kids, and we didn’t have a lot of “stuff” be we sure did have a lot of LOVE, (my mom was a teacher, too, and made the sacrifice to be a stay-at-home) and looking back now we have the most amazing memories. You, Kelle Hamptom, are making some AMAZING memories for your littles, and I can ASSURE YOU, one day when they reach my ripe old age (of 47!) they will get the same warm, fuzzy feeling when they think back to their childhood and remember…….the family swims in the pools, the walks around the block, the watermelon and chalk fun in the driveway! And most importantly, that you had LOTS AND LOTS of TIME & LOVE for them!!!

As I read this, my Lainey (who just turned 2), is jumping and dancing on the bed to the Train song on your blog while her baby sis Josie, laughs and tries to crawl toward her. Talk about a charmed life. I lead one and you help me to remember that.
I am a watermelon FREAK. I think in the summer I could survive on it and fresh tomatoes. Man, would I be skinny or what?? Anyway, my oldest daughter, Kayla (4) has discovered that she too loves watermelon, “just like Mommy” and this has become one of our nightly traditions!! Keep up the good work!

I just need to tell you something that I’ve been thinking about the past few days. I work in a pediatricians office in Michigan, and the other day a family came in with three beautiful children, one of those children has DS. I thought of you immediately, you… and beautiful little Nella. I was able to work with her for about 15 minutes on getting her blood pressure, and checking her hearing and making sure her eyes were working wonderfully… she was a rock star. I couldn’t help but think that Nella will be the exact same way, her mama was wonderful with her, treated her just like her big sister and big brother, just like you do. It’s nothing different, she was just a remarkable young girl who WILL succeed in life, just like little Nella. And her big sister, oh my her big sister was such a blessing, cared for her little sis, in a way that I big sister should, just the way that Lainey loves and cares for Nella.
I just needed to tell you that Nella will be a ROCK star, and has already shown that in so many ways. You are a blessing to us all Kelli! Thank you.

Your blog makes my heart ache in so many ways… it makes me miss the “village” I never realized I was missing, makes me alternate between depair and hope that one day I’ll figure out how to build one, and yet I keep coming back because your photos capture so much beauty, your children are angels on earth, and I find inspiration to refocus on the joy, beauty and love in my own life – all the precious little things, even the new grass stains on the knees of my two year old’s pants. Those stains mean that he is HERE, and he is able to run and laugh with glee as he falls to the ground – what an amazing gift. Thank you!

You really put things into perspective for me, Kelle. I have an almost five year old, I run my own business, help my husband with his business and have a house to keep. I know I’m not unlike any other mother out there AND I only hve ONE child. But some days I feel completely overwhelmed, especially when I see all the crumbs on the floor, the laundry, the dust, the tubs and toilets that need scrubbed and then the guilt from leaving my son to play by himself while I “try to get something done” (my famous words). Then there are days like today that I read your blog and soak in your advice of just enjoying the moment and loving my life as it is right now. There will be a day when I will barely see my son because he will be out with his friends, playing sports, just being a typical teenager then adult. Kelle, you are truly inspiring to me…from the way you live your life to the absolutely beautiful photographs you take!
You thanked us, your readers, but I thank you for bringing light into my world every time I read your blog (which, by the way is every day! I even re-read posts just for the inspiration!)
The pictures of your daughters are always cute and amazing…and the lightning photo was great! Can’t wait to show my little boy that one!
Thanks again!

Kelle,
I want to say THANK YOU to YOU! I haven’t had a child yet, but it is that time in my life where many friends, cousins and people in my life are staring to have their first child. Everyone worries about the testing, what they might possibly find out at each of those ultrasounds, debating what they would do if they were delivered unexpected news. It can be down right terrifying if you listen to it enough. Looking toward the future children my husband and I will have, I don’t want to agonize away my entire pregnancy with what ifs.
Reading your blog each week has helped me tremendously to know that my life will be beautiful no matter what. You sucked the joy out of life before Nella came along and life is even better with her.
Thank you for letting families know that having a child who has Down syndrome or any other condition does not change who we are as people or the wonderful experiences we will get to take on this journey of life.
I believe you have helped to erase any stigma that still lingers about children born with various conditions. And I hope that this doesn’t sounds strange, but I like the fact that you didn’t immediately have to join every group associated with Down syndrome. I like that your approach is to focus on your children and your family and nurture them like any new momma would…with lots of love, milk, snuggles and your time. That is what matters most to any child and I think any child can thrive and become outstanding with those things from her momma.
So, THANK YOU, Kelle Hampton for taking away the fears any new momma might face. If Kelle can do, so can we!!
Faith

Just wanted to share with you, that my eldest little graduates from Kindergarten today. At the awards ceremony, I just cried with pride when she received the Academic Excellence award. I was making a scrapbook for her teacher last night and just marveled at all that the kids did this year, how much they have grown. I looked at the picture I took first day of class, and the one I took yesterday and just thought how grateful I was for having enjoyed every bit of the little things this past year. Now to go rock out the summer!
Thanks for capturing your life so beautifully in photos. It has served as a reminder to do the same. Love to you and yours.

I love that everyday at work, I open kellehampton.com. And 80% of the time, it’s the same post that I’ve read over and over and over. I keep re-reading them and somehow I find something new to get out of every post.
And opening my browser is like Ralphie from “A Christmas Story” opening his mailbox everyday to find the decoder kit (only your blogs are much more exciting than his letdown messege of drinking his Ovaltine).
But the part that makes me laugh at myself is when I open up my web browser to kellehampton.com and there’s a NEW post. I literally jump back in my chair, usually followed by “Holy ! A new post!” in my head. Today was that moment, pretty much.
I find myself nodding furiously as I scroll inch by inch and read paragraph by paragraph. And I think to myself “this girl is like my long lost sister becuase I thought *I* was the only one who felt this way, wrote this way, enjoyed small things in this way”.
After the corn-shucking paragraph, I literally said in my head “man, if only it were watermelons too”, to scroll down and BAM! there were the gorgeous pics of watermelons and the simplicity they bring which reminds us of summer and childhood.
So, without sounding like a complete creepy stalker, I’d just like to say, “Kelle Hampton, you so rock!”

Five months ago Down syndrome became a part of my everyday life and I have to agree that looking back I made a MUCH bigger deal out of it than it really is! Sometimes I even forget that my sweet Sutter is different….it is just simply amazing how far we have come in a few short months. Tell Nella to keep up the good work…she’s doing a great job in that exersaucer!

When I was 5, the neighbor kid, whose mother referred to him as “a house ape,” was 4. He came over one afternoon to ring the doorbell and see if I could play. Mom answered the door and neighbor kid stood there silently staring at my mother, lifted one leg, shook it, and out of his shorts rolled a poop. Ugh! I was then expected to play with him!
Moral of the story: It is the natural order of things for Latte to commit an indiscretion on the neighbor’s lawn. It is a further credit to your parenting that it was not Lainey who left the deposit! π
Kelle, beaucoup cheers and kudos. You have a lovely family and a lovely set of friends and it’s awfully generous of you to share that with the rest of us out here in the blogosphere. Thank YOU!

Love the fake corn story! π I actually did do a lot of corn shucking in my days. Living on a farm lends to that. At the end of the summer we would go out with my dad and pick huge burlap bags full of the stuff, and then sit outside in the front yard with our bare feet amidst the husks littering the ground. I hated it at the time, but I do have happy memories of that time spent with my sisters…and having the frozen peaches and cream sweet corn to last the winter??? That’s bliss! So much bliss that as an adult I found myself going to the Farmer’s market, buying bags of sweet corn, husking, cooking and bagging it up for the freezer. Thanks for reminding me of the fun of husking corn!

No, thank YOU Kelle! Your blog continues to inspire me every time I read a new post. And you know what? You have come so far since that day in January. It’s strange to feel proud of someone I’ll never meet but, heck, I’m proud of you, girl! By the way, I like the word shuck too. It’s underused but shouldn’t be! What’s your current favourite word? (I say current as being asked to pick just one is impossible). Excluding ‘love’ (goes without saying it’s a fave word!), I think my current favourite is ‘flummoxed’ (confused). I just like the ring to it. Anyway, just wanted to check in and say happy summer, hugs to LL and NC from the UK!

I started reading your blog about 6 months ago and since that day I haven’t been able to go a day without checking to see if you have updated! I am consumed with your amazingness. I live in Minnesota but my older sister lives in Fort Myers. She is expecting her first child and we couldn’t be more excited. She was given some news a few weeks ago about the baby. They said the baby has symptoms of having down syndrome. My sister was devastated but upbeat. My family is very close and we all reasured her that baby with DS or no DS is still going to be the best thing that every happened to her. I don’t know if I started reading your blog for a reason higher then I will ever understand but I just wanted to say THANK YOU! You inspire me everyday.
ps…I think I got my sister hooked on you too! =)

Kelle –
First of all, I attempted to check out your latest post while making dinner and feeding Alex. So when Soul Sister started to play, we just started to dance and dance…and I had to go back and repeat the song just so that we could continue to shake and laugh. So much for a sprained ankle from holding me back!
So 4 hours later, I find myself reading the post. When I started to read your thank you portion, the song switched to Ingrid Michaelson; and that’s the song that reminds me of the story of Nella’s birth. Glad to hear the song again, full circle, months later in a happy sentimental moment. Sending out a great big smile to you. You support us as much as we support you. And KC – I love all of your quotes. I wish that the best could be wrapped up in a post – the very best of KC…
The pictures are amazing. The B&W of Nella in the saucer and then the B&W of Lainey. Oh, the joy. Thank you for sharing your day and moments once again.
Keep my dear pooch of 12 years in your prayers. Buckley is failing fast and we have to face the sad reality of putting him down soon. Ugh. Pets are hear to touch our lives, but the contact is always too short. Rats.

OK, dog lover that I am, Buckley is in my prayers as well. My father always said, “Don’t trust people who don’t like dogs.” And once, when I was very little and suffering the anticipatory grief with a dog nearing his last long walk, I asked my dad if there will be dogs in heaven. He was a minister and vigilent about the correct exposition of scriptures. Pausing for a moment that made his words seem even more profound, he answered: “The Bible says, in heaven the lion shall lay down with the lamb. If there are lions and lambs in heaven, I am most assured there will be dogs.” My seven-year-old heart shouted “Glory!” Whatever is ahead for Buckley, the best is yet to be!

Kelle, I don’t think it’s “down syndrom” that “propeled” your blog readership, I believe it’s the openness, transparency and raw beauty that was weaved throughout dear Nella’s birthstory. It was pure and rough and happy and sad all at the same time. It was your honesty… your ability to be real- your willingness to allow readers into some of the deepest parts of your heart and emotions- places that most people are too afraid to let others inside of. And yet, you threw “fear” out the window and opened up the door to us… you allow us in and give us the gift of inspiration, humor, the beauty of your pictures and the invaluable lesson that life is awesome. It rocks! Even when it doesn’t. It’s all a matter of perspective. And that, right there- your “perspective”- is what lit the fire of this blog and keeps it blazing on. Thanks for the gift of sharing your life with us. π

KC and Poppa –
Thanks for all of your prayers and thoughts for my dear cheeky dog. He’s got it made these days….car rides, human food meals, walks without a leash, and personal delivery service to bring him up and down our 4 flights of our town house. And heaven is full of dogs for sure!
Buckley was a special needs dog – we were his 3rd family by 10 months. He’s been a challenge from time-to-time and has always acted like the eternal 1 year old; but we love him to pieces. And all of our friends remind us that no one would have kept him for as long as we did; but he deserved an awesome life, and in return, we were given a dog that loves our daughter and us unconditionally.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Grilled meat, corn, watermelon, smores, and root beer are only a few hours away!

Kelle,
I don’t think I have posted a comment before this, but I have to say: I LOVE YOUR DAD.
I fell in love with him when I read Nella’s birth story. He’s such a caring, loving dad, and I am glad for you.
My dad died in 1998; he never wrote to me, and certainly, had he lived, would not have posted anything personal on anyone’s blog. He told me he loved me once and I dissolved into tears. Just reading your dad’s comments brings me to tears, too, because his love is obvious.
I am not jealous at all. I loved my dad and I knew he loved me in his non-communicative way. I just thought I’d let you know that one of the beautiful things about your blog (and there are many) is that your dad is here in his little corner, loving on ya.

Oh summer!!! about an hour ago I told friends, “I would love to hear the ice cream truck coming down the street. I would run like hell to get out there just like I did when I was 10!” So I threw on my bathing suit, grabbed a magazine and went to the backyard to layout. Not 30 minutes later I hear a little tinkle of a noise and immediately sat up! I heard it again and faster than you could say “popsicle” I was up and out to the frontyard with dollars in hand! Ahhhh…..now that is a definite summer memory that I still enjoy! And enjoy my red, white, and blue mega missle is what this 37 year old did!!!
