Daily Challenge

December 10, 2010 By Kelle

My eyeballs are throbbing, my thoughts are muddled and I am tired. So, quickie post.

Our local hands-on pottery joint made a comfy retreat this morning for the making of some Christmas presents and an escape from cold rains (no really, we’re talking hats and mittens ’round here these days).

Photobucket

The kids took a break to block the doorway with a few nice rounds of Ring-around-the-Rosy.

Photobucket

Photobucket

My favorite piece from today…I love her happy people.

Photobucket

And look who’s standing in therapy today? A little fridge support and her favorite tamborine to hang on to, and she’s good to go. The first thing our therapist asks when he arrives is always, “where’s the tamborine?” It’s the magic toy. She works for it.

Photobucket

Okay…totally rallyin’ to finish this. One eye open now. Before it falls…

I’m excited to be joining Daily Challenge, a program created to encourage you to make small actions to make lasting impact in your health and life. It’s easy, fast and gives you a swift kick in the butt to think a bit more about daily choices. (You can join on Facebook as well).

Today’s challenge came at a good time. I’ve been feeling guilty for some of our eating habits lately, especially when it comes to snacks. A lot of running around has meant a lot of packaged foods. Too much. So today’s challenge made me think.

Share one of your healty treats of the season.

And I don’t think green rice crispy treats qualify. So, we got a little creative in the kitchen, tweaked some recipes and made one up. And Dude, it’s amazing what your kids will eat when it comes in cool shapes.

Behold, the veggie Christmas tree…

Photobucket
modeled by Lainey’s lovely friend, Baylee.

Green peppers, sliced and shaped into tree, cheese trunk, a little ranch dip piped with a Ziplock and tomato ornaments. Voila.

And not to come to a choppy end, but seriously…my one open is slippin. I’m out.

But happy…

Photobucket

Oh, forgot to mention, use code “PINWHEEL15” for 15% all pinwheels on 12/10 at Elizabeth St.
And don’t forget time’s a runnin’ out to order in time for Christmas for both Sticks and Stones and the self esteem Empower necklace from Belkai.

And the blog birthday wishes were lovely. Thank you.

Bummed in the frigid north with a cancelled flight holding me here until the morning. Knowing delays and interruptions sometimes can be sweet, I am determined to just find the beauty in it and I am actually enjoying a quiet evening of TV, nice Christmas lights, hot chocolate with Peppermint Schnapps and looking forward to seeing, smelling, savoring my girls…and chilling with the boys too, this weekend. I don’t care if it chilly there, those babies will warm a Poppa’s heart. And a balet recital on Sunday–sweet savory Sunday!! See you in the morning! She stands! She stands! Next, she will walk!

Oh my, look at her stand.

Healthy? Outside of the soon-to-be-cookie-baking-binge, we are keeping busy and avoiding snacking at night. Sewing, lots of sewing keeps me away from the kitchen. It wipes me out and gives me a kink in the neck, but still, it works. Cooking lots of broccoli. Eating lots of fresh fruit. Cooking from scratch without using processed anything – oh, it’s so much more work than I want, but it’s all good. Making lots of soup. Yum!!!

    Peace out.

Love, Lainey’s happy little people with stick legs. They always make me smile.

My absolute favorite gift last year, for Christmas, was my spoon holder that my little nephew, Owen, made for me at the Pottery Hallow. Those places are so amazing! I wish we would have had a place like that when I was a little. I LOVED making pottery. My mom still has a tea set that I made for her in high school. It still sits on the top shelf in her kitchen for all to see.

Good Luck on your daily challenge. I think I will have to pop over and challenge myself.

Hopefully that cold ends before I get down there! Nothing like moving 1,381 miles to escape the cold just to have it meet me there… I suppose as long as it doesn’t get down to 6 degrees there I’ll be alright with it!

Have a great weekend with Poppa – and a dance recital?!? I can’t wait to see the pictures!! Good Luck Lainey! You’ll be great!

    Okay my favorite healthy snack

1 package of unbaked crescent rolls, open and place on cookie tray and keep the rolls together, do not separate into individual rolls (or you could just use unbaked pizza dough) Bake as directed and when cool, smear whipped creamed cheese all over the top. Chop veggies and spread over the top of the cream cheese. I usually do broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, green peppers and a little bit of onion powder. Refrigerate for an hour and cut into squares. YUM YUM.

    Rik –

The HC with the Schnapps. We make a different version thanks to a small bar in Chestertown, MD. A fall drink entitled the “Count Chocula”, which is HC with 1 oz Gosslings dark rum, 1 oz Creme de Caco; and then sometimes we toss in 1 oz of Rumplemint. (excuse all of my spelling errors related to the above alcohol!).

And a fitting drink deserves a fitting way of requesting; we ask for one (even at home) in the Count’s voice “I vood like a Count CHOCULA!” LMAO.

Enjoy your weekend everyone. Linda, congratulations on the new granddaughter. I love her name.

Apparently I had a lot to saw about second sight in the Scottish Highlands. Yay Nella!!!!! You rock “The Stand” little girl!
Your girls are so beautiful and sweet, you are very blessed indeed. I know how much I love kissing my little girls faces, with littles like yours I am sure there is lots of mushing going on in your home, too. How do we get anything else done?
Oh, and I am so trying out the veggie Christmas tree. My girls have gotten so picky in the last 2 months (very frustrating because they never were before) and this might just do the trick.

Nella is standing, Nella is standing. She is doing just amazing, Kelle. You should be so proud, as I am sure you are. Seriously, I think she is breaking records, not only stereotypes. Just to give you some reference, my son Jack sat at 10 months, crawled at 12 months, stood at 14 months and walked at 22 months. Nella is one amazing little soul. Good job!

Such great strength and effort in that tiny one. Looks like you have a great physical therapist…I have to comment that it looks like he’s male, which is less common, at least around here. My son had a male PT (all other therapists were female) and he was amazing. Just the right combination of firm but playful and made my son work hard without realizing it. I credit him with my son’s ability, at age 4, to keep up with his typical peers and experience life to the fullest.

This is one of my favorite songs..EVER!! Me LOVE! Please share on secret on your favorite local pottery place that is kid friendly..I’m always afraid to take them in. And my almost 4 year old saw the tree..asked what it was, and said..”I don’t want to eat that, just decorate it”..we’ll be trying for new ideas. Around here..we do a lot of fruit..like..tons. Also graham crackers with flavored cream cheese. I can’t wait to read the other ideas! Happy day..get some rest!

Lainey will always be with her and continue to show her strength just as my big sister has always done for me. Kelle you are truly blessed to get to spend every day with your girls. You and your family fill my heart with all kinds of warm-fuzzies!

I’ve been so busy lately, that I haven’t stopped by as often as I’ve wanted to – In the past month, I’ve moved into my little jewel of a condo, newly renovated by the best son-in-law in the world – mine(!), as well as begun a new job – after a whole 6 weeks of retirement. πŸ™‚ Ah well – I never really have known what down-time truly is….and obviously like it that way.

But, the other “obvious” is that I’m not as young as I used to be – and so, each evening I promise my sleepy self that “tomorrow”, I’m going to check out Kelle and the Hamptons. “Tomorrow” has taken about 10 days to get here this time…..but, catching up with the sweetness, genuineness – and life-affirming moments you share, made the wait so worth it!

I loved seeing your adorable little Miss Nella standing up, all strong and proud – but, as joyous as it is, as a Mom, I feel a little melancholy for you too – Your baby is growing up – and of course, that’s what we all want – at the same time as we want them to stay babies for just a little longer. They have their own little ticking time-clocks though – and growing is what they do…, so we rejoice and cheer them on – and feel a little wistfulness, as we watch one stage fade to the next….

Your Lainey girl grows more gorgeous every week – and I love her Happy Face Mug…..Little Designer Girl that she is – maybe you should patent that design on her behalf! πŸ™‚

Thank-you yet again – for sharing and brightening and inspiring – and most of all for welcoming the errant readers back into your ‘small things’ world, when we’ve been distracted for abit!………Rosemary

When my little was little I made a GREAT plate at one of those places. I made a reindeer using her foot as the face/head and her hands as the antlers. It is SO precious to me now! Has a big chip out of one side, but I tell her that Santa’s reindeer tried to bite it along with the cookies! LOVE IT! Have a wonderful holiday!
