Last night, Nella’s midnight cries interrupted a dream where it was snowing. I don’t know where I was, but I do remember, about five seconds before the dream broke, I was taking my mittens off so I could use my phone to take a picture of evergreen branches, frosted in crystalized snow.
Yesterday, I cried twice from missing my family. Once didn’t count though because Sinead O’Connor was mid-chorus in Silent Night, and that song–well, all bets are off. I felt off yesterday. I blamed it on being tired, missing my family, realizing I didn’t get to do so many of the things I swore I’d do this year–like slow down. Read Christmas books every night. Chill out. All this to say, December is such an immense crescendo of anticpation and I flip out a little at the peak.
But I’m regaining my footing–surveying the scene, and it’s grand. Which is why I don’t have a lot to say today. I’m caving–burrowing into my family, reflecting on this year, feeling grateful and content and excited.
Our last home-making attempts:
Thursday night, we gathered with friends to enjoy the talents of Mikey Wax, who finished off his home concert tours this year in our neighborhood clubhouse.
He is kind and warm and fit in just perfectly with our crazy bunch–not to mention he is so talented, and his smooth soulful tunes were the perfect accompaniment for a memorable night.
He begins a radio tour next year as well as continuing his house concert tour. Check him out!
Last night we continued our hot cocoa walk tradition, trailing our festive wagon through the darkness, knocking on doors, pouring drinks and delivering off-tune reditions of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” It felt celebratory and bonding in an I-miss-my-family-but-I’m-glad-I-have-my-friends kind of way.
When it was all done, Nana Kate came home with us and the two of us settled into the couch. She admitted she cried because she missed her grandkids and I admitted I cried because I missed my family. Hello, Match Made in Heaven. We don’t just love each other–we need each other.
So, here I am–Christmas Eve–surveying the scene. Feeling thankful. Excited for this next week. And ready to step away from this keyboard…family calls.
Friday Phone Dump:
Friday Phone Dump photos are taken on the Instagram iPhone app (free) and dropped into a 12×12 collage using a photo editing software (Photoshop Elements works). I am “etst” on Instagram if you want to follow the feed.
To all of you, Merry Christmas. Have a wonderful weekend with your families.

2 nights ago I cried to my husband for the same reasons…I didn’t accomplish all of the thousand things that I had hoped to do…I didn’t hand make all of our gifts or have a party or make a pie. And I am missing my father who recently passed away. Christmas is a joyous, exciting time, but sometimes emotions pile high. I’m back in the game too though. Merry Christmas
Emily P says
It’s perfect. Holidays are so bittersweet. Missing old traditions but so excited to make some new ones. Merry Christmas!
Happiness is... says
Great card. Makes me think back to your post where you explained how the experience worked this year – you honking the horn, Brett taking forever, cutting the sleeves of one of the boy’s shirts, girls fussing. Funny. That stress doesn’t show at all – and love the pillow effect.
I am sorry that you miss your family so. I get it. I miss my family because Christmas has never been the same since my Mom died; Dad hibernates physically and emotionally. So I’m making lemonade from lemons & celebrating with Ben’s family in Martha’s Vineyard. I am so grateful for the depth of love within the house right now. It fun and exciting and loud. Gotta love loud. My cup overflows, and I am thankful. God’s heard me a good 20 times so far today.
Merry Christmas Kelle. Thank you so much for sharing your talent, thoughts, words, and images with us. You inspire me.
-Jennifer

I’m glad I wasn’t alone. I hope your anticipation for a magical Christmas has returned and that there is no disappointment or sadness or sense of being “off” in your heart over the next two days.

Merry, merry Christmas to you and all your family. May you have all of the happiness you so richly deserve in 2012.
I’m commenting to let you know how much of a difference you’ve made to me this year and how much of an impact you make with your blog.
This year has been a rough one for me, and your blog helped me through it. I turned to it in a lot of dark painful moments and it always lifted me a little. I feel like I’ve grown so much, learnt so much, and my family (2 little girls- snap!) has now found this new level of happiness and contentment. YOU are such a big part of that. Your words move me. Your pictures inspire me. Your spirit and zest for life oozes through.
Thank you so, so very much for sharing. I can’t wait for Bloom!

ahhh now I know where the pillow case finally fits in.
I’ve had tears this week too, the final rush to the line and juggling two families, one will always feel miffed. This year we headed north to be with Rob’s family, as his daughter comes to spend every second Christmas with us.
So my mother has been quietly sulking for weeks. Sadly I got stuck in the middle of an argument between her and my brother on Thursday. Like usual she let us know just how disappointed she is with us, which left me crying.
So Friday I felt very flat. But yesterday I was getting back in the groove. Hopefully Rob’s daughter wakes soon, there is much love and silliness and presents to share.

It is times like tonight that I too am missing my family. How far away they all are…it reminds me of the movie, You’ve Got Mail when Meg Ryan’s character is decorating the Christmas Tree in her little bookshop and she says…”I was thinking about it tonight as I was decorating my tree.
Unwrapping ornaments made of Popsicle sticks…
…and missing my mother so much I almost couldn’t breathe.
I always miss my mother at Christmas.”
(My Mum hasn’t passed away…this quote just resonates with me this time of year.)
Thanks for admitting some of your Christmas cards are unsent…makes me feel a little bit better about my little stack next to the computer.

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one with a meltdown day yesterday! Quite uncharacteristic for me this time of year, but it came anyway! It is our first Christmas without my dear Mother-in-law and it feels so different, so strange not to have her with us. But we will celebrate together today as an extended family and a quieter celebration tomorrow with just us. SO we choose to rejoice and be thankful for our blessings and celebrate our Saviour’s birth! Have a very Merry Christmas, Hampton family. Love the card (mine are still in a stack on the counter too!)

Hi Kelle, I’ve been following your blog since Nella’s birth and this is my first comment. hi kelle. i read your blog all the time even though this is my first time posting. i started reading when i was pregnant; you made being a mama so fun & i looked forward to it so much more because of the bliss you have. your girls are honestly two of the most gorgeous girls i have seen. you (even though u dont know because you dont know me π ) have helped me so much in my transition this past year from being a newlywed to being a mama. i didnt know how much things would change; house would be continuously messy, laundry never caught up, bottles always dirty, and nothing every fully clean. i have had such a hard time and been so hard on myself because i just can’t do it all (duh!) but i felt so inspired by you the last few months and your laid back, family first attitude. i have let things go and enjoyed the small things. i am so grateful for you for helping me. you are an amazing mom and writer. and i love the picture of nella in the fridge. merry christmas to your family.

Kelle,
I am so sorry you are missing your family. I too always get a bit teary on Christmas, it has gotten better since I had kids, but I think there is such a build-up with all the preparation and excitement leading up to the actual day and then you feel like “Now what…”. I am sure just looking at your beautiful family helps ease that feeling and reminds you of all the wonderful things to come:) Have a great week and enjoy!!
