Unfinished

July 16, 2012 By Kelle

I am undoubtedly affected by rain. When it comes in its figurative sense, I say find some yellow rain boots and go kick your heels in it. Literally, however, it makes me want to take a nap. And I’ve lost count of how many consecutive afternoons it’s rained now. Come 3:00, ominous clouds cluster overhead and shadow our home with complete idleness. In the last few weeks, I’ve started a couple essays, a home project, a closet overhaul, two to-do lists and a new calendar system for activities, but they all remain unfinished thanks to the weather. Any other time I would feel unsettled, but gray afternoons tend to be so forgiving of procrastination.

In our idleness this weekend, we enjoyed:

Saturday Morning Pancakes. Lainey’s kitchen independence has taken a leap. She can measure, stir and pour with no help. I also found out this weekend that she can change Nella’s diaper, take off her pajamas, redress her in a completely new outfit and do her hair in pigtails, all by herself. And Nella lets her.

Photobucket

The Return to Crochet. It seems very fitting with the rain. And I like the way my brain thinks–or doesn’t–while I’m lost in counting stiches.

Photobucket

Quiet Time. It’s like they just know. As if cued by the rain, the girls run off to find quiet things to do. Crafting and coloring, dolls and play kitchen. Or cutting up strips of paper and taping 100 of them to various hidden locations in the house. It happened.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Kitchen Help. My least favorite job happens to be Nella’s favorite–emptying the silverware basket in the dish washer. She passes utensils (sans knives, of course) one by one, waiting for us to say “thank you.”

Photobucket

Memory. It’s not that I let her win. It’s that age changes the way you play this game so much, I can’t compete anymore. She forgets nothing and doesn’t even try to hide her sneaky little “I’m winning” smile as she stacks match after match while I flip over the same cards every time. “You can have one of my matches,” she usually finally offers. I remember saying the same thing to my mom when we played this game almost every afternoon while my brother and sister were at school. At least I remember that.

Photobucket

Rainy Crafts. With a coupon, we scored this soft doll for under $5. I sewed on some yarn hair and Lainey painted her a face this afternoon. Her name is Kate. She has some bald spots. And a wonky right eye. But she fits most of our doll clothes, and Lainey loves that she “made her.”

Photobucket

Photobucket

Light Search. Weary of gray, I’ve been chasing good light this week. Opening blinds, pulling back curtains, heading outside anytime the sun sneaks a sliver.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

I need light.

Endcap Dance Parties.
We can’t pass a CD song sampler on an endcap in any store without Lainey stopping to push every. single. button. We have to dance to each song and only Lainey can change the buttons. Ocean Calm, Backyard Barbecue, Zen Spa, Celtic Favorites. I know them all now.

Photobucket

Puppets. Nella’s diggin’ puppets lately. This one was Lainey’s when she was little, and Brett does a mean puppet show with it–funny voices, dancing, believable movements that make it seem totally alive. I can’t compete, so I just cover his eyes and say “Boo.” And then the kids look at me blankly, like “not funny, try again.”

Photobucket

I will finish the essays soon. I will complete my home projects, finish my closet, unravel some deeper thoughts and put them into words soon. But right now, it’s raining. And unfinished seems a perfectly good place to be.

Welcome back to a past favorite sponsor, SweetSeat. After searching to find a high-quality, long-lasting, small-footprint booster chair to replace their clunky high chair, the family behind SweetSeat chairs decided to make their own. Each SweetSeat is handcrafted on the family’s San Antonio farm with help from their three small sons. It’s a perfect space saver once your child is old enough to sit at the table (Nella does just fine), and it’s easy to clean. We love that our SweetSeat is portable (we’ve taken it to friends’ houses, restaurants, the beach) and allows the girls a comfortable close spot at the family table.

We’re having the opposite issue – aside from one afternoon dancing in the rain, 100 degrees and humid and gross are making ME procrastinate. But Ellie is at a hilarious/fun/willful/maddening stage, which is keeping me on my toes.

Love the 100 strips of paper. Love.

Ahhhhh…rainy procrastination! Love it. We’re enjoying…well…pretty much everything. Life is just on one of those wonderful, fleeting, high rides right now. But I will say…half-melted ice cream covering my babies chubilicious thighs…that might be my favorite thing today.

I feel the same way about rainy days. Lots goes unfinished around here in the Pacific Northwest during the winter.
Last Saturday we had a birthday party for my five year old. And soon, will be going on a road trip to Idaho for a family wedding, will have a visit from my in-laws, will celebrate my husbands 40th birthday, and my baby girl’s 3rd birthday.
However, after the excitement of the superhero birthday party, I will be fine leaving a few things unfinished for a couple of weeks and just soak in the sun…or rain…whatever the Pacific Northwest summer has to trow at us!

I am enjoying warm, sunny days in Seattle…a treat for us. πŸ™‚ We get outside every chance we get, and we are loving it. I swear my girls save secret parts of their personalities just for being outside. My goal for the upcoming fall/winter/spring (let’s be honest, it’s Seattle) is to get outside more even if we have to bundle up and wear out the umbrellas.

It’s funny, though, because as much as I crave the sun and warmth here, I somehow miss the cooped-up rainy day feeling if we have enough in a row. Ha! πŸ™‚

My kids and I keep staring at our rain boots waiting for the opportunity to go splash in the puddle. As a FL native, the return of 3pm storms are a welcomed sight. As a kid, we could practically set our watches by them. In more recent years they were fewer and far between, which led to droughts and water restrictions. We always did our outdoor play early in the morning and spent the afternoons catching a cartoon, building indoor forts or playing cards. With a move to Newport, RI in just a few days, I will miss the afternoon storms….but definitely NOT the heat. Stay cool and dry.

I loved the predictable summer afternoon rains – my favorite thing about living in FL and perhaps the only thing that redeemed the oppressive summer heat and humidity for me.

Look at the bright side – at least you can get things started and the rain doesn’t directly trigger episodes of narcolepsy! I’m 39 weeks pregnant now and the San Francisco fog so typical of our summers makes me long for all-day naps. I’m tired, crabby and literally can’t keep up with my three year old but I still have to pack boxes for a cross-country move in a couple of weeks. I can’t seem to get my butt in gear when it comes to pretty much anything else so, please, start enough stuff for the both of us!

Rain has the opposite effect in our house…boys usually start jumping off of furniture, racing through the house at full speed. My girl, not to be left out, joins in, too. As long as no one’s crying, it’s a perfect time for me to start a project. I’d prefer them to head outside in the rain instead of ransacking the house, but we’ve had some huge, boomin’ thunder lately that has us peering out the window to see if a tree will come tumbling down.

But I’m enjoying preparing for our upcoming trip to a wintery place. We’re pulling out jeans and sweaters that have been stored away and are seeing how quickly kids really do grow out of clothes. And pinterest is great for airplane games and busy bags for long trips!

I am enjoying the Michigan heat and humidity. I know that sounds absurd, but we’re in the middle of a heat wave, blanketing the entire state in ninety degree weather and oppressive humidity so heavy, you can literally lift it. Many of us, myself included, want to complain, but the reminder that we waited for nine months for this, and that the cold will all too soon return, keeps us appreciating and enjoying the quick-lived heat.
I’m also enjoying cold root beer out of glass bottles. The neighbors give me a funny look when they find me perched on my front porch at 8am with a dark brown glass bottle in my hands, but that’s part of the enjoyment too!

I’m enjoying Bloom. I ordered it last week and it was delivered yesterday while my sweet 18 month old boy power napped after getting tubes in his ears. I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down. I had to abandon it when he got up, but as soon as he was in bed for the night, I curled up in my living room and finished it. I think the parts that spoke the loudest to me were Carin’s speech to you after Nella was born, your story about Jeremy at the conference and the party with your 28 girlfriends following Nella’s 1st birthday party.

You have such a gift for writing and our world is a better place for it. Thank you for sharing your stories and reminding us that there is so much power and love in female friendships and celebrations of life.

I recently read your book and found it to be so lovely and inspiring. Each day as I take my daughter to preschool I see two guys who have Down Syndrome cleaning at the Beef and Bun (a local burger place) before it opens and think of you and your sweet daughter. They always have smiles on their faces and look happy to be doing their job. I never look at them without thinking of your story. Thank you!

I wish our three boys under the age of 7 would learn to find quiet things to do when it rains! For them, the louder and more destructive the better. Boys πŸ™‚

Pleeeease, pass some of that rain this way! We are in a severe drought here in Eastern Ontario, and farmers and those on wells are really suffering. Supposedly it’s the worst that farmers have seen in the past 35 years. Do a rain dance for us πŸ˜‰

I can say that I am affected by the rain it makes me want to do almost nothing but after when the final drop has fallen I go out and take pictures of the raindrops left on the flowers or grass or whatever. I really liked this post πŸ™‚

Send some of your rain to Uglyhoma, too. It’s miserable here.

Looking for quiet, fun indoor games to play here, too… but for the opposite reason.

Lennon’s new thing is snuggling in our bed watching “TB”. He just snuggles deep into my chest and sucks on his little thumb. I bury my nose deep in his soft, brown hair and take in the baby smell. I love how he looks up every now and then and smiles around his thumb. It goes so fast I just try and be still and drink it all in.

Sweetseats!! Is that what they’re calling them now? I bought one recently at an antique store for $5! It has colored drawings of little kids, the kind of drawings you’d see on 1960’s greeting cards or books. I just had to have it for my granddaughter because this is what we had for my kids when they were small!

    We love it!!

I feel just the same with all the rain and gloom we’ve been having on the East-Coast. (I’m in SoFla.) Beautiful pictures. I just found you through IHF… and I’m so glad.

Giiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirl!!!!!!!!!!!! I picked up your book a few days ago and NEVER wanted it to end. I wanted to devour it in one sitting but I just wanted to make it last like cook cake.
I loved the photos. Just LOVED the amount of photos. Your family is just gorgeous and those glasses Nella had on in that pink hat shot!? So freaking cute! Jeeze Lousie. I mean, my uterus tingled. I just got married, so kids are a few years away, but nothing makes those ovaries itch than freaking cute baby shots. Both your girls! I just wanted to scoop them up and bake them cookies.

But enough about cute kids. I loved your honesty. I don’t know anyone personally with DS, just a regular customer (whom I absolutely adore for his kindness and humor). I have a neurological disorder called Neurofibromatosis, but that’s another story for another day.
Anyway, I don’t want to keep you, but I just really needed to say how awesome you are, how much I loved your honesty, your journey and you. You have such a spirit and it’s people like you that make me believe in humanity. I know a lot of people with much more severe cases of NF than myself and I love them for their advocacy and fight for awareness and for their kids. Rock on and stay awesome!

The picture of Nella helping with the silverware made me smile at the end of a day that was so crazy. My oldest loves helping with that job, though lately he’s chosen to climb on the open dishwasher instead. πŸ™‚ I think I might load up the silverware basket just for fun tomorrow!
