We’re Dancing

July 12, 2012 By Kelle

In planning my wedding seven years ago, there was a priority list for expenses. Photography was more important than flowers. Flowers were more important than cake. Cake was more important than invitations. And what the DJ was playing was damn near critical because dancing was it. It’s what I dreamed about even more than walking down the aisle. I thought about the dance floor and how happy we’d be and how many people we loved would be joining us and shedding their sport coats and high heels to get that much closer to feeling it. That high-on-life exhilaration that comes from shaking a hip, throwing a hand up, swinging your head back and accepting that yes, you might look ridiculous, but it doesn’t matter. You’re dancing.

My DJ wasn’t fantastic. In fact, I made him promise he wouldn’t play any cheesy songs, and somewhere between “Love Shack” and “I Will Survive,” I about tripped when I heard the big band introduction to “The Hokey Pokey.” Yes, The Hokey Pokey. Cued by my disgusted expression, Brett ran to ask me if I wanted him to make him stop, but you don’t stop a DJ in the middle of the song, especially at a wedding. So, we made the best of it–made a big roller rink circle and stuck our left elbows in and our whole selves out and, you know what? It was a blast. My sweet grandma, in her white hair and her pearls and her Rockport pumps–she laughed. She laughed when she put her head in and her backside out and shook it all about, and by the time “The Hokey Pokey” ripped into this fabulous Beegees remix, I didn’t care about anything. We were dancing.

My favorite moment from that day is still clear. Despite failing on “The Hokey Pokey,” our DJ came through on one song I included on our list. It was a family thing–a song we had played at parties and dinners that entire week preparing for the wedding, and the very first notes were a Cryderman siren’s call. We didn’t know what the words meant, but when the speakers announced O-zone’s “Numa Numa” with the first “Ma-ia hii, Ma-ia huu, Ma-ia hoo, Ma-ia haha,” chairs tipped over and bodies ran to dance. Cousins and nieces and nephews, friends and family–hands in the air, cheering and screaming, “This is our song” so evident by our display that even the DJ noted “Whoa, must be a family anthem.” We gave it everything we had. I think my brother even whipped out some break dancing. And I will never forget that song, that moment, that feeling of letting go and being present with the people I loved in that moment.

Tuesday night, I joined a couple of friends at a local bar that has designated Tuesday nights as special needs dance night. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and so I watched as people arrived–some I recognized from the Valentine’s Dance–and made small talk, asked questions, waited for the music to start. And when it did, so did the party. There’s something about dancing that immediately strips us all of what makes us different. With music and movement, bright lights that spin and flash colors on the wall, hands that clap and raise the roof together–we’re all just people who come to celebrate, who come to move. We call out names and clap as each person brings their game to the center of the floor. “Go Janice!” we holler. “It’s your birthday!” And we smile when Janice shakes her groove thang all the way down to the floor and rises, laughing. She smiles and says “Thank you.” We do the Cupid Shuffle, side by side. And I feel not only a surge of happiness because–why yes, we’re dancing–but I feel settled in to another level of healing. Because I can’t deny the fact that my love for Nella is partly what brings me here.

We dance. It’s a universal language, one I speak fluently and enforce in our home. My kids are bilingual, you know. They speak English and Dance.

If you live in the Naples area, come out to Fred’s (on Immokalee Road in the Sam’s plaza) on Tuesday nights at 6:30. It’s kid friendly and alive with dance. If you know of anyone with special needs in the area, invite them to come. I’d love to see this grow. And I didn’t hear “The Hokey Pokey” one time.

Enjoy a little Dancin’ with Dot session:

And for those who’ve asked about making the videos, I posted a quick instructional video on YouTube on how to compile photos, video clips and music using free software to make a video like ours.

happy day.

I’m heavily invested in car dancing myself. If a song comes on and I love it- I will move (driving or not).

Love the pictures of the girls dancing (and their dresses)!

I read this on facebook the other day, and it coincides perfectly with your dance post.
    Paraphrasing:
“It is the year 2050, and gender as we know it has ceased to exist. Instead, as each new child leaves its mother and takes the first breaths of a new world, we hear, ‘Is it human, or is it dancer?'”
    You, Kelle, are dancer.

That is exactly the thought I had for my wedding! So much so though that I didn’t trust a DJ and spent WEEKS creating the entire nights playlist, considering every detail of the tempo, timing, speed, song order…..everything. I just hired a friend with a PA system to push play at the right times. All I dreamed of was being out there shaking my groove thing with the ones I love.
Sadly, my outdoor wedding came upon a freak heat wave and it was 104 degress at 5pm, so after our first dance not a single soul went out on the floor again.
But….So glad to know a like minded soul had a successful dance party!

We have an anthem as well! So much fun, the ‘other side’ at weddings always thinks something super fantastic is happening as we rush the floor. Then we just stand in huge circle, arms embraced around one another, kicking our feet and singing/screaming “Family Tradition” at the tops of our lungs. So fun.

So awesome! My brother, who has Down syndrome would love this! He’s all about dance and always has been. For his 30th birthday (7 years ago!), we had a dance party with professional DJ and everyone, even people who don’t dance, joined him on the dance floor. He totally rocks out at weddings and people line up to dance with him. It’s totally him and I love it!

Girlfriend, it’s all about dancing and feeling the music in our house, too!! Dancing is most definitley another language. Love, love, love it!! The best is when a song comes on and Arya starts shaking it all on her own and glances back at us to see if we feel the groove too. Dancing cleanses the soul! 🙂

LOVE IT! And love your wedding story too. Numma Numma is a big song in our house too. And we love watching the different videos people have made of it on YouTube. Our favs are the Star Wars themed with Yoda breakdancing and the Misheard Lyrics (Ragu sledding Yay!) and you can also find the original translation of lyrics from their original Romainian online too. It never fails to get everyone dancing like a fool in this house! When Sarah was little and we would give her her TNI supplements daily the kids would have a dance party & hold her attention while I dosed. The 2 top fav songs? Numma Numma & Dynamite (which I heard first here on your blog!) they are still Sarah’s faves and she can’t help but move when she hears them. Our favorite version of Dynamite is a cover song by Mike Tompkins who makes EVERY single sound, from the music to the words with only his mouth and NO instruments. http://tinyurl.com/7vsefr7
Thanks for the earworm! Off to clean and pack up this house while listening to Numma Numma!

Like my sister in law says “that’s good family stuff!”…so fun…and our community does a special needs prom called Shine…such a wonderful night for the kids and families in our area!

Whenever I was stressed, “I just need to go dancing!” was always the answer 🙂 Music just makes the heart happy! One of my favorite memories growing up was our family band. Armed with kitchen pots and pans, and make shift instruments and jamming to classic rock songs always made for a good evening.

Last November, our church put on a special Thanksgiving dinner for folks with special needs. When the music came on, although it wasn’t a planned time to dance, the sweet attendees got out of their seats and started dancing. I love how music changes the atmosphere in the room and how dancing can make us all the same, even if we are different.

Every Weds. night 40 teens and young adults take a ballroom dance class for free. There are probably about 20 volunteers. The parents can join in with the line dances if they want to..electric slide, cupid shuffle but get out of the way when they start to salsa, cha-cha, rumba, and do any of the 10 ball room dances they know. They also perform for various functions around the area with their matching dresses and dance shoes for the ladies and black pants, shirts and dance shoes for the guys all provided for free!

As a dance teacher the pressure was ON at our wedding. Not only did I choreograph a sweet duet for my man and I to The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson, but we ROCKED the dance floor afterward with a BIG choreographed dance with our entire wedding party and their significant others, as well as the 3 MC’s to Cartoon hero by Aqua. A total of 22 dancers in a flash mob on the dance floor decorated with monograms of our names and the date.

I will never forget looking down and thinking to myself, “Breathe in this moment, this is what you waited your whole life for”. It was amazing.

Were you not allowed to dance, growing up? I was not at all, so now, even though I have no idea what I’m doing, I dance all around my house and pick up different small people for twirls. We have 7 kids now (2 with cystic fibrosis) and the bigger ones don’t let me twirl them anymore, but they smile and shake their heads at me. I think they secretly want to twirl!

So cool there is a Dance every Tuesday night! I teach a special education class with students of all different types of developmental disabilities in a high school. All the schools in our board get together each June and put on a Special Education prom, just for our students. We have a DJ, catered meal, the photographer – everything that would be at a ‘regular’ prom. The kids get all dressed up, hair and make-up done the works to attend. It is so much fun….even before dinner, when there is just ambient back-ground music, the kids are up dancing. All night long – can’t get them to leave! It is one of my favourite nights of the year…just seeing the pure joy on my students faces 🙂

When my husband and I were dancing the shag (our family dance) at our daughter’s wedding a friend shouted out to us that she didn’t know my husband could dance. Why, yes. Yes he can. My mama taught him how when we were dating. 😉 So yep it’s a family thing for us, too.

    Kelle,
When first hearing these kinds of stories about events such as this one, I always find myself smiling. But then, upon second thought, they often make me sad. While yes, having a great night out is amazing for these individuals deemed to have “special needs”, why then are they not included in the every night events at this bar? Wouldn’t it be a great step for society as a whole to include people of ALL abilities in their dance nights on any evening of the week? Why do these dancers need their own special night, why can’t they just hang out and dance with everyone else on whatever night they choose? Just something to think about and perhaps work on changing!

trying to figure a way to just get my husband’s company to open an office in say…naples. i’d be shaking my big ole pregnant groove thang every tuesday night for sure. and when we one day bring home our baby with ds from china, they’d join us. and our whole family could shake our groove thangs. for now, i’ll just enjoy y’alls and keep shakin’ mine in random, sometimes perceived inappropriate places.

Aw that dance video cracked me up- especially when the whole family gets in on the act!
    Dot she’s precious isn’t she?
I particularly like Nella’s floor moves. She’s a groover for sure, and I bet just like your brother predicted she will be the life of Cryderman/Hampton parties!

We were at the wedding of some close friends a few weeks ago… when Little A was cutting it up on the dance floor, impressing the masses, I had to explain that she has LOTS of practice and a fanatic coach. Hehe… We definitely do alot of dancing round here. Thanks for the beautiful post!
