So, You Think You Can Dance?

Aware of the importance of entertaining hobbies and interests outside of motherhood, I recently signed up for a modern dance class. I also wanted something that would help me be a little more aware of my posture because it resembles, as my friend Janita so beautifully worded, the dorsal fin of a captive dolphin. I did the yoga thing at the end of the summer and loved it, but I needed to spice things up. I want to move. After stumbling upon a video of Martha Graham a few weeks ago, it was a done deal. Yes. That. I want to be Martha Graham.

I actually took two semesters of modern dance in college. There was even a recital. My mom came. I played a tree. After the recital, my mom smiled, congratulated me for putting myself out there and expressed how much she loved being there. And then she slipped in a little laugh and added, “so the dancing—that was weird.” There’s a lot of—um—contorting. But there’s also a lot of leaping and swaying and this beautiful fluid movement in modern dance that makes you feel like you are powerful and fast and ethereal and can fly. Hmmm. What mythological creature would be described as powerful, fast, ethereal…with wings?  I digress.

Anyway, where were we? I thought I had this. After a couple beginner level college courses, that makes me Martha Graham, right? I mean, maybe I should jump right to the advanced class. I went into it way too confident. You guys. I wore a leotard. I mean, I covered it with yoga pants, but still.

As I was leaving for my first class, Lainey asked me where I was going.

“I’m going to a dance class,” I answered proudly.

“You mean Nella’s?” she asked, confused.

“No. Mine. Mommy’s dance class.”
 
She scrunched up her face and just stood there staring, still confused.

“Lainey, mommies do a lot of things to keep learning about the world because that’s important. That’s why I read and write a lot, that’s why I take pictures and make things. And that’s why I’m taking this class. Just like you love to learn about dance—so do I.”

Another life lesson tucked under my belt, I climbed in the car eager to bring back the ‘ol modern dancer I once was. Once I arrived, I was directed to the largest studio in the back of the building and introduced to the teacher. She was tall and lithe, and every move she made—even brushing her hair off her shoulder—was a beautiful dance. Looking at her, I felt clumpy and awkward.

A few others joined the class (wearing shorts and faded college t-shirts so now I felt like an ass for the leotard) and soon we were in warm-up mode where my confidence took a blow.

We were doing this exercise where we stood on one foot and reached back with one hand to grab the opposite foot. And then we quietly held the stance, listening to the peaceful music and focusing on the mirror. And by “we” I mean them. There were five bodies lined up in the mirror, all of them still swans. Then there was me on the far left, and my arms were flailing and I was leaning all over the place, like a boxer dodging punches, to keep from falling over.

Here’s the thing that sucks about adult modern dance classes. There are mirrors. So you have to see yourself looking like an ass.

And that’s before the actual choreography part.

When we got to choreography, our teacher (who I’ll call Beautiful Graceful Gazelle) broke it down for us.

“So, we’re going to take the first few measures of the song and do this–”

I watched as her gazelle-like body ran out to the middle of the floor and started the magic. She was counting it out: “1 and 2 and 3 and swing. O-ver, kick, jump, jump, bring it in, run and—” all the while performing this aMAZing choreographed dance while she counted. I was awestruck. It was beautiful and she looked like a goddess of light and happiness.
 
When she finished, everyone shook their head like they got it. They were stretching and plié-ing, getting ready to repeat it and I was all “WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED? You seriously got that?” Because I’m pretty sure my body can’t do that and even if it could, all I remembered was the 1-and-2 part.

But I did it because I paid for the class, and I wasn’t about to let the fear of looking stupid keep me from trying. In fact, don’t ever let the fear of looking stupid keep you from trying.

Okay. I was a disaster. Somewhere in Dance Heaven, Martha Graham buried her head and sighed. I could see the disaster in the mirror even though I tried not to look. I’m trying to think of a good analogy. I was like—an orangutan doing karate. Yes, exactly. Legs kicking all cock-eyed, arms swaying all over the place. And forget keeping the beat. There was this one part after kick, jump, cross left, chasse’ and before spin, lift, jump, jump, plie’ where you had to roll on the floor. And I thought that was simple enough—I mean, I can roll. I couldn’t really remember when that roll part came so I just stayed hunched to the floor through the entire dance, ready to roll when it came so that at least out of a hundred counts, I’d get the four rolling ones right. Hell yeah, I rolled like it was my job.

I don’t know why I couldn’t catch on when no one else seemed to have a problem, but I’ve realized my secret dreams of going on So, You Think You Can Dance and making Mary Murphy stand up and cry are over. But dammit, I can ROLL.

I’m going to try another class. So I can show my kids that I try new things and don’t give up too quickly. And so that I can laugh. I laughed a lot in class last week, pulling that dorsal fin right up nice and straight.

    This was awesome. Good for you for going! I just did my first triathlon. There were all these really fast looking people with really nice road bikes and wetsuits… then there was me with my girlie mountain bike and my speedo! And I smiled the whole time…. I might have looked silly, but I did it! And so did you, leotard and all!

    I want to try an dance class, however they do not have classes for adults any where near here, and I am the least graceful person I have ever seen. Except for my mom, I got my lack of grace from her. I am glad you had so much fun and laughs and taught your children a lesson at the same time.

    Ever try a Zumba class? Lots of shakin’ it! No one does the choreography perfectly, lots of taking it at your own pace, but it’s A BLAST! 🙂

    I’m proud of you. so proud. My face is burning is shame just reading this and I let that shame and self-consciousness stop me from doing….everything. I won’t even run in public for fear of looking stupid 🙁 My birthday is 11 days away and my goal for my new year is to go forth in the world without feeling embarrassed. Just do it. Jsut be me in the world and not worry so much about what ppl think of me. Thank you for being my inspiration.

    I give you credit for going back. My girl has danced since she was Lainey’s age (She’s still dancing at U of M – RhythM and Encore teams)and she lives for it. I went to ONE mom & daughter dance class and it was not pretty! My “Stop in the Name of Love” moves were a total fail! I love to tell people that my daughter got her talent from me, but it was glaringly obvious that night, that that she did not! And…by the way – the sweet girl who won “So You Think You Can Dance” this season, Amy Yakima, is a good friend of my daughter’s. She’s amazing, as is her family, and it was so fun to watch someone we know perform on t.v. and win! Keep up the toe tapping!

    That’s funny, I just had a similar experience trying adult ballet classes. We may not be as limber and graceful as we were when we were younger, but it sure feels good to try, right? Keep it up, if for nothing more than a good story to tell 😉

    I laughed through this whole post! Thanks for that! Now, truth be told, since I have very bad knees, I would LOVE to just be able to do what you are doing in that first picture! In yoga, my instructor is always saying, “Now is this going to be ok for your knees?” You almost always lift my day.:)

    That is awesome! I tried a pole dancing class on Monday (yes, POLE DANCING) and found myself lacking coordination and grace. Who knew it took THAT much coordination! But I tried it and laughed and I’m going back tonight!

I actually spent 4 years in college getting my degree in dance and one MAJOR lesson of the entire degree is that it is 100% ok, and actually good to fail at something. Failing means you tried something. Failing means you learned something. Mistakes are neccesary. You are supposed to suck at new things. It’s good for your soul.

    You need to sign up for a beginning ballet class. It doesn’t move as fast and it will give great posture. Oh and it will kick your butt like no exercise you’ve done before.

    I am laughing at the karate-chopping orangutan analogy. Kudos to you for getting out there. I love watching SYTYCD and dreaming of moving like they do. Except, I don’t think I have the courage to even try a beginner class. I hope you share more of this adventure in dance.

    So last year to celebrate my 32nd birthday I decided to embrace life and go out anjd do things and signed myself up for an adult beginning ballet class. I watch a hundred ballet classes a week with my girls – its beginning how hard can it be? (And I had been waiting my whole childhood to get to take that ballet class!) OMG was it hard! And this post is EXACTLY like I felt in that class!

    Oh Kelle, I loved this post. I literally laughed out loud imagining you flailing around while other people got the moves. Thank you for that. Also, I love that you tried it. I have to really work hard to not let my fear of looking stupid stop me from doing awesome stuff, and I want my daughters to feel freer. Thank you for the reminder. I plan on trying Pure Barre in a month or two (I had a baby in September), and now your earlier commenter has me scared of that…but I swear I’m going to do it anyway. 🙂

    I. AM. LAUGHING. SO. HARD.

    i can totally envision this and it KILLS me. I majored in dance in college so I know all too well the feelings you have. Hello, freshmen year beginner classes are exactly like this. it’s funny that you mentioned wearing a leotard cause something I’ve noticed is that all the beginning dancers dress the part, whereas the “seasoned” dancers far into their classes just wear whatever they want, like a scrubby shirt and shorts. it’s ironic. : ) but hey, whatever makes you feel awesome : ) I totally admire your willingness to laugh at yourself and get out there and do it again. That’s a huge, awesome example to your girls but also it’s a huge awesome example to the other adults in the class. I GUARANTEE they’re all feeling similar feelings like you. Honestly, in a setting like that the only way to keep your sanity is to do what works best for you. The way you stretch, the way you dance, the clothes you wear, the things you say to the other dancers. If you follow the way other people do it you’ll most likely just end up injuring yourself or feeling stupid. : ) It’s liberating. But then again I’m preaching to the choir. What I love about you is that you always dance to the beat of your own drum, no pun intended.

    My first Nia class, the teacher told us it was all about making your body feel “delicious”. Then she had us turn around so no one could see themselves in the mirror. HIGHLY recommended 🙂

    Dancing is not just being graceful, flexible and knowing the moves/terminology. There is a lot of memory training that has to happen. I think if you stick with it (and maybe go to a beginner class) you’ll be impressed at how much progress you’ll make in a month or two. It may not make you graceful, but your confidence will soar when you can remember the choreography beyond counts 1 and 2. Keep it up!

    Love this! I laughed, oh yes, I did! You are a much braver person than I am. I will dance for and with my boys, but around others? No, oh no. I’m not sure I was ever graceful at 6 when I was in ballet (and tap, gymnastics, twirling, piano, modeling, and acting classes); I know that at 36 I certainly would not be graceful. I posses the wicked cool ability to turn my feet backwards, and I can still, somewhat, painfully, and rather awkwardly, put my feet behind my head, but that’s about it. Kudos to you for getting out there and trying. Me? Yes, I left fear of looking stupid keep me from trying, but in my case, sometimes it’s easy to look stupid by just being me. 😉

    I absolutely loved modern dance in college, but it was super easy, we didn’t learn many steps, mostly just techniques and deep breathing. I always left feeling renewed. Now I want to try it again, even if I fall on my face (which will absolutely happen!)

    Once many years ago I did a stepping class. I figured I wasn’t graceful but it was just stepping up and down…
    Yeah well, turns out you had to move your feet and your legs IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS!!! After being embarrassed as hell I just laughed. Then I decided to do just the feet part and kept my hands at my waist. I ended up loving the class and did it two more sessions. I never got great cardio from it but I had thighs of steel!
    So just adapt and laugh, it’s all fun.

    Oh wow, I laughed so hard I cried. Not at you, but that what you described how you felt and looked. I took a class like that and felt the same way. Nice to know we all don’t start out at graceful swans. Keep Dancin’!

    Prancersizing is hilarious…and so is Laughter Yoga. I think you should stick with the dance classes and, if nothing else, you’ll develop stronger core/ab muscles and breathing technique just from laughing at your own Swan Lake 🙂

    That’s how I felt during the first 3 months of zumba. I never looked in the mirror at myself once for those 3 months. In fact, I was so naive, I thought I looked EXACTLY like the zumba instructor because she was the only person I watched during that 45 minute class…that is until I actually looked at myself in the mirror and saw how ridiculous I was-trying to hip hop and salsa and what not. I’m still horrible, but it’s my favorite time of the week, and I’m going on three years strong. 🙂

    I’m impressed! I’ve always wanted to have the courage to walk into a ballet studio at 30-something and take an adult ballet class. I never took dance as a kid. It’s on my bucket list. Thanks for the inspiration and encouragement! You rock!

    From an ex dancer, first class back is always the hardest. Guaranteed. Also, console yourself with the fact that parts of that coreography would already be familiar to those guys. And those mirrors? Kinda good for watching people around you, when said coreography kicks your butt. Keep dancing Martha!!

    Haha, this post was fantastic. Reminds me of when I tried dancing again a couple of years ago. It was pretty obvious how unco-ordinated I am, but still I went back for more lessons. 6 months later and I was still hopeless so I ate some humble pie and moved on.

    Hahaha! You just described my first ballet class after I go back from hiatus- EVERY TIME. I haven’t been for about a year, and even though I’ve been dancing since forever, that first class where everyone knows the choreography and you don’t is always horrible. Keep at it, teachers re-use steps and you’ll get it after a month or so.

    Oh my gosh, I’m DYING! This was so hysterical . . . I can totally see the hunching-waiting-to-roll posture, along with the dorsal fin you’ve got going on. Since having a child last year, I think my back now more closely resembles an 80-year-old woman than the 38 year old I am. What the heck happened? Best of luck rolling . . .

    Oh, continue to be kind to yourself! My daughter is a bit like your description.. feet have potential, arms maybe, but trying to put them together simultaneously is a disaster. Still, we go. It’s camaraderie, it’s fitness – it’s important to do things that don’t come naturally. I’m so glad you weren’t paralyzed by those initial “why am I the only one with the leotard?”. I’d expect my kids to take months to get the hang of this sort of thing.. we owe it to ourselves to be at least that kind.

    Okay, Kelle- I LOVE your blog. I love the honesty, the love for your kids, the crafty posts, the very day posts, the pictures.

    But this was far and away my favorite post yet! I literally laughed out loud reading it- which I needed, as I’m not a morning person on the best of days, and my 10-week-old is still nowhere near sleeping through the night meaning I haven’t had a “best of” day in over two months!

    Good job rolling, mama. There’s something to hold onto- you can roll with the best of ’em!

    My friend wants me to join a Zumba class. The nice thing about getting old, is you tend not to care too much about making a fool of yourself. You stick with it!

    Yes! Good for you! There is nothing quite so humbling as a dance class. Last winter, my mom and I took a zumba class and I laughed through the whole first class-I looked so ridiculous dancing!

    Good for you!! I, personally, would have done terribly at this dance class!! One. I have attention deficit disorder, and lack a little thing called “following directions”. Although I work against that fault!! Two. I am not, in the slightest, an agile person!! Look up the word “clumsy”, and I’m certain that there would be a picture of me!! Falling down ungracefully!! I am just sayin’. Keep it up, girl!! 😉

    I love this post!! I’m a dance teacher and it just warms my heart that you KEPT TRYING during class. I love that you did your best and danced even if it was embarrassing. That’s tough for a lot of people! I bet you’ve inspired some adults to take a dance class 😉 thanks for the hilarious post kelle!
    Ps, my studio has adult classes if anyone in the area wants to try it out! Dancing for Joy in Bellingham!

    Hilarious! I had this exact experience about a month ago when I thought my few years of dance would allow me to jump into an intermediate/advanced modern class. Luckily there were only 2 other people in the class and the instructor was kind enough to keep encouraging me. I too want to keep dancing, I’m just going to return to a less advanced class! Here’s to dancing like no one is watching!

    Good for you! Modern dance is pretty difficult to begin with. Maybe you can try jazz ballet. Or Zumba kind of things. You learn every lessons a few steps more… Good luck! Just keep on trying!

    LOL!!!! Recalling my beginning ballet trial lesson. Only I was the one in shorts and an old tee. It was a beginning ballet trial lesson after all. Then all the other “beginners” sauntered in: powder pink tights, dainty slippers, ballet gaits, a lot of dramatic stretching – and of course leotards. Who doesn’t own a leatard? Clumpy is indeed a good word for that feeling. 😉

    I am snorting with laughter. I took modern dance in college, too. But, no mirrors. I am sure I was terrible, but it was fun. If there are going to be mirrors involved, I’ll have to stick with my kitchen floor twirling.

    you keep going to dance class girlfriend!!!

    learning choreography is a muscle in a brain (does that make sense?) just like body muscles . . . you will find a groove and then be one of those class members who is nodding her head after gazelle shows the steps.

    I just have to say I love your blog:) I am a norweagian mother of three and I must say you have really opened my eyes about down syndrome, thank you!
    I just wanted to tip you about a new norwegian movie, where the main character has down syndrome. I just love that, he is just the sweetest guy!
    The movie is called “Detective down” and it just came out!

    I simply love to dance, can be in the shower, in the kitchen, I love to express the joy of living bodily. Life is short and God made us to great things, to praise Him by sounds and dances. So, Kelle Hampton, enjoy living and dance with the children, God bless you all.

    Kelle….I did the same thing last year. I was doing this whole fear conquering thing so I signed up for ballet. I danced for years, but I sucked so much ass. But I did it. I’m glad of the humility it brought me…..I guess.

    OMG I laughed so hard at this post. What, no pictures from the class? Well, really it didn’t need any pictures…such a great description!! God, I love how you write.

    I did ballet growing up…was going to be a professional dancer. Then I up and quit at sixteen to the shock of my parents. I’ve never taken a class since, although I’ve thought about it. What holds me back now is not being able to even touch my toes.

    Well, at least you can get into a leotard. That’s Martha G. in my book.

    haha, what a riot! You’re so brave. Don’t you find yourself being a lot more brave after kids. I love that about being a mom.

    And how serendipitous (sp) of this post! My three year old son and I were “doing” modern dance in front of a few you tube instructor’s a couple of weeks ago and I immediately started researching Martha Graham and then texted my friend who majored in dance and forced her to take an intro to Modern with me 🙂 I’m thirty. This. will. be. humbling.

    Oh man you made me laugh out loud big time!!! Not at you really but remembering my dancing days in high school….love those classes but boy I was in my own world. All I can say is, that those other girls had probably had more recent dance classes and their dance memory is probably quicker, but give it a few more classes and I’m sure youll be remembering more than just 1 and 2 and and and….roll! Haha and I totally agree never keep yourself from doing something because you think you’ll look dumb. I try to remind my kids of that by acting (ok not really acting) but by being dorky on a regular basis and laughing about it.
    Own that roll sister! Maybe you’ll be a log in the next recital 😉
