Thrifted Sister Challenge: Day & Night

February 13, 2014 By Kelle

 photo blog4_zpsc685318f.jpg

Alright, let’s have some fun.

New blog feature: the Thrifted Sister Challenge.

I’ve asked my sister to collaborate, A: because 2 sisters collaborating equals “Wonder Twins Power, Activate!” and B: because she is the Thunder of Thrifting, the Princess of Poppin’ Tags,  the Guru of Goodwill. Sister’s entire house is practically thrifted, and it looks nothing like Sanford & Son.  It’s beautiful. Because she has the magic thrift store eye. And because Midwest thrift stores are the bomb.

Since we’re already texting pictures of our thrift store finds and one-upping each other with how much we spent, it was time to bring it to the blog.

The challenge:  With $20 in our pocket, we have to hit only one thrift store in one day and find two looks within a given theme.  This month’s theme:  Day & Night.

But first.  Some thrifty thriftin’ questions.

What do you look for when you hit a thrift store?

Carin: I usually go right to the furniture and housewares…if there’s a gem back there, it’s not going to last long. I like pottery mugs and hobnail milk glass, so I’ll do a quick scan through the dishes. Same thing with cocktail and pilsner glasses. After that I’ll look through the linens. A few weeks ago, I went specifically looking for a white queen duvet and actually found one –  nice cotton, too – for $5 with matching white pillowcases for $1 each.  Then I go to the clothes. When I’m really watching my money, I look for the sale colors (all the tags are different colors). One color is always 50% off and another is always 75% off. When I look through the pants, I always look for Express Editors. Sometimes I go in aimlessly, not really looking for anything specific. And sometimes I go in with something in mind; lately, I’ve been pulling up my Pinterest app and trying to recreate an outfit from my clothes board.

Kelle:  I scan furniture first, looking for quality pieces that might transform nicely with a paint job.  I found our high chair this way – a Jenny Lind style chair that became a beautiful dining room accent with a yellow paint job.  Next, I hit dishes in search of good mugs or single plates that will make a nice addition to a pretty mix-and-match table setting.  I look for picture frames (love oval or circle frames), vintage books and good records.  For clothes, I love to look for vintage dresses, blouses, long skirts and sweaters.  And if I’m in a really good thrift store, I’ll make sure to scan their jewelry.  I love finding some big funky grandma cocktail rings.

Best thrift store purchase?

Carin: Probably a $50 couch I had in one of the nineteen places I’ve lived since my divorce. It had a nice low back and clean lines, and it was in great shape. It would have been worth having it reupholstered had I not ruined it by painting it. I’ve scored some great clothes, too – like my navy Banana Republic fitted crew sweater. Express Editor pants for work. Italian patent shoes. A down Patagonia coat. A fleece Patagonia vest with $13 in the pocket. Down bootie slippers from Restoration Hardware that had never been worn.

Kelle:  My high chair.  These gorgeous brown leather lace-up shoes that I wear in the fall. A floral blazer that I almost bought full price at Anthropologie just months before I found it in a thrift shop for $8.  My desk. Lainey’s lavender Hunter boots.

Dream thrift store find?

Carin: Something for my house. Like a Herman Miller Eames chair.

Kelle: A long Bohemian dress that’s hand-embroidered.  And maybe some cheap picture with a prized historical document worth millions buried behind the glass.

Advice for thrifters?

Carin: If you hate TJMaxx and Marshalls, you’ll hate thrifting even more. You’ll have better luck if you don’t go in looking for something specific. Go when you have a lot of time.  Thrifting can be a trap though, too. You can nickel and dime on stuff that looks great when compared to the rest of the stuff on the racks. But then when you get it home, you realize you would have never bought it had you seen it at Target or even some high-end store.

Kelle: Go without your kids.  Go with friends who don’t share your taste or else you’ll be trippin’ each other to get to the good stuff first.  And also: Be brave.  I actually love thrifting because it makes me explore crazy areas of fashion I might not be otherwise inclined to explore if I had to pay full price.  I probably wouldn’t attempt to rock a 70’s maxi dress or some funky faux fur if I had to splurge for it.

And our $20 Day/Night Looks…

Carin, Day:
American Eagle Jeans: $4.99
Eastland Loafers: $1.99
Striped Shirt: $0.99
Boys Wool Blazer: $ 0.75 (75% off $2.99)
Total = $8.72
 photo blog12_zpsb799a143.jpg
Kelle: You kind of look like Billy Elliot.
Carin: Well you dress like you think you’re on Portlandia.

Carin, Night:
Navy Button-Up: $0.50
Necklace: $1.99
Leather Boots: $2.99
Paired with own khakis
Total = $5.48
 photo blog11_zpsb1f64d37.jpg
Kelle:  Who are you looking at?

Kelle, Day:
White Zara Lightweight Sweater: $4.99
Pink Pleated Maxi Skirt: $4.99 paired with my own boots
Total = $9.98

 photo blog1_zpsf244beee.jpg
Carin: Mom will be proud of the hemline and neckline…very virtuous. Very Proverbs 31.
Kelle: I know, right?

Kelle, Night:
Vintage Diane Freis Blouse (it has cougars on it and itty bitty shoulder pads!): $5.99
Paired with my own jeggings, heels and bling
Total = $5.99

 photo blog2_zps46070964.jpg
Carin: Bloom: Memoir of a Geisha.
Kelle: Shut up.

Carin spent $14.20 and I spent $15.97 for a total of 4 looks and 2 Wendy’s frosties to go.

I once passed up two orange leather chairs – orange, I say! – only to have immediate pangs of regret and go back for them. They were gone, of course, but I’ve learned to snatch up whatever catches my eye! I love looking for things that remind me of anything and anyone from my childhood.

Or maybe I’m a horrible ‘finder.’ Either way–love this new idea! This could be your newest hashtag on IG….. #thriftingsisters and we could all play along…..oooo…..and vote! Best score: a glass lamp similar to the one Kelle has/had in Dash and Nella’s room. I used to have a hob nail white glass one when I was a girl but it broke. His one is similar enough to feel nostalgic about.

Dream score: a whole box of vintage Fire King milk glass. Preferably green but I’d love some pink or blue too. I’m a sucker for vintage Pyrex too. All the patterns and colors…

Best find: 4 pairs of boots found in 10 minutes for a grand total of $100. 3 pairs were unworn. One were Ugg clogs and another J. Crew leather riding boots. Boom!

Dream find: This question is super hard. A huge lot of vintage galvanized containers that can be repurposed into planters. Vintage toys. Lot of vintage christmas decorations in AWESOME shape.

I have 3 noteworthy finds at thrift stores: 2 American Girl dolls and 2 large bags of AG clothes for $16, a winter landscape painting that I bought for $1.50 that was appraised for $150, and a charcoal drawing of a little girl I bought for $6 that was appraised for $600. Both the painting and charcoal drawing were done by well-known artists in the midwest.

I once got two real signed, framed Dali prints – $25. The frames were sorta falling apart and when I brought them to the store to get new ones the guy was like, uh do you know what you have here?

I LOVE this post! I own a vintage furniture store, so I practically live in thrift stores. By the time I’ve scoured the furniture and home goods sections, sometimes my will to hunt has ebbed before I get to the clothes. This inspired me to get to the clothes section!

My tip for thrifting clothes: there’s always a rack near the fitting rooms where people return the clothes that have they tried on that didn’t fit. There’s usually some great stuff there that someone else did the leg work to find!

Okay, this isn’t apples-to-apples because my best score along these lines was at an estate sale, not a thrift store (though I have found many fab things at thrift stores too). My big score was a Burberry trench coat that fit me like a glove, for which I paid $3!

Thrifting is my catnip. Totally agree that I experiment more with fashion if it’s only $2.99 rather than $40!!

I actually just blogged about my thriftiness over at: http://idreamofjackie.blogspot.com/2014/01/to-thrift-or-not-to-thrift.html

My favorite spots are Savers and Arc’s Value Village (I live in freezing MN). Also known as my homes away from home. I have found Patagonia, North Face, and recently found a $1200 authentic Mulberry purse.

    Dream thrifting finds:
    1. Frye boots
    2. Cream Irish cable knit sweater
    3. 2 more placemats to complete my set that I bought at Goodwill last year
    4. Anything from Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware

My Goodwill is really down low and I have to put up with people badly needing baths. But my theory is, after a garage sale, when people want to dump their stuff, they think Goodwill first. So I go often!

Well I haven’t had a fabulous thrift shop score but I have given someone else the opportunity for a fab find. Years ago when I was doing lots of spiritual work I decided I didn’t want to be materialistic anymore so I gave a Collette Dinnigan skirt away to the op shop (we call them Opportunity Shops in Australia, and Collette Dinnigan is a fabulous Australian designer) so I always wondered about who found my CD skirt and what they said when they found it! (my spiritual searching is over and I often mourn the loss of my skirt!)

May I respectfully ask something that I’ve not seen asked yet here? Don’t you worry at all about bedbugs or roaches? I live in the city and there is a Goodwill store near by but I went in there once and it smelled old and musty! Just curious! Maybe I gotta give thrifting another try because you guys do an awesome job!

I have yet to dive into the thrifting world but I really really want to! Where I live (New Jersey) I’m not sure we even have good thrift shops at alllll but I want to try anyway. I want to look at books and kitchen things the most!

I love this post! I think my favorite find was a very vintage (but in beautiful condition) leather Dooney & Bourke handbag. I have never seen another one like it. I almost always buy my books at thrift stores and dream of finding hundred dollar bills within the pages. All I’ve found are used airline tickets, various receipts and family snapshots that someone is probably looking all over for.

My husband is the best thrifter I know. Our whole house is thrifted. Best find? The antique wooden chests that came across the ocean. I use it as a coffee table. Also a table and chairs for our daughter’s new condo. Pottery Barn dishes (we just use all their subtle colors mixed together). A leather chair and ottoman (from Crate and Barrel for 10$. I’m telling you, it’s like his obsession. But I’m not complaining. He doesn’t buy me clothes, though. We even had a “Thrift-mas” two years ago, instead of Christmas: every gift had to be either made, upcycled or thrifted. It was a huge hit with our family.

I once found a Herman miller chair on the side of the road. And my ex took it in our breakup. Ugh.

Love the outfits, but next time can y’all try to do an entire outfit for $20?

I recently got a job in an office after working at home for 17 years. My work clothes were sweats and holey T-shirts. I was able to find 5 days of clothes suitable for work, including two pairs of shoes, for $89 and change. I was thrilled, especially since I am a “substantially built” woman. Thrifting is very much the way to go!

I buy almost everything at thrift stores and consignment sales. It’s so much more affordable, and I love the thrill of scoring a great item.

If there was a way I could make thrift shopping a job, I would do it!

Ah, this is so inspirational! I have aspirations of being funky and cool enough to find things in thrift stores, but I always feel aimless and adrift in places like that. I just have a hard time visualizing the rebirth I will give certain items. But you ladies did so well!

On another note, Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your sweet family and a beautiful happy birthday to one year old Dash!!

A few years ago I lost 70 pounds and went from a size 18 to a size 4. Every piece of clothing I have (except underwear, socks and bathing suits) have come from my local Goodwill. As I lost weight I donated the bigger clothes and bought a new batch of the smaller size. I was able to look nice though out my weight loss journey.

Hi! I’m commenting a bit late…BUT – my best of all time was a Vince skirt that was $300 new and which I scored for $12. It’s army green, layered cotton with a gold sequined pattern. It’s bohemian chic when paired with a good quality white tee. Goodwill. I looked-up the tag online, out of curiosity, and found it came from a label I’d never splurge on. Whooop! I get so many compliments and have to hold my tongue from blurting “it’s from goodwilllllll.” Ugh. 😛

This is a great idea but does an outfit count when you only thrifted a shirt for one outfit and paired your $200-$300 shoes with the other? I don’t know that I think those equal 2 outfits for $20. An outfit to me is the top, bottoms and shoes using your own accessories.
Looking forward to seeing the next challenge and hope it’s truly thrifted.
