Alright, let’s have some fun.
New blog feature: the Thrifted Sister Challenge.
I’ve asked my sister to collaborate, A: because 2 sisters collaborating equals “Wonder Twins Power, Activate!” and B: because she is the Thunder of Thrifting, the Princess of Poppin’ Tags, the Guru of Goodwill. Sister’s entire house is practically thrifted, and it looks nothing like Sanford & Son. It’s beautiful. Because she has the magic thrift store eye. And because Midwest thrift stores are the bomb.
Since we’re already texting pictures of our thrift store finds and one-upping each other with how much we spent, it was time to bring it to the blog.
The challenge: With $20 in our pocket, we have to hit only one thrift store in one day and find two looks within a given theme. This month’s theme: Day & Night.
But first. Some thrifty thriftin’ questions.
What do you look for when you hit a thrift store?
Carin: I usually go right to the furniture and housewares…if there’s a gem back there, it’s not going to last long. I like pottery mugs and hobnail milk glass, so I’ll do a quick scan through the dishes. Same thing with cocktail and pilsner glasses. After that I’ll look through the linens. A few weeks ago, I went specifically looking for a white queen duvet and actually found one – nice cotton, too – for $5 with matching white pillowcases for $1 each. Then I go to the clothes. When I’m really watching my money, I look for the sale colors (all the tags are different colors). One color is always 50% off and another is always 75% off. When I look through the pants, I always look for Express Editors. Sometimes I go in aimlessly, not really looking for anything specific. And sometimes I go in with something in mind; lately, I’ve been pulling up my Pinterest app and trying to recreate an outfit from my clothes board.
Kelle: I scan furniture first, looking for quality pieces that might transform nicely with a paint job. I found our high chair this way – a Jenny Lind style chair that became a beautiful dining room accent with a yellow paint job. Next, I hit dishes in search of good mugs or single plates that will make a nice addition to a pretty mix-and-match table setting. I look for picture frames (love oval or circle frames), vintage books and good records. For clothes, I love to look for vintage dresses, blouses, long skirts and sweaters. And if I’m in a really good thrift store, I’ll make sure to scan their jewelry. I love finding some big funky grandma cocktail rings.
Best thrift store purchase?
Carin: Probably a $50 couch I had in one of the nineteen places I’ve lived since my divorce. It had a nice low back and clean lines, and it was in great shape. It would have been worth having it reupholstered had I not ruined it by painting it. I’ve scored some great clothes, too – like my navy Banana Republic fitted crew sweater. Express Editor pants for work. Italian patent shoes. A down Patagonia coat. A fleece Patagonia vest with $13 in the pocket. Down bootie slippers from Restoration Hardware that had never been worn.
Kelle: My high chair. These gorgeous brown leather lace-up shoes that I wear in the fall. A floral blazer that I almost bought full price at Anthropologie just months before I found it in a thrift shop for $8. My desk. Lainey’s lavender Hunter boots.
Dream thrift store find?
Carin: Something for my house. Like a Herman Miller Eames chair.
Kelle: A long Bohemian dress that’s hand-embroidered. And maybe some cheap picture with a prized historical document worth millions buried behind the glass.
Advice for thrifters?
Carin: If you hate TJMaxx and Marshalls, you’ll hate thrifting even more. You’ll have better luck if you don’t go in looking for something specific. Go when you have a lot of time. Thrifting can be a trap though, too. You can nickel and dime on stuff that looks great when compared to the rest of the stuff on the racks. But then when you get it home, you realize you would have never bought it had you seen it at Target or even some high-end store.
Kelle: Go without your kids. Go with friends who don’t share your taste or else you’ll be trippin’ each other to get to the good stuff first. And also: Be brave. I actually love thrifting because it makes me explore crazy areas of fashion I might not be otherwise inclined to explore if I had to pay full price. I probably wouldn’t attempt to rock a 70’s maxi dress or some funky faux fur if I had to splurge for it.
And our $20 Day/Night Looks…
Carin, Day:
American Eagle Jeans: $4.99
Eastland Loafers: $1.99
Striped Shirt: $0.99
Boys Wool Blazer: $ 0.75 (75% off $2.99)
Total = $8.72
Kelle: You kind of look like Billy Elliot.
Carin: Well you dress like you think you’re on Portlandia.
Carin, Night:
Navy Button-Up: $0.50
Necklace: $1.99
Leather Boots: $2.99
Paired with own khakis
Total = $5.48
Kelle: Who are you looking at?
Kelle, Day:
White Zara Lightweight Sweater: $4.99
Pink Pleated Maxi Skirt: $4.99 paired with my own boots
Total = $9.98

Carin: Mom will be proud of the hemline and neckline…very virtuous. Very Proverbs 31.
Kelle: I know, right?
Kelle, Night:
Vintage Diane Freis Blouse (it has cougars on it and itty bitty shoulder pads!): $5.99
Paired with my own jeggings, heels and bling
Total = $5.99

Carin: Bloom: Memoir of a Geisha.
Kelle: Shut up.
Carin spent $14.20 and I spent $15.97 for a total of 4 looks and 2 Wendy’s frosties to go.
Fellow thrifters, what’s your best thrift shop score and dream thrift shop find?

I once passed up two orange leather chairs – orange, I say! – only to have immediate pangs of regret and go back for them. They were gone, of course, but I’ve learned to snatch up whatever catches my eye! I love looking for things that remind me of anything and anyone from my childhood.
I LOVE TJ Maxx and Marshalls. You’ve inspired me to try thrifting next! FTR my fave is Kelle’s day look!
I love thrift stores.
You are both so beautiful : )
What a fun post! I “thrift” in antique stores. You actually started my love of old quilts. I am starting to get kind of an obscene collection of them…
FUN post!!!
the sisterly comments are killing me!!!!!!! billy elliot?! bwa ha ha
Uh…midwest thrift stores are the best? I don’t know about that. I’m a fellow Michigan girl and you score waaaaaay better finds down in Naples. Or maybe I’m a horrible ‘finder.’ Either way–love this new idea! This could be your newest hashtag on IG….. #thriftingsisters and we could all play along…..oooo…..and vote! Thanks for the inspiration!
I got two fabulous, soft genuine leather jackets…one black, one dark brown in perfect condition. Each jacket was $12.00. I get compliments all the time and just say thank you and let people assume I paid hundreds of dollars! Love my thrift shop!
Best score: a glass lamp similar to the one Kelle has/had in Dash and Nella’s room. I used to have a hob nail white glass one when I was a girl but it broke. His one is similar enough to feel nostalgic about.
Dream score: a whole box of vintage Fire King milk glass. Preferably green but I’d love some pink or blue too. I’m a sucker for vintage Pyrex too. All the patterns and colors…
An awesome baseball shadow box – my son, an avid baseball player, has kept it for years and displays it proudly. It had vintage bball pics and a few other little “charm” like things in it and it was handmade with a beautiful maple frame. $3!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE thrift stores !!! and I love both of your looks.
I once found a brand new pair of dusty pink wool trousers from Benneton (with a $90 price tag) for $9 and a blue linen dress from Talbot’s for $8. That was a great day
Where does Carin thrift? I live about 15 minutes from Lansing, and I love to thrift, but I really only go to Goodwill. I can’t ever find the good stores here.
I love this! The finds. The sisterly commentary.
Best find: 4 pairs of boots found in 10 minutes for a grand total of $100. 3 pairs were unworn. One were Ugg clogs and another J. Crew leather riding boots. Boom!
Dream find: This question is super hard. A huge lot of vintage galvanized containers that can be repurposed into planters. Vintage toys. Lot of vintage christmas decorations in AWESOME shape.
This looks so fun. Might have to steal the idea {and give you credit} when my sister gets her new blog up and running!!

I have 3 noteworthy finds at thrift stores: 2 American Girl dolls and 2 large bags of AG clothes for $16, a winter landscape painting that I bought for $1.50 that was appraised for $150, and a charcoal drawing of a little girl I bought for $6 that was appraised for $600. Both the painting and charcoal drawing were done by well-known artists in the midwest.
LOVE this post! And you are both so beautiful! I am a thriftaholic.
I bought a 1950’s Kay Bojesen teak hippo toy for $4.99 and sold it on eBay for $1000. Best. Find. Ever.
I once got two real signed, framed Dali prints – $25. The frames were sorta falling apart and when I brought them to the store to get new ones the guy was like, uh do you know what you have here?
I guess that’s more Antiques Roadshow than Thrifting, but it’s my best story.
I LOVE this post! I own a vintage furniture store, so I practically live in thrift stores. By the time I’ve scoured the furniture and home goods sections, sometimes my will to hunt has ebbed before I get to the clothes. This inspired me to get to the clothes section!
My tip for thrifting clothes: there’s always a rack near the fitting rooms where people return the clothes that have they tried on that didn’t fit. There’s usually some great stuff there that someone else did the leg work to find!
Okay, this isn’t apples-to-apples because my best score along these lines was at an estate sale, not a thrift store (though I have found many fab things at thrift stores too). My big score was a Burberry trench coat that fit me like a glove, for which I paid $3!
Woah! You totally need to have a spot where we can play along and post pics too. That night out top of yours is epic!
Obviously, I love this
best find: a beautiful pair of knee high vintage Frye boots for $20. Too bad I am 5 feet, and they look like hip weighters. Bought them anyway. I wear them with a thrifty grin even though I feel a bit silly in them.
Dream find: a freaking amazing chair light enough for me to haul around on my photo shoots, with modern clean upholstery and lovely vintage bones. One can dream!
I’ve also found a Jenny Lind high chair thrifting and lots of afghans and quilts, I always look for those first!
LOVE this post!!
I like buying almost new kitchen stuff, books and expensive jeans. There are some things that are ridiculous to buy new.
I’m a thriftoholic….I collect vintage Pyrex, Fire King, Jade-ite, and afghans! I’ve also started a little ceramic deer collection and a vintage thermos collection! ;-)-
I love the blushtone maxi skirt!!
Thrift shops, I love them but go way too little 🙁 need to change that!! xx
http://www.blondebutterflies.blogspot.com
Thrifting is my catnip. Totally agree that I experiment more with fashion if it’s only $2.99 rather than $40!!
I actually just blogged about my thriftiness over at: http://idreamofjackie.blogspot.com/2014/01/to-thrift-or-not-to-thrift.html
My favorite spots are Savers and Arc’s Value Village (I live in freezing MN). Also known as my homes away from home. I have found Patagonia, North Face, and recently found a $1200 authentic Mulberry purse.
Dream thrifting finds:
1. Frye boots
2. Cream Irish cable knit sweater
3. 2 more placemats to complete my set that I bought at Goodwill last year
4. Anything from Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware
Seriously I love this post. Made my night 🙂 Can I be a surrogate Cryderman/Hampton sister and play along sometime?!
Fund a fun blog in the same vein…
http://www.thriftandshout.blogspot.com
Enjoy!!!
I want to start thrifting! Well, ever since that poppin tags song, but now I really want to! You two are beautiful and what great finds!
I feel like there is NOTHING at Utah thrift stores because all the mommies love it, with reason! I am dying that you found that b e a u t i f u l pink skirt. So cute!
You both look great! But, Kelle, I have to tell you that in the right-hand “night” picture, you totally look like Liv Tyler!
LOVE this! My best find was a Z Galleries coffee table. I paid $20 and when I looked it up when I got home, it was selling on the website for $500. Winning!! I always go straight to linens and look for quilts — I have quite the summer picnic collection! Then I go to dishes and look for white serving ware. You should create an IG hashtag… Just sayin’…
Seriously, I love this post for so many reasons.
1. Because your comments to each other are hilarious
2. I needed a laugh and something fun and lighthearted
3. I love thrifting and LOVE seeing you two do it!
Thanks for sharing
Just bought my daughter’s prom dress at a consignment shop for $11! This purchase brings her dance dress total for three dresses this year to a whopping $31! I’m so lucky that my gorgeous, tall, looks good in everything girl like to thrift! It’s a thrill for her and such a relief for me! High school dances are expensive!!
Dying to the comment, “Thifting is my catnip”!!! Bah ha ha. Amazing. Just as this post was amazing. If my two month old will allow it, I going this weekend. I’d go without her but she has a boobie addiction at the moment. Lol.
I hit the fabric section now to make my up cycled rag quilts. I try not to squeal too much when I hit upon some cute fabric. My favorite finds are funky themed fabric or the kind that was supposed to make a stuffed animal.
My Goodwill is really down low and I have to put up with people badly needing baths. But my theory is, after a garage sale, when people want to dump their stuff, they think Goodwill first. So I go often!
Goodwill Hunting!
Allsquaredup.blogspot.com
So much fun! Loved this post.
Ok, I’m inspired! It’s been a while since I hit up a Goodwill. This would be a fun challenge to try with a friend!
http://www.thisperfectmessblog.com
Oh there’s too many to list…a genuine coach purse, starbuvks barista espresso machine with all accessories brand new, my sheepskin with the tag still on it…
Very funny, loved it…
Well I haven’t had a fabulous thrift shop score but I have given someone else the opportunity for a fab find. Years ago when I was doing lots of spiritual work I decided I didn’t want to be materialistic anymore so I gave a Collette Dinnigan skirt away to the op shop (we call them Opportunity Shops in Australia, and Collette Dinnigan is a fabulous Australian designer) so I always wondered about who found my CD skirt and what they said when they found it! (my spiritual searching is over and I often mourn the loss of my skirt!)
Too many to list…I can’t recall the last time I shopped in a regular store.
I do want to say that I am glad to see another person shop in the kids’ department. At my last dr’s appt I was 5’2″ and 108 lbs. Not only do XL kids’ clothes fit better, but they are also cheaper 🙂
Fun! Love this new blog post idea–keep it up! I love thifting–right now I’m into white milk glass and silver plate, but I need encouragement to search for new things.
My best thrift store find so far has been my Louis Vuitton bucket bag (large) for $35!!! I ALWAYS check the front counter where the high end items are under glass. My dream find would be a piece of old art deco jewelry or some John Fluevog shoes. Loved this post Kelle, the sister vibe is adorable!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this new feature and I love the commentary from you and your sister even more. I want to go thrifting with both of you!
The two of you are too cute for words!! I really like your advice, I have to be in the right mood, no kids and only buy what I really like – not something that’s a good deal alone (cuz it’s all a good deal). oh, and wonder twins are my favorite super hero! xoxo
Love this idea! I’ve had a lot of good finds over the years, but an autographed copy of The Bridges of Madison County might be my fave.
I love to look for clothes for my girls but not as much for myself. I need to go when I have more time!
My three girls and I love to go thrifting. I’ll give them each $5 to spend however they want and they love finding their own special things…usually tons of 80 cent stuffed animals!
I LOVE this! But once, I accidentally dropped off my dry-cleaning at Goodwill. You’re sister would have scored from my stupidity– there were three pairs of Editors in there and some really cute wool sweaters. Argh.
love love love this post! Keep ’em coming. Carin is awesome!
I swear you can write about anything and make it sounds amazing. I love this blog, since I’m a thrifter myself.
hahaha so nice! Portlandia…love it!
Kelle….
Interesting that you would post this today!! Because. Just yesterday we walked through a Salvation Army store!! 😉
–Raelyn
You guys are v cute. 🙂
(And I want Carin’s blazer.)
You should definitely pick up my friend Lara’s book. She’s a master thrifter and her book has great tips…
http://www.amazon.com/Brake-Yard-Sales-Auctions-Occasional/dp/1584799226
Okay, I feel like I remember that Carin lives in my ‘hood and I need to know what Goodwill she’s hitting that has tag sales and .99 cent striped t-shirts. The Goodwill on side of Lansing is staunchly $3.69/shirt and $3.99/pants.
I think I had more fun reading what you two thought of each others looks!!! Hilarious!!!
I love this new addition to your blog! I am addicted to thrift stores too, we try to go once a week and we usually come home with a few new treasures 🙂
My latest fab find was a glass cake display dome for $4. It is currently sitting on our counter and there is a full plate of muffins in it. Even my husband said it was the best deal ever.
Goodwill is my escape I just love it.
Best finds-
Barbie Powerwheels Jeep 9.99
Like new kids Patagonia Puff Coat 2.99
Plan Toys wooden dollhouse 1.50
Kids Burberry Skirt 2.50
This post was so fun thanks!
Such a fun post! You both have very unique styles. Love it!
sisterly comments had me laughing out loud, literally.
Your comments to each other had me laughing. Sounds like how my sisters and I would talk to each other. Love it.
Love this!! I go thrifting all the time! The scrubs I wear from work all from thrifting. I wear some Grey’s Anatomy $30 scrub pants that I found for 50% off of $2.99. And I’ve found countless furniture items at flea markets and roadside antique stores. Love it!
Can’t wait for the next Thrifting Sisters post. So Fun!!!!!
May I respectfully ask something that I’ve not seen asked yet here? Don’t you worry at all about bedbugs or roaches? I live in the city and there is a Goodwill store near by but I went in there once and it smelled old and musty! Just curious! Maybe I gotta give thrifting another try because you guys do an awesome job!
I love this and can’t wait to see more!
I have yet to dive into the thrifting world but I really really want to! Where I live (New Jersey) I’m not sure we even have good thrift shops at alllll but I want to try anyway. I want to look at books and kitchen things the most!
I love this post! I think my favorite find was a very vintage (but in beautiful condition) leather Dooney & Bourke handbag. I have never seen another one like it. I almost always buy my books at thrift stores and dream of finding hundred dollar bills within the pages. All I’ve found are used airline tickets, various receipts and family snapshots that someone is probably looking all over for.
My husband is the best thrifter I know. Our whole house is thrifted. Best find? The antique wooden chests that came across the ocean. I use it as a coffee table. Also a table and chairs for our daughter’s new condo. Pottery Barn dishes (we just use all their subtle colors mixed together). A leather chair and ottoman (from Crate and Barrel for 10$. I’m telling you, it’s like his obsession. But I’m not complaining. He doesn’t buy me clothes, though. We even had a “Thrift-mas” two years ago, instead of Christmas: every gift had to be either made, upcycled or thrifted. It was a huge hit with our family.
P.S. I paid $5 for the purse, and I absolutely love your “night blouse.”
I once found a Herman miller chair on the side of the road. And my ex took it in our breakup. Ugh.
Love the outfits, but next time can y’all try to do an entire outfit for $20?
Bloom: Memoirs of a Geisha! Sooo funny!
I do love the sister comments….reminds me of me and mine.
My best find: a large 1950’s buffet I made into our dresser for $150. I love it!
Dream find:Headboard and footboard for our King size bed……that I would love!
I recently got a job in an office after working at home for 17 years. My work clothes were sweats and holey T-shirts. I was able to find 5 days of clothes suitable for work, including two pairs of shoes, for $89 and change. I was thrilled, especially since I am a “substantially built” woman. Thrifting is very much the way to go!
LOVE this new blog feature! You are both so creative and inspiring!
camel toe
Since when is a shirt an entire outfit?
Don’t have an Instagram account so just have to say here: OMG that photo of tiny, baby DASH…the most gorgeous baby boy in the world!! Happy Birthday to your Valentine…he’s beyond precious!!
And NOW life feels incomplete until you and Carin publish all your email correspondences in book form.
I love this feature idea. Can’t wait to see what you two come up with!
I buy almost everything at thrift stores and consignment sales. It’s so much more affordable, and I love the thrill of scoring a great item.
If there was a way I could make thrift shopping a job, I would do it!
Ah, this is so inspirational! I have aspirations of being funky and cool enough to find things in thrift stores, but I always feel aimless and adrift in places like that. I just have a hard time visualizing the rebirth I will give certain items. But you ladies did so well!
love this!
love this!
Fun post. You should do this again!
Very, very cute the way you sisters coordinated this – love the conversations/compliments of you two going at it. Totally shows how you can joke around in a very real manner! LOVE thrift stuff. Found my first born’s chest of drawers, dishes for the family, clothes, you name it!
On another note, Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your sweet family and a beautiful happy birthday to one year old Dash!!
Tejas hugs,
Melissa
LOVE this series. Can’t wait to read more!
A “Curses, Red Baron” Snoopy mug from Fire King. Bought it for $5, sold it on eBay for $100.
My husband scored an $800 Nordstrom leather jacket(currently sold there, very stylish)for $6. We rarely thrift and when we do, we find something like that!
You two make me laugh!
And Carin painting her sofa 😂 always raises a smile x
First time I’ve commented, I think. My sister and I love thrifting too, with very different tastes as well. We’re native to upstate NY where thrifting is so-so but our second home in sunny Florida yields the best thrift stores EVER!
My best goodwill finds were our hutch & dining room set from the 60’s-perfect condition and were $150 for the whole set. It’s real wood and in beautiful condition!
Have you seen the blog refashionista.net? She is amazing with her finds!!
I’m obsessed with Goodwill and ALWAYS leave with something(s). Clothes, shoes, toys for the kids, jewelry…
My husband used to think I was cray-cray, but now he has accepted it 🙂
I love this challenge! Ha what fun! I wish I had had a sister growing up. Oh well. My sister in law is pretty awesome now and I can totally see us doing this.
I love this! What a great idea. I do a lot of thrifting for my daughter but have a hard time finding things for myself. I like your words of advice – next time I am leaving the babe at home so that I can take my time and really explore.
Can I just say that I’m so mad that your thighs don’t touch!!!! That is just not right.
Your sister is a total babe. Great finds Ladies!
A few years ago I lost 70 pounds and went from a size 18 to a size 4. Every piece of clothing I have (except underwear, socks and bathing suits) have come from my local Goodwill. As I lost weight I donated the bigger clothes and bought a new batch of the smaller size. I was able to look nice though out my weight loss journey.

you.are.so.fun!
you are.so.fun!
You inspired me to hit up Goodwill over the weekend. I was very pleased with my $2.15 pair of spring/summer striped Express pants that fit perfectly! And one commenter mentioned scouring the return racks – I found myself doing that too with the same philosophy in mind!
Hi! I’m commenting a bit late…BUT – my best of all time was a Vince skirt that was $300 new and which I scored for $12. It’s army green, layered cotton with a gold sequined pattern. It’s bohemian chic when paired with a good quality white tee. Goodwill. I looked-up the tag online, out of curiosity, and found it came from a label I’d never splurge on. Whooop! I get so many compliments and have to hold my tongue from blurting “it’s from goodwilllllll.” Ugh. 😛
“Very Proverbs 31.” Cracked me up!! Such a fun post.
This is a great idea but does an outfit count when you only thrifted a shirt for one outfit and paired your $200-$300 shoes with the other? I don’t know that I think those equal 2 outfits for $20. An outfit to me is the top, bottoms and shoes using your own accessories.
Looking forward to seeing the next challenge and hope it’s truly thrifted.
love this!
love this!
A Donna Karan cashmere coat (still had the price tag on it $400). I got it for $20.
This is super fun! Very P31- love that, ha 🙂 I am a thrift store furniture junky. We live in Prague, where IKEA is king, so you can find the most fabulous old vintage stuff that no one wants anymore. Score.
You two and your commentating….hilarious! What a fun gig with your sis!!!
My best score wasn’t clothes. It was a turquoise file cabinet with vintage hardware still perfectly intact. EXACTLY the color I was planning to paint a used cabinet. Already painted and 10 bucks!
Oooh, and I can’t forget my collection of afghans!!!! I ALWAYS find them for just a few dollars. #irescueafghans
I scored an Ergo Baby Carrier for $1.00 at Salvation Army. They must not have known what it was or what it retails for. I’ve had other finds but this was my best one!!!
