Thrifted Sisters is back and now a permanent feature of ETST.
And not permanent feature as in “Oh, yay! Something new I started that I’ll forget about later,” but, like, actually real and permanent. As in, I put it in my iPhone calendar next to Dash’s doctor appointment.
Before we go into this, let me say that my sister and I have been shopping together for years. What began in the 80’s as trips to buy matching purple double velcro tennis shoes eventually turned in to two grown sisters with different styles who sometimes need each others’ opinion but all the time need connection to make those many miles between us seem a little less. So we take pictures of shoes and skirts and glasses, model looks in dressing room mirrors and text each other “Which one?” and “What do you think?” Responses vary from a blunt “hideous” and “hell no” to applause and fist pump emoticons. Sometimes we go against each others’ feedback, following our own style and fashion riskiness, but either way, it’s always nice to shop together. It’s a sister’s rite of passage.
And for the record, I can’t tell you how many stone-washed denim jumpers with embroidered roosters I sifted through to find anything halfway decent this time.
Our 2 Thrifted Looks this week include a table scene for home and one clothing look–created, combined, for $20 or less.

Kelle: Are you sleeping? And seriously, why don’t we serve water like this every day? I vow to up my lemon garnishes.
Carin: If you think this one is bad, you should see all the shots that preceded this (we should include out-takes in one of these posts).
Kelle’s Table Scene:
Wood bowl: $3.99 (I almost bought one just like this a few weeks ago, brand new for $40), Pottery Mug: $1.99, Floral Embroidered Placemats and Napkin (set of 4 each): $5 = $10.98 total
Kelle: The mug has the perfect handle too–your whole hand can fit through it for a perfect 10.0 mug-hugging score.
Kelle’s Togs:
Coral belted shirt dress…with pockets for the win: $9

Carin: Did your dog die?
Kelle: Looking down is the new looking up, okay? And what, no points for twirling? I twirled!
Carin: Twirling indeed deserves kudos. I vow to twirl.
Carin’s Togs: Polka-dot sweater: $2.99, Tank, $1.99, Forever 21 Jeans: $1.99, Necklace: $1.99, Leather Moccasins: $2.99 = $11.95 total

Kelle: Dude, you set me up. The boobs. The casual sipping. I’m going to give you huge points for the yellow polka dots though. And your thrift shops have way better jeans than ours. I’ve never found skinny jeans–all we’ve got are bad boot cuts and rhinestone pocket jeans.
Carin: Set-up not intended…all credits go to my girls who took turns photographing. The casual sipping is practice for an upcoming happy hour I am hosting soon (hey, we should each plan a dinner party and post the process!). I was thinking your vignette totally trumped mine – it’s like a spread out of Real Simple! Love the wood bowl – I’m adding to my wanted list. And, props on passing up bad jeans.
Kelle: Dinner party challenge accepted.
Popina Swimsuit Giveaway Winner (loved reading all the kind things people have done and now have a nice stash pile of ideas for kindness…and kudos to all those amazing husbands out there takin’ nice care of their women)
Comment #641, Our Life Version 5.0
The nicest thing someone has done for me recently is sending me a genuine King Cake from Baton Rouge. I live in VA now but I am from Louisiana and miss eating a legit King Cake. My best friend from college days, sent one to us by surprise…right in the midst of me going through lots of testing with my current baby in utero (baby 4). Lots of testing, fears and concerns and prayers and the King Cake came in the midst of that. Loved. That’s how I felt.
Congrats, Our Life Version 5.0. Please e-mail your contact info to kellehamptonblog@comcast.net with the subject line “giveaway winner”.

I really want to rush out the thrift store now, thanks, I love this series and hope you ladies keep it up!
I love these posts!! Y’all seriously scored!
Can you tell me your secret thrift places in Naples?
Okay our thrift shops up here ARE awesome so I have no excuse for not finding eye home stuff like Carin does – amazeballs. I will say that Beth found her dress for Winterfest at Goodwill for $5.99 yay. Love the text exchanges, makes me laugh π I can’t wait to see the next installment!!
I love your dress, and Carin’s outfit. Love love love.
I LOVE this new series! Please keep it up. Also keep up the sisterly banter. π
I feel like your sister’s thrift stores have way better selection….seriously, a milk glass platter for $1!! Great post, love this permanent series (love the commentary mostest)!
What kind of thrift stores do you go to? Local ones? Chain ones (Goodwill, Salvation Army)? Any secrets for finding great stores? I’ve never found such great stuff before!
I agree with Heather – our thrift stores in Lansing are pretty good! I think it’s because of all those college kids around here and their trendy ways.
Nice work to both of you!!!
I wish I had such luck with thrifting. I never find anything as cute as that sweater, I want it.
I want your coral dress. And those comments between you and your sis have me rolling. Love it!
Love this series! And, she got that milk glass dish for $1??? A little bit of jealousy–jeans and milk glass are her thrifting jewels appartently.
If I may — because I live in the same city — Carin’s Goodwill has skinny jeans because there are college kids everywhere. You have retirees. That changes the merchandise. While you’re wading through the good, the old and the remarkably ugly, we’re wading through the Charlotte Russe, the Forever 21, and the is-this-a-dress-or-a-shirt?!
Our preppy J. Crew wearing college student is your formerly stylish ’40’s beauty queen. May they live, may they donate.
I love both outfits. One needs a good pair of eyes and patience to score these in a thrift store though. Even though that’s not my forte, I’m definitely inspired.
This is the most fun. It makes me want to go to goodwill. And (shield your ears) I don’t even really like goodwill. Maybe I’ll live vicariously through you guys. Maybe I’ll go. Either way…super fun!
Love this idea! I want a sister!!
kelle!! you and your sister are both so adorable in your finds~ so love the polka dots & beads – what style..and I love how you pose. you always look great. love your writing and blog.
Great post.
@Jenn,
You are so right! Ha. Love “may they live, may they donate.” Long live the thrifters.
I am obsessed with this new feature on the blog!!! I die reading your convos with each other. Also, I have serious thrifting envy.
You gals are so fun! I love all the stuff you both got!!
This really makes me wish I had a sister!! (and more time to dig through the crap at the stores around here) It is inspiring me to try and find some new, better stocked thrift stores. It really does matter what community you are in – I may venture out. Love the banter.
I’m diggin this series! Makes me wish I had a sister too! Cute stuff, and reminds me don’t think thrift is junk but a creative begin for something beautiful! Thanks!

I am loving this new series, Kelle!
My favourite piece from this post has got to be Carin’s polka-dot cardigan… you can never have too many polka-dots!
Why is it none of my thrift shop have these adorable clothes!? All I can find are sports tourney t-shirts from 1987 in XL! Maybe I need to look harder!

Holy Moly! This is flipping AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! New and fresh reasons to go to thrift stores. YES.
xo
Woohoo!!! I am so excited I won!!!
I have to say that this came at such a great time for me too.
I have had a stomach virus this week and with being pregnant with baby #4 and taking care of three young children, it has been super difficult!
And this idea of posting thrift store scores is fantastic!
love this post π and i know it wasn’t your intent but your coffee mug has me seriously craving afternoon java!
The dialog you have with your sister (posted under each picture) just made me spit out my coffee. This is such a fun idea and I love the bond you have with your sister. π Your blog always makes me smile. Thank you.
So happy this will be a permanent feature here — I love it! Definitely inspires me to think outside the box and dig a little harder for treasures. My guy loves to paw through thrift stores looking for electronics parts, and I would once just stick with him and play with my phone in annoyance (I’m terrible, I know), but your first feature inspired me to actually look around and get creative. Fun! Love the looks!
You sissers are too cute!!
Cute stuff too!
xo
I love the wood bowl! I just found an entire square wooden plate set at Goodwill. Each plate was $0.59- I bought 4. They match perfectly with my grandma’s wood salad bowls.
Love the thrifted sisters, and your banter is perfection.
wood bowl – to die for
I have the same chairs as your sister. and I am envious of her table.
that is all.
xo.
Lemon garnishes are better than caviar garnishes.
Sad, but true.
And king cakes are best from LA.
I should totes send you one.
Love this part of your blog!
Taryn (@lipglosss_and_laundry)
I love this!
Love this! Great finds! One thing: you must tell me what togs means in the US? Here in New Zealand togs are your bathing suit! (As in, I’m just getting into my togs to go for a swim.)
I love this!
Come on!! Go the rhinestones on jeans!
Very funny post, love the banter between you both.
this made me wish i had a sister. i LOVEd this. hilarious convo… then i remembered my best friend is my basically my sister. and we have very similar conversation. so now im thankful for my bff sister friend
This is so fun! I want to play.. π what is your next theme going to be?
So glad this is now a permanent feature. You should make a hashtag for Instagram where we can share our thrifted finds with each other!!
gotta say, LOVE Carin’s yellow outfit!!
I am jealous of your thrift store finds! I cannot find anything nearly as cute where I live!
I love the idea of doing this! Unfortunately I don’t have the patience for thrift shops. My mom used to drop me off and let me shop for hours. It sounds great but to a shy teenager, it was the equivalent of leaving me in line at the grocery store while she kept shopping.
I want to shop at your thrift stores. THOSE PRICES! Why are all of our Savers, Goodwill, Arc, etc stores in Minneapolis and St. Paul (& surrounding ‘burbs) so expensive?? Jeans for under $5? Unheard of. Our thrift store prices resemble Target sale prices (sometimes higher, I’d say!). That milk glass cake stand- Heaven! And that yellow necklace and polka dot sweater on Carin is perfect. Nice work ladies! π
You both got skills. And that boob comment you made cracked me up. I’m itching to go thrifting now;) I’m pretty good at it too. My friend Tamara says that one of my spiritual giftings is Commerce. π
Dang! I really love that dress! Pockets get me every time. Guess I need to go thrifting… unless you want my address to send that beaut my way π
