With the big 4-0 coming next month and all this bucket list talk, let’s jump right into the two big items that are always, in some form, on my list.
- Personal Fitness/Wellness Challenge
- Snowy cabin in the woods
That snowy cabin in the woods? Perhaps it’s growing up in the Midwest and now living in Florida, but my idea of the ultimate vacation always involves some sort of picturesque scene with snow and the people I love. Brett thinks I’m crazy, but I can’t help it–I love the magic of a good winter scene, especially knowing we don’t have to be stuck with it for months on end.
So it’s happening. In fact, it’s happening twice this winter–Chicago before Christmas and Jackson Hole after the holidays, and I’m looking forward to them as much as Christmas.
Winter adventure trips require a completely different packing list than what we’re used to though, and my first priority is keeping the kids warm. We did a Chicago trip one year where the weather was so brutally cold before Christmas, the makeshift “these will get us by” gear couldn’t quite do the job. So we’re going in strong this year, thanks to Backcountry. Winter adventures? This is Backcountry’s specialty, and they have everything one might need to not only stay warm during outdoor adventures but to enjoy everything a wintery scene has to offer.
Our cold weather packing list this year:
-
-
- Herschel Large 63L Duffel: We are big duffel users here–I love how much they can hold (especially this one!), and how easy they are to travel with. And the yellow! For reference, this duffel can hold a five-year-old.
- North Face Knit Ear Flap Hat: It fits all three of my kids, and it looks good on every one of them. Super warm and cozy, and I love how it covers their ears.
- Columbia Katelyn Crest Coat – for Nella. It’s lightweight (so when she takes it off and hands it to me to carry while we’re shopping, it won’t be too bulky), and yet soooo warm. And the furry hood slays me.
- Backcountry Turtleneck – I about died when I slipped this on. It’s thin and butter soft but fleece lined! And I love the little thumb holes.
- Fjallraven Knit Beanie
- Marmot Hoodie – for Brett
- North Face Andes Coat – for Dash. It fits him perfect, and it looks so cozy and warm.
- Under Armour Base layers – to keep the kids warm under their clothes
- Neck Gaiter – This is the magic ticket. Warm neck, warm everything. And you can pull it over your face if Chicago winter winds are fierce.
- Fitbit Blaze – So I can keep track of my training runs in the cold and keep my phone tucked away in my pocket.
- Sorel Boots – Be still my heart, I’m in love. These will last forever, and they’re as warm and functional as they are adorable.
- North Face gloves. Perfect for making snowmen.

Do I already have our duffel laid out a month before our trip just so I can gaze upon the happy wintery scene? You bet. And the kids have asked numerous times if they can try on their coats again because they are as excited as I am.
They know what I know and what Backcountry’s whole mission is based on–that these adventures can shape us for the better and that the things we experience during these adventures often go down as some of our most memorable moments in life. A late night walk during a snowstorm in Chicago is still one of my favorite memories I’ve ever shared with Lainey, and a sleigh ride in Colorado stands in my Top 5 explorations ever.
if you’re planning a last-minute winter adventure, Backcountry offers free 2-day shipping on all orders over $50. They carry the best outdoor brands and products that are both technical and stylish. We live close to Jackson Hole. Be sure and check out the Elk Refuge right outside of town. It’s free. Your kids would love checking it out either from their museum or if you’re bundled up you can take a sleigh ride out to see the elk up close!

I’m so curious what you’re doing in Chicago, I’m taking my family for the holidays and I would love to know what your plans are…you always do the best stuff with your family! Also, thanks for the gear tips, definitely picking up some neck gaiters!
