The Big Summer Post

July 5, 2011 By Kelle

Summer storms roll in just about every afternoon now. They begin with long and low thunder that rumbles in the distance and is followed by my instinctive response. I raise an eyebrow toward Brett, and he counters appropriately, as if by reflex, pulling his cell phone from his pocket in the same quick manner a cowboy draws a pistol. He taps the screen a few times and scrolls his finger until he pulls up a map with a slowly moving green dot that blinks and fades off the screen like a Pac Man ghost.

“Small storm. It will blow over in ten minutes. Nothing to worry about,” he informs. We carry on, unless of course he reports it’s a doozy in which case his boy-like excitement ignites ours, and we clamber around together in the garage, setting up beach chairs to watch the show.

Photobucket

Night storms are the best. Pajama-clad and anxious, we head outside for a sky movie right before bed and we trudge back in to fall asleep with the comfort that behind the darkness and beyond our sleep, a part of the sky is alive, awake, electric.

Night storms are to summer what extra limes are to a chilled mug of Coors Light. It’s quintessential harmony. Likewise, the essence of summer seems to be embodied deservingly in a little holiday we call Independence Day.

Photobucket

If one weekend had to represent the season, July 4th delivers.

Photobucket

I think it’s appropriate that we bask in sunshine, barbecue with friends, and splash cannonballs in the pool to celebrate a day that commemorates our country’s freedom. Live it up.

Photobucket

In an attempt to convey an age-appropriate explanation of our holiday to Lainey, I talked to her about where we live and what it means to be American. That there was a lot to love about our home from the beaches and mountains to the fact that we can have big dreams and actually hope to fulfil them. The depth of my speech obviously sunk in when she replied, “Hey, I have an idea. We can bring my American Girl doll to the parade tomorrow because it has the word American in it.”

The doll stayed home, but we did bring our patriotic getup.

Photobucket
She’s obsessed with these black glasses right now. Looks for them first thing in the morning and wears them while she eats breakfast.

Photobucket

The parade experience is interesting. I swear it gets hotter every year. For two hours, we alternate sticky babies on our hips, fashion fans out of whatever paper we can get our hands on, unglue sweaty shirts from our chests, and watch our kids as they cover their ears and crumble every time a siren sounds or a gun discharges a salute toward the sky. It’s not a comfortable experience by any means, and our exhausted trek dragging wagons, deflated balloons, and crying babies back to the car once it’s over is a testament to our enjoyment level. But not going isn’t an option. It’s tradition. It’s celebratory. It’s what we do. And looking back at the pictures, I am smiling because it deceivingly looks like oh, what joy, what a fabulous time we had.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

I’ve never considered myself an overly patriotic person, but you think about these things more when you have kids. You wave your flag and cheer at the parade, catching peanuts and candy, humming along to “The Star Spangled Banner.” And then you look down at the toddler hugged to your leg and for a second, you make a mental note not to take it for granted. There are shortcomings in our country, yes, but I am grateful for our safety, for the freedom to express ourselves and mostly…for opportunity.

Photobucket

Aforementioned flying peanuts:

This is how Lainey spent most of the parade:

Photobucket

So yes, sweaty, parched, and near heat-stroked, we celebrated. And we’ll do it again next year.

For the rest of the weekend, we wrung the goodness out of the summer sponge.

We cheered a waterski team.

Photobucket

…smeared hot tub fog off the camera lense.

Photobucket

…invited baby dolls to join us for dinner (and interesting enough, one of Lainey’s doll’s name is Hot Tub. Don’t ask). The underwear were not invited…not sure how they ended up there.

(corn recipe from our friend Steve: Drench corn in the following–a stick of melted butter with a couple teaspoons of honey, one finely chopped jalepeno and the zest from one lime. Heaven, I tell you. Dip your grilled shrimp in it, and you just done went and lost yo mind)

…watched fireworks in the driveway with friends…

…and befittingly revered the beauty of our country surrounded by family and friends at our favorite landmark.

God Bless America, Baby.

Nella started O.T. with our P.T.’s wife…how cool is that?

So, there. Big summer weekend. Fireworks. Bang Bang.

And welcome to our new sponsor, Net Nanny. With three computers in our house, two teenagers, and a four-year-old who has impressive control over the mouse, I’ve been concerned for some time now about Internet safety. We installed Net Nanny this week and were extremely impressed with how affordable it is, how easy it is to manage, and how much control it offers the administrator. The site’s testimonials speak for themselves. With online community trends changing, I feel much more comfortable that our computers are protected (and time controled!). Net Nanny is offering a generous 25% discount to blog readers. Use Code ‘hampton’ at check-out.

Two commenters on this post will be randomly chosen to win a free license to download Net Nanny for their families.

I hope your family had an enjoyable weekend.

Ooooooh, I need Net Nanny! 4 children under 8, two with computer privileges and the next one holding his breath for his turn… the real danger is when they can almost spell – my 5yr old son was looking for Sesame Street, but he’d typed in Sansom Street by mistake and was just about to click onto some gay porn when I realised what was happening. Aaaaaaargh!!!!!

We made the unforgettable mistake of forgetting a stroller for our little toddler when attending to our very fun 4th walking parade. And while my little guy walked most of the way as a proud little American, stomping in his red, white, and blue… the last 1/4 was a veritable nightmarish scene of a screaming, sweaty baby continuously halfway out of our grip. Pretty fun, if you take out the whole embarrassing amateur parents thing. LOL!

Was that the waterski team that was the entertainment before the fireworks at the Miromar Outlets?? I was there too! By far the best fireworks show I’ve seen – especially the finale…

And I’m sad I didn’t think about the parade until long after it was over. But I was sitting pool side and finally made some friends in Naples so it all worked out =)

Those summer storms really are just as much a part of summer here. I love Naples summer – even if the days can be so hot you perspire standing still and leaving the house without a cold drink is catastrophic!! For you and the littles!!

I had a big smile while reading your parade experience – been there many times & like many other families across the country….even the world….we do things such as that for the love and joy on our faces and in our hearts. It’s such a part of us and tradition that we can’t imagine NOT doing it! No matter how sweaty we are and how crazy it all seems!

Glad you had a fabulous Fourth — ours was filled with the beach, getting toasty red (our part of Red, White & Blue) and fireworks next to the beach. Fabulous day – amazing holiday.

And thanks for the recommendation on Net Nanny…we’ve been talking about needing something just like that in our home 🙂

We could so use Net Nanny here. My 10 year old is fast becoming an internet addict. His skills are also beginning to supersede my own! It would be wonderful to have something extra in my arsenal. I’d like to keep the innocence of childhood intact for as long as possible.

Nella is the sweetest little American flag I have ever seen! What did she think of the parade? So glad you enjoyed your holiday! We also had one here in Canada but it was July 1st… yay for long weekends!

Thanks for the recipe for the corn – sounds delish! Our 16 month old just tried corn on the cob for the first time the other night and she was seriously blown away. She was trying to eat the empty cob after she had eaten all the corn off it! Than she stole her big sister’s right off her plate… hahaha.

Lainey’s silly face at Isle of Capri is so totally perfect. My 4 year old is constantly giving me a similar one whenever she sees me pull out my camera.

Nella’s grin in front of Capri Cafe? OMG, too much!

We didn’t hit up a parade this year for the reasons you mentioned, but looking at your photos, I’ll think we’ll give it a try next year. Worth the effort, even if it is sticky 😉 Wondering what lens you used for those parade photos? They are so sharp!

I love – absolutely love the shot of Lainey running toward you – and of Miss Nella goin’ for the spaghetti! Little girl knows what she wants, and how to go about getting it!

“The panties weren’t invited!” ha ha! I’m so glad those kinds of things happen to the Professionals, as well. I don’t know how many times I’ve said to myself, when viewing what should have been the ‘perfect’ picture – “How.could.you.not.have.seen.that?? – I mean, really!

    Love your sparkler-heart!

Finally – if my post is picked as a winner for Net Nanny – you can throw it back in – and pick someone else, who needs it. As a 61-year old, who is in total charge of her own computer(!) – unshared – at least until my cats become computer-savvy enough to operate it – I’m OK for now! 🙂

I love watching lightning and thunder storms. At the moment I’m hanging out for snow- it’s been snowing on the mountain near the city where we work, and once every 7 years or so, we get snow that settles at sea level which shuts down everyone, cause we’re not set up for snow on roads! It usually melts by lunch, but you feel like a big kid hoping to miss out on school! I would love it to snow this year at our new hut, and have the excuse to lie inside in the warmth looking at the snow covering everything. Anyways- thanks again for sharing your life so beautifully.

Even if those pictures include a trip to the ER for an 8 year old’s broken arm!! (someday,it will be funny). Net Nanny looks awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Okay, your description of the parade was my little family to a T. We walked a mile pulling the wagon and everyone was happy on the way there. On the way back we were caught in a walking traffic jam while both kids whined and screamed and cried and I thought to myself “okay, we had fun and by next year we will totally forget this experience and do it all over again!”
    Happy Summer to YOU!

LOL! You made me laugh so much today. Our 4th of July parade was also “insanely fun’. The three year old wouldn’t get out of her safe spot – the stroller. Unless she reeeaalllyyy wanted that piece of candy calling her name. I think it was the tank that did it… Then we had the huge meltdown after ice cream and a stroller incident that thank god ended up a ok. BUT it was fun and I really hope to make it a tradition. Got to instill the American Pride in my babies who CAN become anything that their dreams make tham want to be. God Bless!

I agree with you about the pictures always making it look like you had the most perfect time, when we sometimes only remember the heat and unhappy kids. Maybe in that way, photos are more true than our own memories – they capture what we may have missed!

Also, just a cute story about your blog title and my five-year-old daughter. I was trying to explain the meaning of “enjoying the small things” to her, and the conversation went a little like this:

Me: “Small things are things like having ice cream, going out to lunch with your grandmother, or finding treasures at the dollar store.”

Kendall: (with gusto only a child could muster) “Those aren’t small things! Those are huge!”

Lesson learned. Only she was the teacher and I, the student. Love motherhood!

great pictures of fourth of july! 🙂 we don’t always get to celebrate traditional summer holidays as most, as we are farmers, taking advantage of hot summer days baling hay and such, so it’s nice to look at others celebrations and being decked out in red, white and blue. party on.

What is it about the fourth of July it is so magical. This year since our baby is only 12 weeks we decided to stay home. It was still nice to tuck my little babe in while the fireworks exploded in the distance.

We don’t have a fourth of July parade here, but we’ll be marching in the “Old Home Day” parade in our town this weekend.

There is something about the 4th of July that brings out the kid in everyone! So especially fun when you actually have little ones to share the wonder of fireworks and parades and patriotism. 🙂

Sounds like an amazing weekend. happy 4th to you and your family. We usually do fireworks in the front yard with all of our other pyro neighbors. Add to that, a BBQ, and some s’mores, and you have a classic 4th around here. Only thing missing is the parade.

love the pics! Thanks for sharing it all with all of us!

I keep thinking with each post that I will be less inspired, but nope with every post I am inspired more and more. Heck I have decided to try my hand at fondant icing for my seconds first birthday, not that you did fondant, but that you are always out to outdo yourself so here I go!

We downloaded Net Nanny about a month ago so that we could feel safe allowing our 9- and 6-year-old daughters to learn to use the computer and internet. Love it.

Caught a glimpse of Lainey’s heart-shaped patriotic sparkle tattoo from the Dollar Spot. My Amy just HAD to have those the last time we were there.

Your story about the parade is funny… the things we do because we think it’s a holiday necessity, even if we don’t really enjoy them. I never got used to parades as a kid. We went every year to the 4th of July parade and the rodeo parade (because I’m a small-town girl). They were still allowed to throw candy back then, and that’s really the only part I enjoyed. I never did enjoy the crowds or the noise or the heat as a kid, and as an adult, I pretty much refuse to go. The grandparents take my girls when they want to go, and I’m grateful they’re willing to do that.

We don’t have a parade in my town (I wonder why) but we do have a spectacular firework show. Lucky for me, I only live a mile down the road from the park so I was able to watch them from the comfort of my driveway when my 20 month old had a complete meltdown from the loud noise. I love your last picture of the sparkler heart!

    Looks like a fabulous Fourth.

I love seeing that the majority of people I “know’ went to a parade, stuck out the sticky, sweaty heat and perservered in the name of USA.

    Love Lainey’s glasses, so fun!
