Random is Good.

April 13, 2011 By Kelle

Random things.

Afternoon Light.
There’s this magic spot in our yard that glows every day come six o’clock. And by glow, I mean sunlight generously pours through the woods and breaks into these golden beams that put on a show in the patch of grass under the big tree in our side yard. As long as it’s not cloudy, I’m guaranteed to catch a beam grazing the cheeks of my girls if they’re still enough.

Photobucket

The Formidable Spider.
I am walking outside today–smiling, welcoming the sun, thinking about how much I love the $5 blue shoes I picked up in Key West–when suddenly I stepped right into the intricate web of an orb weaver spider. I knew it the second I felt its sticky threads adhere to my cheeks, and I completely flipped when I looked up to see the spiny back of this little mama just inches from my face.

Photobucket
Stay in your web, little mama.

Night Swims.
Yesterday, we used our pool for the first time this year. It’s too expensive to heat it in the winter, but the sun is a close friend now, so a dip in the pool is no longer a shocking, breath-holding experience.

Photobucket

Photobucket

But the night swims? Oh, the night swims. They are my favorite. There’s something magical about swimming in a moon-lit pool–scanning the black sky through the screen, searching for the Big Dipper, making shadow charades in the glow of the pool lights and tuning in to the accompaniment of crickets from the woods behind us. It feels very summer camp, and I hope my girls remember every bit of it.

Photobucket

Superdogs.
Our dogs are badasses in more ways than one but mostly because they have survived the torment of a toddler who dresses them, showers them, wraps them in blankets and sometimes puts them in her play kitchen stove. Okay one time, but still.

Photobucket Wonder Twin Sophie. Super power: Barking at super-canine decibels that wake babies.

We Dance.
About a year ago, Brett pulled one of his random quirky little deeds. He rigged up a boom box in our garage to play continuous music–24/7. Not just any music…Country. And we’re not even really country folk. But the very fact that this is not really a fits-with-who-we-are kind of thing thrills me. I love that I forget the music is out there. Every time I fling the garage door open at any hour of the day to fetch an extra roll of paper towel, search for duct tape or head out to the car to dig for a lost lipstick, I am pleasantly surprised by the music.

Photobucket
Hey Dad, yeah we stole your boombox. I’m gonna get you a really nice Father’s Day gift though.

Rule is: when you hear the music, you have to dance. So now, Nella knows the minute we walk into the garage, it’s bustamove time. And Girlfriend obliges.

Photobucket

I love that she knows this. I love that there was once a day when I actually thought that our diagnosis meant my little girl wouldn’t do things like this, but she does. She remembers everything, and you cannot walk through the garage with Nella on your hip without stopping to give in to her hand-clapping, head-bouncing little pleas to dance.

Knowing when to dance is an imperative trait I want my children to inherit. And, in case you wondered, the answer to when is it a good time to dance? is…
…anytime you feel like it.

Photobucket

The Two of Them.
Their bond is quiet but sure.

Photobucket

We have begun to talk to Lainey here and there about Nella’s needs. It comes up naturally and not really that often, but there have been times when, out of concern for Lainey’s feelings, I’ve wanted her to know why therapists come to play with her little sister.

We don’t say much because not much is needed to be said. But I know my girls well. And I know the big sister gets it. I just know.

Photobucket

No Explanation Needed.
I had to have them, okay?

Photobucket

Nella Sleeps. Or Not.
Nella’s not a good sleeper. She still wakes up in the night and her naps are inconsistent. I can’t do the whole let-’em-cry-it-out thing, so I usually nurse and sing and sway until she’s out. And I honestly enjoy every second of that time–watching her knead my skin, play with her feet, slow her sucking until she’s melted into a heavy little slump in my arms.

Photobucket

But lately, as still and sleeping as she seems at the end of this whole shtick, the second I carefully and quietly lay her in her crib, she miraculously shoots up and smiles. Today, I finally walked away, hoping she’d put herself back to sleep. After half an hour, I heard nothing. I was certain she’d done it–settled herself into slumber–so much I started planning the moves of my victory dance…until I walked in to confirm and found my quiet girl just like this:

Photobucket

Silent. Awake. Adorable.

Photobucket

Fine Motor.
She holds a piece of chalk like it’s her job. And she knows what to do with it. Sister colors the cement, no problem. Lainey taught her.

Photobucket

Little Friends.
Lainey’s friend spent the day with us today, and I was delighted with the dynamics of three girls–two that were off and running, one that stayed glued to her mama.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Nella’s new favorite–frozen yogurt tubes.

But they all joined forces for lunch in the woods.

Photobucket

Ebay.
Lainey grew out of her old hand-me-down cowboy boots, and she wanted real “cowboots” for her birthday party. I found these leather beauties on Ebay for $12, and I love them. The leather smells rich, feels appropriately worn-in, and there are two holes at the top, perfect for her little fingers to slip into while she pulls them on.

Photobucket

Can’t Get Enough of…

…this simple salad Heidi got me turned on to. Arugla, cilantro, half a sqeezed lime and sea salt.

I love the random, picture-heavy posts. Adore Nella’s skates.

And I can empathisize with the will-not-sleep-if-you-lay-me-down dilemma. You know they need a nap, but at what cost?

I am happy to see that my boy is finally seeming to realize that naps aren’t a bad thing. He’s gone willingly the past two weeks.

At least Nella just sits quietly instead of screaming like a banshee! :o)

And the picture of them in the white dresses is heavenly. Your mom is lucky to have little angels for her ceremony!

Love the picture of Nella in her crib. My oldest daughter was a terrible sleeper, and we never did get her to sleep in a crib. The minute we put her down, no matter how fast asleep she was, she would immediately wake up. It was frustrating to say the least. She ended up sleeping with us. I’m happy to report that she became a good sleeper by age 3 and continues to be one today at age 9. But, oh those first couple of years were HARD!

I know the majority of your readers are mothers with precious littles of their own & I’m just a 21 year old college kid, but I still relate to everything you write. I get it, Kelle. I get it and it’s beautiful.

I love your daughters & I love your family—your writing is so real that I feel like I’m a part of it sometimes. I love that you’re so free-spirited and accepting that you probably don’t think I’m crazy for saying that. And mostly, I love the way you embrace life.

Thank you for being such a source of inspiration. While I cannot wait to have littles of my own (many years from now), I am challenged to enjoy the small things that are presently in my life—the joys of ramen noodles and all-nighters in all their glory πŸ™‚

Probably my favorite post thus far (aside for the girls’ birth stories). Your blogs are changing me. I have always had a passion for children with Down Syndrome. I don’t exactly know what it is. Maybe it is because they seem to be the happiest beings on earth, or the fact that they never seem to lose their innocence. I don’t know. But- your posts have caused me to look into the possibilities of adding to our family someday, with the possibility of adopting a little gift that just happens to have Down Syndrome. I have been talking with a psychologist friend of mine, and have been trying to gather all the information I can. We are praying that God will show us where we fit in all this. But, I KNOW I want a taste of these beauty’s lives-one way or another!

Love! I love Nella’s smilin’ dancin’ face, love Lainey’s cowboots but the best part of all is their “quiet & sure” sister bond. I love that Lainey “gets” it and the way you know like only a mama can know those things. That picture of them in the hallway is precious.

And for the record… I have SO been there with the not so great sleeping baby. When all the other mommies (my best friend!) had their’s sleeping through the night at 8 weeks mine was up 5-8 times every night. It lasted about a year and a half. But I loved that too. It’s a wonder I had two more.

Happy Wednesday! And tomorrow is gonna be a great day… It’s my birthday πŸ™‚ the big 33. I should really start feeling like a grown up soon…

    XOXO,

She thinks your babies are adorable. In our house things are backwards(big brother was born with spina bifida)and she is always jealous. ahh you did it again! I teared up a little, about Lainey just KNWOING what her little sister needs. Kelle, she totally knows. My little Brynn has had such a rough year medically, constant, one thing after the other, the most important probably would be figuring otu her food allergies & getting her on the right meds for her GERD (a feat in itself, esp. when you throw dairy & soy allergies in there). I fought so hard for her, fidnign the right treatments, the right formulas, the right meds, I exhausted myself until I got it right- and TOLD the dr’s what to do. My son knows EVERYTHING about his sister. He just turned 5 on Monday, and he can tell you EVERYTHING she is allergic, what she can have, what she can’t. He never gives her anything without asking first, and he will stop someone else from doing it too. He knows she’s at the dr a lot, and he knows why, and he knows what meds she is on at any given time. He knows his sister has a special body, that is different from others. And he takes such good care, and looks out for her!! I love it. He loves her so much. πŸ™‚

As I was reading this I was thinking How??? How will my son do when the kids start school. (and for the record that is still a while away) Will he still be Dylans best friend??? Will he still love her as much as he does today??? Does he or will resent us and all the little extra time that we have to work with Dylan??? This was just on my mind and hoped that one mama could help out another with some hard painful questions. Love your post tonight and LOVE the skates.

Second, my son totally does the sleeping thing too. He’ll fall asleep on me and then as soon as I put him in his crib for a nap he’s up and chewing on his crib. (Why must he chew on the crib though!?)
Lastly, I love the sister bond. My brother and I are 6 yrs apart but as I left for college we began to get closer. It’s great what we can share so much with each other. Oh yes, because on a Saturday morning I love when he calls asking if I can take him to a tow lot to find his car that was towed the night before and maybe I could spot him the money until his next pay day. But hey, that’s part of the fun! And he is the Uncle Godfather to our son:0) Happy Wednesday!

So I often read your new posts on my iPhone while I’m pumping. Yes.

Then I’ll go check them on the computer later to hear the new song you’ve chosen to put with it – I love your playlist, I love a lot of the same music you use, and I like to choose a song that has some meaning to me when I publish a new post, too.

Sad day today. This is the message that comes across the player on your blog, and on mine.

“Due to licensing restrictions, some or all tracks may be unavailable for playback in your country.”

It’s just Canada, for pete’s sake.

    Kelle,

It made me smile to read you are sharing things with Lainey. She definitely understands Nella’s needs and talking to her about them is such a beautiful thing to do. I went to school to become a Child Life Specialist and so often I interacted with parents who did not talk to siblings about health or other issues and it made me so sad.

Also? Sookie is a horrible sleeper as well and I refuse to do cry it out too. She’s been doing better lately though.

On the no sleep front – my little daughter does the same jump awake as soon as her face hits the sheets routine. After awhile I realized that it was b/c the sheets were cold. So, I wrapped a fleece blanket over the cold sheets and it did the trick (but she still wakes up to come snuggle in the big bed as soon as my head hits the pillow)! Good luck!

K is 2 yrs and has most of “I’m Yours” memorized. On the sleeping thing, just a suggestion: My 7 month old does the same thing so I will sleep with/hold on to a blanket of hers for a while, sometime even the sheet I am planning on putting on her bed so it smells like me. When I put her down, she snuggles right up to it. Doesn’t always work, but most of the time I am pleasantly surprised.

I’m inspired by you as a mom and human being. I don’t read blogs except for my brother in law’s. But I’m drawn to yours. I’ve bookmarked it on my phone! Thanks for sharing the beauty of daily life and encouraging others to see it!

    Hi Kelle,
I comment on almost every post. Do you know that? Do you recognize my little user name? Ha ha. The pictures as always are beautiful. You little Nella reminds me so much of my little one, Olivia. Something in the expressions. Something in the eyes. Or maybe it’s the blonde hair, blue eye fair skinned, chromosome thing. Whatever it is, whenever I get done reading your blog I run over to my baby girl and give her a tight squeeze. Thank you for helping us see the beauty…everywhere.

So, now I managed exactly, to sneak a few minutes to myself and read and enjoy your post.
    Love it!
Love the skating boots (adore them, of course you had to have them!) and Nella dancing is simply adorable!

I really like your fabulous positive outlook on life and your uplifting dancing moments, discovering so many fine things in the everyday life.

Naturally I always know I’ll find that here and still it’s refreshingly surprising and for ever making me even happier.
And I’m pretty happy to begin with ;-D

The shot of Nella looking out from her crib is my favorite picture you have taken to date! If that was my baby I would shamelessly blow it up poster size and hang it for all to see. And by the way, I started my own blog this week because of you. So thank you, because so far it has been more fun than work and I did not expect the excitement or joy it would add to my little world. Keep on keepin’ on…

Just toss out any ideas of good sleeper vs bad sleeper. I’ve come to realize that my 2 year old who still wakes to nurse in the night sometimes and doesn’t always take naps for a long time by herself is the exact sleeper she needs to be. She is active, happy and thriving. It’s ME who has these crazy ideas that she is supposed to sleep for 12 hours straight or for a 3 hour nap all by herself. Once I changed my expectations, I realized she is a beautiful sleeper…for her! Savor those sweet nursing sessions and swaying…you will never regret them!!

Look into a weighted blanket for Nella. My son has one and it was a magic ticket for his restless sleep. Our PT uses weight for lots of kids with vests and different items so I started researching and found people have had lots of success with weighted blankets. More research for kids with Autism but since we discovered it was successful with Riley lots of our friends with kids with Ds and other special needs have found some help from a little weighted blanket.

When my husband asked her if she knew why people came to the house to help Maylee(20months) my 7yr said very matter of fact, because mom doesnt know how to take care of babies!! lol! She also had to do a report on her hero and she put Maylees therapist as her hero bc she helps her baby sister to walk.

My oldest was an awful sleeper, but I don’t regret any of the nights I nursed her in my bed and cuddled her. I went out and enjoyed some of that golden sunlight you speak of. So far between here in Oregon these days, but I grabbed the camera and my girls and went out to soak it in πŸ™‚

I love reading your blog and watching your family grow. I’m especially interested in little Nella. I am a special education populated with extra chromosomes. I would love for you to watch our special little christmas performance.

I realize I’m a little behind (I tend to read your blog once a week or so to catch up), but I wanted to thank you for telling us, your readers, about the challenges and rewards of a baby with DS. I have had no real experiences with anyone with it and I am the kind of person that always wants to know more and be more sensitive to all things. Nella is growing so quickly and is such a beautiful little girl. Her sweet little face (along with Lainey’s of course) bring joy to my week and I’m just glad you keep on writing and taking pictures. Your photography has inspired me so much and I’m well on my way to starting my own portrait photography business. Thanks for the inspiration from all angles. πŸ™‚
