autumn part deux (of many)

September 24, 2008 By Kelle

let’s just say it’s a used-to-live-in-the-north-but-moved-south thing…this prematurely-obsessed-with-fall craziness. ‘cuz i talked to my friend who lives across the street (from indiana) and she too is seeing a therapist for obsessively wanting to make pumpkin bread and burn ‘autumn wreath’ tarts. well, not really, but she did agree that we northerners-turned-southerners know how to appreciate autumn’s lavish blessings and it’s a good thing we go all out for these floridians who wouldn’t know a good fall if it hit ’em in the face. no offense, crackers.

so, upon seeing the early arrival of carmel apples at our local publix, i couldn’t help myself.
…and cubs ate the entire thing minus the remains of seeds and apple carcass i had to pry from her deathly grip (followed by a chorus of wails and tears).

is there anything more fallish than sticky carmel fingers and nutty baby breath? i think not.

and, i figure, at the florida rate, late september is like…well, early december. so, really, i should be christmas shopping. (and don’t even get me started on the christmas excitement button i’ve had to turn off in my brain lest i get psychotic-ally ahead of myself).

oh, holidays are divine…simply divine, and i’ll be darned if my kids (that’s one plus the many imaginary ones in my mind i want to have) don’t grow up with memories of those calendar treasures being glorified to what they ought to be… enjoyed to the very last drop.

go bake a pie. go smell an apple. relish the changing of seasons. …even if you do live in florida.

…enjoying the same-thing-as-yesterday things.

ode to autumn

September 22, 2008 By Kelle

autumn, thou doth comest and bringeth with thee…

the replacement of white roses with candy corn and candles on the mantle…

afternoons of delicious pumpkin bread and pretend hot cocoa with quaint wooden marshmallows…

thou fillest my heart with anticipation for chilly (okay…chillier) nights and crackling fires…
autumn, oh autumn, thou art beautiful…

and so is my cubs…

autumn’s kitchen keeps on givin’….tonight, it’s homemade shrimp chowder and corn bread.

…because i can’t believe she’s mine

September 20, 2008 By Kelle

my craving for alone time with my cubby, just the two of us, had to be satiated.

so, we had a date today…she in her lavender dress and maryjanes and i in my jeans and flip-flops. first it was a trip to sweet treats where i let her do her thing with her most-gigantic-sprinkled-ice-cream-cone-you’ve-ever-seen (and also happened to be the best tasting ice cream i’ve ever had…even with the sprinkles).

then (after a change out of her sticky, cone-dripped dress), it was to the library where we read bunny books, cozied up to the giant teddy bear and read to the pups. yup, there were pups in our library…a program the library runs every third saturday where kids get to cuddle up to real pups and read them stories. lainey was in heaven. dogs. books. giant teddy bears.

…and somewhere between it all, i got choked up…just looking at her and thinking…

…and i just think she’s the most amazing thing ever. so beautiful and spirited and loving, and i feel so honored to walk next to her and hold her hand and know that this little thing has a mommy…and that mommy is me. me.
and at moments, i see myself in her. and her daddy too. and somehow, we managed to get the best of both…and then a little bit of her own thing too. and i guess this isn’t news to anyone, but still…it just astounds me. especially now that her personality is being unpeeled every day…little bits of that baby cacoon breaking off, revealing our beautiful butterfly.

speaking of personality, she found a string of ball fringe in my ribbon box today and took it upon herself to put on a variety show in front of the mirror for us while we all laughed behind her…

…and yesterday, she and brandyn read books in the yard, melting our hearts (and any onlooking neighbors, i’m sure) to puddles.

(playing with ttv frames for giant photo wall project underway…)

…and our date’s not over. brett’s fishing tonight, and cubs just woke up from a late nap. we’re gunna put our jammies on and watch a movie…and maybe dance…and maybe read some more books…and maybe make hot cocoa (‘cuz that’s a little fall-ish, right).

oh, feeling so blessed.

“One of the most emotionally stirring books I’ve ever read….a reminder that a mother’s love for her child is a powerful, eternal, unshakable force.”
