A quick craft quiz for you before you proceed:
1. Do you own a glue gun?
A. It’s on my nightstand.
B. Probably but buried in a drawer somewhere.
C. What’s a glue gun?
2. Battenburg Lace is…
A. An embellished tape lace named in honor of a wedding of the Battenburg family and just one of the many kinds of lace stored in alphabetized drawers in my craft room.
B. Um, a kind of lace, I’m guessing?
C. A horse I once bet on.
3. Pinterest is…
A. A nightly routine I indulge in instead of baths…and what I’m naming my next child.
B. A cool website I occasionally turn to for ideas.
C. Solely responsible for my feelings of inadequacy in life.
4. The toilet paper’s out in your bathroom. What do you do with the cardboard roll?
A. Put it with the 200 other rolls you’ve been saving in the garage in hopes of collecting enough to make a cardboard chandelier for the play room.
B. Give it to your daughter’s kindergarten teacher who requested them for an upcoming project.
C. Throw it away. It’s been “flagged” as Seinfeld would say.
Now to determine your craft identity:
If you answered mostly A’s: Craft Master. Move over Martha! You live and breathe crafts, wake up in the middle of the night to record new ways to use pipe cleaners and own 16 different shapes of hole punchers. There’s no craft too complicated for you, and your only challenge with crafting with your children is not doing all the work for them because you love it so much (Put. The. Glue Gun. Down.). And yes, yarnbombed silverware is going too far.
If you answered mostly B’s: Congratulations, you are a Middle Crafter, enjoying an occasional opportunity to use a glue stick but refusing to turn over your guest room for craft storage. You might even own a pair of pinking shears. Glitter stresses you out but you still buy it, and your kids’ artwork is proudly hung on the refrigerator.
If you answered mostly C’s: Craft Challenged. Let’s face it–crafts stress you out. Why would anyone by choice spend hours sewing a shirt when you can go to the store and buy one already made? Your kids like making stuff, but you can’t relate. So please, dear God, send a nice craft-loving babysitter to do the work for you.
The cool thing? A, B and C are all okay.
Parenting doesn’t come with “must do crafts” fine print. But, there is a place where A, B and C parents can come together–a creativity box that arrives at your door, full of everything your kids need to imagine, create and have fun. And you can participate as much or as little as you’d like.
Our Kiwi Crate box this month was my favorite one yet–baking themed. Who would have thought to combine sponge, clay and stickers to create a two-tiered cake.
Everything we needed came in the box along with detailed child-friendly picture instructions, activity books and supplies for two projects.
The first–decorating a chef’s hat and apron before our cake decorating activity.
The cake was a hit. The girls took turns decorating it…
(Great occupational therapy practice and hand/eye coordination!)
…and Nella’s favorite part was singing “Happy Birthday” and blowing the candles out.
Kiwi Crate makes it easy for all kinds of moms (A, B, C!) to engage their children in creativity and offers high quality award-winning products across four brands for young makers ranging in age from 3 – 16. Their monthly subscription service provides all the hands-on materials you need to inspire creative, educational fun. And it all gets dropped at your doorstep. I usually put mine on the counter and save it for the perfect moment–a rainy day, a witching hour gone wrong–when my kids need something extra. We add some music while we craft and every time, it works–smiles, togetherness and that little surge of satisfaction–we made something.

Thanks! I’m trying to order one as a gift (just one box) and it isn’t 30 percent off…maybe that’s only for a year subscription.
