The Best Fall Movies

September 5, 2018 By Kelle

Pop Quiz:

Which one of the following am I most excited about this time of year?

A) Football Season
B) Tights Season
C) Chili & Cornbread Season
D) Cider & Donut Season
E) Fall Movie Season
F) All of the Above
H) None of the Above
I) A & B
J) A & E
K) C & E

Wait, did I lose you? Does your chance of getting the answer right feel slimmer and slimmer because there are so many possible combinations? Am I messing with your brain and now you just want to shut down and quit the quiz because this isn’t fun anymore? WELCOME TO AMERICAN STANDARDIZED TESTING. But don’t worry, your test scores are used for only 100% of everything schools do.

Okay, okay, it’s not really a quiz and I’ll accept a multitude of answers. But let’s just dissect “E” for the heck of it because writing about things I’m super passionate about is my favorite, and while I am super passionate about the state of America, advocating for people with disabilities and fostering a personal identity outside of motherhood, I am also passionate about finding the perfect shade of merlot nail polish for October (I’m on it!) and discussing the best scenes in movies that evoke all the cozy fall feels.

(I submit Evidence A: our first viewing of You’ve Got Mail this past weekend)
The latter brought me to compiling this list so instead of poking around Netflix for something good to watch or trying to remember what movies go well with chili and cornbread, I can pull out my trusted favorites. I’m not a big T.V. watcher and rarely sit on the couch for longer than ten minutes, but I love going through my fall/winter repertoire of movies from September on. Whether it’s putting one of these movies on in the kitchen for a Saturday session of pumpkin bread baking or huddling together as a family for our Harry Potter extravaganza (floating candles! butter beer!), these movies bring us together and make me love the season more.

Don’t even get me started on the opening scenes of You’ve Got Mail (The tights! The coat! The golden leaves scattered on New York streets!). Or Dead Poets Society–all that prep school tweed. You can practically feel the crisp fall air through the screen? I can’t even.

So here you are. From football themes and Halloween scenes to autumn city settings and cozy fall family gatherings (Dan in Real Life!), a list of my fall favorites. Want to slap one on your fridge? Print yours here.

Now go forth and huddle.

Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks have always made the cutest on-screen couple. Sleepless in Seattle is such a sweet movie. Our family also loves watching Fox and the Hound and Hocus Pocus this time of year. Thanks for your list! I know a few I’m going to add to our family’s “must watch” bucket list this fall.

I jotted down a couple of these movie titles to remind me to watch them again this autumn. Thanks for the list. I used to love football but the players disrespecting the flag is very disheartening.

Oh, I am learning so much about why they are doing it, and it is pushing me to understand more…to listen! I may not agree with everything, but I want to stay open to learn. I respectfully understand that this situation in the media is causing a lot of reactions, but I hope we can stay open to learning and sitting with our discomfort to consider the fact that there’s no way we can understand the other side if we haven’t walked in their shoes. There’s obviously so much unrest that needs attention.

Well put, Kelle. I would add that our ability to protest things we find unjust – especially in a peaceful manner – is one of the things I treasure most about this country, regardless of whether or not I exercise it regularly. I think we would all be far better off if we assumed goodness and soundness behind the reasons for these things…they truly aren’t hurting anybody and only, in my thinking, anyway, serve to inspire discussion and understanding (when we are at our best, anyway.)
And, for what it’s worth, I enjoy football, mostly for nostalgia-related reasons, but I think if we were to stop watching it, we would be more thoughtful and caring to do it our of concern for the health of the players, many of whom suffer terribly (my uncle included) once their careers are over.
(Sorry to put a damper on this cozy campfire of a post, Kelle! I really do love you…I just felt moved to add my two cents.)

I really agree with your comment Kelle. We can’t understand the actions of others unless we do, indeed, “walk in their shoes”.

You’ve Got Mail is my all time forever favorite movie. My husband and I watch it every fall. My husband one time got me a bouquet of fake flowers with freshly sharpened pencils stuck in. 🙂 Ala: “A bouquet of freshly sharpen pencils.”

I got the quiz answer immediately……All of the above. C’mon Kelle, it’s YOU!
And one more add to the movie list? Dr. Zhivago……yeah, I’m old school but those fall and winter scenes give me the feels every time. Falling leaves do something to my brain and that holiday mood kicks in and I’m a goner until New Year’s Day.

Stepmom OMG ALL THE UGLY SNOTTY CRYING! When they go for the nighttime horse ride and the little girl says to Susan Sarandan through tears, “I don’t want to say goodbye” I fall apart big time.

My favorite Halloween movie still has to be Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie.

Also, not a movie, but I know you love children’s books. Have you read ABC’s of Halloween by Patricia Reeder Eubank? My son is 16, but I still read this book (to myself) every Halloween.
