I’ve been meaning to put this list together for a while now–basically a challenge to see how many different ways we could use butcher paper in our home because we do. We use it like toilet paper, and not only has it provided easy clean-up for some crafty messes, but a sheet of butcher paper taped to the floor has provided my kids hours of entertainment on a rainy weekend.
If you buy butcher paper in a craft store, you’ll see it come in a small roll like wrapping paper, and it’s usually pricey considering how much is on the roll. The secret (shhhhh…come in closer): buy builder’s paper at a hardware store like Home Depot (found mine in the paint aisle). It’s slightly thicker, it comes on a much longer roll, and you get a bajillion yards for $10-15. Our builder’s paper roll seems to last like loaves and fishes. We use it like crazy, and there always seems to be the same amount on the roll.
So, with no further ado…our butcher paper uses:
#1: Inexpensive Wrapping Paper
We used butcher paper and yarn for all our Christmas gifts last year, and I loved the simple cohesive look it gave our tree. It’s also a fun way for kids to personalize gift wrapping with their own drawings.
#2 Decorative Table Cloth
This came about as an accident when the table cloth I wanted to use Christmas Eve was wrinkled, and I didn’t want to iron it. Instead, we covered our table with butcher paper (taped it down under the table), and painted snowflakes on top.
For Lainey’s secret agent birthday party, the table cloths I had intended on using were too short, so I covered tables with butcher paper, stamped “Confidential” all over it, and ran a line of police tape down the center.
#3 Table Guard/Easy Clean-up
My favorite and most frequent use for butcher paper is covering my tables with it for crafts and messy jobs. I tape a section down before cookie decorating, play-doh activities, painting, egg dying, etc. It protects our table and makes clean-up a breeze–leave all throw-away scraps on the paper, fold them up and toss.
#4: Floor Drawing Paper
This has especially been great for Nella. Any time the girls are itching for some entertainment, I’ll tape a large section of butcher paper to the floor and throw a handful of markers or crayons on top. Nella will sit on the floor and draw, Lainey will trace Nella’s body, and our walls go art-free. If we’re really feeling crazy, we’ll throw in some glue, sequins, buttons, etc.
#5: Road Rug
Draw out a city and roads, enlist your kids to help, and pass out Matchbox cars for some road adventures.
#6: Sorting Map
We recently made a great sorting map for our sea shells by taping butcher paper to the floor, lying all our beach finds out and letting Lainey group them and label them with a little help (using a beach life field guide).
#7: Photo Backdrop
Use your butcher paper in place of seamless photography paper for a nice clean look in portraits. We taped a piece of paper to our sliding glass doors to take these:
…and drew some funky bricks to our paper to add interest in this one:

whoa, getting a little enthusastic with that exclamation point
#8: Restaurant Busy Mat
A fun kid gift idea: Create a restaurant bag with small toys and activities to keep kids busy when they’re out to eat. Make your own busy mat by drawing fun games and questions on a section of butcher paper, roll it up, tie it and pass it on to a friend with a box of markers.
#9: Doorway Puppet Theater
Create your own doorway puppet theater by measuring a piece of butcher paper to fit a doorway (we used our kitchen). Cut a window, color in curtains, tape it to the doorway, and voila.
And if all else fails, for #10. Let’s just say, what if you run out of toilet paper? Then what are you going to do? Two words: Butcher. Paper.
Ouch.
Happy Humpday.

Your creativity amazes me… I especially love the road map… going to bring that one to my girlfriends who have little ones! Thank you for this!
I love this! Wish I had small kids again…
LOVE this, I am going out to buy me some butcher paper….my girls will LOVE all these great ideas!!!!
you are great!
FANtastic ideas!! Totally sharing this post with everyone I know š
I love that stuff but don’t have any. Guess what just got added to the shopping list. Also, super cute backdrop.
Such creative ideas. ,#10 – when the kids are old enough to need to cover their thick books, ude butcher paper, my parents always used paper grocery bags. So jealous of the shells! We live in jacksonville. On saturday we walked the beach before 8 am. All i found was a broken conch. Love reading your blog. Time to go buy some butcher paper as i have a 2 yr old boy who would love to have a track to run his cars all over.
Such neat ideas!!
First of all, that maze was kind of hard! I love all of these ideas and know that so many would come in handy for our family. Definitely have to get some butcher paper when I go to Home Depot next time. Thanks for the great ideas!
ok, all these great ideas makes me wish to be a kid again … butcher paper here I come … fun, fun, fun!!! ( :
You’re such a good Mom Kelle! Thanks for the tips! š
dollar tree by my house sells huge rolls of it—we stock and and are OBSESSED with it! Will have to try the puppet show one…super cute idea!
“TRY A BRICK WALL” Bahahahahaha!!!!! Love that I just found a roll of this in my garage.
You’re funny…
I use it for designing sewing patterns. I used to just tape pieces of printer paper together, but what a pain, plus I went through tape like I was singlehandedly keeping the Scotch company in business. Now, I just unroll my paper, sketch out the patterns and go.
Awesome!! Of course now you have to tell us where to buy some! good ideas!!!
Wonderful! You just gave me loads of ideas. Thank you!
“Our builder’s paper roll seems to last like loaves and fishes”
You are hilarious! I mean that. And this is really pretty amazing, I never would have realized the endless possibilities!
Or at least the 9 possibilities. Still a lot of possibilities.
You are THE FUNNEST. Your kids are so lucky – so so lucky! What a creative mom they have!
I love your ideas! May I add one more? My kiddos bring home summer reading words to practice. Last summer, I wrote the words out on a huge piece of card stock, but butcher paper would have been perfect for this, too. When they were able to read the word correctly, they were able to stamp out the word with those fun bingo dot markers. I love when I can sneak reading into fun activities! š
You are so creative – love it! And thank you! Another blogger I read suggested contacting newspapers to buy the end roll of newsprint, but apparently they don’t sell those out where I live since no one knew what I was talking about.
My son is just figuring out what to do with crayons so I don’t think we’ll need this quite yet – but I plan to pick some up anyhow so we are prepared when inspiration his!
My husband just bought a huge roll to use for smoking (as in preparing meat); he also recently bought a smoker. (For example: http://www.thesmokerking.com/butcherpaperbrisket.html)
I’ve already used some of it for gift-wrapping–LOVE it! Love all these suggestions as well.
You could also trace the kids’ bodies on the paper and then have them color in outfits and decorate, etc.
Fun times!
that’s so nice :)))
Such FUNtastic ideas!!! Love them all and have used some of them myself with my boys. Love the restaurant busy mat. (You are so talented and artistic Kelke!!) That one would be a great one for birthday parties with a personalized mat for each guest. I made pirate maps for the treasure hunt out of butcher paper for our son’s 4th birthday party. Crumpled it up then burnt the edges for that real pirate look. Another idea we have used it for is our family Gratitude Poster. We add each day what we are thankful for. Amazing what little minds come up with. And a great way to start conversations with your kids.
Thanks for sharing Kelle
Butcher paper+creative mamas= fun times!!
Happy summer days to all!!
Such a great post. I might be going out to buy some this afternoon!! Thanks!

you are the best. that is all. (:
Aha, I was seriously worried about that second sentence (“we use it like toilet paper”). I guess I’m a little too literal! I’m glad you found plenty of other uses for your butcher paper.
Wow what great ideas very creative Kelle.
I have been wrapping all my presents in butcher paper for a while. I love that I can personalize it with painting, yarn, etc. THE BEST! Thanks for the other ideas!
Enjoy!
Love your ideas! I have used it for wrapping presents for a while now and my kids love to decorate the paper. I’m definitely going to buy huge rolls at Home Depot from now on because you’re right, the other stuff runs out so fast!
Those are adorable ideas. I love the restaurant mats. Those are cute and I am sure easy to make as well as use.
sooo sooo cute!
Thanks Kelle!! I am so NOT a creative person and duh, didn’t even think to do this. I live here in Naples too and this has been soooo hard with the rain, rain, rain! Our lake behind the house is already past the grass line when normally that doesn’t happen until October! On top of it, my almost 6 year old came down with Pneumonia! I will head to Home Depot tomorrow if they are open! LOL!
Thanks:) Anne
Now I want some! I love brown paper packages and I love BIG paper for floor drawing. š
Two things: you didn’t come up with any of this shit on your own and you look like a dumbass because you spelled “couldn’t” wrong in your title. But no one expects decent grammar from an ex-teacher.
Such great ideas!! Well…except for number 10 š My son would love the road!
Brilliant!
My kids are grown but I may get some for the grand kids! These are great ideas!
Werdna,
Thank you for correcting my title. I always love another helpful eye for typos. It sounds as if you found something stirring enough in these ideas to take the time to leave some well-crafted words.
Stirring can lead to good, if you let it.
:o) Much love to you.
Oddvision,
Thank you! Found out from FB commenter that our Naples News sells these inexpensively.
When I was the director of an after school program I made a growth chart w/butcher paper-the kindys loved to see how much they grew throughout the year. And we also covered a wall so they could doodle-mural like.
Butcher paper rocks!
Also newsprint ends…what’s left on the roll at the newspaper printer-usually A LOT for regular people uses and is FREE in my town to homeschoolers & teachers! And very cheap for everyone else.
Love all these ideas. Ikea has huge rolls too and the price is even better there.
we love to hang it on the wall for kid Birthday Parties, I write, “Happy Birthday!” in HUGE letters and then leave out the crayons and have all the kids sign their names and draw all over it during the course of the party! Amazingly it AL.WAYS! entertains the kids!
Hi Kelle,
Love your crafty heart. Something I may have to culture in myself… but damn I want that carosel of craylola crayons now. Rob looked at me in disbelief when I showed him last night (well it was at 1am mid feed) and said can we get one? He thought I had plenty of time to wait yet before the girls are keen on crayons!
I will have a look for the builders roll of butchers (or we call in kfraft paper here).
Marian xxx
Great ideas!! Have you tried the butcher paper rolls from IKEA? $4.99!
This is brilliant! I never thought to buy Butcher Paper at Home Depot! I also love to buy Wrapping Paper at PaperSource to use to line tables for parties – so easy to use and throw!
Great ideas, love your blog!

Love this… my very favorite line was lean in & save some $$! It’s so fun looking back on some of these pics- because it brought back some fun memories of your earlier posts- never would have realized that the Christmas table was set because of a table cloth that needed ironing – it looked (and still looks!) incredible
Love the idea’s
Ingenious! Love the photo backdrop idea.

#10 – Indoor hop-scotch on a rainy day! We’ve had so many here in Atlanta this summer that my non-crafty self is having to embrace the glitter, pipe cleaners, and glue (and now butcher paper). Thank you for the awesome inspiration.
Love your ideas and those of your commenter š
My kids use butcher paper for many things as well. They really like laying on it and tracing themselves. Then they can add their own clothing and facial features. Great rainy days activities.
Fantastic!!!!
Kelle, I love this post! You are so creative! Now I need to find me some great wide roll of butcher paper!
My kids would totally turn the crayon tower upside down, though, haha!
Inspired. We go through rolls of the brown paper sold in stationary stores but the expense of buying the huge rolls always put me off. I wonder if I can buy the builders paper in NZ hardware stores too…good tip! I am off to find out!
We have a roll of paper from my husband’s job that we will be using for the great-grandkids! Great ideas.
Oh my gosh! Such great ideas! I need to start using this for play-doh activities. I just hate the mess so we don’t use it as often. The road map is great! I am going to start watching some extra kids this fall, and I can use all the creative ideas I can get!
So creative, now I just need to remember all of these great ideas.
I am a K-5 art teacher and discovered the same thing about five years ago. I love butcher paper projects! Construction paper crayons are the best, they color brightly on darker paper. By the way, our daughter Lucy, our 3rd little lady, was born April of last year with a surprise diagnosis of DS and also needing an AVSD repair. We are on the other side of surgery and life is good. My husband has started a blog to tell our story. Here is his site, http://onlovinglucy.com/
door puppet thingy – GENIUS, now where to get Butchers paper in HK. Thank you for this – I’ll definitely be stealing the ideas !
You nailed it girl! Adore you Kelle Hampton. Off to home depot I go š
Butcher paper is fabulous! My uncle gave us a HUGE roll when I was a kid and we used it for everything from drawing to wrapping to making forts. We never did use all the paper on the roll.
These are great ideas! As a future teacher, I now know what’s going first on my teacher wishlist! š And I never would have thought to buy it from Home Depot or another home improvement store, so thank you for saving me loads of money!
I have your 10th use for you. You wrap it on the cutting board you’re going to use as an easel for little feet!
I know that sounds wonky, but you can see it here:
http://www.limbdifferent.com/2013/06/road-trip.html
We always had a huge roll of this in my house growing up, and I love all the uses you posted here!
Woo hoo thanks for the tip aka secret!
Love this! Who knew there are so many uses for such plain paper! I am going to haul mine out I think!!
xx
Love, love, love these ideas! Will be using a the road map in a smaller version for a reading game in my next tutoring session.
Thanks!
wrapping paper, brilliant! I might buy a roll for that purpose alone.
Puppet window? Genious. My children thank you.

You can also call your local newspaper office to see if they sell end rolls of paper. My local paper sells newsprint rolls as well as a nice quality white paper rolls for $2 each. There is quite a bit of paper left on these end rolls and they work great for all of the ideas you listed. Thanks for some new ones; we will definitely be trying the puppet theater!
I get my paper at SAMS Club and use it to cover the tables at school in the cafeteria before a banquet. The tables are usually not clean so we cover the ick, and clean up is a snap! Plus, teens can get this done lickety split while parents set up food and make drinks!
Woohoo!!! Thanks for stating where to buy it!! I’ve used white paper from the butcher, but I love the brown so much more!
Great idea, thanks heaps, am going to check out the paint aisle at the local hardware.
Your kids are lucky, you are a great mum.

I am definitely getting some butcher paper. Thanks so much for the ideas!
Love this!
Fun! Love the inside scoop on where to buy.
I love using craft paper for wrapping gifts and for an easy rustic table cloth! Great ideas!
So adorable!
My name is Wilfred from England, I am 32 years old and I sincerely want to thank a great spell caster called Dr j lord who helped me to bring back my wife
after she had left me and my kids for good two years and six months. through out that year and six months I and my two kids called late and Kate were in great suffering until one day I came in contact with this powerful great spell caster who decided to wipe out tears away from eyes. According to my problem He decided to perform a spell service immediately and all other necessary things that has to be done an after the spell had been done He told me to wait for just 40 hours that the spell will start to take effect and so I believed and I waited for the time he had said. To my surprise, exactly the 40 hours that he had said I received a call and when I picked the call it was my wife pleading and also asking for forgiveness, at first I was amazed but later I came back to my mood and I decided to hang on the phone on her but when I terminated the call she keep on calling an I decided to switch off the phone. To my greatest surprise around 6:30am in the morning I heard my door bell ringing and I decided to open the door , to my surprise I saw my wife kneeling and begging me to forgive so I decided to forgive her and I ordered her up an I embrace her. This was how I got my wife back with the help of the great Dr .j lord viewers willing to contact him or anyone with the same problem or any kind of problem should simply contact him on this email (drjlordshrnetemple@yahoo.com) contact him at anytime and he is ready to help>>>>> HE IS A MAN

Wow, I never knew where to get it. My mom use to buy rolls from the local butchers. But that was years ago! Love this post! I love the puppet show! Ha, cute! your fellow blogger, Cheriz (www.cheriz.org)
Works good to help keep weeds away, too. Cut the weeds as low as possible, put down the paper to cover the area – a couple layers is probably good. Cover with compost, and then mulch. Still have to plant any plants in the dirt under it, just poke a hole in the paper and plant in the dirt as usual.
The paper should keep away the weeds for a year to a year and a half.
And it decomposes over time – just add another round of it and start the cycle again.
