Because I Couldn’t Think of Ten Reasons Every Home Needs Butcher Paper

July 3, 2013 By Kelle

 photo blog11_zps69d05209.jpg

I’ve been meaning to put this list together for a while now–basically a challenge to see how many different ways we could use butcher paper in our home because we do. We use it like toilet paper, and not only has it provided easy clean-up for some crafty messes, but a sheet of butcher paper taped to the floor has provided my kids hours of entertainment on a rainy weekend.

If you buy butcher paper in a craft store, you’ll see it come in a small roll like wrapping paper, and it’s usually pricey considering how much is on the roll. The secret (shhhhh…come in closer):  buy builder’s paper at a hardware store like Home Depot (found mine in the paint aisle). It’s slightly thicker, it comes on a much longer roll, and you get a bajillion yards for $10-15. Our builder’s paper roll seems to last like loaves and fishes. We use it like crazy, and there always seems to be the same amount on the roll.

So, with no further ado…our butcher paper uses:

#1: Inexpensive Wrapping Paper

We used butcher paper and yarn for all our Christmas gifts last year, and I loved the simple cohesive look it gave our tree. It’s also a fun way for kids to personalize gift wrapping with their own drawings.

 photo blog1_zps0cf9d5cf.jpg

#2 Decorative Table Cloth

This came about as an accident when the table cloth I wanted to use Christmas Eve was wrinkled, and I didn’t want to iron it. Instead, we covered our table with butcher paper (taped it down under the table), and painted snowflakes on top.

For Lainey’s secret agent birthday party, the table cloths I had intended on using were too short, so I covered tables with butcher paper, stamped “Confidential” all over it, and ran a line of police tape down the center.

#3 Table Guard/Easy Clean-up

My favorite and most frequent use for butcher paper is covering my tables with it for crafts and messy jobs. I tape a section down before cookie decorating, play-doh activities, painting, egg dying, etc. It protects our table and makes clean-up a breeze–leave all throw-away scraps on the paper, fold them up and toss.

 photo blog2_zps8afbf6fd.jpg

#4: Floor Drawing Paper

This has especially been great for Nella.  Any time the girls are itching for some entertainment, I’ll tape a large section of butcher paper to the floor and throw a handful of markers or crayons on top.  Nella will sit on the floor and draw, Lainey will trace Nella’s body, and our walls go art-free.  If we’re really feeling crazy, we’ll throw in some glue, sequins, buttons, etc.

 photo blog6_zps69839cb5.jpg

#5: Road Rug

Draw out a city and roads, enlist your kids to help, and pass out Matchbox cars for some road adventures.

 photo blog5_zpsaabb645f.jpg

#6: Sorting Map

We recently made a great sorting map for our sea shells by taping butcher paper to the floor, lying all our beach finds out and letting Lainey group them and label them with a little help (using a beach life field guide).

 photo blog4_zps300bd82c.jpg

#7: Photo Backdrop

Use your butcher paper in place of seamless photography paper for a nice clean look in portraits.  We taped a piece of paper to our sliding glass doors to take these:

 photo blog7_zpsd64e44c1.jpg

…and drew some funky bricks to our paper to add interest in this one:

 photo blog8_zps73cd8821.jpg
whoa, getting a little enthusastic with that exclamation point

#8:  Restaurant Busy Mat
A fun kid gift idea:  Create a restaurant bag with small toys and activities to keep kids busy when they’re out to eat.  Make your own busy mat by drawing fun games and questions on a section of butcher paper, roll it up, tie it and pass it on to a friend with a box of markers.

 photo blog9_zps00d1aa74.jpg

#9: Doorway Puppet Theater

Create your own doorway puppet theater by measuring a piece of butcher paper to fit a doorway (we used our kitchen).  Cut a window, color in curtains, tape it to the doorway, and voila.

 photo blog10_zps602d49a3.jpg

And if all else fails, for #10.  Let’s just say, what if you run out of toilet paper?  Then what are you going to do?  Two words:  Butcher.  Paper.

Ouch.

Happy Humpday.

Such creative ideas. ,#10 – when the kids are old enough to need to cover their thick books, ude butcher paper, my parents always used paper grocery bags. So jealous of the shells! We live in jacksonville. On saturday we walked the beach before 8 am. All i found was a broken conch. Love reading your blog. Time to go buy some butcher paper as i have a 2 yr old boy who would love to have a track to run his cars all over.

I use it for designing sewing patterns. I used to just tape pieces of printer paper together, but what a pain, plus I went through tape like I was singlehandedly keeping the Scotch company in business. Now, I just unroll my paper, sketch out the patterns and go.

I love your ideas! May I add one more? My kiddos bring home summer reading words to practice. Last summer, I wrote the words out on a huge piece of card stock, but butcher paper would have been perfect for this, too. When they were able to read the word correctly, they were able to stamp out the word with those fun bingo dot markers. I love when I can sneak reading into fun activities! šŸ™‚

You are so creative – love it! And thank you! Another blogger I read suggested contacting newspapers to buy the end roll of newsprint, but apparently they don’t sell those out where I live since no one knew what I was talking about.

My son is just figuring out what to do with crayons so I don’t think we’ll need this quite yet – but I plan to pick some up anyhow so we are prepared when inspiration his!

My husband just bought a huge roll to use for smoking (as in preparing meat); he also recently bought a smoker. (For example: http://www.thesmokerking.com/butcherpaperbrisket.html)

I’ve already used some of it for gift-wrapping–LOVE it! Love all these suggestions as well.

You could also trace the kids’ bodies on the paper and then have them color in outfits and decorate, etc.

That one would be a great one for birthday parties with a personalized mat for each guest. I made pirate maps for the treasure hunt out of butcher paper for our son’s 4th birthday party. Crumpled it up then burnt the edges for that real pirate look. Another idea we have used it for is our family Gratitude Poster. We add each day what we are thankful for. Amazing what little minds come up with. And a great way to start conversations with your kids.

    Butcher paper rocks!
Also newsprint ends…what’s left on the roll at the newspaper printer-usually A LOT for regular people uses and is FREE in my town to homeschoolers & teachers! And very cheap for everyone else.

I love using craft paper for wrapping gifts and for an easy rustic table cloth! Great ideas!

My name is Wilfred from England, I am 32 years old and I sincerely want to thank a great spell caster called Dr j lord who helped me to bring back my wife
after she had left me and my kids for good two years and six months. through out that year and six months I and my two kids called late and Kate were in great suffering until one day I came in contact with this powerful great spell caster who decided to wipe out tears away from eyes. According to my problem He decided to perform a spell service immediately and all other necessary things that has to be done an after the spell had been done He told me to wait for just 40 hours that the spell will start to take effect and so I believed and I waited for the time he had said. To my surprise, exactly the 40 hours that he had said I received a call and when I picked the call it was my wife pleading and also asking for forgiveness, at first I was amazed but later I came back to my mood and I decided to hang on the phone on her but when I terminated the call she keep on calling an I decided to switch off the phone. To my greatest surprise around 6:30am in the morning I heard my door bell ringing and I decided to open the door , to my surprise I saw my wife kneeling and begging me to forgive so I decided to forgive her and I ordered her up an I embrace her. This was how I got my wife back with the help of the great Dr .j lord viewers willing to contact him or anyone with the same problem or any kind of problem should simply contact him on this email (drjlordshrnetemple@yahoo.com) contact him at anytime and he is ready to help>>>>> HE IS A MAN
TO BE TRUSTED>>>> once again THANK YOU THE GREAT DR J LORD

Wow, I never knew where to get it. My mom use to buy rolls from the local butchers. But that was years ago! Love this post! I love the puppet show! Ha, cute! your fellow blogger, Cheriz (www.cheriz.org)

Works good to help keep weeds away, too. Cut the weeds as low as possible, put down the paper to cover the area – a couple layers is probably good. Cover with compost, and then mulch. Still have to plant any plants in the dirt under it, just poke a hole in the paper and plant in the dirt as usual.
The paper should keep away the weeds for a year to a year and a half.
And it decomposes over time – just add another round of it and start the cycle again.
