ETST Behind the Business: Nella Designs

February 12, 2013 By Kelle

Our namesake friend, Nella Designs, is returning in sponsorship, and we’re happy to highlight the beautiful work of designer Elizabeth Allen.  From invitations and announcements to custom prints and personalized jewelry, Nella Designs offers unique gifts and meaningful eye candy for your home.

Elizabeth is known for her custom silhouettes created from photographs, which can be turned into framed art as well as charms for necklaces and bracelets.

Her shop is also stocked with art prints for the home as well as both classic and whimsical jewelry gifts, including these new wish bracelets.  Make a wish and when your bracelet is worn, your wish is ready to come true (also available in “love” and “soar”).

As always, Nella Designs knows how to bring the happy.

A little more about Elizabeth, the artist behind the design:

1. I know you used to work in the design industry before starting your own company. What inspired your move to start your own business and how did that transition take place?

Nella Designs was born out of sheer determination to fulfill a lifelong dream of doing something that I loved, could share with others, and on my own terms. After ten years in the design industry, I launched Nella Designs in 2008 in hopes of becoming my own boss and creative entrepreneur. The road has been long and often uncertain at times, but I wouldn’t change this ride for anything.

2. Okay, so you know I love that we share a love for the name Nella. Where did the inspiration behind your business name come from?

Yes! I actually found your blog via Google Analytics after the search term “Nella” kept popping up. So funny and what a blessing!  I had the name Nella Designs picked out LONG before my business ever came to fruition. Nella is actually my last name backwards.  What’s good enough for Oprah (Harpo) is good enough for me.

3. Your silhouette pieces are unique and beautiful. How long do they take to create?

It can vary depending on how complex the supplied photo is (each one is made from the customers submitted photo of choice). The average silhouette takes a few hours to draw and refine.

4. You offer a nice selection of products from jewelry and stationery to prints and custom work. What’s your favorite thing to create and why?

I’ve really enjoyed creating jewelry as of late. It’s been a real learning curve, but I’ve enjoyed it immensely. Probably one of my most favorite things to create though would have to be art prints. I like to hole up in my studio, crank some tunes, and just draw and experiment with various layouts until I have something I’m proud enough to put in the shop! I just want to thank everyone who has purchased something from Nella Designs. It’s because of YOU, that I’m able to live out my dream!

Three: A Lil’ Valentine Party

February 11, 2013 By Kelle

Miss Nellie had a little love themed birthday party this weekend.  I don’t think you can ever go wrong with love themed.  We tamed our party group to a small bunch and noticed how much better she did.  A bit shy and easily overwhelmed, we were so happy to see her all smiles and owning her turf, even if she did end up wanting to ditch her friends for the babies.  Always.

Pictures make things look pretty and more time-consuming than they are.  Really, this was a very simple party to put together.  Got paper doilies?  You’re all set.  We taped and strung paper doilies everywhere, adding them to bagged lunches, take-home treat sacks and yarn lines tied between trees.

One easy craft: Valentine Flower Pots

We used $0.79 terra cotta pots–spray-painted white–which the girls painted (lay out some paintbrushes, a plate full of paint colors, a glass of water to clean brushes and baby wipes to clean hands) and added some lace embellishments (they brushed on Tacky Glue to adhere them).  Pop in some pretty impatiens, and voila.

The kids took care of everything else.

Parties usually end in our driveway, and I love it.  A mess of trikes and bikes, sandals slapping fast against cement, little girls giggling as they chase each others’ bike trails, toddlers pulling wagons three times their size, mamas set up in beach chairs and the unspoken understanding that the party might be over but please, stay as long as you’d like.

Seems to be the year of the boy in our group. Ours will soon join these two new little loves, Thomas and Johnny Mac.

Nella sat in the driveway and fed her baby strawberries for quite a while.

Oh, and for the record…

…I still got it.

Our weekend has nicely contrasted that of so many others’ in the country. I’ve loved seeing picturesque snow scenes on IG and hearing of cold cozy nights back home up north. I miss it but can’t deny the fact that our weather has been completely enjoyable lately–warm but breezy, plenty of blue skies and nights with open windows and happy cricket sounds.

And now we wait for baby.

I’m not feeling very well tonight and had visions of a fun writing session earlier today, but now I want to curl up and watch a movie.

Nellie has a little Valentine’s birthday party tomorrow, so I had best finish this before the cupcake timer dings.

Wishing you all a weekend full of little happies.

Our happies:

Nella just ran off with my phone, and I heard her push a bunch of numbers and someone said hello.  She’s babbling from the hallway, so this is my cue before international cell phone charges show up on our bill.

Find some ways to make people happy this weekend.  You will, in turn, feel happy.
