Self Portrait Challenge: [Nude, Week 1]

June 5, 2008 By Kelle

So, my first reaction to Self Portrait Challenge’s new theme was, in fact, a big “Hampton, OUT”…but then again, art is art and a challenge is a challenge (no, I would not jump off a bridge if Self Portrait Challenge told me to…well, maybe if there was good lighting). And I hate the stigma that nude is bad or suggestive…because it’s not.
Out of my comfort zone? Slightly.
But here goes.

If I thought about how many things I’d like to change about my body, I’d probably be able to come up with a hundred. But, I don’t think about those things. In fact, since I’ve had a baby, I respect my body so much more and love it for what it did. It is strong and powerful and made a miracle come to life. I focus on what I like, and I do know one thing that I like very much…my collar bones. So there.

Code Nakey

June 4, 2008 By Kelle

Call the Baby Police. We’ve got a Code Nakey on our hands, Folks.

Cubby’s newest obsession: gettin’ nakey. All the time. Pulls at her clothes. Cries. Whines. Tears.

It starts with the socks. I find them under the coffee table, at the bottom of the crib, in between the xylophone bars in the toy box.

Then the shirt comes off. She can actually do this herself, or shall I say she can get her head out which leaves her arms trapped like little sticks in a straight-jacket which leads to hysterics and me running to the rescue.

The pants, she’s workin’ on, but isn’t quite there. Mama helps with that one. And once stripped to freedom, we have one very happy baby.

And her diapered butt crawls off into the sunset.

P.S. ‘dja ever think how funny it would be if we behaved like babies? Like if we were in the grocery store just pushin’ our cart and all the sudden had the itch to be naked…and we whined and cried, ripped off our clothes and then just crawled down Aisle 7 towards the produce? How come babies can get away with it?

Glady’s Apron

June 3, 2008 By Kelle

to my jo-jo…
i wear her apron today. the fact that you gave it to me makes me feel so loved. i think of her when i wear it…and of you…and of what it must feel like to live without a mother whom you loved so much. i wish i knew you better ten years ago on this day. i would have held your hand. i would have cried with you. and i wish i could have known her…the woman who gave me my friend. i think i’ll make a cake tonight. yes, i will make a cake. and i will wear glady’s apron when i make it. i love you.

“One of the most emotionally stirring books I’ve ever read….a reminder that a mother’s love for her child is a powerful, eternal, unshakable force.”
