North Pole Party, Year 4

December 22, 2014 By Kelle

No matter how happy and content with life I may be years from now, I know I will look back at these pictures someday and ache to climb into them again–to feel all the twinkle and magic and warmth that’s also present and available to us when we’re 50 and 60 and 85 but that’s palpable in such immeasurable intensity when our kids are little. When their innocence and sense of wonder is so great, it trumps any skepticism, stress or sadness. When Santa hats are still a little big on their heads, three frosted cookies at a party aren’t met with thoughts of calories, and pajama drawers are full of footie sleepers with reindeer and snowmen prints.

Our fourth annual North Pole Party–this year celebrated with 23 kids and their mamas–was again a favorite night of the year where clearly the spotlight of the evening was these precious kids and the purest form of curiosity, enthusiasm, friendship and wonder, completely unbridled.

I cry when I look at these pictures and then it makes me sappy and then I write really gooey motherish things–a complete If You Give a Mouse a Cookie situation but the get-your-shit-together kind. So I’ll give you pictures and let them speak for themselves.

And inside for a reading of The Night Before Christmas and a present exchange. It’s my favorite part. It’s the part where, in one scene, you can see all of them and the magic is so present, there’s almost a haze.

Santa (*cough*mybrother*cough*) called again this year (I thought to cover his name on my phone this time), and my face literally hurt from smiling–partly because his enthusiasm and ho-hos were so on point and partly because the kids’ faces were like paintings depicting childhood.

 photo northpoleparty52_zpsa50f22a6.jpg

The kids started raising their hands, wanting to say their own little something to Santa–“Santa, do you know my elf, Jeff?” (Oh! Ho ho ho, Jeff! Ho ho, yes! He’s a funny one, isn’t he? Ho ho!)–and they took turns coming up to the phone. It was magic.

 photo northpoleparty53_zpsa5112a20.jpg

Thank you to Uncle Bubby who slipped out of a Christmas party to make that important call and managed to fool even my dad. “Who was that awesome Santa?” he asked at the end of the party. “That was your son.” My brother later texted, “I have to admit, I almost blew my cover laughing when one of the kids said his elf’s name was Jeff.”

We’ve swept up most of the glitter, and another year of memories has been tucked in its place.
Three mores sleeps, sweet babies. Three more sleeps.

Cheers to magic and friendship and wide-eyed wonder. Cheers to finding it and creating it.

To see more North Pole Parties, here’s 2011, 2012 and 2013.

(and thank you to Heidi who took most of these pictures. We have a little friend photo pact–I take pics at her parties, she takes pics at mine).

A Big Boy Party

February 17, 2014 By Kelle

We celebrated the big boy’s first birthday this past weekend with a Big Boy themed party, paying homage to a Michigan legend, Big Boy restaurant.

A simple burger/fry/mini malt menu fed our crew, and a trail of favorite photos fed our memories.

I’ve always loved planning parties–especially ones for my kids, but I’m loving more the challenge of combining meaningful details with simplicity to create an intimate celebration.

I found Dash’s adorable checkered pants on Etsy to complete his Big Boy look (minus the hamburger tray).  He thought a little bruiser on his forehead would go nicely with his outfit, so he arranged a date with the tile floor the day before his party.

I found these cute party favors at the dollar store last week–joke condiment bottles.

Everyone fell for it and dodged the fake mustard string.

Brett’s dad took the cake smashing photos–an event that started with timid little frosting swipes and ended with full blown cake slapping, a bath and a pre-bed sugar buzz.  I haven’t seen them all yet but he did send me this one this weekend, and I love it.

So thankful for this year, this boy and this weekend of celebrating him.

Little Italy Party

January 20, 2014 By Kelle

Nella’s birthday is Wednesday, but we had a little Italy party over the weekend, the theme prompted by her love of spaghetti.

With beloved little friends and piles of meatballs, we celebrated four amazing years and all the good to come.

A few party details if you’re interested in throwing your own version of an Italian party:

Favors: Make Your Own Pizza Kits filled with small jars of sauce (jars from Michael’s) and sandwich bags of mozzarella, dough and pepperoni  (paper bags and striped paper liner also from Michael’s, label created and printed at home)

 photo blog1_zps10bc8ea1.jpg

Decorate a Pizza Cookie: We baked big round sugar cookies for each child to decorate.  Small pizza boxes are from Oriental Trading.  Pizza toppings: red frosting, white chocolate shavings, mini M&M’s and gummy candy

Pin the Meatballs on the Spaghetti:  Draw a big bowl of noodles on foam core board and a separate pile of meatballs on red card stock.

Other Items: Italian Menu Board, Italy flag napkins, Italian flag toothpicks, mini Italian stick flags

Sharing more on celebrating 4 years later this week.  Thank you to all who have recognized the efforts of the NDSS by contributing to Pay It 4Ward and for your continued commitment to recognizing both the abilities and needs of those with Down syndrome.

I was reminded after Nella’s party of something I wrote shortly after Nella was born–a raw beginner’s reaction to the Welcome to Holland poem regarding special needs: “there is no law that says I can’t get out of Holland and if the planes out are halted and I want to go to Italy, I’ll take these damn wooden shoes, smash them into splinters and use the wood to build a dingy on which I will paddle through the English Channel, so help me God, with Nella and Lainey strapped to my back until I land in Italy. And I will eat gelato and take pictures of the Roman Cathedrals and, by Golly, I will write the map of Italian tourism if I so choose.”

We love Holland.  We twirl in tulip fields and dance in wooden shoes.  But we ate gelato this weekend and created our own little Italy too. I’m just sayin’.
