A Travel Ramble

October 20, 2012 By Kelle

The first rule of travel, especially when kids are involved, is that you cannot come home from a continental jaunt without stories.  I’m not just talking adventurous oh-the-things-we-saw kind of stories.  Those are, of course, inevitable.  I’m talking funny stories–the ones you’re not thrilled about as they’re happening but rather come to appreciate them later for their humor, their memories and their ability to keep it real–as if we need more of that around here.  Let’s begin by stating some facts.  We’re not exactly savvy travelers, even though before trips I envision our family sauntering through airports in chic travel attire and wheeling beautiful luggage behind us.  “Oh, what’s that, TSA agent?  You need my identification?  Why, of course, let me just pull out my passport from this vintage Italian leather passport clutch.”

No, we are the modern day Griswolds.  We tote broken, beat-up suitcases, we drag blankets, we take our shoes off for security only to be mortified by the state of our socks underneath.  We walk through terminals, oblivious to the fact that people are chasing us down, alerting us that we dropped a bottle, a boarding pass, a baby shoe and half a bag of Doritos three gates back.  Phone chargers dangle from our carry-on pockets and zippers never fail to break as we’re frantically trying to shove clothes into our suitcases, shifting the balance to avoid overweight luggage charges.  This will change as “Become cool savvy traveler and purchase fabulous luggage” just moved up several notches on the bucket list. However, I can say our kids are very good on flights, and we are proud to flaunt that fact given it’s about the only thing we have going for us when we travel.  They are ridiculously good–quiet, calm and happy for hours on end.  I’m so proud of them.

So stories…

Well, the best I have is that the airport escalator almost pulled my pants off when we arrived in San Diego.  And I realize that “almost” completely robs this story’s “story-ness” because–my, what a tale I’d have to tell if it really happened.  But, for a moment I was sure it was going to as my hands were too full to hoist my very draggy pant legs up only three stairs away from the pants-eating edge of the down escalator.  I balanced my kid and my bags while I strategized my jump, all the while telling myself,  “You are about to lose your pants…in an airport full of people.”   But it didn’t happen, so moving on.

I will share images and thoughts from Everybody Plays on Monday.  San Diego’s Fox 5 News did a great story on the event which you can view here.  It was wonderful to meet so many families with children of all abilities and unique things that make them beautiful.  I am inspired and motivated by the events of this week, and I can’t wait to share more.

Yesterday, after a few days of fulfilling work, Brett and the girls and I explored the city a bit, checking off only a couple stops on our must-see list but completely enjoying a relaxing end to our visit.  We walked the Ocean Beach Pier in the morning, stopping to watch the surfers and take in the view that is so different from our own beach–bigger waves, denser sand and a backdrop of breathtaking hills.

We continued on to La Jolla where Brett’s built-in Mexican Restaurant GPS directed him to Jose’s on Prospect where we sat under open windows, ate fat burritos and talked about future trips we’ll take someday.

Brett taught Nella this catchy dance where you put your fingers in the air and say “Ooo, ooo, ooo.” It’s her go-to trick for making us laugh.

Photobucket

We walked up and down streets, stopping for cappuccino and gelato, admiring art, sampling lotions in soap shops, taking pictures, and watching our girls be silly and inquisitive and entertained by new sights.  This is my favorite way of traveling–making agendas in the morning but allowing lots of cushion for change of plans, staying in one place and leisurely drinking up the hidden gems of a city.

La Jolla was perfect for hidden gems.  Like an impromptu rendevous with new friends (I met Jora through Instagram, and her family is just lovely)…

…and some seal watching at a rocky cove.

And then it happened–the unicorn moment. I walked the girls down to the beach to get a little closer to the cliff where the seals were lounging.  We were listening to them bark and watching from a distance while they rolled around the edge of the cliff when a boy yelled, “MOM!  A seal!  A seal!” as he bolted from the water.  A seal flopped right up on the beach and slowly waddled toward us and stopped (okay, I’m getting comments that it’s a sea lion). Yes, holy shellacked gourd, sweet mother of cornucopia, freaking corn husk garland!

Our day was highlighted last night with a return to The Station Tavern where friends from the week’s events gathered at picnic tables under strands of twinkly lights and enjoyed burgers and beer and good conversation–a perfect end to our stay.

We are home, feeling fulfilled and grateful to visit new places and meet new people. Have a wonderful weekend. I have a couple broken suitcases to attend to.

I Heart Faces and Texas and Women.

October 8, 2012 By Kelle

I’ve heard the phrase “Everything’s bigger in Texas” numerous times this weekend, and the I Heart Faces Conference delivered accordingly–big ideas, big hearts, big inspiration.

Okay, big nasty horse teeth too.

Photobucket

He tried to bite my arm, and I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he was only admiring my orange sweater.  Yes, sweater as in I got to legitimately wear a perfect fall-hued sweater as temperatures dipped into the low fifties on Saturday and Sunday.  It was lovely.  I made sure to drop lots of “Hang on, let me grab my sweater” or “Good thing I have this sweater” or just the simple obnoxious “sweater, sweater, sweater, sweater” because I could.  I miss sweater weather.

It was inspiring to hear so many women talk about photography and to see how they’ve built their businesses, created their brands and fearlessly chased their dreams.

If you are a photographer and haven’t heard of Sue Bryce, I suggest you check her out.  Perhaps begin by watching this or this.  Sue delivered the closing keynote speech with her stunning images of women she’s photographed, reminding us how powerful it is for women not only to recognize they are beautiful but to never stop believing or following their dreams.

Photobucket

She also taught us how to pose properly for pictures, and for the rest of the weekend everyone went totally into Vogue mode.

Photobucket

The weekend bonus came, of course, with JR’s face plastered all over the South Fork compound.

Photobucket

And the horses and the chill and the picturesque ranch, its acres just begging to be photographed.

Photobucket

They came, the artists, toting their cameras.

I spoke Saturday morning–nervous at first, but quickly overcome by the energy in the room and the inspiration we draw from each other and from our journeys.

And my favorite part of the weekend?

The women, the stories. Sitting back and listening, watching women communicate, surveying a room full of people who make efforts to accomplish their dreams every day. Different women, different dreams, different paths but hungry to create beautiful things.

This sort of inspiration always makes me redefine my own goals and tap a little deeper into my potential as a woman, wife, mother, friend, creator and story-teller.  And for those of you who I met this weekend, how wonderful it was to hear the ways in which you are doing the same.

Gratuitous butt shot; You’re welcome.

Thank you to everyone at I Heart Faces for the incredible Texas hospitality and for the wonderful opportunity to be a part of this weekend’s events.

I missed my family.  So happy to be back.

Welcoming doTerra Essential Oils independent consultant, Jess Litster, as a sponsor this month. We started using essential oils a few weeks ago, and Nella already knows the drill.  When I pull the oils off the shelf in the morning, she smiles and runs to the living room where she lies down and throws her feet in the air (we put our On Guard oil on the bottom of her feet).  There’s a wealth of information available through Jessica and doTerra about the benefits of essential oils–from immunity protection to stress mangagment–and particularly the quality of doTerra’s oils.  Jessica will help you find what oil is best for your family’s needs.

You can contact Jessica and order through her site, or you can e-mail her at jessicalitster22@yahoo.com for more one-on-one guidance and education about specific oils and their benefits.

The Last Day

June 24, 2012 By Kelle

After three weeks away and over 4,000 miles worn on our tire treads, we are now only three hours away from home. That’s three weeks times 4,000 miles plus three hours equals—well, crackers. Crackers everywhere in our car. Smashed into the carpet, buried under car seat fabric, wedged into the plastic grooves of floor mats. We’ve exhausted all road trip games, we’re all ready to be home, and all cries are now answered simply with “Here, have some crackers.”

We’re already talking about how we’re going do the whole walking into the house thing. We’ve been driving six hours, we’re bored, we needed something to talk about.

“I say we don’t carry anything in. We get the girls and go inside and celebrate,” Brett suggests.

“Ooooh—good idea,” I applaud him.

“And let’s video tape it. I think the girls are going to be so excited to be home. It’s going to be awesome.”

I love that he says this.

I’ve never been very good at ending happy events like holidays and vacations, but it’s easy when you slide from happy vacation to happy home. From Chicago adventures and book signings to hammock naps, dune climbs and lake wading, I’ve been deprogrammed, ready to reestablish our home routines step by step—most familiar and well-established but some new, inspired by travel.

Photobucket

Playing in the city creek at sunset in Chattanooga last night.

The thing I love most about visiting other people and places is witnessing the wonder of differentiated cultures and learning new things—routines and methods that are interesting, most of which are different from ours and shed light on how wonderful it is to be unique and how fascinating different ways of living truly are. I like to see the way people organize their homes, how they relax, how they make time for family, how they experience adventure. I like to see how towns exist and function—what shops are thriving, how they are designed and decorated. Some of the things we learn and see, we take home and implement in our own home. And they can be as simple as falling in love with my friend Rebecca’s wood salt box that her grandpa made her and deciding a homemade wood salt box is a very charming thing to have in a kitchen indeed.

Photobucket

There’s something cozy about giving my girls a bath in someone else’s home. I always love it when my friends’ kids all climb in our tub. It’s very “Mi Casa es su Casa.”

The last days of our trip were spent in Carmel, Indiana and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In Carmel, we reunited with my friend Rebecca and her husband John, who graciously opened their beautiful home to us.

Nella liked the carpet so much, she fell asleep on the stairs. She slept there for two hours.

And last night, we stopped in Chattanooga for sunset and dinner before driving on to Macon, Georgia to sleep off the driving hours.

Chiseled right into the cement of downtown sidewalks, in front of the Tennessee Aquarium, is a pebbly shallow stream where kids gather in the heat of summer. It curves and staggers into mini waterfalls and calls for little ones to drench their clothes—even if they have no back-up outfits.

Even if there’re no more diapers.

The Tennessee River sidles right up next to downtown Chattanooga, and the Smoky Mountains rest stately in the background—the grand combination providing an epic place to watch the sun set.

Photobucket

Photobucket

We did just that, and it was one of those moments—one of many on this vacation—where I stood in awe, in gratitude, in perfect contentment. “I’m so happy to be right here, right now,” I thought.

Ice cream topped off the evening.

As well as the sounds of bands that loudly echoed into the streets from bars that were crowded with summer enthusiasts.

Friday Phone Dump photos are taken on the Instagram iPhone app (free) and dropped into a 12×12 collage using a photo editing software (Photoshop Elements works). I am @etst (enjoying the small things) on Instagram if you care to follow the feed.

And your #enjoyingthesmallthings photos. (If you use Instagram and have a photo that makes you happy, share it by using the hashtag #enjoyingthesmallthings. Yours may be chosen to be shared in a Friday post.)

And now, I’m publishing this from home, settled in for only an hour but so ready to continue sinking back into our space this weekend.

This is my last vacation post–so bittersweet. What a trip this has been. My girls were so wonderful. Cooperative on the long drive. Fascinated with new places just like I dreamed they’d be. There were a lot of “wow“s.

Find ways to be fascinated. “Wow” is always such a wonderful word to say. And these past three weeks have been just that.

Photobucket

Wow.

The last day of our vacation, the first day of our summer at home.
