Pop Quiz, hotshot: which of these photos is the real dancer leaping on the beach last night and which one is me, pretending to be a dancer?
If you guessed the graceful swan in the first picture is the real one, you’re right. The second one looks like it needs a chalk outline and some crime scene tape. Like I fell out of a 15-story building and landed on the canvas of a sunset.
All this to say, Heidi and I headed to the beach last night and among watching our kids eat sand and scream at seagulls, we were sidetracked by the beautiful sunlit silhouette of the real dancer who was all whippin’ out the grand jete. And I apologize if that’s not a grand jete, but it’s the only ballet term I know, and I do my best to drop it when I can.
Lainey, unlike her mama, possesses some instinctive grace and poise.
We started ballet for her on a whim, thinking we’d do an 8-week course and peter out like we do a lot of other stuff, but she loves it. Seven months in and the kid passe’s more than she walks. Okay, I lied. I know two ballet terms.

Heidi’s response to the above move…and I quote: Who do you think you are, the (expletive expletive) Black Swan?
At least she properly represents her hometown with her choice of beach cup.
So, where were we?
We enjoyed a night out for pizza earlier this week before Poppa and Gary had to head back to Michigan. I like nights out for pizza. I like that it feels vacationey in that most pizza nights are spent at home, and going out for it is out of the ordinary and therefore more appreciated. I like the vibe of a pizzeria–the framed signed pictures of celebreties swearing it’s the world’s best pizza, the grease-stained tablets the waiters use to pencil in your order, the pitchers of fountain Coke that tastes better than usual…fizzier and colder. I like to read the story on the back of the menu that tells how the pizzeria started…how some young guy had a good idea and a great recipe and poured his life savings into starting a chain some years ago. And I like the little black-and-white picture right next to the story…the one where that young guy is smiling, balancing a great big spatula with the famous pizza pie.

Dude, what is up with our family and this new face?
We had just finished dinner when Lainey caught sight of a young girl taking a ride on the Eurobungy, this giant trampoline/bungee jumping device stationed outside the shopping center where we had dinner. And then my girl shocked me. She pointed and confidently said, “I want to ride that.” I wanted to tell her that I knew better, that she’d be catapulted into the trees, that I knew she’d just start crying to get off the minute we got in line. But I didn’t. I wanted to let her fly…to figure it out for herself even though I knew–like, could bet money–that she wouldn’t follow through. Because she’s timid and little and only three.
“Are you sure you want to ride it? Do you see how high that little girl is jumping?” I asked, careful not to sway my voice to suggest pressure either way.
“I want to ride it,” she said again. So we got in line and I waited for the moment I’d break out my prepared consolation of “That’s okay, Baby. You tried. Maybe next time.”
But she never cried. She never even hesitated. She listened to the instructions, she followed directions, she shy-smiled as her feet lost touch with the trampoline and the motor got louder as she was hoisted higher and higher. I started nervous laughing. We all did.
This is nuts. I know my kid. She’s not this girl. And then the Eurobungee man grabbed my girl’s foot, pulled it down like a sling shot, offered one last “Ready?” (followed by a nod and a smile), and then, BAM. My girl rocketed into the sky with shrieks of laughter that made heads turn in a two-mile radius. My timid little three-year old catapulted toward the fronds of towering Royal Palms that lined the sky, and our mouths gaped not only at the absurdity of a toddler’s silhouette hugging the moon but at her grin and gratification of the human rubber band ride. She surprised me again. My girl is brave and adventurous. She is almost four.
Twenty minutes later, we high-fived and applauded. Bravo, Brave Girl.
She’s on a little metamorphosis, compiling some sweet new adjectives to her ever-growing character.

She tried hard to pretend she didn’t think this was funny when she walked out of her room like this the other day.
But under all this brave and adventurous stuff, she’s still just little. She still asks me every couple weeks, “Hey Mama, when I was borned, did you cry happy tears?”

**************************************************************************
Anyway, we’re halfway into the week and can’t ignore the fact that it’s the peak of south Florida weather right now…the best of the best. The very reason the term “snowbird” exists. It’s beautiful and breezy and warm. I am completely swayed by seasonal changes, craving all the things you’re supposed to crave when the calendar turns–pinks in spring and apple spice in fall. I am dreaming of florals and pastels and drapes that dance when the wind from open windows suddenly sweeps in. And currently in love with spring around our home…
And it just gets better from here.

Sherri, please send your info to kellehamptonblog@comcast.net. Congratulations!

Glad to see you were in Michigan! I have those cups too 🙂 Gotta represent my school!
Beautiful sunset photos!
Thankyou for cheering me up! I needed it today 🙂 x
How lovely. I’ve so enjoyed reading your blog this last year and a half. I can’t believe our babies are already one!
No “Oh”? And I love brave, brave girl!
Those hair clips. What a funny kid!
BeeTeeDub… I had a dream a few nights ago that I flew to your home without notice and showed up at your doorstep with suitcases in hand. You invited me in and I stayed for a week. So random! I guess that’s what happens when I read your blog in bed at night. 🙂
I was sure that first picture was you!
That first photo is AMAZING. Makes me wish I was a ballerina!
Is Nella playing with the Cuppy bunny from the Parent Trap movie? I have him too!
Lainey’s question to you about when she was “borned” made me cry (happy tears).
You go, Lainey girl!! That’s awesome!!! She looks beautiful in every single pic but the one with the hairclips~such a stunning lil 3 almost 4 yearold!! Love, love the silhouette pics, gor.geous:)xo
Your blog is the greatest. It really makes me put everything into perspective no matter how stressed I may feel.
Thanks for making me appreciate the small things and see what really matters.
🙂
I love your blog. It’s always the first I read when I see a new post in my Google Reader. And I have to tell you, Miss Nella and that “oh!” face…so cute! I was actually looking back at the post you did about her birth story, and she was making that cute face even at the very beginning (at the end of the post when she’s in the hat, I think)! Anyway, thanks for the great blog!
Happiness, indeed! The lolling puppy tongue is just the epitome of spunk!
thanks for jumping the same way i do while trying to look graceful…..
you have the most beautiful hair and gorgeous smile…so if you had pulled off a really graceful jump, i probably would have had to hate you…..
and the headshot with the all the bows and clips on lainey….sheesh, there must be a contest out there to enter that one in.
do you ever visit the panhandle ? our hearts are in seaside, florida while our butts live in wisconsin.
What is it about little girls and putting all the clips they can in their hair?
I have a picture like that of my daughter when she was nearly 4 years old and now big sigh she is almost 24! huge sigh, I’m getting old but thank the Good Lord that I’m still here to enjoy it.
Loving the photos, I’m so waiting for summer! Bring it on!
I can’t wipe the grin off my face from laughing at your silhouette to how amazing Laney is for just jumping with two feet into something she wanted to do & i loved how you embraced it.
i love love this blog post!! amazing!!
can i say lainey is a lot like you!!! brave and adventurous!!!!
Lainey’s bravery reminds me of my little (almost 3 year old) boy who is known to be slow to warm up and yet who is now the one jumping off benches and climbing up things that are way to high for him (me). You never know what to expect from these little ones!
Just loving your blog lately, such a good reminder of what’s important in life and to enjoy the little things, as that will be what you remember when you look back. You help me to make each moment count. To think about what makes me happy in life and to savour it.
I just love the pics of your little girls. Nella is just gorgeous – truly a living doll – and I just want to give her a great big hug! Good on Lainey for trying the bungy trampoline!
Thanks for sharing with us,
From a reader on the Gold Coast, Australia.
I didn’t even want to spoil the Lainey-bungee story by scrolling too fast so slowly I scrolled, careful not to ruin it! And it was worth every second!
I’m so proud of her! I’m so surprised she did it! She is a brave girl ready to take on this world.
Happy Spring!
<3
My first beef with you, Kelle. UofM? Really? You seem fun enough to be a Spartan. Just sayin’.
I loved the “she’s almost four” line. My little guy turned two last week and I can’t believe it. SLOW DOWN. Thanks for the great post–I always your blog after I put my little guy to bed and it always makes me smile.
im now wiping spit off my computer screen from bursting into laughter when I scrolled down to the pic of Lainey with all her hair pretties on at once. I love it. 🙂
just missing a Nella oh-face! Although, Poppy’s is a close second 😉
How pathetic am I that I live 2 miles from the beach, and we n-e-v-e-r go! Granted, the CA coast is not as warm this time of year, but still! Your beach nights have inspired me to trek down there more when it does warm up. And though I have yet to announce it to everyone I know (other than our parents and siblings)…I could definitely use the Every Drink to remind me to drink enough water for my little growing raspberry (according to Baby Center, that’s how big it is at 8 weeks)…expected October 30th! Our first little bundle, and I expect to cry plent-y of happy tears when (s)he is “borned”. 😀
love the spring too ~~~ and so wanting to move to naples fl .
your little bug is almost 4 ! my oldest is almost 6 ! time flies.
hope you got my email of my noah loving on nella via computer !
love and blessings
the doughtys
I love it! Look at Lainey go! She is so adventurous like her Mama. What a brave girl.
I am so jealous of your Spring weather! I am soo looking forward to enjoying the Spring Things. One last snowfall planned for tomorrow, and hopefully we’ll be done for the year. Im sick of this white stuff and ready for some sun.
Happy St. Patricks Day (tomorrow!) Enjoy the beautiful weather you are having. Suck it in for the rest of us 🙂
Go Lainey!! My 3 year old (4 in October) little girl surprises me everyday bike riding and spelling color words they are so smart and adventurous..Im excited about the “fabulous fours”
I love the way your blog can make me go from “Laughing Out Loud” to “Tears In My Eyes”. Love your ballet moves and Lainey’s bravery.
I have a new found Lainey-Love today! Miss K is darling. I admire her ability to be strong, yet still allow the Little part to show.
Go Lainey!! I love it when my kids surprise me like that… proving that high expectations & an open mind are essential tools for parenting. The hair clip pic made me snort laugh… too cute!
xo
Kate
I don’t really comment (I usually just read) but hooo man that first little segment thru the crime scene tape part had me LOLing over here
I love silhouette photos…and can’t wait for our beach weather to begin!!!
I was ear to ear smiles looking at the picture of Lainey way up there. Wow, what a big girl. You must have been so proud.
Your spring photos are beautiful and very “springy” (as in pastel colours plus a little girl bouncing on a eurobungee, haha).
As always, your photography inspires me. I’m just beginning to learn about taking pictures, trying to capture precious memories of my three little girls growing up way too fast! I always try for the light, pastelly shades you so beautifully capture, but taking more photos has made me realize how everything here seems to consist of fuller colours – it’s the latitude, I guess. So I get my pastel fix by looking at your beautiful blog, and reading about it gives me a taste of the Florida sun! Thanks for that!
Lainey is so much braver than me! Ahh no thanks bungee jumping especially after pizza! Again an amazing array of the most beautiful pictures that draw the viewer in, almost to the point of shutting your eyes and being able to smell the sea and hear the waves. Magic
love this spring things you love and that picture of Lainey on the slingshot gave me butterflies in my tummy. I could totally feel your excitement in that photo. Great job Lainey! You ARE so brave!
Lainey is precious 🙂
Those are the best silhouettes EVER!!!! And the sunflare in the picture of you and Nella, teach me? I LOVE this post.I was reading it with a big smile on my face as my husband is staring at me…. wondering what I was smiling at 🙂
As always…
breath of fresh air.
The beach pics are beautiful!!! Makes want to hang out with you and Heidi!
Loved Lainey’s story. She is brave and beautiful! Almost four….. 🙂
Go Lainey! How fun is she-all bungie jumpy-“big” kid style! I got a little weepy when you wrote of her asking if you cried happy tears when she was born-my newest arrival should be here any day now and let me tell you the happy tears will be a flowin’ just as they did for the little girl now in her bedtime jammies snuggling with her daddy- she the girl who made me a mommy!
Dude, whats with your dad’s chili bowl hair cut?? hahaha
Go Lainey!!
I’ve seen kids do that same thing, ride on that…contraption, and I always think to myself ‘Aww’. Then ‘They’re too little to do that!’
And also, ‘I want to do that too!’
Gosh, Nella’s getting so big! I guess I just noticed it more seeing her sit up in her chair at the pizzeria! She’s so cute! I love that age.
And your dance silhouette made me laugh so hard! Funny.
Love your post today! Totally need some of that ‘Florida’ weather right now!
MGOBLUE!
(totally got distracted by the maize & blue pride! gotta go finish the rest now…)
I kind of did today’s challenge in finding out something new about my sister…she’s having a baby!!! They’ve been trying for two years now and we are so excited there was a heartbeat and that little one is growing 🙂
My oldest boy surprised us like your Lainey did you. On our annual visit to the state fair, the year he had just barely turned 6, he asked if he could try the huge rock climbing wall Jeep had set up in a back, forgotten corner of the fairgrounds. He had never done anything remotely like that before but he climbed the entire wall like a pro. I cheered and clapped and, of course, cried as he hit the button at the top right under the red, white & blue flapping in the wind. It was an awesome moment. One I’ll never, ever forget. Ever.
Love the silhouette shots! That style is one of my faves!
Love the silhouette shots! Especially the one of the dancer. Now, I have to go find my old Speed videotape.
I wanted to let you know that I did a double take on the silhouettes. I totally thought you were the first one and I was AMAZED!! (Yours isn’t too shabby either:0)). And, I agree with you on eating pizza out. Even at a Pizza Hut, it still feels foreign and like a vacation.
LOVED this post! Seriously, I can not believe Lainey did that jumpy thing! Not that I know Lainey, it just seems like such a ‘big’ thing to do! Wow! And all those hair bows and hair clips..SO funny!!
Pretty sure I was smiling and giggling when I saw Lainey’s face and hair-do!! Cute cute cute!!
So many chuckle-worthy things in this post! Great to have a laugh on a sick day 🙂
I love that your little was so brave and tried that bungee thing. And that you got an amazing picture because she’s going to remember that moment forever!
I LOVE the silhouette picture of Lainey on the beach. She looks beautiful and graceful and way to grown up.
I wanted to tell you things have been a bit rough for me lately and I needed to focus on something not my life, so started at the beginning of your blog and read all the way through to Nella’s birth story (where I started reading). It was amazing to see you grow as a blogger/writer. Question though. Did you start posting your work pictures elsewhere or are you not working right now?
Either way, its been a very therapeutic experience. I needed to be inspired to not only get back to the job of being mommy but to kick a$s and enjoy every second of it. My littlest is a week younger than Nella and its going sooo fast. I gotta suck up all the baby before the baby is gone!
I love, love, love that pic of Lainey with all the barrettes. And the fact that she is so serious. I want to just hang it on my fridge, it is so cute.
Bahahahaha the picture of Lainey w/ all those barretts and the super “what’s the big deal” face is hilarious! The sunsets photos are lovely. : )
I didn’t realize I was a local business owner.
did dad get a new hairdresser? I don’t recall the bowl/skater cut.
I should have been a dancer.
Then I would dance for Mark Ruffalo. and he’d ask me to marry him. and we’d star in indie films until the end of time. forever and ever. amen.
selah.
Lainey is SO much braver than me.
Just about cried when I saw that last picture of Nella Cordelia. My daughter, Ashley Joy (3) had that same little Old Navy bubble romper that she wore at 8 months old. One of my favs. Guessing it was a hand-me-down from Lainey?? I would love to reuse the one I have, but I think I might be put in jail for child abuse if I tried to put it on my little 1-year-old Rusty.
Love this! Lainey’s spunky little spirit almost made me cry. She’s getting so big & she’s so beautiful. Living vicariously through you in regards to spring weather & beach visits. We’re getting a wee bone thrown at us tomorrow & Friday, when the temps are supposed to climb into the 60’s
maybe 70’s. I’ll still be wearing a sweater ’cause I like my temps in the 80’s & 90’s but it’s still a hint of what’s right around the corner. Enjoy!
I. LOVE. THE. CUP. GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ps I live in Ohio (don’t shoot!!!!!)
and i love love spell.
Loved this post.
Not gonna lie…that picture of Lainey flying made my palms a little sweaty. I know they are totally safe (I think??) but I am deathly afraid of heights and rides and everything fun so it made me a little nervous.
I love how Nella sits with her knees all bent up-so cute. Oh babes in turquiose…..be still my heart.
Lainey is so brave! Wowza! I woulda been freakin out just watching it. Good for you for letting go. Love the picture of Nella looking behind her at the pizza place. Probably looking for her pizza! So cute. xo
go Lainy go…milestones that bring happy tears to our eyes and the reality of our lil ones growing up and exploring the world around them.
Well I had guessed the first one. I figured it was a trick question… But your just was still way high then I could ever go, so you rock… And way to go lainey, she is starting to break out of her shell…
Go Lainey go! You awesome adventurous girl!
Oh, the hairbow picture!!! Love!
I am VERY happy to know that you like VS Lovespell. I’ve been wearing it for years. And just the other day I thought, “maybe I should get a new scent. Maybe this is too much of a relic.” So, thanks for the reassurance. 🙂 Love the B&W pic of Nella in the restaurant…so adorable.
What a brave big girl. YAY!!!
Lainey’s picture with all those hairclips on her hair made me laugh so hard it made me choke on my breakfast! I love reading your blog right before heading to university — it leaves me a happy vibe to last me the rest of the day! 🙂
-www.elevenredpaperclips.com
I miss your part of the country already – and i’ve only been back in Connecticut for -oh, fourteen minutes!! (*and yes I’m already on the computer checking blogs, facebook and e-mails – there are things to be done so I’m procrastinating! And loving it!*) I watched last nights sunset from the lanai and sooo badly wanted to beg Brad to let me go to the beach to take in one last gulf coast sunset… too bad i didn’t! Looks like it was a gorgeous one! The offical move date is getting closer! I can’t wait until Naples is home 🙂 You really do have perfect weather right now!
~Beth
You make me wish I was a snow-bird. Thanks.
I smiled all the way through this post. Especially during the story of Lainey and the trapoline thing. That girl’s brave and beautiful.
My daughter, who was three last summer, went on a similar trampoline bouncy ride thingy at a theme park last year as per her request. As we were waiting in line I was also trying to think of encouraging words for when she chickened out at the last second, and was pleasantly surprised when she did in fact end up going on and enjoying herself. I teared up and choked on my words as I yelled my words of enthusiasm to her as she bounced happily. I will never forget that day because it’s one of those days when I really realized that yes, she really truly is totally growing up. And damn is it ever bittersweet!
The picture with the hairclips? Yeah, my husband came from the other room to check on me because he thought I might have lost my mind for a minute. Hilarious!
And my, that Nella is getting SO MUCH HAIR! I bet you are having soooo much fun with that!
LOL! The crime scene is hilarious! It’s like one of those eye tricks…now that you pointed it out that’s all I see! 🙂 Love the silhouette shots!
your lainey has me crying. so much like my cora. who is bound and determined to get her ears pierced next week. and stella keeps trying to tell her how much it will hurt (stella has yet to do it). and yet … my little middle is so SET on getting it done. NOTHING will sway her. she amazes me. daily.
yay. lainey! how awesome you are!
(i’m a lovespell girl too. i just pulled it out after i couldn’t handle the sweetness while pregnant – love that smell.)
The story about Lainey on the bungee thingy left me with my mouth literally hanging open. You go, Lainey girl!!!
And the picture of her with the hairclips…such a serious face! Priceless. One of my all-time favourites!
such glad and happy little spring-y tidings. love it.
big love, groovy girl.
“She tried hard to pretend she didn’t think this was funny when she walked out of her room like this the other day.”
bahahaha…I never comment (okay, hardly comment) because you already have a bajillion others commenting away, but I just thought you should know that I snorted snot all over my keyboard.
your silhouette reminds me so much of the last page of Paper Bag Princess!!!! classic.
also, love the Speed reference. hotshot 🙂
You crazy lady! I love the visual of your “outline” dropped on a sunset canvas. Totally the right words…
I am too craving spring as my flowering cherry tree is just starting to pop,.
I am a regular reader of your blog. You words and photos are SUCH an inspiration for so many people. Thank god you are out there spreading some joy. Oh, and can I just mention again that your photo are simply some of my most favourite. You’ve got serious talent!
Keep sprinkling!
My 4 year old daughter Lilly (who has DS) loves that bungee trampoline thing – she tried it for the first time when she was 2 and we lived in New Zealand and she was hooked – they were really common over there and she loved it! Glad Lainey enjoyed the experience!
My daughters got such a big kick out of Lainey jumping in the air on the trampoline. We have one of those at our super mall and they love to watch people with awe as they jump, telling me they personally would NEVER be so brave. I hope someday they will 🙂
And, the picture of your Dad making the face!!! Love it!
So cute. You dance beautifully, its just more free than the professional’s style ;-p
Awwww! I love the clips!! I can’t wait till my baby does those crazy things!!!
http://danirousseau.blogspot.com/
Oh waw, Lainey IS one big girl. I mean, those bungy things are scary!
I can’t believe your weather, it makes me want to move down there. I live in Montreal, Canada, and we just had yet another snow storm a couple of days ago… So enjoy the beach for us, poor northerners!!! 😛
Ahhh, that is such a lovely picture you paint! SPRING! Chicago could feel it today and this blog makes me want it even more! Can’t wait to put on some flip flops and dress my baby in some turquoise! And I LOVE the hairbow picture of Lainey! I totally see that in my future… Enjoy that warm weather for us Northerners!
Tell your sister it’s ok to do it with lunch dishes, but don’t ever pull that stunt with oatmeal. Or the bowl will have to soak for weeks.
I <3 VS Lovespell!!
OMG, I’m laughing so hard at your description of Lainey’s Eurobungy experience! I had to read it aloud to my husband and brother-in-law, who happen to be sitting next to me, and they had a good chuckle too. Your kid is too flippin’ cute. 🙂
LOVE! i am always so encouraged by your blog. I just started one.. my little girl is due first of may! YAY! learning heaps from your blog.. be encouraged!!!:)
I went on that ride in Whistler, BC… totally nuts… loved every minute of it. Did you try?!? (And next time, I’m mustering up my courage to try the zipline!!)
Way to go Lainey!! What a big girl! I love how kids continue to amaze us as they grow and bloom. And the hairbows? Pfffttt, too cute! Love her dancing silhouettes too, so graceful. Your’s, well, um….did I mention I studied forensic science? I can’t help but giggle everytime I look at it with your analogy.
And tell your sister, I have so stashed the dirty dishes before rushing out of work, back in the days before SAHM-dome. Now? I have been known to stash dirty dishes in my oven when the dishwasher’s full and empending company is arriving soon. :-O
I love how Nella sits with one knee up and the other leg stretched out, with her foot crooked down. <3 And the “Oh” face? I’ve recently become aware of how much we do it here too. See, there you go Kelle, raising awareness once again. 😉
Lainey is getting so big!! Such a pretty little lady. 🙂
ok is it just me or does Nella look older all of a sudden? especially in that last picture….uh why do they grow up so fast?!?!
Kelle i LOVE your blog, everything about it! i wish you could blog everday (you know cause i’m sure you have nothing else to do 😉 )
I KNOW KEL, that’s how I feel about Pizza; it’s almost a guilty little secret, glad to know I have company. I love love love the silhouette pics. Great post as always…keep ’em coming.
Oh and forgot to say…I SO WANT YOUR DAD TO BE MY DAD!!! He rocks 🙂
I love reading about Laneys dancing! As a performer and a former ballet teacher, that age group was my favorite class! I love seeing littles take to dance. Her mama got some serious air in that leap, credit where credit is due lady!)
I laughed out loud at the first picture of you! Okay, so there was no grace, but you looked like you were living it up! Good for you!
Have a wonderful Thursday, Kelle!
Kelle~
Your words and pics about Lainey, well, I have no words……….
But priceless comes to mind:)
Susan from Boston
Another great post, Kelle. I need to try this Lovespell everyone is raving about!
LOVE all of your pastels too! It’s beginning to feel like there is some Spring hope in the future up here in Michigan and it’s so delicious. And GO Lainey!!! Holy moly! I would have been a nervous wreck watching my almost four year old launch into the air… but good for you not to discourage her from doing it! It made me stop and think, “Geeesh, what would I do?!”
I have a shy, quiet, timid little guy and he amazes me every day too. Like last night, when his uncle tim asked him if he wanted to have a sleepover and he said yes…and then he asked me if i could go home and get his blankies.
Just have to say your little girl Lainey made me cry this morning because I can’t WAIT to have my own little girl here to watch learn and grow and become her own person. She’s due next month- so I blame the crying on pregnancy hormones of course! 😉 Also, I have a photo of myself at about age four with every bow and clip we owned in my hair all at once. Hairdresser was one of our favorite games! 🙂 Thanks for the dose of happiness this morning.
I couldn’t stop giggling at the picture on Lainey rockin her barrettes. So cute!!
My daughter is almost eight months old…seeing yours grow and learn and play through your blog makes me anticipate her first words, and her first time on a bungee trampoline…I’m loving it!
VS Love Spell-my fave!
Lainey’s bravery had my eyes welling up.
it’s amazing when those little ones you know so well go and surprise you like that. My Geneva did the same thing last summer riding the big giant ferris wheel and even a kiddie roller coaster-that went pretty fast! She loved it.
If I’d run into Poppa and Gary in Michigan (I lived there until, like, last week), I probably would have shrieked for joy and scared us all. So it’s probably better that I didn’t. 😉 I adore Nella’s turquoise outfit…where is it from?
Just wanted to let you know that this is the 2nd day in a row that I’ve let your music playlist play all day at work and I’ve found some new artist that I appreciate! I also feel like family when I say that I’m so proud of Lainey! I’ve been following this blog from a couple days after you posted Nella’s birth story (and went back and read the rest from the very beginning) and I feel like in some ways I might be related! 😀 Happy Thursday and St Patricks Day to you and yours!
I had that same daring spirit when I was a little girl and I still do! In fact, I mortified my husband when last year at the age of 27 I stood in the Eurobungy line in Breckenridge, CO with kids less than half my age (and height) and waited to be catapulted, shrieking like my 4 year old self all the way!
Yay for Lainey! Tell her I’ll Eurobungy with her anyday.
and here I thought I was the only one who put my dirty work dishes in my drawer and left them for days. 🙂 I am so jealous of your warm Spring right now! I’m in Oregon and we’ve had nothing but sideways rain, cold and misery for months now. I think I need to run away! As always, thank you for a lovely blog post and beautiful pictures. I am so glad I found your blog!
Love these silhouette pictures. They’re lovely!
oh man, i don’t know if i’m overly emotional right now or what, but reading about Lainey trying that ride had me in tears. maybe because i know how i would have felt if my son said ” i want to ride it” and how my heart would have sunk on the inside, but i would be so proud on the outside. and doing the nervous laugh the whole time! it’s so bittersweet when they do something that shows us how “grown up” they are getting. great big sigh.
the silhouetts are awesome and i’m giggling at heidi’s comment. ha!
jealous of your beautiful weather. can’t wait for it to get to our neck of the woods!
xo

Loving Lainey’s spirit, grace and courage :))). xox

Wow, what a brave girl. I could never do what she did. High 5 to her
Lainey Rocks…I too have a daughter that needs encouragement and support to try new things. So proud of her!
And I love the family of oh! faces. Keep them coming!
Beautiful as always.
Lainey is G R E A T!
You go girl!!!
I LOVE the picture of Lainey with all the hair bows!!
Your just awesome, I love the ballerina vs. Kelle picture!
I love this post!! So proud of her too 🙂

Loved this post!!! From the sunlit silhouettes, to Nella’s scrumptious smiles, to Lainey’s BIG and BRAVE human elastic blast off…with the universe in her hands (great photos of that adventure)…to her oh so stylish clips & bows in her hair (so funny!!!)…to your description of local Pizzerias (i so get that vacationey feeling)…but what I loved the most about this post is the close up photo of Lainey where I noticed three little precious freckles resting under her right eye…this Mama loves little collections of freckles that seem to randomly fly by and decide “lets rest here on this cute little face” My 6 year old only has 7 little freckles the rest on the bridge of his nose that are oh so kissable. He gets so excited when I notice that a new one has landed, becoming part of the freckle collection, and will say “kiss ’em Mama kiss ’em” (one of my little loves in life…)
Happy days to you
Monique
Appropriately enough, that jump is called a Firebird jump and your photo of it is breathtaking!
Oh how I LOVE LOVE LOVE reading your blog! I love how you LOVE LIFE!!! I was totally shocked that Lainey did the Eurbungy! It would have scared me to death! But then I happened to click on one of your previous posts from Thursday, August 5, 2010-where you wrote: You feed. You change. You snuggle. You pour your soul into them, hoping every internal thought and feeling of goodness and love seeps into every bone in their body, every cell in their frame so that they feel it…so that they know it…so that someday, when they are three and they are big and they are beginning the journey down the new road, they will be equipped with everything they could possibly need to thrive. And WOW it was like YOU did this Kelle – you are doing all of that – which of course is why she had no fear of exploring her little world!!! YOU ARE A ROCK STAR and an awesome Mommy!!!! Thank you for sharing with all of us!
Darlene
Love VS lovespell, and the **black swan move. It sent me into a giggle fit.
I just laughed out loud at the picture of Lainey grinning on the bungee ride! How brave and cute she is!!
Love seeing glimpses of still being “little”….especially while they’re getting big.
And the same goes for Mama! You exude youthfulness and just plain FUN!
Keep leaping,
Kelly
Love the shot outs in color and cup form to U of M! What a fun and great day. The dancing pic is too funny.
OMG the barrette photo is adorable.
Oh my gosh! The picture of Lainey with all the bows in her hair, literally made me laugh out loud. What an adorable picture! She has that “whats so funny?” look on her face! Priceless!
The eurobungy story is both surprising in refreshing! Way to go Lainey 🙂
But why on earth is it called eurobungy?? What do they think is “euro” about it?
I must ask, being “euro”….
😉
Thanks again for always cheering me up. Much appreciated!
I laughed so hard at your ballet move thanks for that. So proud of Lainey trying something new, you go girl!
(AND surprising, I meant to write – too tired, I guess…)
Thanks for the giggles this morning!! What darling kids and family you have.
Cheers from Salt Lake City!
Michelle
I love the dancing silhouettes in the sunset – beautiful, so poetic!
WOW! She is one brave little girl. I don’t think I’d even try it (too old probably break a hip or something) 🙂 Oh, to be young again. Ha!
Beth, sounds like you loved your trip! OH I love the pic of Lainey and hair clips! Congrats to the winner..Kelle, I love how your dad is so much a part of your lives there, and with you so much. You aret truly blessed. I envy you. love the blog mama
I just love you, your blog & your family! Thank your for allowing us into your life through your blog. I especially love the ones where you let us in on how not so perfect you or your life really are, you certainly keep it real. You also make me want to pack my bags & my family & move to Florida. I want to go to Sunday church at the beach in Capri Isle.
You make this Minnesota gal want to live in the south of Florida! At least for right now, as our grey, cold days are slowing turning into the dull, cold days of late winter (with an oh-so-small hint of early spring)… that is the case.
Thanks for transporting me to the world of warmth, true spring and natural beauty.
WOW! Those silhouette photos are amazing! Your description of yours cracked me up! I think yours is pretty awesome!
I love it when our little ones surprise us!
i love this post. that silhouette photo that you have in your house of you holding lainey up when you were pregnant with nella is my favorite photo ever. so these brought up all sorts of giddy goodness.
Ms. Lainey – I am 34 years old and never in my 34 years would I have had the bravery to do that bungie bouncing thing. That was fantastic! Good for you!
Beautiful, as always….the words and the photos! Oh yeah, and also Lainey’s bravery!!! 🙂
Oh my word … that photo of Lainey with the hair bows? Stinkin’ ADORABLE.
Wow! Lainey is so brave; I wouldn’t have had the courage to do that. And those hair bows? What a memory! Nella is as always adorable!
LOVE the silhouette shot of Lainey and palm trees. Awesome.
love the new sandals! where did you get them?
and lainey with all the hairbows – priceless!
I am so living vicariously through your vacation. I hope we go again next year, I already can’t wait.
I LOVE that your daughter surprised you by doing the jumping thing. I find this continually happens as my 5 year old grows more curious, more brave, more him than he was even the day before. This story was such a good reminder to me to not put him, or his little brother, in a box of being this way or that and embracing rather than hesitating when he tries to show a new side.
It’s such a beautiful moment of learning about herself. Thanks for sharing! Have a great rest of your trip!
Lainey is a brave one, for sure – you won’t get me in that thing!
The beach shots area beautiful – longing for some spring here, but not complaining anymore. I’ll take Ohio weather, and offer up prayer for those in Japan who are grieving, struggling and trying to get some semblance of their lives back.
I keep coming back to see if you’ve updated your blog. I need my dose of Nella. 😀
The picture with the barrettes made me laugh out loud – so cute!! I so wish I was on a beach!!
,,,don’t quit your day job babe, leave the ballet to the professionals,,,(smile)
,,,love the photo of lainey and her bazillion barrettes and nella-vanilla in the last photo, she is so so yummy,,,oh happy day!
Thanks for the laughs after a long, hard day. The first silhouettes made me lol! Seriously. Out loud and long! The barrettes picture was pretty funny too! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Kelle,
I do not know how you watched Lainey on that bungee thing! My heart was in my stomach just looking at the pics!!! I didn’t know they let them go on it that young. What a brave little girl.
I love Nella’s sweet little legs and feet. I could just slather some butter on them and go to town! YUM
Oh Lainey’s happy face on that trampoline thing PRICELESS! I look forward to leaving the “fearful 3’s” behind. My older was born in Dec ’07 and she’s in a very “Mommy hoooold me” kind of stage.
I wonder if she’d ever take some thing like that.
Love all the pictures, your silhouette made me laugh.

It’s official. Lainey is braver than I am — yikes! Isn’t it cool when our kiddos surprise us? I often look at mine and say “Who taught you that?” So cool to see our little humans have their own unique spirits 🙂 And as usual, I wanna smooch on Nella in that last picture – SO precious.
The last photo of Nella….is your leg supposed to bend that way…ouch…wish I was that flexible
Okay, where to start?!?!?!
How much do I loooove your silhouette?! pffft. That dancer has nothing on your moves!!
But, sorry to say, Lainy has totally taken the spotlight with her beautiful dance lines. She looks just beautiful on the beach!
And I can’t believe she went on the sling-shot!!! My girl is 4 1/2, and talks really big, but there’s nooooo way she’d do that! You go girl!!!
And lastly….loooooooving the pic of Lainy and the barettes!!!! OMG – I laughed so hard!!! Could possibly be my fave pic ever of her!
Wishing you a happy day!
What great pictures! Thanks for sharing.
I especially loved the ballet shots. I started ballet when I was 5 and danced well into my teenaged years, until an injury side-lined me. I hope your daughter loves it every bit as much as I did!
From beginning to end I was laughing out loud. Love the pictures and I looooove reading about your days.
And Lainey’s question with the word “borned”, oh lordy, I couldn’t stop giggling. So precious.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. As always 🙂
Out of curiosity, I just went to your feedjit (http://live.feedjit.com/live/kellehampton.com/0/) to see the amount of traffic your site gets. It is absolutely INSANE the number of hearts your life has touched. Thank you for making the world a better place.
Those silhouette photos are incredible!
The silhouette photos are gorgeous and I love the photo of Lainey with all her hair accessories on at once!
xo
Lainey’s question to you about -when she was born did you cry happy tears? Absolutely precious!
Hahaha, so funny, the dancing silhouette pics and Lainey’s hair with all the clips- priceless!

I so enjoyed my long weekend with you…and I still smile with the memory of our boney-maroney girl being snapped into the sky on the bungie ride!!! Who was that girl? And Nella–who now so knows her Poppa that she melts into my arms and shoulder like she was designed to fit there…and she was. Perfect weather, but perfect love made it even better. Life stops and breathes on weekends like that. We should all have more moments like that. We can…if we make them. Sieze the day like a bungie ride!
xoxo, Bug & Ruby’s Gram
I love the way you write, your pictures and a glimps of your world:-)
Dude, this post made me smile! I love it!!! Your dance moves to Lainey riding the rubber band to the picture of her in her barrettes…so funny!!!!! Have a great weekend girl!
The picture of Lainey with all of the hair clips had me laughing out loud! Thanks for sharing that! I shall live vicariously through you as you enjoy the nice Florida weather – here in Chicago we are celebrating when the temps make it in to the 50s!
Beautiful pics, as always! I am a dancer/dance instructor and we call that jump a “Capezio”. And I think you nailed it!!!
I want you to know how much you inspire me everyday to be a better mother. I find myself taking the time to really enjoy and cherish my daughters more than I did before. Cause “babies don’t keep”.
Also, Your photography is so breathtaking. Someday, I will have a nice camera too… I hope.
the first picture- that makes my heart sing. i can feel every muscle in my body awaken. it runs deep in my soul… the dancer. thank you.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the picture of Lainey and her hair bows. Hilarious!
And I can’t believe my oldest will be four this summer as well. Time has flown by WAY too quickly. Kudos to Lainey for being so brave! I was floored several weeks ago when Elliott wanted to try a zip line at a friend’s birthday party. He never ceases to amaze me. 🙂
I love the silhouette pictures!
thats made me laugh out loud twice! your falling body landing on a sunset canvas is just so funnt as is the pic of your little girl in the clips, utterly precious! my pops will be 4 in may (may 22nd) and she has a similar soul i think. just loving your blog. thanks for making me laugh today xxxx
I love babies in turquoise too – we put Melanie in a little turq. dress the other day with white polka dots and 2 bright pink flowers (it’s from Target). It just makes their eyes look like the ocean.
WOAH! You needed a warning on the second photo..I squirted coffee out of my nose! Hilarious! Love your humor girl x
We started my girl in three year old ballet, just because she wanted to, I had never danced ballet a day in my life.
Thirteen years later teaching ballet became her first job, eighteen years later and shes preparing to dance for her school’s 20th anniversary. She still loves ballet, and i still love that she loves it (even if I’m only a visitor to that world).]
Ps she taught a gorgeous little girl with DS in her 4 year old class last year, she said it really made no difference to the way she taught the class and that little girl had the biggest smile come concert night.

Tough decision, but the bungee-silouhette shot was my favorite of this batch.
How did I miss this post on Tuesday!?!? What a treat – two posts to read in one evening. 🙂
Your story about Lainey made me cry (wuss!). My little man is growing up so fast, too, and it’s both beautiful and painful to watch. I want to keep him little but watch him bloom all at the same time.
Love, love, love! the hair clips! and Wow for sure, loving Lainey’s fearlessness for new adventure! What a serious cutie pie!
A brave lil’ gal that Lainey is indeed! How fun.
I love your blog, photography and your beautiful girls. The reason for me commenting today though is the photo of the dancer. My cousin is a wonderful dancer and happens to be in Florida for vacation. She posted a new profile pic on her facebook page of her doing a beautiful ballet jump on the beach. Do you happen to know any information about the dancer? Just curious if, in this small world, it could indeed be my cousin.
Aren’t kids amazing? Last summer, my newly minted 6 year old did one of those kinds of rides. Flung high in the air, mamma on the ground praying that a blonde haired sweetie would make it back to Earth. She did, and she was all smiles.
I’m convinced God gave me kids so that I would daily be inspired by them!
