Silhouettes

March 16, 2011 By Kelle

Pop Quiz, hotshot: which of these photos is the real dancer leaping on the beach last night and which one is me, pretending to be a dancer?

Photobucket

Photobucket

If you guessed the graceful swan in the first picture is the real one, you’re right. The second one looks like it needs a chalk outline and some crime scene tape. Like I fell out of a 15-story building and landed on the canvas of a sunset.

All this to say, Heidi and I headed to the beach last night and among watching our kids eat sand and scream at seagulls, we were sidetracked by the beautiful sunlit silhouette of the real dancer who was all whippin’ out the grand jete. And I apologize if that’s not a grand jete, but it’s the only ballet term I know, and I do my best to drop it when I can.

Lainey, unlike her mama, possesses some instinctive grace and poise.

Photobucket

We started ballet for her on a whim, thinking we’d do an 8-week course and peter out like we do a lot of other stuff, but she loves it. Seven months in and the kid passe’s more than she walks. Okay, I lied. I know two ballet terms.

Photobucket
Heidi’s response to the above move…and I quote: Who do you think you are, the (expletive expletive) Black Swan?

At least she properly represents her hometown with her choice of beach cup.

So, where were we?

We enjoyed a night out for pizza earlier this week before Poppa and Gary had to head back to Michigan. I like nights out for pizza. I like that it feels vacationey in that most pizza nights are spent at home, and going out for it is out of the ordinary and therefore more appreciated. I like the vibe of a pizzeria–the framed signed pictures of celebreties swearing it’s the world’s best pizza, the grease-stained tablets the waiters use to pencil in your order, the pitchers of fountain Coke that tastes better than usual…fizzier and colder. I like to read the story on the back of the menu that tells how the pizzeria started…how some young guy had a good idea and a great recipe and poured his life savings into starting a chain some years ago. And I like the little black-and-white picture right next to the story…the one where that young guy is smiling, balancing a great big spatula with the famous pizza pie.

Photobucket
Dude, what is up with our family and this new face?

Photobucket

We had just finished dinner when Lainey caught sight of a young girl taking a ride on the Eurobungy, this giant trampoline/bungee jumping device stationed outside the shopping center where we had dinner. And then my girl shocked me. She pointed and confidently said, “I want to ride that.” I wanted to tell her that I knew better, that she’d be catapulted into the trees, that I knew she’d just start crying to get off the minute we got in line. But I didn’t. I wanted to let her fly…to figure it out for herself even though I knew–like, could bet money–that she wouldn’t follow through. Because she’s timid and little and only three.

“Are you sure you want to ride it? Do you see how high that little girl is jumping?” I asked, careful not to sway my voice to suggest pressure either way.

“I want to ride it,” she said again. So we got in line and I waited for the moment I’d break out my prepared consolation of “That’s okay, Baby. You tried. Maybe next time.”

But she never cried. She never even hesitated. She listened to the instructions, she followed directions, she shy-smiled as her feet lost touch with the trampoline and the motor got louder as she was hoisted higher and higher. I started nervous laughing. We all did.

This is nuts. I know my kid. She’s not this girl. And then the Eurobungee man grabbed my girl’s foot, pulled it down like a sling shot, offered one last “Ready?” (followed by a nod and a smile), and then, BAM. My girl rocketed into the sky with shrieks of laughter that made heads turn in a two-mile radius. My timid little three-year old catapulted toward the fronds of towering Royal Palms that lined the sky, and our mouths gaped not only at the absurdity of a toddler’s silhouette hugging the moon but at her grin and gratification of the human rubber band ride. She surprised me again. My girl is brave and adventurous. She is almost four.

Photobucket
Photobucket

Twenty minutes later, we high-fived and applauded. Bravo, Brave Girl.

She’s on a little metamorphosis, compiling some sweet new adjectives to her ever-growing character.

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
She tried hard to pretend she didn’t think this was funny when she walked out of her room like this the other day.

But under all this brave and adventurous stuff, she’s still just little. She still asks me every couple weeks, “Hey Mama, when I was borned, did you cry happy tears?”

Photobucket

**************************************************************************

Anyway, we’re halfway into the week and can’t ignore the fact that it’s the peak of south Florida weather right now…the best of the best. The very reason the term “snowbird” exists. It’s beautiful and breezy and warm. I am completely swayed by seasonal changes, craving all the things you’re supposed to crave when the calendar turns–pinks in spring and apple spice in fall. I am dreaming of florals and pastels and drapes that dance when the wind from open windows suddenly sweeps in. And currently in love with spring around our home…

I was actually looking back at the post you did about her birth story, and she was making that cute face even at the very beginning (at the end of the post when she’s in the hat, I think)! How pathetic am I that I live 2 miles from the beach, and we n-e-v-e-r go! Granted, the CA coast is not as warm this time of year, but still! Your beach nights have inspired me to trek down there more when it does warm up. And though I have yet to announce it to everyone I know (other than our parents and siblings)…I could definitely use the Every Drink to remind me to drink enough water for my little growing raspberry (according to Baby Center, that’s how big it is at 8 weeks)…expected October 30th! Our first little bundle, and I expect to cry plent-y of happy tears when (s)he is “borned”. 😀

Your spring photos are beautiful and very “springy” (as in pastel colours plus a little girl bouncing on a eurobungee, haha).

As always, your photography inspires me. I’m just beginning to learn about taking pictures, trying to capture precious memories of my three little girls growing up way too fast! I always try for the light, pastelly shades you so beautifully capture, but taking more photos has made me realize how everything here seems to consist of fuller colours – it’s the latitude, I guess. So I get my pastel fix by looking at your beautiful blog, and reading about it gives me a taste of the Florida sun! Thanks for that!

My oldest boy surprised us like your Lainey did you. On our annual visit to the state fair, the year he had just barely turned 6, he asked if he could try the huge rock climbing wall Jeep had set up in a back, forgotten corner of the fairgrounds. He had never done anything remotely like that before but he climbed the entire wall like a pro. I cheered and clapped and, of course, cried as he hit the button at the top right under the red, white & blue flapping in the wind. It was an awesome moment. One I’ll never, ever forget. Ever.

I LOVE the silhouette picture of Lainey on the beach. She looks beautiful and graceful and way to grown up.

I wanted to tell you things have been a bit rough for me lately and I needed to focus on something not my life, so started at the beginning of your blog and read all the way through to Nella’s birth story (where I started reading). It was amazing to see you grow as a blogger/writer. Question though. Did you start posting your work pictures elsewhere or are you not working right now?

Either way, its been a very therapeutic experience. I needed to be inspired to not only get back to the job of being mommy but to kick a$s and enjoy every second of it. My littlest is a week younger than Nella and its going sooo fast. I gotta suck up all the baby before the baby is gone!

(*and yes I’m already on the computer checking blogs, facebook and e-mails – there are things to be done so I’m procrastinating! And loving it!*) I watched last nights sunset from the lanai and sooo badly wanted to beg Brad to let me go to the beach to take in one last gulf coast sunset… too bad i didn’t! Looks like it was a gorgeous one! The offical move date is getting closer! I can’t wait until Naples is home 🙂 You really do have perfect weather right now!

My daughter, who was three last summer, went on a similar trampoline bouncy ride thingy at a theme park last year as per her request. As we were waiting in line I was also trying to think of encouraging words for when she chickened out at the last second, and was pleasantly surprised when she did in fact end up going on and enjoying herself. I teared up and choked on my words as I yelled my words of enthusiasm to her as she bounced happily. I will never forget that day because it’s one of those days when I really realized that yes, she really truly is totally growing up. And damn is it ever bittersweet!

The picture with the hairclips? Yeah, my husband came from the other room to check on me because he thought I might have lost my mind for a minute. Hilarious!

And my, that Nella is getting SO MUCH HAIR! I bet you are having soooo much fun with that!

Loved this post!!! From the sunlit silhouettes, to Nella’s scrumptious smiles, to Lainey’s BIG and BRAVE human elastic blast off…with the universe in her hands (great photos of that adventure)…to her oh so stylish clips & bows in her hair (so funny!!!)…to your description of local Pizzerias (i so get that vacationey feeling)…but what I loved the most about this post is the close up photo of Lainey where I noticed three little precious freckles resting under her right eye…this Mama loves little collections of freckles that seem to randomly fly by and decide “lets rest here on this cute little face” My 6 year old only has 7 little freckles the rest on the bridge of his nose that are oh so kissable. He gets so excited when I notice that a new one has landed, becoming part of the freckle collection, and will say “kiss ’em Mama kiss ’em” (one of my little loves in life…)

You pour your soul into them, hoping every internal thought and feeling of goodness and love seeps into every bone in their body, every cell in their frame so that they feel it…so that they know it…so that someday, when they are three and they are big and they are beginning the journey down the new road, they will be equipped with everything they could possibly need to thrive. I am so living vicariously through your vacation. I hope we go again next year, I already can’t wait.

I LOVE that your daughter surprised you by doing the jumping thing. I find this continually happens as my 5 year old grows more curious, more brave, more him than he was even the day before. This story was such a good reminder to me to not put him, or his little brother, in a box of being this way or that and embracing rather than hesitating when he tries to show a new side.

It’s such a beautiful moment of learning about herself. Thanks for sharing! Have a great rest of your trip!

Lainey is a brave one, for sure – you won’t get me in that thing!
The beach shots area beautiful – longing for some spring here, but not complaining anymore. I’ll take Ohio weather, and offer up prayer for those in Japan who are grieving, struggling and trying to get some semblance of their lives back.

Oh Lainey’s happy face on that trampoline thing PRICELESS! I look forward to leaving the “fearful 3’s” behind. My older was born in Dec ’07 and she’s in a very “Mommy hoooold me” kind of stage.
I wonder if she’d ever take some thing like that.

Love all the pictures, your silhouette made me laugh.

How much do I loooove your silhouette?! pffft. That dancer has nothing on your moves!!
But, sorry to say, Lainy has totally taken the spotlight with her beautiful dance lines. She looks just beautiful on the beach!
And I can’t believe she went on the sling-shot!!! My girl is 4 1/2, and talks really big, but there’s nooooo way she’d do that! You go girl!!!
And lastly….loooooooving the pic of Lainy and the barettes!!!! OMG – I laughed so hard!!! Could possibly be my fave pic ever of her!
    Wishing you a happy day!

I especially loved the ballet shots. I started ballet when I was 5 and danced well into my teenaged years, until an injury side-lined me. I hope your daughter loves it every bit as much as I did!

I so enjoyed my long weekend with you…and I still smile with the memory of our boney-maroney girl being snapped into the sky on the bungie ride!!! Who was that girl? And Nella–who now so knows her Poppa that she melts into my arms and shoulder like she was designed to fit there…and she was. Perfect weather, but perfect love made it even better. Life stops and breathes on weekends like that. We should all have more moments like that. We can…if we make them. Sieze the day like a bungie ride!

We started my girl in three year old ballet, just because she wanted to, I had never danced ballet a day in my life.

Thirteen years later teaching ballet became her first job, eighteen years later and shes preparing to dance for her school’s 20th anniversary. She still loves ballet, and i still love that she loves it (even if I’m only a visitor to that world).]

Ps she taught a gorgeous little girl with DS in her 4 year old class last year, she said it really made no difference to the way she taught the class and that little girl had the biggest smile come concert night.

I love your blog, photography and your beautiful girls. The reason for me commenting today though is the photo of the dancer. My cousin is a wonderful dancer and happens to be in Florida for vacation. She posted a new profile pic on her facebook page of her doing a beautiful ballet jump on the beach. Do you happen to know any information about the dancer? Just curious if, in this small world, it could indeed be my cousin.

Aren’t kids amazing? Last summer, my newly minted 6 year old did one of those kinds of rides. Flung high in the air, mamma on the ground praying that a blonde haired sweetie would make it back to Earth. She did, and she was all smiles.

I’m convinced God gave me kids so that I would daily be inspired by them!
