List Check

May 23, 2012 By Kelle

Give a girl a list, and she’s going to want to cross things off.

That said, I’m movin’ right along with my mini bucket list. Large paint strokes in varied shades of pale blue are staggered across one living room wall, a thin layer of sand covers the laundry room floor from our return from beach sunset Monday night, and last night, the girls and I transformed our bathroom into a spa.

Photobucket

This will be a weekly event now because all the sistahs in the house enjoyed it.

Lainey: Mom, we need cucumbers for our eyes.
Me: We don’t have any cucumbers.
Lainey: We can use bananas.
Me: You are brilliant, Child.

Photobucket

Moon River can accompany anything. I love that song.

And ballet? One week in, and Sister owns the place.

Photobucket

I can’t take the leotard off after class. I let her wear it all day because it makes me smile. And then at night, when I finally take it off and put it aside, I stand there for a minute, next to her dresser, staring at the small square of folded pale pink spandex next to the tiniest ballet shoes you’ve ever seen. And I have a mama moment where I connect with my twelve-year-old self. The one who spent many daydreaming hours wondering what it would be like to have little girls.

Photobucket

So maybe I cut a shirt. Do it. Take a little baby t-shirt and cut the neck off. Bring back the Flashdance.

*****

Finally, the beach. Monday night was glorious–glorious, I tell you. A spontaneous text. Mamas who answered. And this wonder-twin-powers-activate moment where we put our imaginary fists together and promised that yes, we’re doing this. Many times this summer.

Lainey’s friend Lauren giggles. All the time. If you barely look at her, it starts. Belly-shaking giggling. It’s contagious.

Nella ran fearlessly, right toward the waves and right past the shells that border the water’s edge. And yet she knew to stop at shin depth, bracing herself for the few white caps that knocked her down, and then standing again, proud and smiling.

Photobucket

And this one?

Photobucket

In a book club Skype chat the other night, we were discussing sibling needs. I explained some recent feelings I had regarding how we recognize and praise Lainey’s strengths. Her attentiveness and love for Nella is, no doubt, obvious to so many, and she hears “you’re an incredible big sister” almost every day. I love that–I dreamed of that, and yet I’ve been very careful lately to recognize the other qualities that make her who she is as well–her creativity and ingenuity, her free spirit, her imagination and her constant awareness of others’ needs. Her personality is complex, and it’s important for me to continually embrace the many things that make my girls unique individuals, one of which is their incredible attentiveness to each other.

Photobucket

I love that these moments of recognition and readjusting how we parent just naturally evolve. We figure things out. That truth reminds me not to worry so much about the future. All those questions we have? What will their relationship look like? How will we meet their needs? How will we teach them? How will we know when they need something? I am confident that we will figure them out. And it might mean doing something one way and changing it a week later because we realize we need to readjust.

Photobucket

Either way, we’ll know. Mama’s intuition.

I loved reading your week mini bucket lists and made note of several new things I want to do this summer.

A few of yours:

* Pay for someone’s order behind me in the drive through line ~Maria
* Write a heartfelt letter to my daughters AMAZING kindergarten teacher’s principal about how incredibly awesome she is ~Michelle
* Learn some crazy Thriller moves and practice the hoola hoop for our last day of school teacher skit ~Kelly
* Pick pea shoots from my vegetable patch and eat them on the lawn ~Fiona
* Celebrate the end of another successful school year for my kiddos with roasted hot dogs and marshmallows ~Halie

Summer is on the horizon, and an upcoming family road trip has me excitedly dreaming.
(Chicago and Michigan book signing information to come!)

Tea Collection is returning in sponsorship this month, bringing beach essentials and vibrant prints, just in time for summer. Tea’s soft, lightweight knits are perfect for our tropical weather, and I love the global infusion their styles reflect. We love our Indonesian Batik Dress (on sale!) and wear-with-everything Sanuk sandals (also on sale).

Inspired by world travel and notorious for comfort and style, Tea Collection continues to provide unique and colorful clothing for both women and children. In addition, their company supports global efforts that benefit children. We love our Tea clothes, and we love having Tea Collection a part of Enjoying the Small Things.

There is a happy summer laziness that is slowly seeping its way in our home. The boys are counting down the days for “school’s out.” I am making lists in my head of what we will pack for our road trip. The bucket of sidewalk chalk holds nothing but nubs, and we’re due for new bubbles, new chalk, new flip flops and some front yard planting.

Good night.

Enjoying: Mini Bucket

May 21, 2012 By Kelle

I do love a good birthday party, a festive holiday, opportunities to pop the cork, blast the confetti and do my now well-choreographed high-on-life dance (in my head, it goes a little something like a kick, step, high kick, twirl, bounce, bounce and jazz hands–subject to variation, of course). But (yes, there’s a but) the best, most contended parts of me purr most during the in between. When, instead of grabbing a megaphone and shouting “Life is Beautiful!”, I whisper it softly to myself.

This megaphone/whisper relationship is part of growing up for me (which, for the record, is a forever process–one in which an “all grown up” stamp is certainly not the goal). When I was a teenager, a friend once told me, “I like your soft smile. Your closed mouth one–the one you don’t do very often.” Which I very well could have taken as “I hate your real smile; you have big teeth,” but I didn’t.

The point is, for every extrovert, there are valid introverted needs too. For me, that means putting the megaphone down, telling my feet to walk a bit between the cartwheels and quietly and calmly enjoying simple moments. Smiling softly.

Photobucket

Post-party, I did that this weekend. And I recognized, time to step back a little bit and make sure I’m doing it more often.

With that said, I am enjoying…

My girl’s birthday, my birth day.

Photobucket

On the actual day, we gave her some options of special things to do. She wanted a Cracker Barrel pancake breakfast with her friend, Aleena.

Photobucket

And pierced ears.

Photobucket

She smiled nervously and sat very still, holding her friend’s blanket. When it was over, she gripped me tightly–no tears–and occassionally turned her head to get a shot in the mirror of her new bling.

Photobucket

I’m finding so many new ways to tell her I love her. The challenge is thrilling.

Five Year Old Things

She brings me a sheet of paper and a pencil and tells me exactly what to write. I carefully follow her instructions. She asks for a strip of tape. She hangs the new sign on her door.

Lists.

I like lists. A lovely friend texted me this morning with a “Happy Monday, what are you looking forward to this week?” And I thought about it a minute before settling on the fact that I will give myself plenty to look forward to. I will make a list–a miniature week version of a bucket list, full of very doable tasks, and I will cross them off all week long and celebrate on Friday.

My Week Ten (oh, this could very well be a Monday thing…watch out)

1. Text someone randomly every day this week. Pick a person and let them know you are aware of what’s going on in their life; that they are important.
2. Beach sunset.
3. Create a care package for a friend’s child. Stickers, coloring book pages, temporary tattoos, hand written notes, a leftover lei from Lainey’s party. Tell them they are awesome. Get it to the post office by Friday.
4. Wear two french braids. Tie them with ribbon.
5. Put the kids to bed, turn the phone off and watch a movie on the couch with Brett.
6. Bake something new. Take a plate of said sweets to a neighbor.
7. Pick out paint colors for Summer Project Debeigify Everything 2012. Paint big brush strokes of sample paints on wall so now you have to paint.
8. Go online and search Florida getaways for family staycation destinations this summer.
9. Make a Summer Inspiration Board with kids–fill it with things we want to do this summer.
10. Spa Night with the girls. Play music in the bathroom while we paint nails, do face masks and tell stories.

Photobucket

You know how excited I am for this week now?

C’mon. Join in. Can’t think of ten, how about three…or five? Make a mini bucket list–just this week. What are you going to cross off your list? Celebrate with me this Friday. Print off your list, hang it somewhere you’ll see it, and cross things off with bright markers.

And that’s a very good place to say good night.

Photobucket

Insert closed mouth smile. I think I’ll go take a moon walk. Alone. I’m leaving my megaphone at home…but bringin’ my high-on-life dance.

Kick. Step. High kick. Twirl.

Five Years: A Luau Party

May 20, 2012 By Kelle

I am certain that the most joy I’ve ever experienced in one moment was felt at 7:45 p.m. on May 18th, 2007. Six pound, six ounce Lainey Love fit in my arms and stretched across my chest in a way that filled a void I didn’t even realize existed. In that moment, she gave me a gift–a title I had dreamed of for a very long time. “How does it feel to be a mom?” Brett asked me in the delivery room.

Five good years have filled the span of time between then and now, and in them–much happiness.

Photobucket

We celebrated that happiness today at our girl’s birthday luau, expressed best I think with little words and many photos.

As always, on these occassions I watch her a little more closely, sentimentally aware of all the ways in which she’s grown–how she expresses herself, how she speaks to her friends, how she merges both leader and follower traits in a way that makes me so very proud.

Photobucket

Today was a vibrant celebration in many ways. And for that, I am happy.
You know what else makes me happy? Our lawn, our home, our driveway just spilling with little friends whose names are said many times in our home these days because, at five years old, it is quite obvious that there is a deeper recognition and appreciation for friendship. Lainey knows their names, who their brothers are, how old their sisters are, who can’t eat peanut butter, and who’s turning five next.

I look forward to many more occassions when these friends will once again fill the spaces in our home.

So maybe I watched Lani Maka teaching the hula on Youtube a few times this week. And maybe I know all the words to “Little Brown Gal” now. The kids were enthralled and picked up the moves after the first two hip sways.

More from the weekend and Friday photo dump on Monday. I will add an addendum to this post with party details and vendors on Monday as well.
