Nella woke up early this morning, her first little croaks whistling out from the bassinett butted as close to the edge of our bed on my side as I can get her. I un-spooned myself from Lainey and blindly stretched my hand out until I felt Nella’s fingers grasp mine, but it was obvious after a few more croaks and the sound of her legs kicking that she was up for good…even though the sun had yet to yawn and stretch. So, I scooped her up and we stumbled through the blackness to the door, out into the kitchen where I fumbled to make coffee, her body molded to my hip like soft clay while we listened together to the hissss and purrrrr and spputtt of the coffee pot and finally the slow, hot trickle we were anticipating. She was still groggy, and I half wondered if she fought to stay awake just for this moment…because she knew that the true magic happens in the quiet of that sliver of time right before the sun rises.
We did something we don’t ever do. Because usually we’re still dreaming this time. But, today…we ventured outside.
We snuck out to watch the sun rise, trespassing across dewy lawns to our neighbors’ backyard where their big swing sat still, overlooking the lake, waiting for us.
And it was quite magical, that shift change between moon and sun. You know that crazy transition at a hospital when the new shift arrives and nurses are going over charts and making sure the incoming staff know what’s been done? I saw that this morning. Except, right about the time the moon started explaining what needed to be done and where he left off, the sun cut him off. And he goes, “Dude, I got it. I’m the sun. Now, go to bed.”
Bravo, Sun.
You know that adventure of nothingness I referred to earlier this week? It had an encore. Except I wouldn’t be doing the adventure of nothingness justice unless I tipped my hat to every bit of somethingness we get from it.
Travel is good. Busy schedules are good. Having important places to be and amazing people to see is all good. But, like fields that rest before a productive harvest season, I find these small-but-very-big-moments huddled up at home so very good for my soul.
So, we did just that this weekend. We did nothing and so-very-something all in one.
And, look who’s got chompers…
I am refueled.
The sun is set. The babies await. …good to come.

KELLE HAMPTON, you have inspired me greatly. I am new to blogger and saw that one of my friends is your follower so decided to check it out. Your writing is amazing and so are all of your lovely photographs of yourself, friends and family. I’ve enjoyed looking though them, well as many as I’ve been able to. I’ve sat in front of my computer most of the day reading all the lovely words you have made art. I commend you greatly for all that you do, and can not wait to read posts to come.

My little bear is up at 6am or earlier everyday. Even though I would just love her to sleep just a little later, I always take a breath and find her peering at the door through her crib slats, we both always smile. I make tea with my little clay on my hip too π
I have not been over for awhile but I LOVE Nella’s glasses! She looks so refined. Anyway, love your blog. Our little ones are just a few days apart and I have been following since Nella’s Grand Entrance.

What do you do to make her laugh that sweet way…? She looks down as if she heard the funniest thing she’s ever heard!
And the Teef, I see two little teef! To me, she looks likes she making all the mile stones right on time.
And Lainey…the baby of her face is slowly moving into a little girl face, beautiful. My baby is 9 and I look at her all the time and say “my baby is gone” and I miss it.
Have a great week!

I love those small-but-very-big moments at home, oh so much! And I remember those uninvited early mornings with alarm clocks with no snooze buttons, from not all that long ago. I was always ever so thankful for their sweet toes, noses, & fingertips on those mornings. But, I am inspired at how you emraced the reality that your waking hour had been pushed back by such sweetness. Love that you share your family love with all of us! :>:>

It’s always darkest before the dawn! “Dude! I got it. I’m the sun!” I literally laughed out loud. Can’t help but think of you saying that to ebb as flow… flows in. “Don’t worry, Ebb! I got this!” We all have our lows – it makes us appreciate the highs all that much more… helps us open our eyes to all the good stuff we weren’t paying attention to.
I absolutely love Nella’s crazy hair and sleepy eyes yet a giant grin that spreads from ear to ear. She truly is a blessing to you and your family – and thanks to your blog, your love of words and photography, she is a blessing to the world!
We’re glad your voice and creativity are back!!
I’d give anything to watch a sunset at Wiggins Beach (not sure if that’s what everyone calls it – but that’s what I call it – think there’s a Del Noir in there somewhere… At the end of Immokalee). Sunsets are by far my favorite!! There’s a little magic in watching the night take over the day, tucking in every smile and laugh, even the tears into a special place into your heart and mind promising another chance to do it all again the next day.
Keep Rockin’!

I’ve read for a while now and never commented that I can remember. It always feels a little stupid to comment to someone I don’t know and who will never really know me…But I can’t help myself anymore!
There is something about Nella that is so astoundingly beautiful. Pictures of her often bring tears to my eyes. It’s so, so hard to learn the lesson in life that it’s the very things that are, at first glance, considered broken, lowly, imperfect, not “ideal” (by who’s stupid standard anyway!?!) that really and truly are the most beautiful and blessed things that could ever exist. I’ve always struggled with my faith and what I really believe….but the fact that Jesus kept pointing to the things the world seemed to despise and saying “hey, that’s where you see God” makes me give him some reverence.
Thanks for opening up your life. It can’t always be easy. But it’s really had an impact on me, and obviously many, many other people as well.

Sunrise is way under-rated, in my opinion. Even coffee smells differently when brewed before sunrise. Babies seem to intuitively recognize this goodness…fighting them on it comes to no good as far as I can tell!
Not a cavalier comment, by the way – we flew home from Hawai’i last night. Ada stayed loyal to San Francisco time which translated into lots of Hawaiian sunrises (up at 3:30 am with the time difference) and very few sunsets! Still, I wouldn’t trade a million sips of mai-tai for the pre-dawn beach walks with my daughter humming as she snuggled next to my chest.
Nella and Ada are a couple of smart cookies π

Smiles that reflect such happiness it quints her eyes. I wonder what the world looks like through happy eyes…maybe clearer, brighter. I think we should all look at our world with happy almond eyes. I am an early bird, usually up hours before sunrise, and my oldest daughter who is 9 (…and a 4th grader- don’t know how that happened. I just blinked and she was halfway grown) has always been an early bird too. She rose at 5 a.m. for most of her first 2 years, and we always enjoyed that time alone. She still gets up many days with me and enjoys the peaceful, beautiful time just as the sun is making it’s debut. My baby girl, who is 5 now, is much more of a night owl, but even she appreciates the early morning. She’ll climb out of bed and come snuggle in my lap for maybe 20 minutes, and as soon as it’s daylight hop back into bed for the rest of her sleep:)

I read your post on Friday, and made a very special promise to soak it all in this weekend..and boy did we ever. For the first time in a long time I really enjoyed our “home”. cooking, cleaning, baking, football, wagon rides, sidewalk chalk…a lot of nothing, yet “something”, just as you described.
THANK YOU for such wonderful inspiration. By the way, my husband is laughing at me for my push to pretend it really is “fall”. The recent cool morning temps aside, He’s like “dude..it’s still 90. it’s hot. why are we having soup?” oh well..little does he know i’m just getting started..

Loved your description of the changing of shifts between moon and sun. Your picture with the palm trees reminded me of one of the last times I was outside to witness the changing of the shifts. It was one of our trips to Maui… We arrived at our room at almost midnight. We poured a glass of wine and stayed up talking on the lanai all night, literally about 100 feet away from the beach. Next thing we know we’re looking up in one direction at the darker sky above the Pacific and see the bright small moon fading away, and behind us rising above the mountains is the huge red sun. It was one of those senses-tingling, I’m-so-happy-to-be-alive-on-planet-earth moments. Thanks for helping me remember!

I had a similar morning this morning my little man was up, when I am usually getting showered and dressed for work. I sat down with him and he just collapsed into my chest and laid there so cute and cuddly. I wanted nothing more than to curl up in bed with him again. Your musings on the sun reminded me of a delightful children’s book called The Rooster’s Gift by Pam Conrad. It’s about a rooster who thinks he is actually causing the sunrise, instead of just heralding the inevitable.
Your musings on the rest before sowing reminded me of a beautiful Judy Collins song called “The Fallow Way” written, I think, after the death of her son. So, melancholy, certainly, but lovely.
And I love your quest for a life more deeply lived. It is inspiring.

Kelle- I have waited a long time to unveil my love for your blog. As a mother of two boys (3 1/2 and 5 months) I have found invigoration and inspiration in your writing. It sounds so silly to say that a person you have never met, nor even know has changed your outlook on life, but you are slowly doing just that for me. In my most frustrating moments of life and motherhood, I find myself finding the good, enjoying the moment!! I feel as if I know you and your children, I was so giddy over the pictures of Nella with her new glasses you would have thought she was my own, she brought a smile to my face!! Oh how that crinkle-nose-newly-toothed smile made my day! I am a card-carrying night owl but must admit your words made me momentarily nostalgic for the uber-early baby mornings. Thankfully my guys are now both big snoozers. But there is something so magic about a sunrise….
cheers,
Kate

Oh how I love to read your stories Kelle. You are exactly the type of mommy I hope to be. As I continue on my journey of one day having a beautiful little baby, your blog helps me remember that all the waiting is worth it. That one day I will get to take my own little bundle of joy out onto the back porch at 5:30 am and enjoy it being just us and the changing sky! Thank you for your everday mommy moments that make this waiting and trying journey a little bit easier.

We don’t know each other and I can’t even remember how I came across your blog but I love to read your words and see your photos. Your story, your outlook, your life, is precious. I think you already know this, but, you are abundantly blessed and you, in turn, are passing on your blessing on to me and others, through your blog. Thank you for sharing your life with me.

I love your Nella…..just like I love my God daughter La. La aka Lauren was born with Down Syndrome and is now 5 1/2. The joy this child has brought to our lives is immeasuable. Just like Nella…La got glasses at.. the same age. Our doctor described it beautifully…think seeing a Monet…blurry….then a Rembrandt perfectly clear. Bless you and your wonderful family!!!

Love your little one in her glasses. Just found out this soon to be 40 year mama of 4 needs glasses too and guess who I thought of as I tried on pair after pair?!? Yes, miss Nella Bean!
Just posted some photos of a shower we had for Sofia…she wore Matilda Jane…I notice your girls in it too. I’m OBSESSED as I’m a new mama of a girl and had NO IDEA how freakin’ adorable it is!

I love your blog, I have been a fan for some time but never commented. Your pictures are amazing, your outlook on life is great. I am the mother of two beautiful girls as well and each day you inspire me to love every minute with them, I always have but with more intensity now. I love Nella’s bedhead this morning. So sweet! Keep it up, you are amazing and I love “knowing” you and your life.

Oh boy, this was well timed…my little man has been pushing the “Early to bed, early to rise” adage to a whole new level of late. I have loved taking in the changing season this way (we’re in VA) and am marveling in the cooler, autumnal light in the early morning, but it’s nice to connect and think about all the other mamas around the world that are snuggling on their sweet little one at that exact same moment. Maybe I’ll catch you under tomorrow’s rising sun? π

love that note of … “obvious … that she was up for good.”
god do i know that feeling.
and chompers?
oh we’re getting ’em too.
ooch.

I love Nella’s fuzzy little bed hair as she sits on the sidewalk. She is such a happy little girl. You promised us a glimpse of the bottom of your coffee mug and what treasure you painted there. And eight months later we are still waiting for that treasure to be revealed. Today seems like a good treasure dicovery day.

Love this. Love your writing as well! It’s inspiring, although I teach writers (classroom teacher) and do not consider myself as a writer.
You even look terrific in the bubble bath, by the way. Simply amazing. It’s like your outlook on life is from the inside out! Thanks for inspiring us all!

I’ve been reading your blog for a while. I just love to look at pictures of your sweet girls and read your very heartfelt words. I really loved this post. What magical pictures of the sunrise. I’m glad Nella woke you up to take them. π I just had my first baby a month ago, after years of waiting for him and the small things are what matters. They are what I want to capture also. Keep on sharing with us. I’m hooked.

Rik – I love your comment about view through Nella’s almond eyes; she’s in the deep end and everyone else is waiting in the shallows. Yes, what does she see that we don’t? Maybe she has accentuated version of Mama’s rosy view on life. Lucky duck.
I am amazed at LL’s maturing look. Going from 3 to 6, I swear! Have a rocking week (and hopefully enjoy a bit more sleep!)

So cute- I wish I could be awake in the morning like that. My alarm clock doesn’t go off until 7:30, but it may as well be 3 am the way it feels.
I was in Naples this weekend visiting my boyfriend! I kept seeing places you’d mentioned in the blog and half expecting to see you! It’s a great town, and I’ve gotta say, you’re a lucky girl to live there. TOTALLY different from my Gainesville life.
Hope all is well!

Beautiful sunrise…..nothing like it. Especially in Florida….when there’s still so much humidity you wonder if it’s actually a state located inside a very large sauna…so that the humidity is so thick that it almost feels like tiny droplets of rain, only finer…and yet it’s so still and peaceful and sticky all at the same time. Soak it all up…especially that big girl that is looking older by the post and her little chomping gator sister. Enjoy…and cheers to early morning coffee picnics. Marissa

I go to work each morning at 6am, so the dawn and I are long familiar friends. There is something magical about the pre dawn stillness. It always makes me think of the ending of that movie “the langoliers”, when time slowly catches up and fills everything. Still, as nice as dawn is, it’s even nicer when I get to stay in and snuggle longer against my own baby :>

LOVED the nurse analogy, not only because I am a nurse and I totally get what you are saying, but because being a nurse is hard, like being a mom and those sunrises you get to see as a nurse give you hope.
THANKS!

Oh, you’re new header is going to make me pull the cider out of the fridge! Can you tell me the font that you used for your name? Me like it. Simple.
I have to thank you for spreading creativity and inspiration like the seeds of a dandelion . I am hard at work on Alex’s book – on page 26 and gaining momentum. It’s a lot of work, but oh so rewarding. And my book now inspired one of my BFF’s to work on photo books too.
Thanks girly.

Coming here is such a blessing. Always a blessing. I have been so sad this fall. Sad that my baby is growing up. Feeling old and lonely. I know he needs some independence but goodness gracious I miss playing outside on the sidewalk at night. I miss littles : ( Little littles!

Hi Kelle…. I am always inspired by your photographs and your ‘way with words’. So much so, that I enrolled to do two adult photography courses this year so I can improve my skills, and….. I started my own blog. Yay, thanks!
I was wondering if you could let me know what version of ‘microsoft digital image suite’ you use for your photo books. I want to be able to make photobooks for my family but don’t want to commit to a purchase till I know I’m on the right track.
Thanks
