Enjoying the Small Things

September 28, 2011 By Kelle

I was going to post earlier today–sneak one in while Nella slept and Lainey arranged her strawberry scented erasers on the carpet. But there were things to do, my mind was in a few different places, and I’m so glad I saved it for tonight because Pandora is delivering, candlelight is flickering, and I am happy. I like to write when my head is clear and I am happy.

Photobucket

Night writing (not to be confused with Night Rider) is my favorite, for I unravel a bit more reflectively and tend to be more grateful when I’m looking back at the events of our days, and their images are blown-up on a screen that’s reflecting candlelight. Or maybe that’s just my badass rose-colored glasses. Either way, at the end of the day when the street outside my window is dark and the house is quiet, I gain more perspective.

So, in the spirit of fall and candlelight and good music streaming from my computer speakers, what’s a girl to do? Deliver a good old-fashioned Enjoying the Small Things, of course.

*****

Homemade Chicken Noodle
The good mood inducing dinner of champs. Plus, parsley makes me happy. I hope my kids talk about my chicken noodle soup someday. I don’t know why this is important to me, but it is. How horrible is it if I say I can’t wait until they have colds some day just so I can bring them this soup in bed and make it all better?

Photobucket
Chipped bowls are good luck.

Moving on.

*****

Bathtime.
If watching fish swim in an aquarium is considered relaxing, then beholding your kids in a tub is hypnotically calming.

Photobucket

During any particularly chaotic or stressful day, our white flag is raised in a bathtime declaration and, while baths are usually associated with night time routines in our home, the midday bath is making a comeback.

Photobucket
Nella’s giving the “Quit looking at my butt” face.

I love the opportunity in the middle of a day to sit on the toilet (stop visualizing, the lid’s down) in the bathroom, listen to the water and watch my girls knock Happy Meal toys off soap dish diving boards. Which brings me to the bath toy issue. We don’t really have bath toys–the ones that are specifically designated for proper tub use. Other than the last remaining foam letters that haven’t disappeared (we can spell WUJX, XJUW, and SUJX), our bath toy bin is a sad hodge podge collection of headless dolls, happy meal toys, container lids, and strange junk drawer whatchamacallits. Oh and a duck. We have one rubber duck that has miraculously survived.

I like when Sister actually thinks she’s gonna bail the tub and make a getaway.

Bend it Like Beckham
I’ve reacquainted myself with a past love from the 90’s. Remember styling sticks, those bendy rods you use to twirl your hair? I didn’t even realize they still made them, but during one of those dangerous throw-crap-in-the-cart Target trips, I found them. I used only four of them on my damp hair in the morning, pulled them out 45 minutes later and, voila–flowy shampoo commercial hair. Lainey says it’s beau-fi-tal.

Photobucket

*****

The Return of the Dollhouse.
It was Santa’s big gift a couple years ago, and I’ve never admitted that it didn’t go over as well as I intended. I’ve contemplated giving it to Goodwill, but it always seemed Lainey’s little friends were drawn to it whenever they visited, and Lord knows I love having the fun friend house.

Suddenly though, it’s made a comeback. Both girls have been playing with it for weeks–arranging furniture, dragging it into the bedrooms, carefully positioning dolls in bathtubs and on tiny plastic toilets. There are doll house characters–a dad whose left leg Sophie chewed off, a mom whose skirt has a knack for falling off, a son, a daughter, two babies, and a horse trainer. Yes a horse trainer, and don’t ask about the story Brett created about the drama she causes that poor family because it’s a real dollhouse soap opera. She’s scandalous, that horse trainer.

Regardless, I love walking past to see this these days:

Game Watcher.
I don’t know how Nella knows that it’s best she not try to swipe the phone, but she does. When Lainey’s playing a game, Nella just watches–bending right into it and intently following along. But my sweet girl keeps her hands to herself and lets Lainey play alone.

Photobucket

*****

Back to the Lake.
An impromptu walk today, and it was divine.

Photobucket

It’s not miserably hot any more, so outside trips are more enjoyable. Add a bit of a breeze and the shady canopy from the big lake tree, and you might even forget you’re in Florida.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I told Lainey fifteen minutes; we stayed an hour.

Photobucket

Long enough for Sister to take a cat nap…

Photobucket

Photobucket

…and Lainey to pick flowers, gather bleached-out snail shells, and brave the muddy edge of the water to pretend fish.

Photobucket

Photobucket

We’ll be back.

This weekend initiates the blessed October, and my fall freak flag is whippin’ in the little wind we have. Someone said it’s supposed to be “cool” this weekend, and when you hear the word “cool” in Florida after a hot summer, you take it and run.

Good things in store.

Waning Gibbous

September 19, 2011 By Kelle

Friday night, the moon was large, pushed to the center stage of black sky like an understudy who just scored the leading role. For a moment late in the afternoon, you could almost mistake the moon for the sun–just as big and almost as bright.

Photobucket

While the moon had his moment of spotlight outside this weekend, it glowed inside as well.

Photobucket

In the form of fall cravings.

Photobucket
Chili & Football

Brett likes football. He’s not the die hard glued-to-the-screen fan who screams during good plays or misses Christenings and birthday parties for an anticipated game, but he likes watching football. I too have come to appreciate the thrill of roaring fans, the calming voice of commentators, the line-up of spandex-hugged tight ends. It means things are about to slow down and holidays are around the bend. So this weekend, we watched football and did Septemberish things.

The first pumpkin bread of the season. (Last year’s pumpkin bread, Nella still had her glasses.)

Photobucket

And homemade carmel apples.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I woke up at midnight last night to get out of bed and eat the last one. Brett found me hovered over the kitchen island, in the dark, literally gnawing the last hardened puddle of carmel off of wax paper. I said “What?” He said nothing.

My seep-it-in-slowly approach to fall decorating continued this weekend with some crafty homemaking.

Photobucket

We hiked past tall palms and into the sparse evergreens of our woods, scouring the ground for anything that bore likeness to a deciduous tree. We found a nice weathered branch to hang in our dining room. Accessorized with a string of leaves we cut from decorative paper, it pulls a little Michigan into our Florida home.

Photobucket

Lainey chose the paper, glued the sheets together and helped sew the big needle through the finished leaves. And then she ditched me while I was left to finish it by myself. I kind of wish I would have cut the leaves out of felt instead of paper, but felt doesn’t come in patterns and glitter, and Lainey wouldn’t have it.

Photobucket

We’ll swap snowflakes for leaves come December.

*****

Weekends work a bit like shaking an Etch-a-Sketch for us. For all the drawings we’ve accumulated throughout the week–the things we wish we would have done with the kids, the time we wish we would have allotted differently–we make up for it. We shake our week clean and start fresh.

Photobucket

More family walks.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Reuniting with an old friend. I swear, he has a parole anklet that beeps when he’s out of range now. We don’t see him much these days.

And outside play.

Photobucket

Photobucket

More backyard adventures.

Photobucket

Photobucket

And front yard entertainment.

Photobucket
Photobucket

More catching the last of the sun flare from a prickly grass seat–and staying out well past its encore.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

And finally retreating in to etch new drawings to begin a new week.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I’m always comforted by full-circle routines. Moons that wax and wane, tides that forge and recede, seasons that bloom and die out, and weeks that begin with challenged schedules which grow and fall and finally end with redeeming Saturdays. The shifts are both forgiving and motivating, and I thrive on the balance of enjoying this very phase and season while knowing I will never tire–next week, there’s a new moon.

New sponsor, Cozy Rags, joins us this month in sponsorship. Cozy Rags is owned by Nancy, also known as “Grandma Yokie,” who makes all of her beautiful hand made blankets and accessories in her home’s sewing room. Blankets come in a variety of animal or damask prints, are double lined and are made from the very softest material.

Photobucket
Nella obviously loves her plush pink damask stroller blanket.

Cozy Rags makes great baby gifts–if you can bear to part with them.

One commenter on this post will win a baby blanket of his/her choice, courtesy of Cozy Rags.

*****

I think the moon is somewhere between a waning gibbous and a last quarter right now. I don’t know what the hell that means, but in my language it can only mean one thing…half full, Baby.

Here’s to starting out weeks half full. Cheers to that.

Stream of Consciousness, Friday Style

September 9, 2011 By Kelle

*Keeping in mind I don’t have the best luck with bike rides…
*And also tucking away that last Friday was an adventure that involved soaking wet clothes…

There’s a little Friday story that goes something like I pedaled the girls and a dog through two miles of grueling leg rotations today to a little park but didn’t bother checking the weather. Cue thunder and dismal clouds.

So, three underdogs and one trip up the climby rope later, we are pedaling again. Well, I was pedaling again. Faster than I’ve ever pedaled in my life. And the girls are ticked that I let them taste just a drop of the park before whisking them off swings and buckling helmets back on. Which is basically like buckling a large plastic box on your kid’s head. They love it.

Girl on the left is happy pre-storm girl; legs on the right are crazed get-home girl. Plus a trailer hitch inflicted bruise that happens to be shaped like a kite.

Photobucket

And both the sky and the man hole covers I am quickly rolling over speak of impending doom.

Photobucket

So, I tell myself I am Sandra Bullock, and my bike is a bus with a bomb. And, in my mind, I’m holding a steady 50 to keep us from blowing up.

And it works, this game. We arrive home in time–sweat pasting clothes to skin, bangs to forehead, butt to bike seat.

Plus, as I’m pedaling, I hold up my phone to take a picture because this steeple in the sun is killer. So I am happy. Because things like steeples piercing sun rays make me happy.

Photobucket

And look–my kids did have fun at the park.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Nella was unavailable for picture because she was clung to my hip, traumatized from that box-strapped-on-head ordeal. Like I said, she loves it.

Photobucket
We had to go to out of our way to Panera to get this water before we went to the park because I was wheezing and parched, embarrasingly out of shape. Bustin’ out some Old Testament history here, but I would have sold my birth right for this bottle if I had to. So who can tell me what Biblical naughty boy did that? Anyone, anyone…Bueller?

*****

You know how I know today was a good day?

Because I found a gorgeous hand knit sweater for Nella at a consignment shop for…wait for it…$3.50.

Photobucket

Plus, we had a diner date with friends, and we walked in the diner to find our friends dressed in uber-cool 50’s attire. This makes sense seeing as they’re uber-cool. FYI: Mel’s Diner has the best buffalo chicken sandwich this side of the Mason Dixon Line.

This is the part where I make up for Nella not being in the park pictures.

And the grand prize winner for favorite moment of the day (tied with arriving home before storm and scoring $3.50 hand knit sweater)…

Pouring my coffee (yes, he’s back because he is suave and he smells really good and I have a hard time saying no to a nice-smelling man) and walking past my girl’s room to see sunlight spilling in and my girls just talking and playing and loving.

Photobucket

There, that about does it.

Oh wait. Dessert. Friday Phone Dump:

And a dollop of whipped cream and a cherry on top with our new sponsor :

We tried their Zucchini and Yellow Squash Gratin the other night, and it was delicious.

One commenter on this post will be randomly selected to win a free slow cooker, courtesy of RelishRelish.com. Once you’re in, make sure to check out the slow cooker recipes. There’s a breakfast casserole one I’m eager to test out.
