So the time has come. The countdown to Lainey’s Third Birthday Party (a proper noun around here), just two-and-a-half months away. And celebrations of life, in my opinion, are rare and beautiful opportunities to especially suck out the Lifecycle juice. And the way I like to pay tribute to that one, most precious day my babies entered the world…well, we start planning early. That and I’m just plain obsessed with children’s parties. I asked Lainey’s input this year, and she said she wants “a pink party” which I have elaborated into a pink, garden fairy party. So, my mind has begun to spiral into crazy fun project manager mode. My dad’s first suggestion: “I see a canopy. And tulle.” To which I agree. Along the course of the way, I’ll blog about ideas and how to affordably make things, where to purchase materials, etc. and post pictures of everything. So, I guess Project Birthday Party commences. Hoorah. Still can’t believe my little pixie is going to be a ripe three years, and I realized it today when she was talking on the phone with her friend Baylee and I saw her laughing, slapping her knee and saying, “that’s ‘ilarious.”
Her favorite daily ritual has become morning adventures to the lanai where she tends to her new little plants like a mama, shy-smiling proudly while she waters them, turns them and today…sang to them: The ippy ippy pider went up da wada pout.
I promised her a trip to the library today but found myself tied up with various tasks instead until tonight, forty minutes before the ‘libary’ closed, I gave in and was pleasantly surprised to find library night-trips are way more fun than day-trips. The children’s section was clean and quiet and mysteriously vacant. It felt like we had snuck in after closing and could have practically set up sleeping bags between illustrated fiction and biography if we so chose.
Which, now that I think of it, Library Sleepover has just been added to my bucket list.
I love this love affair with books she has and how chubby fingers clumsily turning thick pages of board books just short years ago has slowly metamorphosed into kid fingers carefully pointing to words, making up stories, asking ‘what ‘dat say?’ And the promise of this continued love. Of books and words and writing and late night tuck-ins where her heavy eyes will fall asleep to our reading great stories of legendary classics. And then someday, she won’t want us to read anymore but will instead huddle under blanket tents with flashlights, scouring books of her own interest. But, lucky for us…it’s just the beginning of that book journey and tonight, she was just my two-year old enthralled and happily overwhelmed by all the possibility a room with a sea full of books held for her (and for the poor librarian who had to redo the entire dewy decimal system of Aisle 6 after Lainey ransacked 501.3 through 587.42).
And, oh how I love watching my big girl read my little girl books.
She loves her something fierce but space between bodies is key as there’s a fine line between hugs and choke-holds…thus leading to poor little Nella’s “save-me” faces. I will admit, though, as two-year-olds will be two-year-olds, there’ve been a few times I’ve ticked Lainey off and to “get back,” she immediately heads toward Nella with an evil eye…like she knows my buttons, and there’s a split second where we meet eyes and I know what she’s thinking and she knows I know…and we both make a mad dash for the cradle trying to get there before the other, and it usually ends in the nick of time, her hand grazing the newborn just as I’m whisking the floppy babe out before she wrecks havoc. And I picture this all going down in slow-motion with the Bionic Man theme song in the background. Because every moment has a theme-song, you know.
But, mostly…she’s just sweet.
And, newborn is fleeting, as newborn does. I’m grasping and yet, at the same time, basking…in big, inquisitive eyes. Eyes that scan the room for my voice the moment she hears it.
We hold her – a lot. And it is now second nature to wipe counters, apply lipstick, wash hands, type, etc. with one hand whilst the other engulfs this perfect little body. And I am loving how this little body settles right into that hollow nook between my hip and the inside of my elbow, and when she gets sleepy, that body sinks a little heavier and her head burrows a little deeper and her shallow breathing settles into a deep “hmpppphhhhh” when she’s finally out. And the whole process accelerates my heart just a little more.
And, never mind the tipped over grocery cart, the wadded sock, the lone frog boot, or the ripped cushion on the folding chair that has replaced not one but both cool Craigslist wooden spindle chairs that split down the middle, splintered my butt and nearly caused a broken tailbone when it finally gave in and I crashed to the floor.
You know what’s funny…besides the shock of an unexpected birth and the pain of limitations and letting go of what you dreamed (okay, that’s kind of a lot), there’s just love…plain & simple. SO much love. And I told Brett the other day…You know, before all of this, at any point in my life, pregnant or not, if you would have shown me pictures of Nella and told me she was a baby with D.S. whose mama didn’t want her, I would’ve begged you to let us adopt her…literally begged you to let us take this child and love her ‘cuz I wouldn’t be able to stand that she didn’t have love.
Well, that’s not really a problem.
From a card someone gave us…and I cut it out and it’s propped up on a little shelf in the girls’ room.
My mama just sent us these new knits she made, and I am loving…
There’s a constant range of emotions, obviously, and some days I feel back at Square 1, but today? Today, I just felt so completely lucky to be her mama, proud to show her off at the library with no hesitation whatsoever…and like I’m proving to some cosmic force out there that I indeed can love this girl. I can love like no other.
(Side-swept hair is always referred to as Senator. As in Senator Nella. Did you ever know a senator that didn’t have a combed side-swept?)
This weekend we will be doing Spring mini shoots. And my assistant is preparing to help.
If you’re in the Naples area, we have two slots left if you’re interested (see here for details).
And after ravishing my pantry, scrounging for something sweet the other night only to land on a handful of stale honey nut cheerios and two hard marshmallows, I have replenished the candy jars with an Easter smorgasbord. While the Peeps properly stiffen, the pastel M&Ms call my name. And you know pastel ones taste way better.
We like sweet endings:
March will be good. March will be very good. I’m excited about picking up more work, potential blog sponsors, and writing Chapter 1. I’m really going to write this book.

My favorite Nella picture today is the one with her little rainbow colored booties. In the hazy background, she looks so groggy and sleepy and adorable! Well…that one and the one with the little note and her smiling in the background.
Best Lainey picture is the first one. Those eyelashes!!
And the Help Me is the cutest of both of them. I laughed out loud when I saw it.
Thank you for sharing your girls with us!

Thanks again for a fabulous post!! I will be first in line when your book comes out… And I would love to get a signed copy! Maybe even signed with a baby foot print! 🙂

Hey there Kelle,
Well, be prepared for a New York Times bestseller because you are already a GREAT storyteller! There’s a reason that your blog is so popular, and it’s not a skill that most bloggers have. With your writing skills, authenticity, gut instinct, sense of design, timing, the breathtaking images, sense of humor, the music you choose, pacing of your stories, it’s a powerful alchemy. Maybe you should be a movie director! You can star as yourself. 🙂
Love the HELP thought bubble, too ‘ilarious.
And thanks for your sweet comment on my blog-ski, looking forward to getting up-to-date on some backstories!

Girl, You got too many posts to read so I’ll be brief. I just wanted to recommend the publisher “Woodbine House” for books on DS. They have great children’s books that Lainey would love. We used a couple to educate my then 7 year old son about DS on a level that he could understand. They have board books for Nella, too.

I’m loving all Nella’s knits, too. I taught myself to knit/crochet recently and have made a few cutie things for my daughter, too, and I love showing them off. And I just laughed looking at your playroom. I too have a folding chair at my computer (and even one at my dining room table) from a similar split down a wooden chair. Thankfully mine didn’t quite end the same as yours… But, with a 5 month old and 4 others running around, that is unfortunately what my house looks like often. Such is life. I really enjoyed reading your extensions to the Holland analogy that I sent, as I’m sure many people directed you to that poem. Having been in Italy for 6.5 years, to be abruptly dropped from the plane into Holland, I needed a way out for a while. Thanks for your directions, Pilot! I’m enjoying the rides back and forth between the two and savoring moments from each location. -Ashley

I want to take Nella home with me. My gosh, she is amazingly beautiful. I was a nanny for a little boy with Downs for about a year and I just have such a heart for Downs kids now. They are so much fun, they see the world so differently, they have such an amazing joy inside of them. His parents also didn’t know he had downs until he was born and it was such a blessing to our family to know their story, as it has been to know yours.
And Lainey. What a sweet, precious beauty. She looks like such an amazing big sister.

Kelle,
I have been touched over and over by the wonderful words you impart on this blog. I first saw your blog of Nellas Birth Story on faceobok and I have not been the same since. Even now thinking about it “im not what you expected but please love me” still brings tears to my eyes. Happy tears now, but the raw emotion just rocks me to the core. I am loving watching her grow and Lainey too. Its amazing the lives you are touching all around the world. Im from Australia and sent your blog on to people all around the place, all touched by your birth story blog and now dedicated readers. Go on, write the book. You have a HUGE fan base now 🙂 And I hope you ARE feeding when you read this 😛

Nella has THE most beautiful eyes I have ever seen. And I agree about a book. I went back and read your entire blog after I read your birth story. Spent countless nights when I should have been sleeping while I could (my son was born January 9th) but I couldn’t stop. Every night I read another month. And I was so sad when I finally caught up and there would be no more all nighters reading about your beautiful family. Is it totally crazy to say I am in love with your family? Sending you all the best and can’t wait to see what you do for Lainey’s birthday!

I just though I should finally say hi. I’ve been reading your blog since your beautiful Nella was born. My daughter Katelyn (2) also has DS and I was just laughing out loud at the caption of Nella saying “help” while she was “loved to death,” as we say around here. Sorry I’ve rambled- both your girls are adorable!

Coming on to comment how much I love your blog. Your words are so touching and your girls are beautiful! I wish I was as upbeat as you are when my daughter was born. I wasted way too much time wallowing in my self-pity and mourning the child she wasn’t instead celebrating the wonderful gift she is.
One thing I noticed from your gorgeous pictures is how Nella’s eyes glisten. That is one thing I remember about my daughter when she was a baby is how her eyes were so glossy. I think they’re just beautiful. Reading your blog brings back so many memories.

I am the mother of three and grandmother of one. Everyone of my kids share a love of books and my youngest, 13, hides in his room with a flashlight and tent AND loves listening to his father read to him most evenings. Your life deserves a book. Your life is anything but ‘simple’ or ‘ordinary’ (I’ve read bits and pieces of your old entries) But you have this unfailing ability to appreciate the simple things in life, and to not take anything for granted. I can’t say how much you have changed my perspective. As a new mom, I’ve been battling a hard adjustment to motherhood…and your words are healing and revitalizing. I feel like my world has become such a brighter, more colorful and better place now that you are in it. Can’t thank you enough 🙂

Reading your blog and the comments has made me appreciate the united sisterhood of mommyhood! We hear a lot about mommy wars and the guilt women cause each other (work out of the house vs. work/stay at home, breast-feeding vs. formula feeding, etc.) But YOUR stories are OUR stories, and I see so much of my mommy experiences reflected here. Exhibit A: my four year old has the same strawberry nightgown as Lainey, and she, too, bolts toward my one month old son with frightening speed as I frantically trail behind her yelling “gentle hands, use your gentle hands!” Exhibit B: who doesn’t have a room littered with the happy debris of childhood (random shoes, socks, toys and one piece of furniture that needs a little repair.) Exhibit C: I though I was the only mommy who had to shower/shave legs while simultaneously rocking a bouncing seat. Sometimes being a mommy is . . . well . . . a little LONELY. But your blog always makes me smile and appreciate the small things. Thanks Kelle!

Ah, I love this post. I’ve been reading your story for a while (I clicked through Dig this Chick about a year ago). I never could figure out why I was drawn to your entries – was it your glamour, your photos, Florida . . . now I know. My girls are now 9 and 13 so of course I love your’s and Dig’s blogs ’cause it brings out the love I have for my girls and I get to remember when they were babies.
My girls love the pictures of your girls too – they’d love another sister. For now we’ll satisfy that desire with your story. Thank you!

The picture with Nella saying “help” is perfect. Her expression is priceless.
Your comment about telling your husband you would adopt her if you knew no one loved her really touched me. I’m not sure if anyone has ever shared this site with you but you should check out http://www.reecesrainbow.org. It is an organization that is dedicated to helping find families for children in other countries with Down syndrome (and other special needs). In other countries, most children with Down syndrome are given up at birth. They will live in the orphanage for a few years and then they are transferred to a mental instituition where they will spend the remainder of their days. You have so many readers, so I thought if even one of them sees this comment and is lead to that site it is worth mentioning. These children have so much to give. They are so deserving of love. It breaks my heart to think of these precious souls in such a sad and lonely place.
Anyway, just had to share. Love your blog and all of your beautiful pictures!

Maybe I could set up a photo – session for my “littles” with you. Dreaming… Your words and your daughters are beautiful and precious. I wish you the most blessed day. Amore!

If I may respectfully suggest, please come up with a soundtrack to your story, to accompany the book you will finish once enough chapters of your story have written themselves. Your taste in music is AWESOME (I so wish I was more in tune with tunes), and now I find myself most work mornings opening your blog to read, then simply minimizing it on my PC when I’m done catching up on your life. That way your playlist continues to serenade me throughout each day I’m away from my baby, keeping me emotionally connected to the important stuff. While I do other important stuff, but stuff that’s really not nearly as important as the big stuff.
I’d love to read your book, while at the same time listening to the off-the-beaten-path music that uplifted you, inspired you and effectively aroused Rockstar when you needed it most.

I love the “help me!” picture it made me laugh because we have experienced that exact face so often at my house! Most recently because we have a baby boy with three big sisters who LOVE to kiss him whenever they walk by!

OK, love this post. Your pix are truly incredible. And I can totally dig bare feet at the library and messy play rooms. All good! (Not that you need any blog lovin’ from a rinky dink one like mine, but I’ve posted a link to yours on mine as I really think your message and pix are something special.)
BTW, not sure if you’ve seen it before, but there’s a beautiful little catalog I receive in the mail called Chasing Fireflies. And they love all things fairy (and rock star, for that matter!) for little ones. Maybe check it out for ideas for your shindig. (They have little white t-shirts with fairy wings that I’m obsessed with.)… http://www.chasing-fireflies.com .

Oh, I have a love of planning children’s parties…we just had a Candyland party on the 21st for my little 4 year old. Full of lollipop toparies, candy trees, decorate your own cupcakes, make your candy necklaces and of course tons of candy….I was thinking of a Fairy Tea Party as well, before she declared it would be candyland…I wanted to share this with you…..http://www.magiccabin.com/product.asp?section_id=0&department=0&search_type=normal&search_value=fairy&cur_index=&pcode=2335,
Happy Planning!!!

Hi Kelle,
The party sounds awesome so far, can’t wait to see the progress. I have a Hobby Lobby right by my house and it is DANGEROUS! All the fun things they have…but I have to stay away from them after September as they put all their Christmas stuff out….too tempting. Anyway…LOVE your comment to Brett, brought me to tears (which is very easy to do here) and I thought…OMG, I would have told Mike (the hub) the same thing! GREAT analogy.
I do have a bone to pick with you though…the peeps! Ever since you mentioned them some time ago in a previous post I had to get 3 boxes (for my girls, you know) and open the plastic cover and let them get nice and hard on the outside and ate 80% of all 3 boxes myself…which does nothing for my “this is the year i get lean & sexy”. They are out of the house and since they apparently are my vice will no longer be welcomed here…no matter how cute they look staring at me with those chocolate dotted eyes at Target!
And the babies…oh my gorgeousness, I tell you Nella’s stare can stop the world and Lainey’s shy smile is killer! I would love to see that “evil eye” if you can capture it! That made me laugh..ha! Thanks for another awesome post…and good luck with the 1st chapter, I know it will be magic.
God bless my “friend”…<><

Love late night trips…an evening trip to Publix is my favorite! Happy party planning for a big girl party! Look forward to your creative ideas because I certainly lack in that department, but I’m great at “borrowing” other people’s ideas! We can’t wait for Saturday’s mini shoot. We’re going to bring Bridget along as well and maybe she’ll cooperate for a picture or two…but it’s really all about Ross this time! I promise, no chasing Bridget through ant piles:) Hope to see both of your beautiful girls!

you, your family, your story. beautiful. your blog was recently recommended to me and OH>MY>WORD. inspiring just doesn’t seem quite the word…is there a word that means more inspiring? the pinnacle of inspiring.
i know the reality that everyday in your life isn’t beautiful, but through all of it–your perspective is so filled with awe & wonder & beauty & grace. i am so excited to follow through this chapter of your life. i am so inspired to BE a better person/wife/mother because of your story.
The ripple effect of your story has no bounds. the way you write just captures my heart, like i am right there with you. i canNOT wait to read your book. praying for you as you write it…it is a story that needs to be told.
many blessings & love on you & your family. it’s weird to have a kinship with someone you’ve never met, but i feel that with you. i absolutely love that about the blog world.

Your post about how she just “fits” in your arm and settles in is wonderful. I’ve always said that’s one thing I love about my son (5yo w/ Ds). He stayed a baby so much longer and I LOVED that. Even now, at 5yo (almost 6!) his body still just fits with mine when he’s on my lap reading a book for falling a asleep.

Oh I just had a Pink party request last year for my 4 year olds party. I decided to do a neppolitan style party. We had pink brown and white everything. I filled jars with pink candy, made pink favors for girls and brown for the boys. Pink streamers and balloons a must! Tissue paper pom poms would have been good too. And since we got Zoe a doll house for her birthday I made a pink house cake. I also did a lot with pink cupcakes…here is my little post about a few of the days items…
http://myzoebug.blogspot.com/2009/08/pink-pink-pink.html
We also had pink cake pops via bakerella’s recipe. I think the birthday girl was pleased! This year it’s Fancy Nancy (for my little book obsessed child).
May I also add how much your blog has touched my heart! It has made me rethink my life, my family size, and so many wonderful things. Thank you for sharing your thoughts so honestly.

One of my favorite parties for my little gal was when she turned four and asked for a princess party. Of course…it was pink.
The girls came dressed as princesses. I read The Princess and the Frog and then we played pin the lips on the frog. I read The Princess and the Pea and then had the girls sit on piles of pillows to find the tennis ball.
The cake was the best though. I found it on the Family Fun website which has loads of great ideas for easy, fun cakes. I did the princess castle cake in pink and it was a hit.
Good luck!

The once-a-child in me would tell you that I really don’t recall how spotless or disheveled my childhood home was…but I do remember the smell of freshly baked cookies when I walked in the door, the lingering at the table after meals just because we weren’t done talking, the mess in the kitchen when I made the papier mache volcano complete with spewing lava for a fifth grade science fair. And the grandparent-I-am-today would tell you tidy homes are overrated. What I wouldn’t give for handprint smudges on the coffee table or crayon marks on the wall in a home now quiet in the wake of your growing up. So the shot of your play area would be incomplete without the residual remnants of your littles’ play. Feng shui, no way…it is the perfect placement of the abandoned sock that tells you there are bare toes nearby and the open book lying there tells you that the story is still untold and new chapters are just beyond this page. Our children provide a source of renewal and a connection with our own childhood. I will know I am old one day, when I leave Publix pushing my grocery cart and fail to run, jump up on the back of it and glide to my car. I am not there yet. And about parties…they begin with the perfect invitation. I know you will have one…we have already compared notes…and exchanged fairy dust. Loving you today.

Hi Kelle,
I have to say, your blog is the first one I’ve ever read and have gone back to for more and more. I wish I were gifted with words because many times I’ve wanted to write on here about my experience with the possibility of having a baby with DS but every time I deleted what I had written. Nella’s birth story was very inspiring and had me crying like crazy at the same time because I experience many of the same things you went through, except to me it all happened while I waited for the results of an amnio, which in the end came back “normal”.
I cried a lot, especially while sitting here at work, but I’ve cried even more with the story of Layla Grace, I don’t know if you’re familiar with her story and what her parents are going through. It has really put everything in perspective for me and I’m really trying to be a better mommy but above all, just LOVE LOVE LOVE my daughter no matter how mad she makes me or how crazy she drives me.
So please, please, please, do tell about the birthday plans and all the ideas you have. My daughter turned 2 in November, and although she had presents and cake, we didnt’ do a proper party. The weather here was very cold and having a small house doesn’t leave many options. So I would like to celebrate her 2 and a half birthday which will be in May, plus at the same time we can celebrate the arrival of her baby brother. But I would like to have a party and go all out because every birthday should be special.
Big kisses for Lainey and Nella!

Hi Kelle,
I have to tell you I am so inspired every single time I read a new post on your blog. As a first time Mom who is 5 months pregnant, I worry every single day about our little girl. I worry that she is growing well enough and will be strong enough when she enters this world. I was recently told that she is quite small for my dates and of course like any new Mom, what do I do? I cry, I worry, I dream horrible dreams…and I hope & pray. Reading your blog shows me that no matter what, we have a love for our child that will conquer anything. I’m so new at this. I’m new at all of the emotions i’m feeling, and the doubts, worries and fears that constantly pop into my head. But I know that we will be ok. Thanks for showing me that it’s ok to have doubts and feelings that are sometimes less than positive. I’m hoping our little girl will grow and become stronger because her Daddy and I will be ready and waiting for her on her birthday.

I too have a child with Down syndrome (one of my twins) and have additionally experienced a stillbirth (actually 2 years ago this very day I delivered my precious Scarlett Victoria) and can tell you that your heart will lead you! You will grow as a mother and as a person. Little Nella with all her bottled up sweetness and juicy pouty lip will impact more lives as a tiny newborn than most will do in a lifetime! Looks to me like your in Italy! 🙂

I am willing my 6 month old to hurry up and get older faster (although I’m aware that is a bad idea), so I can organise his first birthday party!
Gosh, Lainey is SO beautiful – I’m sure her birthday party will be more than she ever hoped for. And it will be well documented by the wonderful photos you take.
My most favourite picture of Nella is the very first one you have there of her by herself.. those beautiful eyes are just something else.

Thank you for being so inspiring and loving. My sister forwarded your blog to me and I enjoy your photography and outlook on life so much! I’m excited to hear Nella’s story. She is a special girl with such an amazing family. I can imagine the shock of finding out she had DS, but you should be so proud of yourself for dealing with all those feelings instead of stifling them. It’s the reason you’re such an inspiring mom – you’re real, honest, and so full of love. 🙂 And, you’re so right, just from the pictures I love little Nella.

Okay, so I never had a sleepover at a Library. But in fourth grade, my class DID have a sleepover at the Natural History Museum in our state’s capital and ohmygosh, it was AMAZING. There was something so magical and secret and hidden and impossible feeling. I can still remember the shadows and the stillness – and then the shouts of giggles and footsteps as we reveled in our very special treat.
I want to share that with my stepdaughters somehow… plan that for them. Maybe we’ll come along on your library adventure!
(Look at me inviting myself…)

Like everyone else… I found your blog when the birth story was posted on Peaceful Parenting. Also like the others, I cry every time I read it and I have read and reread it many times. Your words are so very beautiful expressing your pain as well as your joy. You have given me inspiration to finally start my own “online journal” blog as well as keeping out my own camera. We have a Canon 40D and it seems to spend more time in the bag that being used. I want to find the beauty thru the lens and enjoy the small things. I have found myself very melancholy in the last six months… partly due to turning 40 and partly to seeing my beautiful children growing up so very fast. My oldest just turned 7 in February and I feel like it is slipping thru my fingers. So thank you for your inspiration, your words and your beautiful pictures. You are an incredible woman of strength.
So I am now facing forward with camera in hand and learning to find beauty in the small, beautiful, mundane things of life
A new friend,

I turn to your blog like I turn to my coffee in the morning (a must, trust me). You are perhaps the most remarkable woman I have (never) met, and you make me want to be a more present Mama, and to appreciate the little things like Easter candy way before Easter, and precious baby knits. I am giddy about the thought of a book! Keep on keepin’ on, rocking it out, and loving those babies and sharing it with all of us. What a gift, Kelle.

my older brother with downs will turn 61 next year. My parents were 18yrs old when he was born and didn’t know he was downs till he was a year old. His name is chuck and he has been such a blessing to our family. I became a more compassionate person, because of him, my children became the compassionate people they are today because of him. Nella is so beautiful and such a blessing. God chose you for this journey and I will tell you that this journey will be the most beauitful journey you will take. Nella will always be the beautiful pure child she is. My brother to this day has an innocence about him that will never change. You are blessed and reading what you write, Nella is truly blessed that God chose you, your husband and little Lainey, to love her and watch her grow. I read your blog everyday and I have wondered if you would write a book, because, girl you write beautifully and your pictures are the most beautiful I have ever seen. God has given you so many gifts….share them

Hi Kelle,
Being a grown-up grandma with a big sister (2 yrs 8 mos my senior), I want to give you hope …. and also a warning.
My sister has always been there for me, coming to my defense whenever things weren’t going quite right. I believe she has loved me from the start. My mom told the story of my big sis coming out of the bedroom carrying me (all by herself) when I was 2 1/2 months old! My poor grandma saw this event and kept repeating, “my heart, my heart”. Perhaps that is one reason why I don’t ever remember meeting her.
So today I’m just sending a heads-up that a helpful, loving, caring, big sister just knows she can take care of her little sis. hehe You’ll all do great! =)
And again, as always, I appreciate your update.
Love, prayers and *hugs*

Landon and I think back to Grant’s birth-remembering the tears and such-and now laugh: we had no idea what happiness was coming!
We often say that if someone could have just shown us a picture of Grant at 2 or Grant learning to get around or just one of Grant’s adorable smiley face pictures – right after he was born, that we would have quickly dried our tears when we saw what a fun, cute boy we were going to have. To have gotten a glimpse at what was to come would have calmed the fears and made us happy in those moments, but I guess that’s not what life is about. We have to figure things out as we go and have faith that whatever God throws in our path will ulitmately be for our good – and for our JOY!

Beautiful. I love the pictures. I think post without pictures is just not complete. It brings me back to that little girl who looked at ONLY the pictures and made judgements based the covers books. Now as an adult (that sounds weird…adult) I greatly enjoy content – especially when it’s witty, romantic or heartwarming. But even with all that – the visuals still have a very big pull with me. Which is why I check for updates on your blog a few times a day! lol. Great content with pretty pictures to please my inner little girl.

Ok I totally have to comment on this “I’m proving to some cosmic force out there that I indeed can love this girl.”
My son’s endocrine clinic at his old hospital was also the nephrology clinic. I don’t know why, but there were almost always kids with DS there when we went. I always smiled a little longer at their mommies because, in this day and age, it IS saying something that you were able to overcome the fear. Nella couldn’t ask for a better mommy.
I can’t wait to see what your future holds. 🙂

Aww. I read your post when Nella was born. One of my Feb 2009 BBCers sent me a link. Love your work babe. You are doing a great job. I’m a SAHM, but pre-babies I was a special education teacher. I’ve worked with a lot of parents and a lot of kids and a lot of kids with down syndrome. Now being a parent I have an entirely new appreciation and perspective for parents, all parents, and especially parents with children with special needs. I’ve always believe with conviction that we are the best parents for our children. That parents understand their children like noone else can and that you were especially chosen for your children. Celebrate you and your children and your changing emotions and know that you will be an amazing mother to Nella. You already are!

Kelle, I read your blog everyday. If you haven’t posted a new one, I’ll re-read the older ones and take in all the pics as if I were there with. I’m so excited that you’ll start with you book, THE book. I seriously can’t wait! 🙂 Lainey and Nella are getting more beautiful everyday. I’ve been meaning to ask this for a while (totally randomness but bear with me): Do you and Brett ever fight? I honestly don’t see that happening at all…but it’s normal. Hmm I’m just curious. If you don’t, then what’s your secret? I want it.

My Ally, who is 1 week younger than your Lainey, totally pummelled Eric (our infant) during those first few months! Major LOL with your race to get the baby before her! Have a great night! I am so glad that I bookmarked this blog after reading Nella’s birth-story. You have such an amazing way with words and then you add these incredible photos to top it off and my eyes tear and my heart swells. I do so hope you’ll write a book. I will buy it and spread the word to everyone I know who could use a dose of the hope and joy and passion and love that you offer up so freely to us here.
I look at sweet Lainey and remember my Katie just a few short months ago at that age (she’s not quite 4 1/2). And oh how I adore little Nella in all her snuggly, scrumptious newborn sweetness. How I miss that time and the nursing bond and just the cuddling and all of it combined. Miss Katie is our baby, so that experience is left to me in only memories and how I wish I had such eloquent words as yours written somewhere that I might read it someday years hence and remember it with a sigh.
Hold tight to those beautiful babies of yours, and that hubby with the fabulous name (my hubby is a Brett as well). I shall keep coming back, looking for a dose of inspiration and beauty.

I love your photos and Nella is more beautiful each day if that is even possible. I look forward to your posts each day because your words are so true and so raw. Most days I would love to scream from the top of a mountain how I feel, but you writing is almost like therapy to me, as someone else posted, my Chicken Soup Book (or blog). Thank you for sharing it with everyone. I am sure you never imagined having this many followers and opening up your world to everyone. Your stories touch many and again I would just like to thank you for sharing. Also I must say I LOVE Lainey’s style. I used to have to have all of my little ones dressed so “cute” and my 20 month old twin has taught me about style! She would prefer her snow hat, sister’s shoes and don’t forget tons of bead necklases to what I would pick for the day. You are awesome!

Love your blog. I admire your honesty, your tenderness and your hopefulness.
I don’t know if you’ve mentioned that you’ve talked to anyone else with children who have Down’s, but I wanted to recommend a woman who might be a great source of wisdom and comfort to you when times get rough – Barbara Curtis. Her blog is here:
http://mommylife.net/
Her daughter Maddie made their family’s story nationally known when she went on American Idol. They have, I believe 4 children with Down’s syndrome — one biological child and 3 adopted. Maddie is in the middle. She could tell you what it is like for the siblings of children with Down’s.
Just a thought. All the best.

I love kid’s birthday parties! We live in Wisconsin and last fall for my son’s first birthday party we had a “Things that Move” Parade. He loves everything that moves (ATV’s, lawn mowers, bikes, etc.) So my husband set up a parade route in the backyard, we decorated the vehicles (we even had a moped) and then my family members drove them while throwing candy to the kids. It was so fun, even all the parents love it! Now I have a second son so the birthday parties this year need to somehow top that!

Oh Kelle! Where to start…as the mother of a brand-new little gal myself, I so relate to much of what you write (and I’m thinking of stealing the “help” bubble idea from your photo, if you don’t mind. Our little gal has been in a few tigh squeezes with her siblings as well.) As a budding photographer (not a professional, though) I love your work. And as a lover of life and all things beautiful, I get teared up every time I visit (which isn’t as much as I’d like due to the previously mentioned children.)
Keep it up!

I’m still waiting for the pics to load (stupid dial-up), but OMG Lainey looks JUST like you in that first picture (all except for the blonde hair).
I love that my 2-yr-old loves books, too, and a day isn’t complete without reading at least half of her collection. And I love sharing my childhood favorites with her, plus finding new ones.
HA – I’m all too familiar with that “help me” look. Gwendolyn (the 2yr old) likes to help burp Josiah by patting him hard on the tummy. And she drops her toys on his head. And tries to lay on top of him. You have to keep an eye on that one!
A fairy party – yay! I want to have one for my little girl on one of her birthdays! The March issue of Family Fun magazine has a spread on a fairy party, if you need ideas. They take a long piece of tuille and staple artificial flowers randomly around it. They send their “sprites” on a hunt for fairy treasure (inexpensive baubles which are later made into jewelry), make an enchanted garden as a craft (using acorn caps and leaves ‘n’ such), and take home “pixie stems” which they “pick” on their way out as a favor (pixie sticks tied to artficial flowers). Then there are yummy fairy berries (pink-chocolate covered strawberries), edible magic wands (cookies on a stick), and a fairy village cake. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Funny that you should write about planning Lainey’s party. I am in the midst of planning my little one’s first birthday and it’s really throwing me for a loop. I keep realizing how out of touch I am with what typical one year-olds are doing. I’ll plan something and then have to totally re-think it when I realize that other little one’s her age are way past that now.
It’s been a very stressful week and thanks so much for this beautiful blog that makes me look at the small, enjoyable, full of love things in my life even when I feel like things are falling apart. I needed this today. Thank you.

Your writing made me weep as I read the most recent post and then went back to your post about Nella’s birth. I was simply overwhelmed…by your words, by the love, by this tiny little life that has blessed that of you and your whole family. I am sure you have been directed to the story of another family in the book “Choosing Naia”. It too is a beautiful story in the making, as is yours. I look forward to finding time to start at the beginning of your blog and read forward and look forward to the party planning posts. Thank you for sharing your beautfiful life.

Kelle, I was told about your blog about a month ago and have been reading religiously. I think you are a remarkable person and have the most beautiful girls in the world. I had my first child last year and the love I feel for him is overwhelming, so I can only imagine how you feel with two babies to love.
I only wish I lived closer to you so I could get pictures taken of him by you. You’re a fantastic photographer!
Also, I wanted to do a little plug for a good friend of mine who is also expecting her first child in 8 weeks. She designs beautiful felt and button flower bouquets amongst other things. She recently started making headbands along with her hair pins. I think that she would come up with something adorable for Lainey’s “pink garden party”! You should look her up at http://www.princesslasertron.com. I get absolutely nothing from this. I just like to see creative,

Kelle, yrs ago I was taking a class on death and dying, I met a Neonatal nurse who was also taking the class, why because at the end I will tell you…This nurse worked in a Big Centre Hospital, a DS lil child was born to a 16 yr old single parent, who was planning to give her up for adoption, however the adoptive parents did not want her because she had DS of course… This lil girl required several heart surgeries, etc etc… Unfortunately this child was left in the unit with no one to care for her, and the centre was not to do any surgeries if in fact there would be none to care for her… Until this nurse who had only 2 sons decided to adopt this lil girl, and so then this child was then loved, and several surgeries followed to repair her lil heart…The nurse was taking the course on death and dying, working towards her degree, but mostly because with every surgery she feared loosing her lil bunny…I met this lil bundle of JOY, she was probably Laina’s age, but was very lil still and was only just starting to sit up, her smile filled the room with joy, she was the cutest lil girl… Meeting her , seeing her smile, seeing the love the nurse showed her, I understood then why this nurse had to take her home, and give her a family and lots of love, as none could resist loving this lil bundle of joy ….
BTW, if and when in the future when God forbid Nella’s Mom and Dad are no longer able to care for Nella… Nella will always have her BIG sister, as her sister will grow to love her most tenderly as you are showing her, even if at almost 3 she is a lil rough..lol. (most likely due to her developmental age struggles) Lainey will do nothing but love her lil sister later, and will be there for her always… I am sure of such, why because she is learning from a great Mom, and she too will be a great mom, and best-est Big sister ever!…*winks* …I assure you sweet Kelle…cause you have so much love to give them, you are blessed …

To my doctors,
In my chart you will read that when I was 28, I gave birth to my second son, who has Down syndrome. There is so much more that I wish was written in this small blank on my medical form! I would like the form to say that I declined first trimester prenatal testing, as I had done with my first son, believing that I would love any child that was placed in my arms at delivery for as long as I had with the child. I would like it to say that I had no idea that it was possible to identify several soft markers for Down syndrome during my regular 18 week ultrasound, that the word “abnormalities” was used, that the ultrasound machine was flipped off suddenly, that, once the screen was dark, I asked three times what the gender of my child was before I was told, that I was put in a room for an hour not knowing if my child was alive. I would like it to say that, as my husband and I waited in that room to find out what was “wrong” with our child, the only thing I could say was, “I just want Aidan to be okay,” to which my husband said with a smile, “Will his name be Aidan?” That this was the most important moment of our marriage, the most defining moment in my life.
I recently read the most beautiful story written by a thirty year old mother named Kelle who found out that her daughter had Down syndrome at birth. After the pediatrician examined the little one, she said to the mother, “I need to tell you something. The first thing that I am going to tell you is that your daughter is beautiful and perfect, but there are some features that lead me to believe that she has Down syndrome. But, Kelle, she is beautiful and perfect.” If I could go back and rewrite Aidan’s birth story, this is the way I would have penned it-feeling the warmth and breath of my new baby on my chest, receiving the diagnosis with words that inform, comfort, respect the dignity of a human life. I have witnessed the extent to which the medical community as an entity can humanize or dehumanize a child growing in his mother’s womb. During my second pregnancy, I quickly learned that introducing my belly to medical professionals as “Aidan” stifled reminders of the time I had left to terminate my pregnancy. But there were also the angels. In her book Expecting Adam, author Martha Beck (whose grown son Adam has Down syndrome) says, “Adam has angels like a dog has fleas. He brings them into the house, they’re everywhere, and you can’t get rid of them.” At 18 months, my Aidan might not be walking or talking, but he certainly “has angels like a dog has fleas.” I wish there was room in the blank on my medical form to tell of the angels I met in the medical community during my second pregnancy, and the angels I’ve met since.
During this pregnancy, I have been reminded of the first trimester prenatal testing that is available, and reminded that I have declined it. In my last prenatal visit, I was told that even if my second trimester ultrasound shows few or no soft markers, my baby may still not be perfect. That night, I rocked my sweet Aidan to sleep, and wondered what could be more perfect, more sacred, than a brand new life. Any brand new life. And I wondered who among us is perfect, and what guarantees we have of the health of anyone we love.
There is a short story often given to parents called “Welcome to Holland,” which compares finding out that a child has special needs to finding out midflight that the destination of a trip has been suddenly changed from much-anticipated Italy to the less-flashy Holland. The author concludes that though she did not initially want to go to Holland, she has found many things to love about it. While I appreciate the message of the story, I write to you now from “Italy,” where my family and I are living the life I dreamed of. We are absolutely infectious with joy about welcoming our newest little one to “Italy,” whoever he or she may be. And this is what I would like to be written in the blank on my medical form.

Oh, Lord! “The Senator!” That made me laugh so loud! And, that look on her face, like, “Mom? Seriously?…this is going on the blog, isn’t it?” &=D Poor babies, having to live through those first couple of years, as we give them shampoo hair-do’s and wear silly outfits! You’d better hope she and Lainey have a little more compassion when they’re choosing your nursing home!! &=D
