Unextreme Makeover: Lainey’s Room

August 15, 2011 By Kelle

On cooking shows, when, say, Martha Stewart whips up some eggs, scrapes in some butter, dollops perfect spoonfuls of creamy batter into muffin tins, it happens gracefully. Dishes magically disappear when she’s done with them, and of course she sprays her counters clean in between each step. Because that’s the way it’s supposed to be done. And cupcakes with lemon curd frosting taste so much better when you’re enjoying them in a clean kitchen, right?

The way I cook? Complete opposite. Egg shells cracked and thrown on the island, melted butter slopped on dish rags, batter carelessly dripping onto cookbook pages and never wiped off. It’s a measure of excellence: the more crusted crap on a cookbook page, the better the recipe.

Throw in a home improvement project with the cooking? Hay-ell no.

So it was last night, as I was making lasagna and tying up the last bits of my weekend home project, the kitchen took a beating. It had already served as the holding tank for all tools and homeless knick-knacks that I cleared out of Lainey’s room while I worked. And cleaning it up before I made lasagna wouldn’t have been any fun. So I spread noodles into my pan while I elbowed the cordless drill. I knocked over an Allen wrench, two screwdrivers and a USB cord while I stirred my sauce. And yes, it would have been so much easier if I did it the Martha Stewart way. But Girlfriend ain’t Martha.

Photobucket

Thank you Dad for giving up your weekend to make a couple girls very happy.

I like to mess up three rooms just to clean one. I rob Peter to pay Paul, dumping piles from Lainey’s room to the kitchen, from the kitchen to Nella’s room, from Nella’s room to the entry way, until the entry way serves as the audition tape for Hoarders. But what happens in the end is that I’m so excited about what I accomplished–about all the rooms that look new and refreshed, homey and inviting–that I’m inspired to clean that last room, those remaining piles–and clean it I did. I love new projects.

Photobucket

I needed a change, that is all. I wanted a new inexpensive home project and felt it was time Lainey had a space that was all hers. Most everything from this room is stuff we already had around the house. What we added was extremely inexpensive (Mason jars, marbles, dominoes, cardboard letters, paint, etc.).

When I was pregnant with Lainey, I poured all of myself into her room. When it was finished, I’d spend my evenings sitting on a chair in her room taking it all in. Sometimes I’d cry because I couldn’t believe the crib I ran my fingers along would hold a baby–my baby. Brett would wake up every morning to find me sitting in there–lights dimmed, feet propped, coffee in hand. “What are you doing in here again?” he’d laugh. And “Just dreaming” was how I’d reply. There’s something special about the space you create for your kids. This one was especially meaningful because now that I know her–what she likes, how she thinks, what turns the corners of her mouth into her infamous shy smile–it was so much fun to create ideas that would capture who she is. My creative, curious, colorful girl.

Her new space:

Lainey’s old Pottery Barn Kids kitchen–used to be pink. I repainted it red and put a coat of chalkboard paint on the refrigerator. My friend Rebecca made new curtains for the pie cabinet.

My one hold-up in this room was the chandelier. I hated it. This room used to be a dining room a long time ago and, to me, the light screamed dinner table. I wanted it gone. When my dad suggested we keep it, I fought him hard. He suggested painting it funky; I thought I’d hate it.

I humbly admitted once we were through that he was right. I freaking love this lamp.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Plain ‘ol toss pillow jazzed with some felt we cut, glued and stitched.

Photobucket

Toys adhered to wall with Velcro.

Photobucket

Discontinued Ikea curtains: $15 for both panels; shelf: $4 piece of wood painted and screwed into window opening.

Photobucket

Prints above dresser are 8×8 photos mounted on Styrene. I like canvas, but it’s expensive and I can’t justify it because I like to switch out photos and wall art when I get bored. These were $7 each from WHCC. You can also get them mounted on mat board with varied thickness.

Photobucket

Since we’ve finished this room, Brett has again found me sitting–lights dimmed, feet propped up, coffee in hand. “Just dreaming,” I say. Because it makes me happy.

It makes her happy too.

More from the weekend:

I scoured paint stains off my forearms and enjoyed my babies.

Devyn Bag: best multitasking bag ever. Laptop, purse, insulator.

I love their secret language. I love the way Little Sister adores Big Sister.

We spent a lot of time with Poppa this weekend. I opened the door to Nella’s room last night to see little globes of light skipping across the ceiling. The room was dark, and Lainey and Poppa twirled flashlights like batons. “Sssshh. You can’t come in,” whispered Lainey. “We’re on a camping trip.” They stretched out on their backs and hid under blankets so the mountain lions wouldn’t find them. And I closed the door smiling, thankful for grandparents and flashlights and memories of imaginary campfires.

Poor Nella got kicked out of the room because she didn’t like it dark and cried every time the flashlight clicked off. “No Babies Allowed,” as Lainey says.

I enjoyed your insightful comments from the Lake post. It reminded me of one of my favorite children’s books, All the Places to Love (actually someone else pointed that out). If you haven’t read it to your kids, it’s worth buying your own copy just so you can inscribe the front with a letter to your littles and a running list of all the favorite places you enjoy together.

Photobucket

I used my 16-35 mm (2.8) lens on most of the photos in that post, and it’s tied with my 50 mm for favorite lens. The wider angle allows for a more interesting and detailed background and fun possibilities for focus and subject placement within a shot.

We have more projects this week–some we didn’t ask for. Like when Lainey went out on the lanai to paint, I thought she was using her easel but instead, she went bananas on her table and chairs.

Photobucket

We have no choice but to turn it into the coolest paint-slopped art table you’ve ever seen.

I’ll be back tomorrow for a special Hallmark post!

Have a great night! There is a colorful room calling my name.

Learning to Stand

July 25, 2011 By Kelle

She’s fully capable of standing alone, I just know it. Her legs are sturdy, her balance is unwavering and yet there’s that itty bitty finger grip. She’s not quite ready to let go, and that’s okay.

Photobucket

You know how many times in life I knew I possessed every ounce of strength and skill to do something and yet I chose to wait, clutching on to the guidance of others for whatever reason, until my confidence grew so strong, it pushed me like a rip current?

While I hold that tiny hand, providing the steadiness she thinks I give her, I know her confidence is brewing like a long-awaited cup of coffee. It will come and, in the meantime, I smile knowing that something as little as my finger–a tiny part of me–is all she needs to feel secure.

*****

It was a homey weekend. We ventured out only to take the crew to the airport and gather ingredients for broccoli soup.

Photobucket

We crafted. We’re working on switching some rooms just for fun in our house and, in the process, Lainey will get her own. Poking around Ohdeedoh for inspiration, I found a room I fell in love with but knew I had seen it somewhere before. And then I smiled, recognizing it as my blog friend, Meg’s. Meg is crafty, kind, homey and adorable. Her house tour will leave you completely inspired, and we love this room so much, we are incorporating a little “READ” in Lainey’s room too, next to a hanging book shelf above her bed. The room is a work in progress, but we did accomplish finishing our letters this week. I love the work of Eloise Wilkin, and we happened to have two copies of the same book, so we (gasp) tore one up to decoupage onto cardboard letters. Someone needs to pry this damn Mod Podge out of my hands before I start shallacking walls.

Photobucket

More to come on her room.

*****

We dwell outside a lot these days. Nella cries at the door to go out, cries once we’re out to get down, and cries when we finally come in for the night. She is happiest when she is hot, dirty, and scraping her butt along pavement.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Sister likes it too. This is her badass cyclist look.

Photobucket

Last week, a neighborhood cat ventured down to our driveway and decided he’s in love my kids. Now, we find him sleeping in strollers in our garage and hear him crying outside our door first thing in the morning. Lainey thinks it’s the coolest thing that ever happened to us.

Photobucket

And Nella and Cat are making friends, slowly but surely. There have been stand-offs.

Photobucket

But Lainey usually intervenes and does some good mediator work and now Cat, Kid and Sister are getting along swimmingly.

Do you see a cat?

Photobucket

Cat camoflauges himself in our mulch, just like Latte does.

*****

This morning, Lainey and I set out on a much-needed date.

Photobucket

We drove farther than usual to a hidden Cracker Barrel nestled away from the main stretch, between a Super 8 motel and a storage garage off of CR-951. It made me think of this trip, where Cracker Barrel breakfasts were as common as stopping for gas. I love Cracker Barrel. I like the way their store front smells like licorice and cinnamon and wood floor polish. I like the Smoky Mountain Hymn CDs they sell and their pickle barrels full of Raggedy Anns and sock monkeys.

We played checkers. I let her win.
We ate pancakes. I let her pour her own syrup.
We talked about words, and when she asked “What does p-y-u-b-w-z?” spell (because we’re in that stage), I let her think “pyubwz” was a real word and she was awesome for spelling it.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

And right when I felt like the Cracker Barrel off the beaten path was far from home, we bumped into good friends–right there in the general store next to harmonicas and penny candy.

Lainey’s friend, Aleena.

The girls were thrilled to see each other, evident by their strange dance moves and endless giggling. They have a secret hand shake, these two. We noticed it a couple times after they received stickers at the end of ballet class. They tap fists in some wonder-twin-powers-activate move and then follow it by wiggling their fingers under their chin and mumbling some Mork-ish babble. It’s inventive and hilarious.

Photobucket
Photobucket

There’s still more daylight that calls for driveway butt scoots tonight. Nella’s, not mine.

When Brett saw the box from our returning sponsor on our counter this week, he got all excited. “That homemade lotion stuff is back?” he asked. He loved this stuff, and he wasn’t the only one.

Heal My Sole is returning as a sponsor this month. Heal My Sole, a company that began with an idea and some homemade recipes in a kitchen, offers all natural body products. We tried the massage candle (smells amazing), the citrus scrub, and the all natural bug spray which we loved. It’s perfect for kids and works great for beach no-see-ums and post-rain mosquitos.

Last week seemed to last forever, but this week I am pushed forward by the current of everything good. My legs are sturdy, my balance unwavering.

We are looking forward to some fun adventures on our calendar this week.

Cat is crying at our doorstep. Must go.

Happy Monday to all…and to all a good night.

Overcast

July 7, 2011 By Kelle

For three days now it has rained. Somewhere out in the gulf, Tropical Moisture has unpacked his bags and decided to stay a while, and his staycation has consequently colored our skies to a constant state of dreary gray. The sky looks like an ashtray, even though the glass-is-half-full voice that dwells within is begging me to retract that statement or at least change my description to mysterious silver. Pensive sky is, I believe, how I’ve referred to it in the past, but the monotony of this weather pattern is wearing on me and affecting my mood.

Photobucket

I went down to the beach today, just a quick trip to inhale the best of the stormy landscape, the brightest and most open of skies, even though the sea sky was still heavy and gray. The mangroves were thick with mosquitos, and the sand was dense and wet. But the view from under my umbrella was still beautiful. Quiet.

Photobucket
Photobucket

Just as I was arriving, an older woman was crouched over on the boardwalk, wringing out her socks. Her hair was still dripping, and her clothes stuck to her skin like wet paper.

“That’s not from the rain is it?” I asked, startling her on a vacant beach.

“Oh no,” she smiled. “I got down here, saw that quiet water, and it looked so inviting. I jumped in, clothes and all, and floated on my back in the rain. It was amazing.”

I smiled. I’d like to be her someday.

Photobucket
Photobucket

I haven’t taken very many pictures the past few days as good light is absent, and that vibrant inspiration that’s easily ignited by the sun seems to be a little lacking these days. It felt good to force myself to take a few shots on the beach though, to find my inspiration even under stormy skies.

Nella has taken up climbing. This chair is, as Goldilocks would say, “just right” for Little Bear, and she’s memorized every step to get up in it, turn around, sit, and slide back down to start over.

RAINY DAY D.I.Y. Photo Display Project

Obviously, we have a slew of photos to choose from for display in our home. But displaying them the same way can get boring. Framed 8 x 10s? Fuhget about it. I am always looking for (inexpensive) new and interesting ways to display our pictures to tell the story of our family. This one happens to qualify for debeigifying as well (a long project I’m working on, room by room. Color and Character!)

1. Begin with 12 x 12 frames. I purchased these at Michael’s–buy one, get one free. I spray painted them red to add some ooomph for our walls.

Photobucket

2. I discarded the glass as I was going for a 3-dimentional look and wouldn’t need it. I traced the back of the frame onto a piece of fabric, cut the square out, and adhered it to the frame backing with spray adhesive.

Photobucket

3. I hot glued 1/2 inch wood blocks (Michaels) onto the middle of the fabric backing for mounting.

Photobucket

4. Next, I used 5×5 photos I had printed on Styrene (I used WHCC Labs) and hot glued them onto the block mounts.

Photobucket

Photobucket

5. Secure back in frames. And Voila. New photo wall, highlighted nicely by crappy overcast lighting.

Photobucket

Photobucket

And that little project right there was almost as good as sunshine.

Welcome to our new sponsor, Amber Silva’s Stella & Dot store. I just went peeking around and fell in love with about twenty different pieces. Her shop features both casual and night-out-on-the-town jewelry pieces as well as children’s jewelry. And I can’t tell you how many times I’ve complimented someone on their jewelry only to hear them reply back “Stella & Dot.”
